PROSPECTUS 2018-19
BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME The first questions you will be asked when you come to Richard Taunton are: What do you want to get from your time here? Where do you want college to take you? What are your personal and career aspirations? You will find that our ‘begin with the end in mind’ approach will underpin everything we do to support, motivate and develop you. So, what is college for? First and foremost, it is about getting the qualifications you need to open the doors to the next phase of your life. High quality teaching and learning, positive working relationships with your teachers, and high levels of effort and application will bring success. Of equal importance is your personal and professional development. By the time you move on you will understand yourself better, be more confident and independent, have gained experience in the workplace and understand what employers are looking for. How will you achieve this? We will offer you a wide range of courses and enrichment opportunities, so that we can tailor a programme to suit your needs. We will provide dedicated individual support and attention alongside high quality teaching and learning, great careers education, stretch and challenge tasks for the gifted and talented, specialist learning support, as well as welfare and advice services. The positive progression our students make from college into the next stage of their education and chosen career is outstanding. I am very proud to say that in 2016, 97.5% of our students progressed to university, employment, training or further education. It is so important to make the right choice of college. Why not come along to one of our Open Evenings and Taster Days to find out if we are the right place for you. We all look forward to meeting you!

STUDENT DAY IN THE LIFE STORIES
Year one student, Lorna Cotter (previously at Hounsdown School), talks about college life… I take three subjects so that works out at two lessons per day, each lasting one and a half hours. That leaves me with two study periods so I usually head to the library where I make use of the computers and printers. I bring in a packed lunch most days but sometimes enjoy smoothies, paninis and the odd cake from Costa. The café also serves hot food and if you are ever short of cash don’t worry, there’s a cash machine too! You can get involved in lots of extra-curricular activities at college, in fact it is actively encouraged as this helps build your skills and gives you the chance to meet new people. I decided to join the Student Union and am also part of the Sixth Form Academy. The Academy runs an Academy Challenge Enrichment Programme (ACE) programme, which is an extra lesson a week and offers lots of bespoke opportunities such as university trips and the Extended Project Qualification. I was asked what advice I would give to a new student…I’d say that when you start make sure you arrive at least ten minutes early so you can get your bearings around college (I got lost at least once my first week!) and remember everyone is just as anxious as you so try and break the ice and everything will be great!
The Independent Learning Centre (ILC) is also a great place to study as is the café (outside of break and lunchtime of course!).
18
STUDENT DAY IN THE LIFE STORIES
Year two student, Maddie Hook (previously at Crestwood College), talks about her typical day at college… “My bus arrives at college at 8.10am each day. I tend to go straight to the café and sit with my friends, using the time to make sure I’m up to speed on homework. I then make my way to my first lesson of the day, which starts at 8.30am. The structure of lessons varies depending on the subject, qualification and level of study. I am taking two Art courses and History at A Level so I could be doing a group mind map exercise in one class, personal note taking from a book in another, having a group discussion or completing project work. There’s a 20 minute break in the morning and an hour at lunch, when I usually hang out with friends in the café, courtyards or in the grounds. At the end of the day, around 4pm, I head home on the bus and then make a start on any outstanding homework.
The teachers are really supportive and always on hand to give feedback and provide extra help and advice outside of lessons.

GET INVOLVED IN SHAPING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE THERE ARE MANY WAYS THAT YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN SHAPING COLLEGE LIFE AND REPRESENTING THE COLLEGE. HERE ARE JUST A FEW‌ STUDENT UNION Members of the Student Union get involved in a variety of activities from sharing the views of the student body with the college management team, organising charity and social events and getting involved in student wellbeing initiatives to keeping students up-to-date on what’s happening around college. Members also have the opportunity to become a college student governor.
STUDENT AMBASSADORS We are always looking for students to represent the college at events such as Open Evenings, Welcome Evenings, Taster Days and visits to local schools. Each ambassador receives training and can put these new skills into practice throughout the year. Being an Ambassador really helps to build your confidence, particularly when it comes to public speaking, and looks great on your UCAS application and CV!
TUTOR REPS We encourage students to become more involved with college life from the start of their courses. Becoming a tutor rep means that you will meet regularly to represent the views of students within your tutor group on the curriculum and student life in general.
STUDENT VOICE FEEDBACK SURVEY All students are encouraged to complete this survey twice a year. It is an online independent survey, which is benchmarked against 100 other colleges in the country. We consistently score highly in almost every area, from teaching and assessment to feedback and progress, and rank in the top quartile nationally.

WIDENING PARTICIPATION ACADEMY We want every one of our students to have the chance to achieve their dreams and aspirations whether this be through securing a place at university or completing a higher apprenticeship. Therefore, we have set up a pioneering programme to help our students do just that! We recognise that not all students have had the same opportunities when they first join the college. Many face social, financial or academic barriers which make them less likely to reach higher education. We want this to change. Students who qualify for membership of this academy, will: ▶▶ ▶▶ ▶▶ ▶▶
Be matched with an external mentor Receive more than 75 hours of direct support throughout their two years at college Learn to identify their strengths and how to use them to secure a rewarding future Take part in an inspirational programme of: ▶▶ Lectures by PhD students, leading industry specialists and people who can share their inspirational career path ▶▶ Visits to local major employers such as University Hospital Southampton and IBM ▶▶ Work experience and volunteering ▶▶ University visits.
OUR ACADEMIES
SPORTS ACADEMY If you are a talented sports person you can apply for a place in our Sports Academy programme. It offers fantastic opportunities to work with specialist coaches, complete additional qualifications, compete on a weekly basis against other colleges at country/regional/ national level, and apply for scholarship opportunities at the top universities. Members may also have the opportunity to visit other sporting facilities, such as St Mary’s Stadium and the Saint’s training ground, to broaden their experience. Students who are accepted into the Sports Academy are high-level performers in one or more of the following sports: basketball, cricket, rugby, trampolining, football, netball and boxing. We can also support students in a number of other disciplines such as athletics, swimming and more. You do not have to study a sports qualification to join the Sports Academy. 75
