EDITOR’S VIEW
W
hat an amazing summer of sport we have just enjoyed. England winning the cricket World Cup in the most dramatic of finals, England (again) fighting to the bitter end to draw a brilliant Ashes series with Australia, and just a couple of weeks ago, the fastest, biggest sell-out, most raucous finals day at Edgbaston in the 17-year history of the terrific T20 Blast. And there’s more to come, as this month sees the Rugby World Cup get into full swing with England and Wales leading the Home Nations pack to lift the famous Webb Ellis cup. What better way to stoke the World Cup fire than getting the lowdown on the hopes, heroes and highlights of playing rugby at the ultimate level from Neil Back, one England’s winning heroes from the legendary 2003 side. Rugby fans will have seen over and over on TV and on YouTube the iconic moment when Jonny Wilkinson drop-kicked England to victory. That victory was a memorable, massive effort by what Neil describes as a ‘team of captains’. And that’s what it will take again, he tells us, if England’s class of 2019 is to emulate the achievement. Neil believes the current red rose team is the most complete side since his 2003 heroes, and, yes, they certainly have what it takes to win. Let’s hope he’s right, because there is no doubt that high-profile sporting success creates the heroes that kids aspire to become. Neil spends some of his time visiting local schools in the Midlands, giving talks and coaching. He says that junior rugby in the region is in a generally healthy state but that English success in the World Cup would inspire even more kids to want to try the sport. And, who knows, there might just be another Neil Back out there waiting to be ‘discovered’.

THE NATION EXPECTS, AND SO DOES LOCAL WORLD CUP-WINNING RUGBY LEGEND NEIL BACK WHO TALKS HEROES, HOPES AND LEGACY TO DAVID JOHNS AS
ENGLAND’S CLASS OF 2019 LOOKS TO EMULATE HIS CHAMPIONS OF 2003
ugby fans will be glued to their TVs as the World Cup gets into full swing this month – and England supporters will be hoping that the men wearing the red rose can match the heroics of the famous 2003 winning team. Among those cheering loudest will be England and Midlands legend Neil Back who was a key member of the side that claimed the sport’s biggest prize. Neil spoke exclusively to Birmingham Living just before the 2019 tournament kicked off in Japan – the first time the World Cup has been held in Asia. And just like the player we all know and love, he was direct and to the point with opinions and predictions. “For the first time since 2003, England look like they have what it takes to go all the way,” he said. “Every World Cup brings back memories of that great time I had with the team when we won the trophy in Australia, but this time it really feels like this group of England boys can match what we achieved. And the tournament is unique this year because of the venue – the first time the World Cup has been to Asia.”
R
LEADERSHIP Neil says that as a player in such a high-pressure competition all you want is for the fans, the media and the nation as a whole to get behind you and support you. He explained: “The England coach Eddie Jones is the only
14 birmingham living
person who selects the team – no one else, not the so-called experts or the media. So we should always support who he picks and respect his judgement. If we all come together, everyone is confident and moving in the right direction.” As well as unity, leadership is also a must-have if England are to succeed in Japan, says Neil. “I’m not just talking about the coach and the captain. You need many leaders in the team, not just one or two. In 2003, Martin Johnson was the captain but if you look at the players, there were multiple captains and leaders. BLOND HERO “Today’s England have a front five who can all handle the ball, the team has a blend of power and subtlety in general play and the kicking game – but leadership is crucial when the going gets tough. And there will be ups and downs and big tests during the course of a tournament when so many games are played so close together. In an intensive competition like the World Cup you really need two squads that are capable of winning because you have to make changes along the way.” Home interest in the World Cup is not all about England. “Wales are ranked number one in the world and they are a huge danger to England,” said Neil, who also placed New Zealand and South Africa among the favourites to hoist the famous Webb Ellis trophy.

COVER STORY
Born in Coventry, before moving to Solihull and now living in Leicester, Neil remembers being inspired to take up rugby as a kid after watching the exploits of top players. His hero was Jean Pierre Rives, the French powerhouse forward who earned legendary status as ‘the blood-stained’ hero of Les Bleus. “With his mop of blond hair always streaked in blood, I felt like I was just like him – I had a lot of blond hair back then I promise you – and he had a similar build to me, being a bit short! I was always prepared to put my head in where it could get hurt, so I always had blood streaming down my face.” Neil chose rugby over cricket which he also played to a high level as a youngster and even though his whole adult life has revolved around rugby, he still has a passion for ‘the gentleman’s game’. He said: “I went to the Ashes test in Birmingham and even though the result ended up not being what we wanted, the city was buzzing because of the cricket. And what about England winning the cricket World Cup, that was just awesome.” INSPIRING English success, whether in cricket, rugby or football, are what inspires the next generation, and Neil has seen this happening first-hand. After 25 years in the game as a player and then coach, he now devotes some of his time to visiting and coaching in schools. “Unlike in my days growing up, the tech age is providing so many other things kids can do – they can play sport now on a computer screen if they want to. But despite all this, there are some great junior rugby clubs in the Midlands and
october 2019
success by England at the World Cup can only encourage and build on this.” Neil is a regular speaker at hospitality and other sporting events and his lifestyle these days means he can now devote more time to his family. “I know every husband says it, but my wife is truly amazing. We’ve been married 21 years this year and she has had to sacrifice so much to my rugby career. Six years ago I decided it was time to really prioritise my family and kids.” OPPORTUNITIES With a daughter in her second year at university and a son who has just started at Nottingham Forest’s football academy, Neil says he tries to make sure they have every opportunity to achieve their goals and create their own paths in life. “My heroes are my mum and dad who gave me all the love and support and opportunity possible,” he said. “I want the same for my kids.” Neil’s personal motto is “never fail through lack of effort” which we think is the perfect mantra that England’s players should adopt to bring home the ultimate prize at this month’s World Cup.
BACK2FITNESS Back2Fitness is Neil’s three-phase, 12-week programme created for men and women whose fitness has dropped off due to other commitments such as work, family or injury. Details at http://www.back2fitness.co

