EDITOR’S VIEW We’ve interviewed a cross-section of brilliant young people who aspire to greatness while carrying Birmingham’s name proudly forward

ne of the regular features that always excites me each month in Birmingham Living is Young, Gifted and Brummie. There’s something really special and uplifting about turning the spotlight on the city’s brightest lights of the future – and then watching them go on to become established success stories. As is often mentioned, Birmingham has the youngest profile of any city in Europe and this dynamism is reflected perfectly in YGB. Over the past year we’ve interviewed a cross-section of brilliant young people who are aspiring to greatness and carrying Birmingham’s name proudly forward. These have included singer-songer writers, classical musicians, rock bands and dancers, actors, a magician, social media and digital entrepreneurs, an awardwinning chef and even Britain’s top wine sommelier! Sport features prominently with young up-and-comers from tennis, swimming, boxing, cycling and more. Three of our our YGBs have just become champions in the past few weeks – tennis ace Jordanne Whiley at Wimbledon, cyclist Lucy Shaw at the UK National Championships and boxer Tommy Langford, who won his first world title belt and is interviewed on page 68 of this issue. We’re delighted to have won a special accolade ourselves this month, with Birmingham Living nominated as Midlands Magazine of the Year for the third year in a row. A big thank you to everyone who supports us and enjoys reading us. We love writing about this vibrant city of ours and it’s great to be recognised.

GRID GIRL

Suzi Perry on working the lights at the Grand Theatre, a love of live music and curries… and why F1’s glamour will never go to her head ho wouldn’t want to be Suzi Perry? Jetting around the world in the slipstream of the most glamorous sport on the planet, Formula One. Chatting it up with Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button one minute, rubbing shoulders with the world’s richest and most famous stars and playboys the next. Pure dreamsville…. Well, it’s really not quite like that. Sure, Suzi is on very matey terms with the likes of Lewis and yes, she does get to meet the A-listers the rest of us would never get within the start-finish straight of seeing. But while Suzi readily admits she adores her job fronting BBC’s Grand Prix shows, she makes no bones about the fact that it’s also ‘bloody hard work’.

W

REVISITING ROOTS “I’m away from home for 20 weeks of the year, travelling around the world,” she says. So when she gets the chance to come back to Britain, as she did in July for the British GP, it’s a real treat. What’s more, being based at Silverstone she was handily

place to ‘revisit’ her Birmingham roots. Suzi was brought up in Wolverhampton (she’s still an avid Wolves fan) where she attended Smestow School and had an after-hours job working with the lighting at the Grand Theatre. She went on to study business and finance at the local Poly (now the University of Wolverhampton). GUT INSTINCT After graduating, a short stint of fashion modeling in Japan and making commercials across Europe (one was for Kenco coffee) got Suzi used to travelling, an attribute that was to prove highly useful when she entered the world of TV – first as a sports reporter with Sky TV. She became the first woman to present the World Superbikes series and speedway, and then most famously to front BBC’s MotoGP motorcycle coverage for 13 years. Her CV also includes The Gadget Show, Superstars and Treasure Hunt among many others. Her formative Midlands roots remain hugely important to Suzi. Both her parents were selfemployed and worked really hard. Her father was

a music promoter and had to spend some time in the States when Suzi was growing up. Her mum worked for a cosmetics company from home. It was all far from plain sailing though when her father’s business went under and her parents were suddenly bankrupt. That’s when she says she learned that if you want something in life you have to go and make it happen. “Follow your gut instincts.” Putting the hard work ethic into practice, Suzi spent her spare time as a stage electrician at the Grand Theatre while still at school, earning £120 for six nights a week – not bad for a 15-year-old. Three years later at 18 she started her own business making merchandise for bands. “I grew up surrounded by music because of my father and my godfather Mel Galley from Whitesnake. My love of live music remains with me,” she says. “A great gig followed by a curry is the best night out. I’m a big fan of Motown, Seventies’ West Coast artists; The Eagles, James Taylor, Carol King, Joe Cocker… and the Eighties too. It’s a long eclectic list.” Just as Suzi loves live music, she’s also an addict for live TV. “My passion is for live broadcasting, whatever the platform. It wakens the senses. It’s a tough but incredible job.” TOP GEAR With such a positive ‘live it now’ outlook, Suzi isn’t one for regrets. She does admit to one ‘probably bad decision’ when turning down the chance to be part of the original Top Gear team with Jeremy Clarkson. At the time of writing, however, it seemed there was a chance it may have come full circle – as the national media was filled with reports of Suzi being lined up to co-present the ‘new’ Top Gear with Chris Evans. Life looks like remaining as glamorous as ever for the fastest lady on TV. “Yes, there are pinch moments when I think: Wow this is so special. ootankhamun, You Can Call Me Owl, Florence Nightin’owl… it’s difficult to escape the amusing puns and vibrantly decorated owls that have become fond fixtures of the city, confusing tourists and delighting schoolchildren. From Sutton Coldfield to Northfield, 89 large owls and 122 of their offspring or owlets are gracing the pavements, brightening up the dullest of days until 27 September. There’s a bigger purpose than just raising a smile and offering up a photo opportunity though. The Big Hoot is Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s fabulously ambitious fundraising project which they hope will raise a whopping £500,000 when the owls are auctioned off in October. Brum royalty Ozzy Osbourne is probably the most famous face to get involved and while he might have the least imaginatively named owl – Ozzy’s Owl, it’s creating an increased buzz about the project that only a global rock legend could muster. His son Louis was treated at BCH as a child, so it’s a cause close to Ozzy’s heart. The smaller 122 owlets have been created by local school pupils involving 25,000 children from 120 schools embracing the wider community and giving the whole project a feel-good vibe that connects the city. It’s not all positive though. A handful of owls have been damaged either by over-zealous children or thoughtless vandals. Thankfully all have been returned to their former magnificent glory, but the almost parental backlash on social media confirms the success of the project. It’s got us hooked… I

