Make the most of your garden this winter As the nights draw in and days get shorter you may think it’s all over in the garden for this year, however...

T

here is still plenty to do in preparation for the new season. Now is the time to clear away the old and prepare for the new. Ensure you remove aging foliage and vegetation to avoid rot on the ground.

As autumn leaves fall on the dying plants of summer, it’s the perfect time to think about building a compost heap or incorporating a compost converter into your garden. Composting is a great way to turn household scraps and garden waste into nutrient-rich fertiliser. Weeds, leaves, vegetable scraps, cut flowers, and even newspapers and coffee grounds can all be composted. It’s an ideal time to dig over empty beds and work in some fertiliser. This will give your soil a nutrient boost over winter, preparing it for fresh planting in spring.

Romsey The historic market town

Romsey is known for being one of the oldest market towns in Hampshire, as well as having one of the best examples of Norman architecture in history: Romsey Abbey.

T

he market town of Romsey is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in England.

Romsey lies on the River Test, the pure chalk stream that’s famous for its abundance of brown trout. The Test Way is a 44-mile trail that allows you to walk along the banks of the river and enjoy its profusion of wildlife.

Nowadays, the Abbey acts as a parish church for the town with a lively calendar of events, activities, concerts and services held throughout the year. The Abbey is also the last resting place of Lord Louis Mountbatten. As you walk south from Romsey you can see Broadlands, the grand Palladian-style mansion that was once the home of Lord Mountbatten and is now open to the public during summer months.

As the river flows by the town it passes Romsey Abbey, one of the best examples of Norman architecture in Europe. Founded in the 10th-century by Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, it was a Benedictine monastery for nuns that had many royal connections. Opposite the Abbey is King John’s House, the main building of a medieval complex dating back to 1240 – it’s one of England’s oldest surviving dwellings. Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester, built most of the Abbey you see today between 1120 and 1130 though traces of an earlier Saxon church can still be seen.

Romsey lies on the River Test, the pure chalk stream that’s famous for its abundance of brown trout.

Romsey: The historic market town  15

Markets past and present As well as these historical attractions, Romsey is also known for being one of the oldest market towns in Hampshire. King Henry I granted Romsey its first charter. This allowed a market to be held every Sunday and a four-day annual fair each year in May. Today, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets continues this tradition by holding a market in the town on the first Sunday of each month. Romsey’s Alma Road Car Park is transformed on these days as over thirty stallholders take their places to sell an enticing assortment of produce. Visitor numbers can exceed 3500 on a busy day as people flock to buy meat, fish, cheese, bread, cakes, cider and wine. As well as the popular Sunday Farmers’ Market, the Cornmarket holds regular weekly street markets on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. And once a year, the Cornmarket also plays host to the Beggars Fair – a lively one-day festival that has been running since 1993. With the aim of showcasing the best of local talent, Romsey comes alive as folk, jazz, blues and world music, dance displays, and children’s entertainment are performed on streets and venues across the town. It’s a delight to stroll through these streets with their charming shops, restaurants and cafés. The Abbey, King John’s House and the Town Hall are all within five minutes walk of each other. The surrounding charms of the nearby Test River and the New Forest go to make Romsey one of the most attractive towns in Hampshire.

Old Town’s

historic treasures Southampton’s medieval history is still much in evidence today, particularly in the Old Town district of the city.

B

argate, the prestigious entrance to Old Town, is just as striking now as it was when first built. Constructed in the late 12th century as the main gateway to the old walled city, it has seen many additions over the centuries with large towers added around 1290 and new archways in 1764 and 1774. Bargate is an imposing stone and flint structure designed to impress visitors and keep intruders out. However, a recent survey ordered by Southampton City Council has revealed

penetration by rainwater is eroding the stone on the north side. As the extent of the damage is worsening, the council has agreed to spend £250,000 on refurbishing this iconic landmark. Once work is completed, the council will look for a permanent user of the space above the gate. It could again be used as an art gallery or community space, which was its last use until 2012. Before that, the room had many functions, acting as the city’s Guildhall until the 1770s and becoming a prison

after the establishment of Southampton’s police force in 1836. It was actually used as a police headquarters during the Second World War. According to English Heritage, Old Town’s Bargate, City Walls and Tudor House are amongst some of the best-managed historical places in the UK. The organisation praised Southampton City Council for its positive management of the area. Defining the town and giving it character, these significant standing monuments survived the heavy damage suffered by Southampton during the Second World War. Built to defend against land and sea attack, much of the original city wall is still in place making it one of the most complete medieval defence walls in the country. The Tudor House, a timber-framed building constructed in the late 15th century, is now a museum that looks back over 800 years of life in Southampton. Accessible from the Tudor House Garden is King John’s Palace, which dates back a further 300 years and is one of the finest surviving examples of Norman architecture in the country.

emarkably, Old Town still contains over 90 listed buildings and more than 30 monuments, which can be found nestling between modern cafés and bars. The Merchant’s House is a hidden gem tucked away on French Street. Now in the care of English Heritage, it has been lovingly restored to its mid 14th-century appearance.