THE JOKER
AHEAD OF HIS GIG AT BIRMINGHAM COMEDY FESTIVAL, FUNNY MAN ROB KEMP CHATS ELVIS, EXAM INVIGILATION AND ELECTRO ROCK WITH SHELLEY CARTER he intensity of two shows a day at Edinburgh Festival may have been taking its toll when we chatted to Rob Kemp, but despite a cold (absolutely not man flu because it’s 2019 and we’re not going there) he was as chipper as ever. Edinburgh 2017 is the place Rob credits with his ‘big hurricane’ where comedy horror musical, the Elvis Dead – a retelling of cult horror movie Evil Dead II in the style of Elvis Presley – was one of the hits of the festival. Rave reviews, a best newcomer nomination and a bucket load of opportunities followed.
T
MOONRAKER 2 The following year, not so great. Wheel of Shows in 2018 didn’t connect with audiences in the same way and Rob says he felt ‘the pressure and fear of failure’. He explains: “I didn’t know what people expected. I wasn’t happy writing it or doing it.” This year, he wilfully wrote a show that was ‘silly and just had a lot of fun’. Cue Moonraker 2 which focuses on that ‘thin veil between sleep and awake, where your mind wanders unimpeded’. It’s a collection of those thoughts including some stuff on Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte and a song full of penis synonyms about the Icelandic Phallological Society. Standard. At the time of writing, we’re not sure if we’ll see this or an entirely different show at Birmingham Comedy Festival, but there’ll be belly laughs for sure. Rob tries to avoid reviews. He says: “You get good reviews and then just one off-colour one can throw your whole day out. Then there’s a temptation to change the show. No, I don’t bother.” NOODLING AWAY Rob’s route into comedy came via Birmingham’s electro rock scene and exam invigilation quite randomly. The camaraderie of being in a band ‘jumping the van’ was enjoyable. Rob recalls: “Everyone’s noodling away in a practice room. It was a lot of fun, but they weren’t my gang. It wasn’t my home.” When the drummer took time out for ‘nefarious reasons’ and Rob started to struggle financially he began invigilating exams. “It’s an important job, but it’s not thrilling. While I was there, the exam officer suffered a mental breakdown which was lucky for me. I stepped into the role. She’s alright now.”

Despite always being a fan of jokes, Rob says he really wasn’t the funny kid at school. “I had a severe side parting, thick glasses and looked like a bank manager, yet friends say now, ‘I always knew you were funny’ and aren’t surprised by my career choice.” The decision to go into stand-up came when Rob thought up a joke he’d never heard before and turned it into an eight-page Word document. OPEN MIC NIGHT He recalls: “I thought ‘why am I doing this?’ so I went along to an open mic night. I just didn’t want to be an old man with regrets.” Rob says there’s an element of ego and kudos associated with the standup scene and that it’s easy to forget it’s all just silliness really. “When you die on your arse it doesn’t feel like that, but really the worse thing that can happen is they might forget who you are or never come again. I obviously want approval. Hug your kids or they’ll end up like me!” He adds: “Mum, don’t worry, you hugged me enough.”

Speaking of family, the performing gene perhaps came from Rob’s dad who was into amateur dramatics. “He’s a grand presence at 6ft 3in with a deep booming voice and always smiling, so there was no surprise I ended up performing. My mum’s a bit quieter, more contemplative.” GUESSING GAME Rob’s fond of Birmingham and recalls many a night at Foundry and Excel. “I’m proud of it and I love how it’s changed. The comedy scene’s not as big as in other cities, but it’s a really nice place to be.” He’s excited to be heading back for Birmingham Comedy Festival this month even if he’s keeping us guessing with the content. “The blurb I’ve written is vague. Am I going to be doing Moonraker or have I got time to do something else? I’ll do my best.” I

