voluntary experience to support your university application “I am doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award, because I am hoping to go to one of the UK’s top 20 universities and the experiences that I’ve gained will help me become the well-rounded individual that they are looking for. I’ve really enjoyed being involved in the Itchen Student Union, improving my tennis, founding a chess club and going on a three-day orienteering expedition in the New Forest.” Shi Xing (Tom), China
“During my first year, Itchen found me voluntary experience lambing at a farm because I wanted to study veterinary science at university and this would strengthen my application. I learned about the general care and management of sheep and got hands-on-experience. I helped with feeding, clearing pens, lambing and caring for sick and new-born lambs. The family at the farm were incredibly warm and welcoming and made me feel at home. The team at Itchen have really gone out of their way to help and support me in everything that they can.” Maria Alejandra Silva Gallanti, Venezuela

“Itchen helped me prepare for my university studies throughout the whole learning process. I am very grateful for the advice I got from my teachers about my university and career choices as well as preparing me so well for the exams. I met so many lovely teachers, who were kind and humorous and I still keep in touch with my friends who I believe will be friends for life.”
“If I were to talk to someone about where they should study their A Levels, I would recommend Itchen. I felt good, the teaching was great, and I felt prepared for university. Tim Riggs (my photography teacher) gave me the right advice on which path to take for my future career. IELTS preparation programmes (6 months)
IELTS preparation programmes (6 months) For students who wish to improve their English, in British Council-approved classes. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is an English language assessment required for college and university entry as well as for visa purposes. Our teachers are highly-experienced in preparing students to succeed at each of the four elements of the IELTS exam and a number of our teachers are IELTS examiners. All candidates are scored on a band scale of 0 to 9 and generally, a score greater than 6.0 is required for university entry.
Speaking
Reading
Students practise, individually and in pairs, the topics commonly used in the exam, such as asking for information, talking about themselves and expressing their ideas in a variety of situations. Checklists of examiner expectations help them, both in class and out of it, even at home, and mock exams and feedback ensure thorough preparation for the real thing.
Students are taught strategies to quickly find important information from a variety of sources, which will help them answer the IELTS reading questions. Plenty of in-class practice, along with use of self-study material, helps them develop confidence and familiarises them with this part of the exam.
Listening
Students are thoroughly prepared for both writing tasks in the IELTS exam, by being taught correct essay structure, academic vocabulary, complex grammatical structures and how to answer the questions relevantly. Mock exam questions and thorough feedback, plus peer-marking activities, all help in familiarising students with the exam criteria. Teachers also use their own authentic material on currently topical news items, reinforced by quizzes, discussions and essays.
Students learn the necessary skills to understand English in everyday and more formal situations, preparing them for the listening component of the exam, and can practise using self-study materials and CDs provided by College. Regular testing is used to track their progress, including vocabulary and spelling.
