RELAX AND ENJOY THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT COME WITH LIVING HERE Andover was once one of the main stagecoach stopping points on the old Exeter to London route, and many of the town’s lovely 18th century buildings date from that affluent period in the town’s history. It’s an equally pleasant place to spend time today, and you’ll find plenty to interest you within a few miles of The Lawns. To start with there’s the Rosebourne Garden Centre on Amesbury Road, where you can enjoy afternoon tea in the restaurant and buy local produce in the food hall. If you are interested in live entertainment The Lights theatre and arts venue hosts a busy programme of theatre, comedy and dance. If you’re feeling energetic, Andover Leisure Centre has a state of the art gym and a 25 metre swimming pool along with squash courts and a spa area and, from early 2017, the town will also boast a new ten-pin bowling alley (Riverside Bowl) and American style diner. If you enjoy a round of golf you could join the Andover Golf Club, just half a mile south of the town centre. And for a spot of retail therapy you’ll find 60 shops on one level at the Chantry Centre shopping mall, including Argos, Boots and Waitrose. Heading further afield there are plenty of family attractions in the vicinity, including the Charlton Lakeside outdoor centre, Finkley Down Farm Park and the Hawk Conservancy Trust. Or for a grown-up day out, you could take a tour (while sampling the delights) of the Bombay Sapphire distillery at Whitchurch.
Andover’s rich heritage is celebrated in the mosaicpanelled Time Ring (on the high street) and along two poetry trails that feature poems etched into metal, stone and glass plaques.