FOOD & DRINK

GLEN WATSON The executive chef director at the Belfry Hotel & Resort has worked with some of the food world’s greatest names – but give him good old toad in the hole with onion gravy any day! Tell us about your cooking Despite having worked in the industry for more than 30 years, no two days are the same. I’m essentially classically trained through hotels such as The Savoy and Georg V Paris. Coming from Scotland where there is an abundance of quality produce has certainly shaped my cooking style and been reflected in what we serve here at the Belfry. There’s the French influence too having worked with the Rouxs for seven years. The base of all the best cooking is following the basics correctly.

How did you become a chef? I fell into it actually. At school I was good with numbers and accountancy was part of my studies. As a teenager I needed to earn money so I worked in a local family-run hotel, peeling and prepping vegetables and making basic desserts. I guess my mother’s flair as a dress designer and maker is where my creativity in the kitchen comes from. Early in my career I didn’t have influences as such but after visiting Gleneagles for a trade fair I just knew I had to work there. I was mentored by Alan Hill and then Anton Edelmann, both ex-Mossiman, and a family by the name of Roux! What do you eat when at home? We eat simply but well. If it’s good weather, the BBQ is always lit. And if our neighbours smell the charcoal

then it soon ends up being a gathering. I could eat chicken caesar seven days a week but my favourite by far is toad in the hole with a great onion gravy and mash – with as much butter in it as the potatoes will take! Plus a drop of red wine to wash it down. Who’s the best chef in the world and why? And who’s the best in Brum? That depends what food style you like. If you ask me the best hotel stay I’ve ever had, it has to be Raymond Blanc’s Manoir aux Quatres Saison, together with an amazing breakfast. Best dinner, the Fat Duck. My overall favourite place to dine is Mossimans club in Belgravia. As

for in Brum – I haven’t dined in everyone’s restaurant so it would be unfair to comment. Is the customer always right? It is their opinion that matters as they are the ones paying the bill and you want to ensure that they return. What was your favourite food as a kid? Toad in the hole and rhubarb crumble and custard. Food heaven and food hell? Heaven is Iberico ham with a glass of fine French wine. Hell is tripe.

Invest in a bottle of high-quality olive oil. Just a small drizzle can really bring out the flavour of pizza, mozzarella, pasta, fish and meat. If you weren’t a chef, what would you be? Pretty unimaginable but I can build engines and cars, so perhaps a mechanic! Or back to my school plan before starting to peel potatoes, an accountant. What do you recommend from this evening’s menu? We have just launched a new a la carte menu in the Ryder Grill, so there is an endless list of mouthwatering options but a timeless classic is the 28-day aged chateaubriand with all the garnish and lashings of sauce béarnaise. RESTAURANT REVIEW

THE MALT SHOVEL AT BARSTON Barston Lane, Barston, Solihull B92 0JP. Tel: 01675 443 223 www.themaltshovelatbarston.com here’s nothing more deflating when you’re about to embark on a restaurant review than a colleague saying: “Is that the Beefeater on the roundabout?” Perhaps there’s nothing wrong with a Beefeater, but it wasn’t quite what we had in mind and thankfully as we drove through the gorgeous village of Barston our spirits lifted. The Malt Shovel is privately-owned and muchloved which was evident from the moment we pulled into the car park. The attention to detail showered on the façade of the building was phenomenal, postcardpretty and award-winning as it turns out. Regularly crowned winners in its category of Solihull in Bloom, the impressive floral hanging baskets were almost the size of small cars.

