I was encouraged and supported by my teacher to apply for a place on a classics course; part of the University of Oxford’s summ er school programme. With only 20 places on offer, competition was fierce. Thanks to the help and guidance I received at college, I managed to secure a place. To say I’m ecstatic is an understatement! This is not only a great experience but it will look fantastic on my UCAS application and CV.

COLLEGE LIFE THERE ARE MANY WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN SHAPING COLLEGE LIFE AND REPRESENTING THE COLLEGE. HERE ARE JUST A FEW‌ STUDENT UNION Members of the Student Union get involved in a variety of activities from sharing the views of the student body with the college management team, organising charity and social events and supporting student wellbeing initiatives to keeping students up-to-date on what’s happening around college. Members also have the opportunity to become a college student governor.
STUDENT AMBASSADORS We are always looking for students to represent the college at events such as Open Evenings, Welcome Evenings, Taster Days and visits to local schools. Each ambassador receives training and can put these new skills into practice throughout the year. Being an Ambassador really helps to build your confidence, particularly when it comes to public speaking, and looks great on your UCAS application and CV!
TUTOR REPS We encourage students to become more involved with college life from the start of their courses. Becoming a Tutor Rep means that you will meet regularly to discuss and represent the views of students within your tutor group, on the curriculum and student life in general.
STUDENT VOICE FEEDBACK SURVEY All students are encouraged to complete this survey twice a year. It is an online independent survey, which is benchmarked against 100 other colleges in the country. We consistently score highly in almost every area, from teaching and learning to feedback and progress, and rank in the top quartile nationally.

LET ME TALK YOU THROUGH MY DAY TODAY… It started with a 20 minute bus journey to college. I usually arrive early so I can catch up with my friends before lessons. In my performing arts lesson I learnt how to properly warm up my voice and was taught techniques and theory to help improve my sound and performance skills. 16
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A STUDENT
At break time I headed to the café to chat to my friends and enjoy a hot chocolate from Costa (my favourite!) and a tasty flapjack.
Next up was an Accelerate Programme session (for those wanting to go to the top universities). I was given advice on choosing the right university course and spent some time working on my extended project qualification (EPQ), which is equivalent to half an A Level and highly regarded by universities. The EPQ is of a similar standard to university projects, so it gives me a good taste of what is to come! Then it was time for lunch, where I got to chill with my friends for an hour and grab some hot food; today it was chicken korma. The food is pretty good here and very reasonably priced!
Period three was a study period, so I headed to the library to do some homework and to revise for my upcoming exams.
My final lesson of the day was sociology, one of my favourite subjects, where we had a debate on educational policies.
Once the clock strikes 3.55pm I am out of my seat and back on the bus home to get started on homework.
I hope this has helped you to visualise a typical day at college. To find out more, why not check out our ‘Day in the Life’ video on our YouTube channel (Richard Taunton Sixth Form College) 17

MY WORK EXPERIENCE AT SOUTHAMPTON CITY COUNCIL VALERIA BRAICAU
Valeria was previously studying at school overseas.
THE COUNCIL’S OBJECTIVES 1. 2. 3. 4.
Southampton is a city with strong and sustainable economic growth Children and young people in Southampton get a good start in life People in Southampton live safe, healthy and independent lives Southampton is a modern attractive city where people are proud to live and work.
LEARNINGS FROM THE INTELLIGENCE & STRATEGY ANALYSIS DEPARTMENT
LEARNINGS FROM THE POLICY & STRATEGIC PLANNING DEPARTMENT
This department deals with the collection and analysis of data. I learned, while discussing how data analysis helps the council, that a lot of data collection sources need to be verified. To save time and resources, they use a technical tool to verify their data. I had the opportunity to examine some of the statistical data outputs, which were about to be made public.
This department sets out governmental policies and also re-evaluates what the government sets out as laws or policies, to make sure they align with the council’s objectives. I attended meetings about homelessness and adult social care. I learnt how to make a point diplomatically and saw how parties with conflicting views managed to reach a consensus.
LEARNINGS FROM THE EMPLOYMENT DEPARTMENT
SKILLS I WITNESSED
This department sets the rules for Southampton based businesses on the number of training opportunities or apprenticeships that they must offer to the unemployed. I attended a meeting between the Employment Officer and a construction business owner who had to produce a report on the number and profile of unemployed people that he had engaged to work for him. 24