R

Nowadays, local commercial activity takes place at Ocean Village Marina with its restaurants, cinemas, and sailing facilities, or at nearby West Quay Shopping Centre.

The Merchant’s House, once the trading centre of the city, is just one of the historical treasures that make Old Town such a joy to explore.

Period buildings and statues throughout Old Town tell the story of Southampton’s nautical history. The Grade II listed South Western House now comprises of apartments offering stunning views across the water and city. Formerly known as the South Western Hotel, it was used by passengers travelling on the great liners including the Titanic.

f course, West End is mainly known for the Ageas Bowl, home to the famous Hampshire Cricket Club. The venue has a hotel that offers event and conference facilities, and spectacular views of the cricket ground and a new 18-hole golf course.

However, there’s more to West End than just a cricket pitch. The village was originally a hamlet that grew up around a track between Romsey and Portsmouth; it has a history dating back to medieval times. Since the Bronze Age, there have been settlements here. The main development of West End took place in the 19th century, and it still contains period architecture such as Moorgreen Hospital, a classic Victorian building. In the centre of the village, the Old Fire Station has been converted into a museum and houses a growing archive of local material. The parish is now situated within the borough of Eastleigh, and our branch covers not only West End, but also the surrounding towns and villages of Botley, Horton Heath, Bitterne, Hedge End, Bursledon and the Meon Valley.

What’s happening in Hampshire this winter?

Winter Twig Display, Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey 13–14 December When everything in the garden is bare, the winter twig display showcases the striking colours of the season. Scented flowers on exposed stems and flaky bark change the dullest garden into a magical place; early bulbs also feature and will be on display in Jermyn’s House. Visitors can pop into the beautifully decorated Jermyn’s House Tea Rooms and enjoy a delicious selection of cakes. From 1 December, you can indulge in special Festive Afternoon Teas served between 2.30pm and 4.00pm every day on the run up to Christmas. An exquisite cake stand, filled with delicate bites and seasonal favourites, is accompanied by your choice of tea, or optional extras such as champagne, Pimms or mulled wine. From Monday 1 to Tuesday 23 December, Jermyn’s House menu will also feature a two or three-course festive lunch, served from 12 noon to 3.30pm.

Fareham’s Big Christmas Weekend, 29–30 November On Saturday 29 November from 9am to 5pm, the town will host an Art & Design Fayre. This event is new to Fareham and will feature the best of regional and local original art and craft. Hosted by The Breeze 107, Fareham’s annual Switch on the Lights event will start at 11am on Sunday 30 November. There will be a traditional funfair and entertainment from local community performance groups including the Military Wives Choir. The lights will be switched on at 4.30pm and followed by a firework display.

Winter Walks, New Forest The spectacular natural scenery of the New Forest is breathtaking in winter, making it the perfect destination for walkers and photographers. With 193,000 acres of ancient woodland to explore, you can witness the colourful shades of autumn trees as they transform into the bare frostcovered branches of winter. The New Forest has expanses of open heathland and forests of deciduous trees alongside streams and coastlines. There are around 143 miles of tracks for walking and cycling that take you through a variety of landscapes. Fortunately, there are also plenty of car parks along all New Forest walking routes, so you can make your walk as long or short as you wish.

Cinderella, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, 13 December 2014 – 4 January 2015 Experience pantomime magic in an exciting show full of dazzling dance routines, catchy songs and spectacular sets. Comedian, television presenter and musical theatre star Brian Conley takes to the Mayflower stage as Buttons. He’s joined by fashion expert and television presenter Gok Wan, who as The Fairy Gokmother offers helpful style tips to The Ugly Sisters and creates the most lavish ball gown in pantoland.

You can understand the attraction of Southsea with its historic battlements and naval traditions, overlooking The Solent towards the Isle of Wight. Regular markets take place, and the main shopping area offers an interesting blend of independent traders, intermingled with cafés and restaurants. There are several private schools within easy walking distance. The property market this year has seen a surge in activity, which has obviously been reflected in higher prices. The demand is across all ranges and the quality of buyers out viewing has been exceptionally high, many of which are able to make instant decision with no lengthy chains. This year has been our best since the peak of 2007 and we anticipate this continuing on into 2015. 10 TIPS For valuation and viewings An estate agent valuing your property has the experience to look beyond the superficial to see the worth of your home. They’ll soon tell you if there are easy to fix issues that would make your house more appealing in the eyes of potential buyers.

W

e all have different tastes and styles when it comes to decorating our homes. Therefore, when it’s time to market your property, there’s probably no point in making dramatic changes, as choices in décor or layout will always be subjective. Nevertheless, if there are straightforward steps you can take that will broaden the appeal of your house, it may be worth considering them. Jeremy Beckingsale gives his top ten tips on how to show your home to its best advantage to viewers.

1

Exteriors: first impressions count

Take an objective look at the outside of your property and if it’s looking a little run down, evaluate the extent of work needed to smarten it up. Simple jobs like cleaning fascia boards or applying a quick lick of paint to flaky woodwork can give exteriors an instant facelift.