T

FISH MAN CALLING The pub itself is full of rustic charm with a cool worn metal bar, classic wooden furniture and more than a touch of Farrow and Ball-type paintwork. The day we ventured in was sunny, so we took advantage of the stunning garden which featured more oversized hanging baskets spilling over with colour. Happy days! The menu is changed weekly and had been amended the morning we arrived. Fish is one of head chef Max’s passions, so naturally that featured heavily

on the menu. Taking the lead from his ‘fish man’, Max gets a call on a Monday morning from his guy in the market who lets him know what’s particularly good and he creates the menu based on that to ensure quality and freshness. While we’re on the subject, in terms of freshness and sustainability, the Malt Shovel leads the way with many ingredients coming from the same village let alone the same region – eggs are from a lady down the road and potatoes are a special type cultivated by a local grower. There are a few favourites on the menu that could never change as there’d be uproar from the regulars. Fishcakes are one and kidneys are another, so we thought we ought to give them a whirl and ordered them as starters. Before our starters arrived Max treated us to a tasting plate including two of his brand new dishes – sweet juicy scallops with a silky cauliflower puree which blew us away and a moreish tuna Massaman packed with thai flavours. We wanted to drink the remaining sauce from the bowl it was so good. We refrained. Just.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

The fishcake was a whopper with a soft poached egg perched on top under a blanket of hollandaise. It was crunchy on the outside, moist inside with a really nice hit of dill and great hollandaise. The kidneys were fantastic served with a beautiful sauce and crispy bacon. We could see why these dishes were going nowhere. BUCKING THE TREND As we sat back and enjoyed the garden, we got to chatting about the staff. For an industry renowned for its high turnover, The Malt Shovel is bucking the trend. The most recent member of the team joined five years ago and some such as general manager Helen and head chef Max have been there for almost 15. It really showed. Back to the food. I’ve had venison with chocolate before and found it unpleasant, so I was intrigued to try Max’s version. Apparently, the sauce has strictly one button of chocolate, otherwise it upsets the balance. Served with a potato gratin, kale and miniature figs soaked in white rum it was

september 2015

delicious. The sauce was really good. We could just taste the chocolate and it worked a treat. The pan fried hake served with crayfish butter, clams and soft chunks of sweet potato was right up my street. Hake’s one of my favourite fish anyway and served like this it was the star of the show. The crayfish and clams provided little gems of sweet and saltiness which I loved. The portion sizes were quite hefty and we could have lived without a pud, but the dessert menu was just as appealing as the rest. A white chocolate and raspberry delice with pear sorbet and two spoons arrived with perfect macchiatos. The delice was lovely and the pear sorbet was a winner which I could have nibbled all day long. I know it’s annoying when food reviews are too glowing. You think it’s too good to be true – so do I, however there was nothing to fault. OK the portions were a bit too big for us, but that wasn’t a problem and at one point there was a wasp dive bombing the chardonnay, but we’re really clutching at straws. Everything about it was bloomin’ lovely. Honest. I

BEST BEERS Expert Rob Price looks at the huge variety of ales on the market and picks his favourites

move away this month from wine to one of my other favourite alcohols – beer. I also run beer tastings alongside my wine events and they are proving increasingly popular. The UK has more than 1,100 breweries, and with thousands of imported brews, they contribute to around 100 different beer styles. So just where to start? A good place is with a quick refresher on the four main ingredients in beer. First, water. With over 90 per cent water, this is quite important and has a profound effect on the taste of the beer. High alkali is good for dark beers, high calcium sulphate good for pale ales. Second, hops. They add aroma, flavour and bitterness – and with more varieties than grape, you can see why there are so many different beers, just like wine. Next, grain. Most often barley, which is too hard to be fermented, so it’s soaked, partially germinated and then dried in a kiln. This is called malting. And last but not least, yeast. It converts sugar into alcohol, and many different types are used, again contributing to the distinctive style of each beer.

A

HOW TO TASTE BEER You can just gulp it down, but there is merit in tasting it properly, just like wine. Look – Does it have a head, and what’s its colour? We will all have perceptions based on what we see, but it’s better to sniff and drink to form a considered opinion. Sniff – Roasty, toasty or chocolaty smells depend more on the grain used. Herbs, spice, citrus and other fruit aromas more from hops. Yeast and the

32 birmingham living

fermentation process may add buttery smells. It’s all very personal, so go wild and be adventurous when you describe your beer. Slurp – Yes like wine. Move it around your mouth. How light or heavy is it? Does the flavour match the aroma? It is bitter, mild, smooth. Is it warm or cold? But most important, do you like it? DIFFERENT BEERS Light and crisp: Includes lagers and pale ales. Aromas of lemons and biscuit. Buy Helles, Pale Ale, and Pilsner. Citrus and fruity: These beers use more hops which give refreshing, bitter citrus flavours that last… grapefruit, berries, and tropical fruit. Buy Indian Pale Ale, Bitter, and Golden. Malt and toffee: Slightly sweeter and can warm the palate. Toffee, caramel, biscuit, nuts. Buy Amber, Oktoberfest, Bock, and Dubbel. Roasted and dark: Normally brewed with darker malts for a rich, full-bodied flavour. Chocolate, coffee, liquorice, toast. Buy Stout, Brown, Porter, and Mild. I recently attended a beer tasting run by the UK’s first accredited woman Beer Sommelier, Sophie Atherton, who in 2013 won Beer Sommelier of the Year. We tasted a wide range of beers – and surprisingly it seemed harder to spit out beer than wine. I thought it would be the other way around! Anyhow, you’ll find my personal favourite beers in this month’s Four To Try… Cheers! I

NIBBLES and

SHORTS

Birmingham has a lively and buzzing bar and restaurant scene. Here, we present our insider guide to what’s going on in your city’s eateries and drinking dens FRIENDLY BAGGIES ON TARGET Let’s hear some ‘oohs and ahhs’ for the superb off-the-pitch team at West Bromwich Albion after the club was named runner-up in the Premier League for hospitality by Visit Britain. Narrowly missing out on the top spot to Manchester City (boo, hiss!!), the Baggies were highly praised in the mystery shopper-style survey.