CHEF’S CORNER
Tell us about your cooking As a pastry chef, I would describe my style as fairly classical, as most pastry chefs would I’d imagine. I draw a lot of influence from previous places I’ve worked at, such as the Café Royal in London and Michelin-starred Adam’s here in Birmingham. I’m fascinated by the science behind working with pastry. There are so many variations and techniques to play around with and when you combine this with the huge amounts of ingredients at our disposal, the possibilities are almost endless. How did you become a chef? I never intended to be a chef in all honesty. I have a degree in biochemistry and a Masters in bioinformatics so I pretty much always thought I’d continue working in the world of science, perhaps as a researcher. But I took a year out and simply started cooking and fell in love with it. I saw an ad for Cordon Bleu and wanted to give it a go so I saved and saved and put all my money into doing Cordon Bleu – and here I am! What do you eat when at home? In truth, I don’t cook much at my own house. However, if I want to eat I normally go round to my parents’ house for some Hong Kong traditional cooking. My dad was a chef for a number of years and he still loves cooking and has retained his competitive edge, so he’s always keen to show off his cooking.
Who’s the best chef in the world and why? Every chef has their own chef who they look up to and admire. For me, French chef Joel Robuchon has to be up there with the best. To have the impact he did across the world and to achieve so many Michelin stars in so many places is incredible. I recently read Gordon Ramsay’s autobiography and was inspired by his incredible story and also David Chang over in the States. He was probably the guy who made me want to be a chef and his story is similar to mine in that he fell into a career in kitchens late on through his love of food. By coincidence, he even worked at a restaurant called Craft early on in his career! Is the customer always right? No… I’ll leave it at that!

COOK WITH HOWING LAI Visit www.brumliving.co.uk for his mouth-watering Chocolate Choux recipe.
Share a cooking tip Always follow the recipe, especially when cooking pastry, and don’t try and put your own spin on it. What was your favourite food as a kid? Pizza – and it still is! Food heaven and food hell? Heaven is anything that’s bad for you and really indulgent, or that you shouldn’t really eat lots of. Like a proper croissant, made with ludicrous amounts of butter! Hell is celery. I can’t stand the stuff. What’s the most unusual thing you’ve eaten? I would say beef tripe, the lining of a cow’s stomach and I actually enjoyed the taste and texture of it. If you weren’t a chef, what would you be? A biochemistry researcher. What do you recommend from this evening’s menu? BFC Chicken (Birmingham Fried Chicken) and for dessert the souffle. SEASON’S EATINGS
HOT FOR HALLOWEEN K so call us predictable but, really, can season’s eatings for October be anything but pumpkin? In our defence, this recipe for pumpkin soup is simple to make and delicious – with the added bonus that all those gorgeous pumpkins aren’t completely wasted on scary faces. And… there’s loads of ways to pimp up the soup to make it more spooky (like drizzling with cream for a cobweb effect). Wooooo…..
O
SPOOKY PUMPKIN SOUP Ingredients
2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 finely chopped onions
1kg pumpkin peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks 700ml vegetable or chicken stock 150ml double cream
METHOD: Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently cook the finely chopped onions for five minutes, until soft but not coloured. Add the pumpkin to the pan and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden. Pour the stock into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for a further 10 minutes until the squash is very soft. Pour 150ml of double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. Serve with croutons and a handful of toasted seeds.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
FAZENDA
55 Colmore Row, Birmingham, B3 2AA. Tel: 0121 728 5656 fazenda.co.uk f you’re of vegetarian, vegan or pescatarian persuasion, Colmore Row’s Brazilian Rodizio, Fazenda famed for its lip-smackingly good meat, might not be top of your date night wish list. We thought we’d give it a whirl anyway – one carnivore, one pescatarian – to see how it fared. Firstly, the salad bar – clear your mind of any negative connotations those two words might conjure up because we guarantee it’s nothing like that – was heaving with an inspiring collection of carefully curated dishes. Highlights were minted tabbouleh, Lancashire cheese with Brazilian spicing, fiery miniature red peppers, stunning cured meat, too many inventive salads to mention, punchy anchovies, we could go on. We treated the salad bar like a starter, but realised that actually for the carnivore it should have been more of an accompaniment to the main event, indeed on the website it states, ‘sides bar’. It didn’t matter for us, but if you’re planning a trip it’s worth bearing in mind. The waiters brought out a staggered procession of skewered meat carved at the table including fillet mignon, minted lamb chump, chicken hearts and the highlight, honey and cinnamon pork collar which came highly recommended and lived up to the hype brilliantly plus lots more. Diners control the pace at which the meat is served with a simple red and green card system. Green card means ‘yes please’, red means ‘I’m having a rest’. Simple, but effective. It’s a great way to try lots of different cuts that you might not necessarily order. There were too many for us to try comfortably, but what we sampled was all beautifully cooked. Red meat is served medium-medium

rare as standard. If you want it differently, a nod to the staff would do the trick. For the non-meat eater there was a corker of an a la carte menu including two vegan dishes which never felt like an afterthought. It was tricky to get the timing right to coincide the carnivore’s feast, but it worked. A 15-minute turn around for the kitchen was about right. For the purposes of the review we sampled two of the a la carte dishes, but one would definitely be enough. A deliciously earthy black truffle and wild mushroom risotto impressed hugely. Very generous on the truffle and autumn vibes a plenty. Then a typical Brazilian moqueca. Essentially, it was a vegetable stew with coconut, but it was so rich and packed with flavour that it was elevated way beyond a humble peasant dish. The accompaniments were knock-out including more of the fiery mini peppers we’d enjoyed earlier, fried plantain, rice and a sort of grain/crumb that added texture and warmth to the dish. It was utterly delicious. Both were vegan. There’s nothing not to like here in our book. The atmosphere was lively and relaxed, the food was ace and the service was pretty much perfect. A win whatever your culinary leanings. I

