‘Going Faux’ can transform a home’s style By DIANA MARSZALEK The Associated Press
HOME
Phoebe Taylor’s 20-year-old suburban Atlanta ranch house began plain and “builder grade. A professional decorator, she transformed it with faux wood beams, decorative molding and a gold-spun paint job that looked like “soft marble. Her vision: “what our dream house would have been if we had gone out and bought it. It’s called “Going Faux – turning homes into something they basically are not through prefab architectural embellishments and eye-tricking wall finishes. Enthusiasts say there’s no reason for even the most budget-conscious among us to live a cookie-cutter existence. “My house was not an expensive house. But even the million dollar houses don’t have this kind of detail, says Taylor, adding that she recently sold the house in just one day. Other “faux features to consider include ceiling decals that look like parts of elaborate chandeliers, cabinetry embellishments and painted wainscoting. “I have seen some trailer homes that have more personality to them thanks to paint, sweat equity, buying some lumber, and their owners using their creativity, says Lee Gamble, a Steamboat Springs, Colo.-based designer and painter who specializes in faux finishes. Gamble says a homeowner can change anything with desire and patience – even ambitious projects like, say, making the interior of a standard subdivision home look like a cozy Tudor or classic Colonial, or like something out of the rustic West. The Internet is a DIY decorator’s best friend, she says, offering inspiration and sources for add-
ing architectural and decorative elements to a home. Next is paint, which Gamble calls “the cheapest way to improve your houseâ€? – and it’s about more than just giving the walls new color. Paint can be used to create illusions of architectural elements: For example, you can use blocks of color on walls to create the look of molding, or three variations of one color for a three-dimensional look – an old technique called trompe l’oeil that can make your home look just a little more like the Palace of Versailles. Paint can make high ceilings look lower – extend the ceiling’s color to a lower point on the wall – or give them more height by going dark. Using different colors on the top and bottom halves of a wall can create the look of wainscot, Gamble says. Ornamental appliquĂŠs that adhere to anything from cabinetry, walls, mantels and molding to furniture and picture frames add ready-made detail without breaking the bank, she says. The decorative appliquĂŠs, which can be painted, stained or glazed, are particularly helpful in transforming the look of kitchen cabinets. “If they are in good shape and the flow works for you, then there is no reason to change them out,â€? Gamble says, adding that the appliquĂŠs, paint and new cabinetry hardware can transform a “builder-grade kitchenâ€? to any style from classic to contemporary. “Suddenly you have a new kitchen,â€? she says. The products that make such projects possible are becoming easier to use, home designers
This undated photo released by Fypon shows the architectural detail Atlanta-area resident Phoebe Taylor added to enhance her master bathroom. says. The manufacturer Fypon, for example, makes synthetic ceiling beams and medallions and decorative millwork that are lighter and more manageable than real wood, Gamble says. Decorative millwork like, say, a sunburst pediment over a door, is an easy improvement to a room, says Kathleen Ziprik, a Fypon spokeswoman. Taylor says she used tricks like that in her renovation. In redoing her master bath, for example, she started with “just a straight shot bathroom. She added molding

and wood panels to the walls, and framed the bathtub, using new material with decorative embellishments. “It looked very dramatic,
Taylor says, adding that buying a new home with those real architectural features would not have been affordable. “It really looked real, she says.

How to stop wildlife from eating your garden Melinda Myers Gardening Expert
garden
There’s no doubt that managing critters in the landscape can be a challenge especially as food supplies start to dwindle. If you are battling with rabbits, deer, groundhogs or other wildlife, don’t let down your guard as the growing season begins to wind down. O Be proactive. Start before they get into the habit of dining on your landscape. It is easier to keep them away than break the dining habit. O Fence them out. Fencing is the best defense against most wildlife. A four feet tall fence around a small garden will keep out rabbits. Secure the bottom tight to the ground or bury it several inches to prevent rabbits and voles from crawling underneath. Or fold the bottom of the fence outward, making sure it’s tight to the ground. Animals tend not to crawl under when the bottom skirt faces away from the garden.
Go deeper, at least 12 to 18 inches, if you are trying to discourage woodchucks. Many hungry animals have found their way into the garden through openings around and under the gate. A five foot fence around small garden areas can help safeguard your plantings against hungry deer. Some gardeners report success surrounding their garden with fishing line mounted on posts at one and three foot heights. O Break out the repellents. Homemade and commercial repellents can be used. Apply before the animals start feeding and reapply as directed. Consider using a natural product like Messina’s Animal Stopper (www.Messinas.com). It is made of herbs, safe to use and smells good. O Scare ‘em away. Blow up owls, clanging pans, rubber
snakes, slivers of deodorant soap, handfuls of human hair and noise makers are scare tactics that have been used by gardeners for years. Consider your environment when selecting a tactic. Alternate scare tactics for more effective control. O Combine tactics. Use a mix of fencing, scare tactics and repellents. Keep monitoring for damage. If there are enough animals and they are hungry, they will eat just about anything. O Don’t forget about nature. Welcome hawks and fox into your landscape. Using less pesticides and tolerating some critters, their food source, will encourage them to visit your yard. These natural pest controllers help keep the garden-munching critters under control. And most importantly, don’t give up. A bit of persistence, variety and adaptability is the key to success. Investing some time now will not only deter existing critters from dining in your landscape, but will also reduce the risk of animals moving in next season.

Leasing solar is a cost-saving option summer sun is about equal to the annual U.S. electricity demand, the Energy Department says in its SunShot Vision Study. “Saving money and being energy efficient rank really high with consumers today, said Kit Selzer, a senior editor at Better Homes and Gardens. A Gallup poll in March found that 76 percent of Americans thought the country should put more emphasis on producing domestic energy from solar power. So what’s stopping more folks from going solar? “We found that a lot of people were afraid to go solar because they were too afraid of what they didn’t know, said Ketch Ryan, who had a solar energy system installed in her Chevy Chase, Md., house several years ago. To help neighbors, Ryan and Kirk Renaud founded a cooperative, Common Cents Solar, “to make sure we didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. We can do it together and we can do it more
By CAROLE FELDMAN The Associated Press
Ben Kunz wanted to do “the green thing and save on his electric bill without paying a lot of money up front. So instead of buying a solar system for his house in Cheshire, Conn., he leased one. “I thought it was a pretty good deal, he said. “I lean a little environmentalist so I’m concerned about global warming. Increasing numbers of U.S. homeowners are relying on the sun to meet much of their hot water and electricity needs. In fact, residential electricity produced by solar in the first quarter of 2013 was almost 10 times higher than that generated in 2008, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. But the potential for more is huge. Consider this: “The amount of solar energy falling on the United States in one hour of noontime
efficiently. The first thing is to get your roof assessed to see whether it’s viable for solar. The roof’s condition, material and angle are among the considerations. One misconception is that you need a south-facing roof. While south is optimal, solar can be stalled on roofs facing east and west, too. “Walk outside on a sunny day and look at the roof, advises Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association. Is the roof covered with shade? If not, your house may be a good candidate for solar. Some solar companies use Google maps for a first look before sending out staff for a fuller assessment. Homeowners also worry that solar may not be viable in northern states. California leads the nation in the capacity of installed residential solar units, with Arizona a distant second. But New Jersey comes in at No. 3 and Mas-