GIN AWARD A TONIC FOR BRUM Birmingham-made Langley’s No. 8 Gin has been hailed as the UK’s best at the prestigious Great Taste Awards, receiving Three-Star Gold status – the only gin to be given the top award this year. Co-founder of the brand Mark Dawkins said: “The product was 18 months in development and it was clearly time well spent.”

BIG CHANGES AT THE PLOUGH Dining will soon be ‘going up’ in the world at The Plough in Harborne, we hear as Upstairs at The Plough is to launch in November after completion of a £750,000 project providing a first-floor extension housing new private dining and meeting rooms. Ground floor renovations will allow an increase of 40 covers and provide a new bar, pizza kitchen and coffee bar.

SPICING UP THE CUBE Our spies tell us that a new restaurant specialising in spicy seafood is going down a treat since it opened near The Cube at the end of July. The Vivaanta team has taken traditional Indian cooking and put an artistic twist on it. Vivaanta apparently means ‘to live well gracefully’ – sounds good to us!

WHO NEEDS KNIVES AND FORKS… The £1 million refit of a previously derelict Colmore Row building into one of the city’s most prominent restaurants has been completed. Lobster and beer restaurant Nosh and Quaff, was opened last month by the Lasan Group. Central to the new Nosh and Quaff ethos is hearty food. Be warned… cutlery isn’t provided unless requested!

ROSETTES JOY AT THE OAK ROOM They’re celebrating at the Oak Room restaurant at Moor Hall Hotel & Spa in Sutton Coldfield after being awarded two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence. The team tells us that only five per cent of restaurants in the UK are of a standard which is worthy of two rosettes, which are awarded after ‘mystery’ visits by AA inspectors.

SPOT

OF BOTHER

If you’re a leopard the more spots the better! For the rest of us, lumps, bumps and blemishes are a never-ending source of stress and anxiety… or many people, a skin condition is more than just a skin condition – it can be a constant source of anxiety that dents their confidence, both socially and professionally. This is especially true at this time of year when it seems everyone else is showing off their perfect bodies and faultless complexions in the summer sunshine. Some skin conditions may simply disappear over time, while others will respond to specialist creams or antibiotics. Some, however, need the advice and experience of an expert such as a dermatologist who can investigate the root causes of a problem, take a wider view of your overall health and lifestyle and formulate a treatment plan. Here’s our guide to the most common skin problems, put together with the help of the experts at Birmingham’s Priory and Edgbaston hospitals… ACNE: It’s an unfortunate quirk of fate that acne surfaces at the most sensitive of times – the teenage years. It’s a disease that affects 85 per cent of teenagers in varying degrees. In many cases it eases with age, although people in their 50s can still experience problems. The most severe cases are typically treated with low-dose oral antibiotics and topical retinoids. EXCESSIVE SWEATING: Hyperhidrosis is a common condition where the body sweats even when it doesn’t need to regulate its temperature. It’s not usually a health worry but can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. If you find that sweating is interfering with your daily life, various methods of treatment are available. PIGMENTATION DISORDERS: A skin pigmentation disorder affects the colour of the skin. This may be a ‘hyperpigmentation’ or darkening of an area of the skin, often caused by sun damage, inflammation or acne.

F

september 2015

ALLERGIC RASHES: Rashes can look unsightly – they change the colour and texture of the skin, while frequently itching and interfering with daily life and sleep. Apart from treating the rash itself, it’s important to consult a dermatologist to find out what’s causing the problem to prevent future episodes. ROSACEA: As the name suggests, rosacea is a condition where the face appears flushed and red. There may also be small red bumps or pustules. There is no agreement on what causes the condition, but treatment can include photorejuvenation and oral medications. Although there is no quick fix, the disorder may be brought under control within a couple of years. WARTS: While not a health worry, warts can be unsightly and even distressing. They’re most common on hands and feet and are caused by the HPV virus. They can be caught from touching the skin, or by sharing items such as towels, with an infected person. SUSPICIOUS MOLES & SKIN CANCER: Moles are very common and usually pose no problems to health. However, you should monitor your own carefully and any suspicious mole should always be checked by a professional, particularly if it starts to change in size, colour or shape, or if its border becomes ragged or you notice bleeding. ECZEMA/PSORIASIS AND DRY SKIN: These conditions tend to share the common issues of inflammatory skin linked to dryness and rashes. Treatments range from specialist ointments, creams or lotions to photo/light techniques. HAIR LOSS: The most common hair loss condition is alopecia which can be caused by genetics, hormone variations, mineral deficiencies or even a reaction to hairdressing tools. Specialist treatment is available for this often distressing condition. NAIL FUNGUS: Onychomycosis is surprisingly common. Around eight per cent of adults may be affected by a fungus on either finger or toe nails, shown by a thickening and a yellow or cloudy appearance. BEAUTY