ost of us know something about French, Italian and Spanish wine and the large New World producers, like Australia, New Zealand, California and so on. But what about the smaller, less well-known wine regions in the world. Given my mantra is to explore and taste as many new wines as you can, we should remember there is a huge number of wines that come from places that are often overlooked – I like to call them my ‘unsung heroes’.
M
Where to start? Well, a quick mention to Germany. Overlooked now in many ways, but really it shouldn’t be. Stick with white (if buying in the UK) and I would recommend you start with Riesling. If you see Kabinett (off dry) or Charta (dry) on the label, this should lead you to a decent white wine to try. Or visit Waitrose, if you can, and buy one of their German wines – any costing £7.99 or more should be fine.

ROB’S
UNSUNG STARS
Royal Tokaji Blue Label 5 Puttonyos Aszu – Puttonyos indicates the level of sweetness (with 6 being the highest). This is an amazingly complex Hungarian wine and an excellent introduction to the wonderful world of Tokaji Aszu. So sweet and fresh. My desert island wine, it’s £13.29 for a 25cl bottle in Waitrose. Chateau Musar – Any will do, but the Wine Society has the 2012 vintage available for only £24. A brilliant Lebanese wine, again with so much complexity. Smoky, spicy with intense flavours. Enjoy now or keep and it will get even better with age. Chateau Changyu Moser XV – A Bordeaux style wine from
EASTERN DELIGHTS Next, moving further east, we turn to Hungary. Its best-known wine – and arguably the best wine in the world – is Tokaji Aszu, a luxurious sweet nectar that is so complex Einstein would have difficultly working it out! My other favourite Hungarian wines are made with the Cabernet Franc grape. Villany a wine region in southern Hungary produces very good examples. Try anything from the Bock estate. Let’s continue our eastward journey and arrive in Lebanon. Here the Hochar family has been making wine in the Bekaa Valley for 90 years. Their Chateau Musar wine is aged seven years before release and is a joy to behold. Seek it out and you’ll be rewarded. Next stop on our travels, and one you may think unlikely, is China. This huge country has some interesting wines now appearing in the UK that are well worth a look. Berry Brothers, Slurp and even Sainsbury’s have Chinese wine on offer – and the ones I’ve tasted stand up against anything mainstream. WESTERN WONDERS No turning back as over the Pacific we go, landing in the US and Washington State. Here we can try some wonderful wines made with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Two hundred miles inland, protected by the Cascade mountains, grapes are grown in near-dessert-like conditions and with high altitude vineyards they have a lightness and freshness to set them apart. As we must continue our global circumnavigation we arrive back in Britain, where we should obviously wash down our globe-trotting with a decent glass of English fizz. Unsung and definitely a hero. Cheers…I

winter coat might be the most important and one of the most costly purchases of the season, so let’s give it some serious consideration and get it right. Our mantra when coat shopping is warmth, practicality and style, so with that in mind let’s keep it simple and no matter what your budget, ensure your investment works hard for you. If you’ve shopped smart in previous years you’ll probably have a handful of decent coats that you can turn to year on year. Great. Go through your current collection and cull what you don’t need/want anymore. Donate to charity shops or your local homeless shelter. We always start with a camel coloured coat as a base that will work with every outfit. Ordinarily we’d go for wool, but we’ve been swayed by the Maxmara teddy coat (pictured) which will go with practically everything you own. If you’re on a more modest budget, take a look at Matalan and Primark which have some excellent examples.

Speaking of the teddy coat, there’s a rainbow of options available from fuchsia pink to powder blue. The dusky blue version pictured from M&S is one of our highlights thanks to its chunky buttons, high collar and deep pockets. A winner. Faux fur, as with every autumn, is plentiful with oodles of patterned versions around. Bold Rupert the Bear checks and animal prints are top of the wish list. Puffer jackets can be tricky to pull off, however Moncler’s Seritte padded jacket has just the right amount of puff, a chic high neck and a hood and is very wearable (pictured). We’re really feeling the shearling this year with a cracking example from M&S (pictured) plus a fantastic creamy version from Next (also pictured). Happy shopping!

BEAUTY UPDATE STYLE

Open fires, winter woollies, Strictly on the box… it’s that wonderfully cosy
time of year when your beauty regime and general self-care might need a kick start. We’ve picked out a handful of hero products that’ll see you through 1. PHILIP KINGSLEY DAILY DAMAGE DEFENCE LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER – £18, PHILIPKINGSLEY.CO.UK A spritz of this before styling beats the war against frizz and protects hair. It doesn’t have the tacky feel of some leave-in products, just silky. We use it in addition to our usual conditioner, so we’re getting a double hit of nourishment.