WORK RELATED LEARNING
MY WORK EXPERIENCE AT NORTH HOUSE HOTEL, IOW OLIVIA PAYNE
Olivia was previously at Cowes Enterprise College.
CARRYING OUT WORK EXPERIENCE AT NORTH HOUSE, HAS ALLOWED ME TO SEE THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT OF THE SECTOR I WANT TO GO INTO. LOGISTICS & PLANNING
COMMUNICATION & PROFESSIONALISM
Lots of logistical planning is involved with weddings, from timings to flowers and guests!
Sitting in wedding meetings with customers gave me a better understanding of communication and professionalism. You have to talk to the customer in a professional manner, as they are paying a lot to hold their wedding there.
PROBLEM SOLVING & INDEPENDENCE When answering phone calls on reception I learnt to adapt my style to the customer and manage any problems or questions they had.
ORGANISATION Being organised is key, and I built on this skill by creating a daily to-do list to make sure that I didn’t miss anything.
TECHNOLOGY The hotel uses several programmes to check in guests, order products and manage stock. I realised that having strong technical skills is essential for the workplace.
BUSINESS RESEARCH
BUSINESS INSIGHT I shadowed the operations manager, which gave me experience of admin, human resources and finance. She dealt with lots of different issues and made decisions across all of these areas from budgeting for a wedding to finding replacements for light fittings. It also gave me real insight into the business and the industry.
ADMINISTRATION I shadowed the receptionist and closely watched the restaurant service process. I also contributed to the administration of events such as bonfire night, by preparing tickets.
For my next placement I will make sure that I research the business in advance. This will help me to get to know the place better and work to my full potential.
25
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES We actively encourage you to get involved in a number of extra-curricular college activities to help you build your skills set, provide you with new experiences and give you the chance to meet people with similar interests. Our timetable is deliberately designed to enable you to take part in these activities. Here’s a just a few examples of what will be available to you…
ACTIVE: ▶▶ Badminton ▶▶ Boxing ▶▶ Gym
▶▶ Table tennis ▶▶ Volleyball.
At boxing I learnt all about self-control and respect. It also taught me to persevere through tougher times when the workouts were difficult and I was struggling. I really enjoy it as I wouldn’t have got into boxing if it wasn’t available at the college. 26

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: ▶▶ ▶▶ ▶▶ ▶▶ ▶▶ ▶▶ ▶▶
Board games club British sign language club Christian Union Duke of Edinburgh Award LGBT club Student Ambassador group Student Union.
I really enjoyed doing the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. I built up my volunteering hours by coaching and managing a youth football team. I even picked up a coaching qualification along the way! The expedition was also great fun. A group of us also planned a camping trip to the Brecon Beacons, which was challenging but gave us all a great sense of achievement. Our group really bonded and I’ve made for life. Tom Grant (previously at Chamberlayne College of the Arts)

In fact, we strongly recommend that you keep your options open and apply to a number of colleges. However, if you are looking for a successful and slightly smaller college, with a caring and close knit community, then look no further! Q. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I DON’T KNOW WHAT COURSES TO TAKE? A. When completing the application form, apply for courses that interest you. At your pre-enrolment interview we’ll discuss your course options in more detail and provide you with lots help and guidance. You can then try out various subjects on Transition Day. Q. WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT THE COURSES I HAVE APPLIED FOR? A. That’s no problem! Your course choices are not finalised until enrolment, which takes place in August, after you have received your GCSE results. Q. CAN I TRY OUT SOME COURSES? A. Yes you can. You’ll be invited to Transition Day at the start of July where you can try out a number of subjects and get a feel for what is right for you. If you are currently in Year 10, you can attend a Taster Day in July, organised through your school. Q. HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK WILL I SPEND IN LESSONS? A. You will spend a minimum of 14 hours a week in lessons. You also need to factor in time for prep and enrichment activities. You are then expected to spend the same amount of time on independent study, outside of your lessons.