LA BRAND LANDS IN BRUM n a year of retail firsts for Brum, there’s a new kid on the city’s beauty block too. Celebrity favourite – although new to me – Murad, launched its first counter in Birmingham over the summer at Debenhams. We’d heard great things about the LA-based brand and with endorsements from the likes of the Peter Pan of popular TV, Fearne Cotton, we were first in line. Dr Murad has been honing his skincare range for 30 years based on his ‘inclusive health’ philosophy which incorporates a three step regime – Looking Better (topical care), Living Better (nutrition and exercise) and Feeling Better (stress management). The products have their basis firmly in science, but the ideology is common sense. It’s stuff we all know, but perhaps don’t practice for whatever reason. Time being a biggie I suspect. After meeting the team, I was ‘treated’ to a skin health assessment with Murad’s dreaded YouthCam which analyses fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, redness, inflammation and pores. ‘This might not be good for one’s self esteem,’ I thought, but actually, the results were not too shabby, so I felt pretty chipper. Based on the findings, I was whisked through an oversized door behind the counter and into a calming treatment room for a tailored facial. I swiftly forgot we were in the heart of the Bullring and relaxed under a squishy duvet. I zoned out totally and lost track of time, but I know I was cleansed, scrubbed, massaged, oiled and moisturised. The face, neck and shoulder massage was super relaxing and the products felt gentle.

I

I swiftly forgot we were in the heart of

the Bullring and relaxed under a squishy duvet

48 birmingham living

I’m used to looking a bit pink after a facial and with a meeting soon afterwards I was armed with my make-up bag, however a glance in the mirror showed not a hint of redness. I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere aside from the gym without make-up, so a business meeting was a stretch, but I did it. A slick of mascara and a dab of lip gloss and I was done - all fresh faced and dewy. I’ve used two products religiously since my treatment – Intensive-C Radiance Peel which I use twice a week and leaves me feeling really smooth and the Invisiblur Perfecting Shield used as a primer. Think Nanoblur, but heaps better plus the SPF30 is a big bonus. I’ve got the topical care part of the philosophy nailed and nutrition, just. As for stress management, it’s a work in progress. I

AUCTIONS

RETURN OF BROWN Farewell flatpack, welcome back traditional wood

ake a look around you, and whether at home or work you won’t see a lot of ‘brown furniture’ about the place. Today’s styles dictate that everything has to be ultra-modern, clean, crisp and angular. But it hasn’t always been like this of course! Recent years have been hard on traditional furniture with many homemakers preferring more versatile and up-to-date pieces. This has been justified through every factor imaginable from the size and layout of modern homes and change of interior fashions to the decline of the American export market. But recent auction market reports and trade articles have attempted to halt the downward trend, encouraging campaigns to #BringBackBrownFurniture; sending collectors and traders rushing to the auction rooms to grab their bargains before the rest of the world clocks on.

T

ENCOURAGING The fantastic prices that are being achieved for Edwardian cabinets and mahogany tables in particular is an encouraging sign the market still appreciates pieces of fine antique brown furniture – and that the unspoken rule that open-plan, flatpack living is good homemaking is being questioned Trends of jewellery, fashion and accessories have voyaged through the vintage, retro and upcycled, leading buyers to invest in small well-crafted pieces. Now with more stability and reassurance appearing in the economy, young buyers and new collectors are becoming braver with their investments. They are venturing into the antiques market, currently brimming with fine quality, handsome pieces of brown furniture patiently waiting to come back into fashion. Hopefully they are glimpsing at a permanent upturn in the market, signifying that the many wonderful Victorian work-tables, corner cupboards and bureaus might soon find the loving homes they deserve. FILM STAR FOR A

DAY

Sue Cooke enjoys a walk-on part as her sexy F-Type R Convertible has them reaching for their phones in the car parks of Sutton Coldfield had made a quick shopping trip to Sutton Coldfield. Quick because I did not wish to be away from the Jaguar I was road testing for too long. I rushed back to the car park to find a man taking photos of the F-Type convertible. He greeted me with ‘I like your car’ and we exchanged pleasantries. As I drove off I watched him in my rear view mirror using his phone to take a video, recording the deep rumble of sound which emitted from the quad exhaust pipes! And other unusual things happened to me this week. A young lad leant so far out of the window of his dad’s car to see the Jaguar behind that I thought he was about to meet the tarmac. And another group of lads were whooping and jumping up and down as I drove past. Of course I knew this was all down to the gorgeous sleek styling of what must be one of the world’s most beautiful open tops. But it did make me feel pretty special, if only for a while. The exterior has no door handles on show, but press the unlock key and they emerge. The low performance seats are in premium leather and have R embossed headrests. They fit