2. DRUNK ELEPHANT D-BRONZI ANTI-POLLUTION SUNSHIN DROPS – £30 (30ML), SPACE NK The hype surrounding Drunk Elephant rages on, but we reckon it’s fully justified and probably write about it in these pages more than we ought to for people who aren’t on the payroll. Anyway, if like us you’re feeling a bit pasty, just mix one drop into your daily moisturiser and it will give you a subtle sunkissed glow. It’s packed with natural goodies too that will do your skin a lot of favours. 3. SPACE MASKS LIMITED EDITION ROSE – £15 (BOX OF 3), SPACEMASKS.COM If you haven’t tried a Space Mask you’re in for a treat. Tagline ‘Interstellar Relaxation’ is a bit OTT, but they are incredible. The eye masks come in a foil pouch and once removed they begin to heat up and release a gentle fragrance – in this case rose, the original Space Masks are jasmine. They’re apparently great for migraines but we use them just because. A donation of £1 from each

box of the limited edition sold will go to the Royal Marsden Hospital. They broke the Internet on launch day! 4. SUMMER FRIDAYS JET LAG MASK – £42 (64G), CULT BEAUTY If dewy is what you’re after this is right up your strasse. The vegan formula is jam-packed with nourishment – vitamins, ceramides and antioxidants – plus it’s gently exfoliating and leaves us with a gorgeous plumped glowy complexion that we like a lot. 5. NIP + FAB GLYCOLIC FIX EXFOLIATING MASK – £5.50, BOOTS In the crowded sheet face mask market this is hands down our favourite. The serum-loaded sheet leaves the skin smooth and hydrated like no other we’ve tried plus it’s easy. Twenty minutes relaxing once in place, then you gently rub the excess serum into skin. No rinsing required. If the addition of glycolic acid scares you, don’t worry, this is a gentle polish and works even on our sensitive skin.

WILL SIMPLE BE BEST?
any people want to “keep things simple” and leave everything in their Will to their spouse if they die first, or between their children if they die second. This has much to commend it, but it is always best to think about all the options as there are good reasons NOT to follow this structure without first considering alternatives. One consideration is protecting the assets of the first to die from being definitely taken into account for care fees funding for the survivor. If, for example, the first spouse (H) leaves their estate of £400k all to the survivor (W) making W worth £800,000, then W has £800,000 of assets available to be spent on their care and it will take much longer for the Local Authority to step in than if W was only worth £400,000. This might be what is wanted as paying for your care equals full control over choice, but H and W should consider leaving their £400,000 on first death into a trust for each other. H can give W a right to live in his share of the house or right to the income from the £400,000 of assets if they are of a cash nature and vice versa. This is not a fail safe protection of H’s £400,000 from being treated as W’s by the Local Authority, but does add at least the possibility of protection. Or H and W could use a discretionary trust so the survivor has no right to the £400,000, which offers more protection from the Local Authority, but may not be acceptable to the survivor and be seen as too uncertain by them. Capturing tax reliefs is another important consideration. If H and W hold shares in a business which qualify for business property relief, then this relief is “wasted” if those shares are left to their spouse as spouse relief means no Inheritance Tax is payable in any event. The shares could instead be left outright to adult children or put into a
M
discretionary trust. The spouse, adult children and wider family can be amongst the possible beneficiaries and so potentially receive dividends from the shares in the future. Or the shares can be bought by the other shareholders so cash is held in the trust instead. Capturing the Nil Rate Band and Residence Nil Rate Band on first death also needs careful consideration. Often families are more complex and people may have children from more than one marriage or relationship. Trusts can be used to make sure all family members are provided for as far as possible. No one situation will be the same as any other and detailed knowledgeable advice should be taken to ensure that fully informed decisions can be taken as to how H and W wish to leave their assets in their Wills; simply or otherwise! I For advice please contact Laura Banks, Senior Associate Solicitor, Wills & Estates on 0121 796 4027 or lbanks@thursfields.co.uk

his month the world turns pink and unites to raise awareness of breast cancer and help support those suffering with the disease. Thousands of fund-raising events and activities, large and small, corporate and private, will be going on across the country. Finding out about breast cancer signs and symptoms can help you understand what breast changes to look out for. Everyone’s breasts are different, and your breasts can change with age and at different times of the month. It’s important to get to know how your breasts normally look and feel so it will be easier to spot if there are any unusual changes for you. Picking up any abnormalities as early as possible is vital, which means it’s important that women self-examine regularly and know what to look for. Throughout a lifetime the levels of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone vary, causing women’s breasts to change. For younger women, the best time to self-examine the breasts is about three to five days after the period starts because breasts are not as tender or lumpy at this time in the monthly cycle. Women who’ve gone through menopause should examine their breasts on the same day every month.
T
SELF-EXAMINE To self-examine, place your right hand behind your head. With the middle fingers of your left hand, gently yet firmly press down using small motions to examine the entire right breast. Next, sit or stand. Feel your armpit, because breast tissue goes into that area. Gently squeeze the nipple, checking for discharge. Repeat the process on the left breast. Then stand in front of a mirror with your arms by your side. Look at your breasts directly and in the mirror. Look for changes in skin texture, such as dimpling, puckering, indentations, or skin that looks like an orange peel. Also note the shape and outline of each breast. Check to see if the nipple turns inward. Do the same with your arms raised above your head. I
CHANGES TO CHECK FOR
1. A lump on or around the breast. This may not be seen but might be felt either in the breast, upper chest or armpit. 2. Persistent lumpy area or unusual thickening of the breast tissue. 3. Any constant pain in part of the breast or armpit. 4. Change in size or shape of either of the breasts. 5. Redness or rash on the skin that looks like eczema. 6. Change in appearance or direction of the nipple on the breast. 7. Nipple discharge from the breast. If you do spot any unusual changes to your breasts you should get them checked out by your doctor. Breast Cancer Awareness Month runs from 1 to 31 October. To find out ways you can get involved in raising awareness and helping research, visit: wearitpink.org