Top 10 tips for valuation and viewings  67

2

Garden makeover

8

We’re not talking about major landscaping, just taming overgrown areas. Mowing the lawn and pulling up weeds from paving won’t take long and can make a world of difference.

3

4

Ensure rooms smell fresh

Strong cooking odours or lingering pet smells can be off-putting. Open windows to allow fresh air to circulate and install discreet air fresheners.

5

Open up the view

Moving unused items of furniture can open up a room and make it look more spacious. If an area is too crowded viewers may struggle to appreciate the true dimensions of a room.

7

9

Leave the building

Your home is, of course, personal to you, and sometimes this can make prospective buyers feel awkward. They may refrain from too much discussion in front of you, but not feel the same restraint with an impartial agent. They are likely to spend longer viewing and ask more questions (giving the agent the opportunity to respond to any concerns) if you’re not there.

10

Trust your estate agent

Experienced estate agents know what they’re doing. They will have sold numerous properties in the past, so why not trust them to sell your house rather than trying to do it yourself.

Clear clutter

Potential buyers will expect to see the usual ornaments and knickknacks. However, too much clutter can be a distraction. A clear out of unwanted items will not only make space it will save time when you come to move.

6

If a room is a little dark give the impression of brightness by using higher wattage light bulbs. Or paint the walls in pale colours and add mirrors to provide reflected light.

Remove obstacles

It’s best not to make your prospective buyer jump over hurdles. This may mean moving children’s play things, pets’ toys and baskets, bicycles or sports items.

Brighten a dull room

Let in light

Maximise the amount of natural light coming into your house by making sure all curtains and blinds are fully open. Cut back overgrown trees or shrubs if they obscure light.

Thinking of selling your home? Pearsons offer free and impartial advice and valuations – arming you with the information you need to make that big decision. So if you’re considering moving, why not give them a call and have a no obligation chat.

Christmas at Winchester Cathedral Winchester’s magnificent Cathedral welcomes 300,000 visitors throughout the year and has been a place of worship for centuries.

T

On Friday 21 November, from 6pm to 9pm in the Cathedral Outer Close, you can listen to live music from a seven-piece jazz ensemble, take part in a lantern procession and watch an exciting pyrotechnic display.

Skate under the stars For just five weeks over the Christmas period, the Inner Close is transformed into an open-air ice rink. The Cathedral provides a stunning backdrop for skaters, who

can take to the ice for one-hour sessions during the day and evening. The ice rink can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, and trained ice stewards are on hand to ensure the rink is safe and well maintained at all times.

The Cathedral’s Christmas Services The Cathedral holds a large number of Christmas services every year. These range from Advent carols, public carols and children’s nativity events to Midnight Eucharist and Christmas Day services. The walls of the Cathedral have echoed with music for almost a thousand years, and this tradition continues today. Daily services include choral music by the great composers sung in the unique English style.

It’s the place to visit if you’re looking for unique Christmas gifts and handmade decorations. A profusion of festive food and drink can also be purchased, with old favourites such as mulled wine, mince pies and stollen.

Why choose an ARLA registered letting agent? Yasmine Knight, Lettings Manager at Pearsons Romsey, explains why official accreditation is so important for lettings agencies.

Y

asmine Knight, Lettings Manager at Pearsons in Romsey, has firsthand experience of the complexities of the lettings market and in her view it’s vital for agents to recognise the value of governance by a regulatory body. “In my role, I not only need to be able to advise landlords of changes in legislation, I’m also required to answer any questions prospective tenants may have regarding the many types of tenancy agreements. Lettings is an incredibly multifaceted profession and anyone working in this field needs to continually stay abreast of developments within the industry.”

Unbeatable expertise Membership of ARLA is through the Technical Award in Residential Letting and Property Management qualification. Divided into four modules, this is a regulated qualification for candidates wanting to improve their existing knowledge in key areas relating to residential letting and property management. Yasmine is currently sitting her exams and hopes to qualify early next year. The benefit of this extensive training is clear as the expertise gained provides a competitive advantage. As Yasmine explains, “This qualification will stand you in good

stead when dealing with the wide range of situations that can arise in the course of your work. It gives you a professionalism and credibility that non-accredited lettings agencies lack.”

Setting industry standards ARLA is committed to raising standards in letting and property management through qualifications and training. To support and complement its qualification programme, the organisation also offers a range of specialist short courses for its members. As well as providing help and guidance for specialists across a spectrum of disciplines, it campaigns to make the UK property market more efficient and user-friendly for the home buying and selling public. ARLA encourages its members to differentiate themselves by upholding high professional standards.

ARLA The Association of Residential Letting Agents ARLA is committed to raising standards within the fields of letting and property management. Formed in 1981, ARLA is the UK’s foremost professional and regulatory body for letting agents. The organisation recognises that the specific and detailed needs of the residential lettings market requires an association to promote standards in this growing sector of the property industry. All its members must adhere to high standards of professional conduct.