and hug perfectly, so that a feeling of being one with the car comes very naturally. On the inside, the driver is faced by a large screen and a dash which is clean and uncluttered. Fiddle with the welllabelled air-con buttons and two vents rise majestically. The steering wheel is flat bottomed in typical sports car style and paddleshifts sit behind if you fancy a little more excitement when changing gear. There is an optional 12speaker, 770w Meridian Surround Sound System costing £1,300 but I much preferred to absorb the cacophony of reverberations from the exhaust. The very fast 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine surprises by automatically cutting out when the automatic brake is applied and imperceptibly starting again when the accelerator is pressed. This makes the F-Type eco-friendly for a sports car with CO2 emissions of 255g/km and a combined fuel consumption of 26.4mpg. I certainly didn’t want to leave this glacier white, sports convertible and during the almost 1,000 miles I completed in one weekend I had the gorgeous red fabric roof down

most of the time. In this mode, and with side windows in place and a small wind deflector behind the seats, it is possible for a fairly wind free ride. And on the looks side, the mirror in the sun visor is very tiny, but just about big enough to check the lipstick! There is one button that is probably best left untouched unless you’re sampling your F-Type R on a track somewhere – it’s the dynamic launch button. I have only ever used a button such as this once before and it propelled me into a full mile on the track so quickly that I left my stomach at the start line.

FACTS AT A GLANCE: Model: Jaguar F-Type R Convertible Price: £92,285 Engine: 5.0-litre V8 R petrol supercharged Performance: 0-60mph in 4 seconds and on to a top speed of 186mph CO2 emissions: 255g/km Combined fuel consumption: 26.4mpg

LAND SPEED MODEL Talking of high speed… Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations is creating an F-Type R Bloodhound SSC RRV. If you didn’t get the chance to see it at the recent Coventry MotoFest where it was driven by chief engineer Mark Chapman, then sadly you missed out. But it will be the support vehicle for the lucky team when they go to the desert in 2016 for the world land speed record attempt. At a more practical level, F-Type took second place in this year’s Auto Express Driver Power customer satisfaction survey as owners sung the praises of the car’s blistering performance and its handling, seat comfort and ride quality. High praise indeed for what is a highly desirable head-turner! You can follow Sue Cooke on Twitter @cookecars

YOUNG, GIFTED & BRUMMIE

s a lad Tommy Langford was a handy footballer in his native Bideford, but realising he was a bit small for his age, he thought he’d give boxing a whirl to help him bulk up. As you can imagine his parents were none too keen and objected to their boy’s enthusiastic and what they deemed misguided idea. Undeterred, 11-year-old year Tommy sneaked out to the local boxing club and the rest is history as they say. Recently crowned WBO Intercontinental champion, Tommy has his sights set on becoming world champion – and you’d be mad to bet against him. “As a kid I was into boxing straight away and as soon as I joined I was full-time almost,” he said. “I was at the gym every night. I won my first seven fights in three months and I was hooked.” Tommy carried on boxing throughout his teenage years with much success, but at 16 he had some life-changing choices to make. He could either stay in education or get a job and while he was keen to get into employment, his home town wasn’t exactly thriving. “I also knew I wanted to continue boxing, so I had to look at options that allowed me to do that and the best option seemed to be further education.” This is where Tommy’s road to his now-home in Birmingham began. A chance sparring session with Brum’s Frankie Gavin changed him. Tommy explained: “I couldn’t hit him at all. I just couldn’t catch him and I wasn’t used to that.” Tommy quizzed Gavin about where he trained in Hall Green and a plan was hatched. Tommy set his sights on going to the University of Birmingham and worked his socks off to get the A-Level results he needed to achieve it. “The University of Birmingham was the closest uni to the gym, so that was the focus.” Tommy achieved the results, won a sports scholarship too and began a degree in sports science. At this point he had already competed for England and began believing he could reach the Olympic Games. He was taking wins over GB representatives, so his beliefs were realistic. “As an amateur, competing at the Olympics is the pinnacle and I thought it was just a matter of time, but my face didn’t fit and it never happened for me.” Turning professional was the next step and he started

A

september 2015

fighting small hall shows around the UK, winning seven out of seven bouts before he caught the attention of boxing promoter Frank Warren’s ‘spotter’ who set up a meeting that led to the eventual deal. Tommy got a good few wins under his belt, quickly moving up the ranks and into the top 10 WBO fighters before he headed to his most recent fight in Dublin against Julio Cesar Avalos to be crowned WBO Inter Continental Middleweight Champion. Post-fight Tommy says he takes it easy, has a rest for a couple of weeks and spends time with his ‘massively supportive missus’ Leanne. He still works out and keeps an eye on his nutrition and says “it’s more a rest for the mind from the intensity of preparing for a fight.” Compared to his gruelling pre-fight regime it’s a piece of cake. Preparations begin eight weeks before a fight and include two boxing sessions per day including two and a half hours of sparring, bag work and skipping followed by running incorporating a long run and sprint work plus around 90 minutes of strength, all complemented by a highly structured nutrition programme.