NOW YOU SEE IT... ...NOW YOU DON’T Hidden walk-in pantry by Kuche & Bagno kucheandbagno.co.uk
ased on the back of the popularity of baking programmes, the walk-in pantry is making a comeback. We’ve been creating larder units with plugs, great storage and a cold slab for some time, but utilising more space and making a walk-in cupboard/room can have many benefits. Firstly, there’s more scope for being organised. You can see what you have which means less waste, you can buy in bulk and dispense into jars for ease of use because you have the space and everything is accessible. Secondly, increased storage from the pantry room could result in the need for less units in the kitchen which frees up more living space. Thirdly, metal pull-outs that are space saving can be heavy even when empty. A 600mm version, once full can be a bit of a struggle plus they’re not cheap.

HEART OF THE HOME SieMatic Classic range with natural granite work top by Kitchen Gallery kitchengallery.co.uk
A pantry could eliminate the need for pull-outs entirely. Consider placing the pantry on an external or a garage wall with an air vent if you can. This will allow cool air to circulate keeping it an optimum temperature. HIDDEN STORAGE The pantry is the same principle as a laundry station. Stacking a washing machine and dryer behind an attractive door or even a secret door makes the space more about living than function. It just becomes part of the living space in an unobtrusive way. A hidden bar is a fun addition too with LED lighting, mirrors, shelving, etc. DOOR CANDY It’s possible to elevate a kitchen from great to showstopping by incorporating beautiful handles. Companies like Buster and Punch who make industrial style handles that are a work of art as well as Turnstyle Designs with their hand finished brass versions are both wow-inducing. Check out Glass Designs too for their pearl handles. Spending less on units and more on handles is a way of achieving a high end look for less.

SPECIAL K
THE NEW ALL-WEATHER SSANGYONG KORANDO IS AS TOUGH AS THEY COME AND IT’S A BIT OF A HEAD-TURNER TOO, SAYS SUE COOKE listen to the weather reports avidly, especially at this autumnal time of the year. With the amount of driving I do, I want to know if I will have to peer with increasing trepidation through the windscreen at the world slithering by. If I am driving an SUV, it’s not so much of an issue, particularly if it’s a sturdy beast produced by SsangYong. The new Korando has a choice of two-wheel or all-wheel-drive, so with the latter I can swagger off my snow-covered drive, swoosh through any flooded dips on a country road or shimmy over a few urban potholes without even noticing. The exterior design of this fourth generation Korando, in my opinion, is head-turning and builds on the previous model, launched in 2013, which was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. But then Pininfarina, the Italian design house, is

owned by the Indian engineering conglomerate Mahindra & Mahindra which also owns 75 per cent of SsangYong Motor. So you would expect the newly designed Korando to look good.
BIRDS WING The exterior keeps the striking ‘birds wing’ front grille but gains a modern sporty look with curved shoulder lines, colour keyed bumper, rear spoiler and rear skid plate as well as daytime running lights. Fire the ignition and behind the steering wheel an image of the Korando zooms into view with a musical accompaniment. The spacious cabin is stylish and durable, with leather seats on the Ultimate trim, and lots of storage spaces. The rear floor is flat, so will hold three passengers in comfort. The

The list on the introductory ELX model includes electronic cruise control, DAB/RDS/Bluetooth radio, six airbags, automatic lights and wipers.
PADDLESHIFT The auto transmission has paddleshift behind the steering wheel to change the gears manually, which I think all cars should have, so that the driver can keep an eye on the road ahead. As we are officially in autumn, a heated steering wheel and dual climate control are both welcome. Ergonomic seats are comfortable. The Pioneer trim is aimed at the caravan and towing market with a towing capacity for the petrol model of 1,500kg and 2,000kg for the diesel. In January 2020, SsangYong is launching a manual 1.5litre GDI-turbo petrol engine which produces 163PS max power. Following all other manufacturers, in 2021 the Korando can be purchased powered by all-electric! All models in the SsangYong range are covered by a seven-year/150,000-mile warranty and SsangYong says that from order to delivery will take just three weeks! Now that’s a big promise. In fact everything about the SsangYong Korando is big and brawny with a determined air which will guarantee you safe passage no matter what the weatherman predicts this autumn. I

YOUNG, GIFTED & BRUMMIE
ormed just this year, Midlands four-piece pop-punk band, Like Giants have been named finalists in the annual Fireball Hottest Band competition with the chance of performing on stage with some of their heroes in the Fuelling the Fire tour. Now in its fourth year, the competition, organised by Fireball and Academy Events sees judges choose just one band from each region across the UK to open a gig at the respective regional O2 Academy performing with bands such as this year’s headliners Less Than Jake as well as Goldfinger and Save Ferris among others.
F
MIND-BLOWING For a band just starting out, it’s pretty impressive. Frontman Dan says: “We didn’t get our social channels up and running until May but saw the Fireball comp on Facebook and thought we’d apply. We were all so stoked when we got the e-mail to say we were finalists. To stand on the same stage as bands like Less Than Jake is mind-blowing.” The band is busy gigging across the country, last month London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Derby taking their brand of pop-punk to as many people who’ll listen, getting their name out and building up experience while holding down full-time jobs.
The four-piece consists of Dan on lead vocals and guitar, Sam on guitar, Billy on bass and Ben the drummer. In a round about way they all ended up together after Dan came up with a few song ideas to which friend Sam added some guitar and brought Billy into the fold to add some bass who knew Ben and they’ve been together since. They share the writing responsibilities with inspiration coming from personal experience mainly as well as random words or a book. Dan says: “Any story close to us really. We just want to make sure every song is relatable.” Generally, a catchy chorus comes first. ESCAPISM They’ve worked with producer Matt O’Grady who has produced for bands like Deaf Havana which was a bit of a dream. Dan says: “We met him, he was nice enough and we just hit it off.” The vibe is upbeat and happy and for those three minutes the band wants the listener to feel good. They regularly receive messages from youngsters suffering from depression, which band members have been affected by too, so this escapism is important. The judges of Fireball Hottest Band described Like Giants as ‘bringing with them heavier riff-driven tracks, with hard-hitting, but also soft melodic vocal melodies which has helped set them apart from the ever-expanding pop-punk genre’. The band’s influences include Neck Deep, A Day to Remember and State Champs. Debut EP Sovereign is out now which includes their first single Cut and Run (check out Spotify). RIGHT DEAL Though not signed to a label yet, the guys have got their heads screwed on and feel the time’s not right just now. “We’re too new to push for a better experience if that makes sense.” Instead, the band is focusing on writing, performing and building their following. I’m sure if they were offered the right deal they wouldn’t say no, but they’re just not chasing it right now. The right deal is important. Top of the wish list are Hopeless Records and Pure Noise Records. Long term goals are a major tour and lots of festivals. Short term, beyond Fireball, the band is planning to get back into the studio as well as more gigging around the UK before heading to New York at the end of November. I

CLOSE WITHÁ
SABRA KHAN The executive director of SAMPAD South Asian Arts and producer of BEDLAM Arts and Mental Health Festival discusses this month’s 12-day celebration of dance, theatre, film, visual art and hip hop BEEN THERE, DONE THAT I started my career straight out of university as an administrator with Women and Theatre in Highgate, Birmingham. I worked with three incredibly talented women there – Janice Connolly, Polly Wright and Jo Broadwood and this gave me the foundations of my work to date. From there, I was freelance for a long time working in London and Birmingham for organisations including Queerfest (the precursor for Fierce Festival), Moving Hands Theatre Company, Warwick Arts Centre, world renowned dancer Nahid Siddiqui, Town Hall Symphony Hall and ACE Dance and Music. IT’S WHAT I DO Alongside my day job of executive director of SAMPAD South Asian Arts, I’m the producer of BEDLAM Arts and Mental Health Festival for Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust. I pull the programme together with our partners and make sure the festival is on course and on budget with my very small team! At a time when awareness of mental health is increasing, BEDLAM is one of a handful of festivals focussing on creativity and mental health and we are fortunate to have the support of the Arts Council, those have who have mental health experiences and a range of partners. WHAT I’D LIKE TO SEE? I’m doing some very exciting work both as part of my day job at SAMPAD, where I’ve produced the new BEDLAM theatre commission for this year’s festival, No Bond So Strong, by local playwright Olivia Winteringham and at BEDLAM itself. I’d love to see BEDLAM continue to become established as a leader in this area, both regionally and nationally, increasing awareness of mental health issues and reducing stigma. 64 birmingham living
BIGGEST SUCCESS I’m very proud to have done lots of learning as an adult. Learning to swim and learning to play piano, both of which I love. Professionally, I’m delighted to continue to work on festivals as I enjoy the momentum and teamwork involved. From coordinating Birmingham Artsfest for a number of years, producing the outdoor spectacular Bollywood Steps (part of the Town Hall’s 175th celebrations), to ArtSoak, a very small arts festival in Selly Oak and BEDLAM. BIGGEST LESSON LEARNED I’d allow myself more lead-in times for festivals or projects to secure funding and artists. However, it’s not always possible and I’ve learnt that it will come together. After many years of working in Birmingham I know if I come across something that I need to call on help or support for – I’ll find someone who knows someone who can do it. WHAT I LIKE ABOUT BRUM My favourite thing about Birmingham is the collaborative nature of the industry I’m in. I’ve found that large organisations, small companies and independent creatives work well together and are generally supportive of initiatives such as BEDLAM. There is such diverse talent in Birmingham and I’m very proud of that. DOWNTIME? Right now, I’m working my way through Derry Girls and Stranger Things 3! After BEDLAM I plan to get back to improving my piano playing. I BEDLAM Arts & Mental Health festival runs from 1 to 12 October and coincides with World Mental Health Day on 10 October. CLASSIC INTERIORS BROTHERS GARETH AND MAX DAVIES’ COMPANY IS SETTING NEW STANDARDS IN THE HIGHLY COMPETITIVE KITCHEN BUSINESS – AND HAS THE AWARDS TO PROVE IT he kitchen business is a crowded place. With more homeowners than ever deciding to improve rather than move, leading market research published earlier this year showed the industry is worth a staggering £3billion with sales predicted to rise by more than £50million in 2019 in what is generally accepted as a ‘slow’ year due to UK economic uncertainty. won. The most recent was a double triumph being named Kitchen Retailer of the Year at the prestigious national BKU Awards in London as well as being honoured in the Best Customer Service category. They have also been nominated as Showroom of the Year for their new Edgbaston centre at this month’s elite Designer Kitchen magazine awards. And Kirstie Smith has also been nominated for the KBSA’s Young Designer of the Year STYLE STATEMENT Max said: “I know it’s a bit of a cliché but the kitchen is the heart of a home and that’s true more than ever. It’s the hub. It always has been, but now there is a realisation with people about how much time they really spend in this one room in the home. So, the demand to have a kitchen that reflects your lifestyle and how you want to use the room is greater than ever.” Classic has two clear parts to the business, both targeted at the quality end of the market. “We sell modern, cutting edge German kitchens because the demand for this product is so big,” explained Max. “And we also concentrate on traditional top quality British-made kitchens.” Locally-made is important and the company has had a close relationship for many years with elite kitchen manufacturers Mereway which has a large factory in Birmingham. This strategy of choosing the right products for the market and then delivering excellent service has seen Classic come through tough economic times where others have failed. “The kitchen business is a crowded space,” said Max.
expand further into the Warwick and Leamington Spa area in future. PUSHING FORWARD Classic was established in 1987 by the brothers’ father as a very small kitchen replacement service called Classic Kitchens based in Lakeside, Redditch. It was mostly about supplying replacement doors and units. Gareth joined the business 17 years ago straight out of university and Max gave up his solicitor’s job to hop on board in 2012. Together they have really pushed the company on in recent years – and their success can be seen by the number of top industry awards Classic and its 25-strong team have