Tommy’s hopeful his next fight will be against Billy Joe Saunders in Wolverhampton so he can enjoy the home advantage, although that wasn’t confirmed at the time of writing, but ultimately he’s working towards becoming world champion. “That’s the dream and I believe I can do that more and more.” Mum and dad are more supportive now although mum still can’t look. Tommy recalled: “Dad’s idea of boxing was what he remembered as a kid – no regulations or head guards, so I can understand why he was reluctant. He’s into it now though and comes to watch. Mum still finds it difficult. She’ll come to watch, but it’s not an enjoyable experience for her.” I

FRAME ACADEMY GIRLS TRIUMPH IN THE GREAT TOMATO CHALLENGE Five Year 8 girls from Ark St Alban’s Academy have won an engineering award from Birmingham City University. Held as part of National Women in Engineering Day, the Engineering Challenge was sponsored by Doosan Enpure. It brought together girls from across the region to find out what it means to be an engineer and to hear from women working across all fields of the industry about their careers and experiences. The girls were asked to try and solve a real-life engineering problem – how to help Nepalese tomato growers transport their crop down a steep mountain to market without it being damaged.

TAKES OFF Eight Solihull students received a free bike each after taking part in a six-week course to introduce them to cycle maintenance skills. During the Frame Academy course, students from Grace Academy were given second-hand bikes to maintain which they were then able to take away at the end of the programme. The after-school course which was run by Andy Stowe, Solihull Council’s senior road safety officer, has been introduced in various schools across Birmingham.

How a holiday to the French perfume capital of the world put lawyer Rob Hallmark on the scent of a new fragrance range for men

COMPANY TO WATCH

ob Hallmark likens the decision to quit his job in law to set up his own business as a bit like becoming a dad for the first time. “You think to yourself, everyone’s done it so it’ll be ok. No worries. In fact it’s much harder – a real baptism of fire! But once you’ve started down the path it becomes all-consuming and there’s no turning back.” The 34-year-old former corporate legal eagle decided two years ago to take the plunge and go with a business idea that had been kicking around in his head for the best part of a decade – since holidaying in Grasse, the world’s capital of perfume on the French Riviera. He ploughed in his savings, sold his loft apartment in the Jewellery Quarter and last September, Rob finally realised his goal by launched Gruhme, a range of men’s premier fragrance and personal care products.

R

GAP IN THE MARKET “I was blown away by what I saw in Grasse and thought to myself there has to be a market for a special fragrance range for men,” he explained. “I’d never liked any of the fragrances already out there on the market and I saw a gap for something different.

“I was surrounded at the time by young, self-aware guys but none of us were consumers of major consumer men’s fragrances and personal care products – which I thought was really odd as we were the perfect demographic for those products. So I went for it and thought I’ll give myself two months at the start to see if I could make it work. If not, I’d be looking for a job!” His first task was to thoroughly research the market and do all the nuts and bolts stuff that needs to be done before launching a new business. “I thought to myself that having been a lawyer for eight years in Birmingham and London acting for clients such as Barclays and the Compass Group, nothing would test me. But looking back now, the preparatory work that I did was actually laughable,” he admits. Top of Rob’s wish list was that his new fragrance had to be made in Britain and had to be organic. Not a simple task as Rob explained most of the manufacturers tend to be quite small, cottage industry businesses. He was looking for someone with experience of working with the ‘big boys’ but who was small enough to deliver the ‘personal touch’ that Rob wanted. He eventually found a manufacturer in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire and says immediately on meeting the boss there they struck a real chord together. “My aim was that I always wanted to become a global business and the company at Wellingborough dealt with both big and small companies,” said Rob. “My mission is to become a recognised UK household name and then grow from there – we’ve already had discussions about going to the US, so I needed to know I could upscale things.” MEN AND MOTORS Currently there are two fragrances in the range, Gruhme Original and Gruhme No. 14, which is a 14 per cent blend of the original scent. Rob said he is planning to launch a third fragrance in time for this Christmas. His range, which he describes as “sensual, aromatic and woody” is found in a number of top hotels in Birmingham and London, including Hotel du Vin. He is also stocked in the Business District at gentlemen’s barber, The Barber House, in Colmore Row. Gruhme is also selling really well online through the website, says Rob. Collaborating with premier car brands is a target. Rob has already had a successful tie-up with BMW and at the time of writing he was in discussions for a collaboration with what he would only describe as “a well-known, still independent car maker” in the West Midlands. “Men and motors is a really good synergy for the brand,” he explained. “The upmarket car brands are exactly what we want our image to be associated with.” I

VICTORY FOR WESTSIDE BID

ANITA’S HUNT FOR BRUMMIE OF THE YEAR The Birmingham Awards are being launched to highlight the city’s reputation as a centre of business and enterprise. There are 17 categories including sport, retail, industry and education. One individual will also be presented with the title of Brummie of the Year. Awards founder Anita Chumber said the awards will also be raising money for LoveBrum, the charity which invests in grassroots projects across the city.