STAYING POWER “Lots of people set up and are around for a short time but then fall away when the economic climate dips. We’ve been through three recessions now and come through each time. We believe that’s because of what we offer and the service we give.” The new Birmingham showroom at Harborne Road has proved to be everything Max and Gareth hoped. “The feedback has been incredibly positive,” said Max. “We believed in taking our time to find the exact right place for the new showroom – it took us three years to find the site. We will follow the same strategy with our plans for another showroom in Warwickshire, either around Warwick or Leamington Spa. These decisions are vital to get right.” I

IN THE CITY WITH MARK TUGHAN, FOUNDER OF THE GLEE CLUB TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I am the founder and CEO of the Glee Clubs, five venues hosting live comedy, music, cabaret and spoken word events. Prior to this I was an investment banker and would regularly visit venues like the Comedy Store and travel to the Edinburgh Fringe. The initial plan was to give myself five years to see if I could make it as an entrepreneur. HOW DO YOU GET INTO TOWN? It’s the train today as I’m raising a glass or two at the Glee’s 25th birthday show. Our offices are in Southside and my usual morning is the school run and into the office by eight. Sadly, it’s usually a car, all along the Bristol Road from Rubery to Southside. HOW’S THE COMMUTE? It’s not bad actually as I have the company of an eight-year-old and a seven-year-old most of the way! The way home is ok too, as I frequently stop at the Edgbaston Priory Club for a game of squash after work.
HAVING A LAUGH:
Mark opened Birmingham’s
Glee Club in 1994 as the first dedicated comedy club outside London
IS BRUM A GOOD PLACE TO WORK IN? Brum and the Glee saved me from a life where I could have ended up spending 30 years in high finance. That could have been rewarding in one sense but not in a meaningful sense. I love it here, Birmingham, it’s people, but especially its sense of humour. Everyone has always been kind to me and my staff. COFFEE BREAK? Quarter Horse Coffee for a break and meetings when I want to get out of the office. LUNCHTIME? Sometimes I bring my own, other times a toastie in EAT. We’re all big Café Soya fans at the Glee, so that’s our go to choice for a working lunch. We’ve also been known to do a breakfast run to Wetherspoons on a Friday! POWERWALKING? It’s not for me. I try and play squash three times a week and no matter how bad a day I’ve had, hitting that court does tune me out of work, albeit for 45 minutes or so. If there’s time I’ll sit in a sauna afterwards, I’ve done some of my best thinking at high temperatures! WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE CITY? Got to be Southside. It’s evolved so much over 25 years, but in a good way. I do like Digbeth and the whole dining club vibe there. AFTERWORK PINT? Recently we’ve done the Distillery and also Digbeth’s Old Crown.
This month the Glee Club celebrates its 25th
anniversary.

HOW CAN THE CITY BE MADE BETTER? It would be great if it was more joined up with an enlarged tram system, connecting the various hubs of activity and even extending out to the closer suburbs. Many more EV charging points would encourage EV use. I think the Smithfield revamp could be transformational to Birmingham, but it needs to have plenty of green space built into it.