Businesses have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Westside Business Improvement District. The 99 per cent ‘Yes’ vote means that the BID will be able to build on the legacy of Broad Street BID which has already boosted the Westside area. The area includes hotels and restaurants such as Hyatt Regency, Pushkar and award-winning Bank, entertainment centres including Birmingham Rep and the International Convention Centre and Library of Birmingham. BID chairman Sam Lawrence said: “The success of the ballot indicates an increasingly positive sign for businesses in Westside.”

visible at night from space – just like the Great Wall of China. What a claim to fame that’d be!

Please introduce yourself I am Paul Faulkner and I became chief executive of Birmingham Chambers of Commerce in July. Previously, I was chief executive of Aston Villa football club. There are actually a lot of similarities with the roles – both are very diverse businesses, dealing with a huge range of different people. And both have a form of membership at their heart – season ticket holders and members at the football club and business members at the Chamber. What is the Chambers’ role? We describe ourselves as a membership-based business support organisation, a kind of central portal or hub to steer businesses towards greater opportunities, development and success.

working together. We need to accentuate these positives. It’s up to all of us to do that because we have a wonderful city. How do you feel your clients see the city? Increasingly positive. People here are very proud of Birmingham and the changes that are happening. People from outside are surprised and very impressed when they come to the city for the first time.

Does Birmingham offer any particular advantages as a destination for business? There’s the obvious one of connectivity, and when HS2 eventually arrives Birmingham will be even more at the hub with 45 million people all being within an hour of the city. We are also a big city with all the benefits that brings, yet we are still small enough to get around and work in very easily.

Is Brum a good place to do business? It’s a great place to do business. We are hearing from more and more What should our priorities be as people who say that the city is at the Birmingham Chambers CEO Paul Faulkner a city? beginning of a great renaissance. After To seize the moment. To embrace a period when the city seemed to lack the confidence to projects such as HS2 and really get behind them. And to promote itself, we are now seeing Birmingham really embrace the young and ethnic diversity of our city. develop. It helps that we are a youthful city and there’s a freshness that comes from that. Also, good decisions that If you had £1bn to spend on improving Brum were taken five or 10 years ago are now starting to come to what would you do with it? fruition. Two things, one serious and one light-hearted! First put it towards smoothing out the inequalities in the city that What are your biggest gripes with it? we all know are there. And for a bit of fun, I’d illuminate We still need to shout more about what is good in Spaghetti Junction so that it’d be visible at night from Birmingham. There are a lot of great partnerships going on space – just like the Great Wall of China. What a claim to here, many of which involve business and the city council fame that’d be! I

IN THE CITY The terracotta buildings of the Business District, the canals of Brindleyplace and the wonderful St Paul’s Square. There’s so much to like here!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I am Suzanne Barnes, founder of interior design consultancy SBDP Ltd which celebrates its 20th anniversary in October. My business is varied and exciting which keeps us fresh. We’ve worked in some fabulous houses and buildings over the years and have been involved in television, teaching and writing about interior design too. You wouldn’t survive long in this industry without commitment, so everybody here really cares. We’re a small business and while at one time architects turned to larger design practices, that’s not the case anymore. HOW DO YOU GET INTO TOWN? We are based in Edgbaston and I live just up the road in Harborne. Because I need my car for site visits and client meetings I drive, although I have been known to walk occasionally!

IS BRUM A GOOD PLACE TO WORK IN? It’s a great city to work in and we’ve managed to ride out two recessions successfully here. Our work is very varied – one of the reasons we’ve survived – so we have many local domestic clients, both homeowners and developers, plus we work for the University of Birmingham and we have designed numerous offices, hotels and restaurants. Everything is on our doorstep which is a huge bonus.

COFFEE BREAK? We have fabulous offices so going offsite for a meeting is rare, however when we do, a short walk round the corner to the Highfield is perfect. LUNCHTIME? If we’re taking clients out to lunch we like to show off our work, so we take them to Opus Restaurant, Opus Bar or Café Opus for which we designed the interiors. The food’s great as well as the interior! If it’s a normal day in the office, we get so engrossed in our work that sometimes we don’t stop. It’s a packed lunch at the desk or we gather in the front studio for a bite to eat and a breather. Occasionally I say sod it and we all head to the Highfield.

Design boss Suzanne Barnes

HOW'S THE COMMUTE? If I leave home before 7.45am or after 9am it’s fairly swift. The business was first based in the Custard Factory and then the Jewellery Quarter before moving to Edgbaston six years ago.

98 birmingham living

Page 98

POWERWALKING? The grounds of the University of Birmingham have a fabulous sculpture trail and I can visit one of my favourite places, the Barber Institute.

WHERE'S YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE CITY? There are so many – from the terracotta buildings of the Business District, the canals of Brindleyplace to the wonderful St Paul’s Square. There’s so much to like. AFTERWORK PINT? I love trying out new bars in the city when they open, and there have been a lot this year. However, I do tend to drink mainly in the Junction pub or the New Inn in Harborne. I do like to have a quick beer with colleagues after work.

HOW CAN THE CITY BE MADE BETTER? Connecting the city would be the main improvement – the trams are coming! Also, to make the pedestrian journey from one side of the city desirable and safe would make a big difference. I
