Welcome

ADVERTISING INDEX

In October of 2013, when we were finalizing plans for our 2014 special section calendar at the Telegram, we were excited about a new magazine we would publish during the first quarter. Today, we’re publishing our second edition of the magazine and are grateful for the continued support from the business community. Again this year, as we began to interview these business people we recognized that each and every one of them has a unique story to tell. They’ve all gotten to where they are today through a combination of hard work, creativity and perseverance. To each, success may have a similar definition, but its achievement has been realized through a myriad of strategies and approaches. Our thanks to the area business professionals who permitted a glimpse into their work lives and to our project writers who did such a wonderful job capturing these varied stories. Linda Noel and Bill Stancil each devoted much of the schedules to these stories over the past several weeks, and their effort is a major factor for the excitement we hold for this special section. Finally, project editor and designer Jeanne Brown displayed her usual flair and devotion to produce a top-notch publication we can all be proud of. I hope these profiles give you some insight into the dedication of the people who make up this region’s business community and that you’ll enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. Rocky Mount Family Medical Center was established in 1983 by Dr. Richard Michal. After having interviewed at several other established practices, he decided to open his own practice so that he would have control over the Christian environment that he wanted to establish and to be able to pray with his patients. In 1994, Dr. Mark Abel joined the practice and became half owner. Today the practice has eleven Board Certified providers and a support staff of over fifty, offering complete family care, women’s health care and a coagulation clinic. Patients needing immediate attention can be seen by anyone in the practice the same day they call. “Being run by Christians does not mean that you have to be a Christian to either be a patient here or work here, but it does mean that you will be exposed to Christian values,” said Amanda Bell, Customer Service and 804 English Road Marketing Manager. When patients enter the waiting room, the first indication that there is Rocky Mount, NC 27804 something different about this practice is the Contemporary Christian music playing. 252.443.3133 “Every member of our staff is actually www.rmfmc.com excited about coming to work, and it shows in their interactions with the patients and with each other,” Bell said. RMFMC’s mission statement is: Caring for the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of patients and each other with excellence, consistency, grace and respect. Pediatrics - Adolescents - Adults - Seniors Their goal is to ensure that patients have a pleasant, memorable experience in their interactions with them, whether it is on the phone, in a treatment room, at the check-out desk or in the parking lot. “We want them to 252-443-3133 know that they are more to us than just a medical record number. They are important to us and they have a voice. We consider them part of our family. We won’t let them get lost in the confusing medical changes continually taking place. We are here to serve God and to serve them,” Bell said. Technology is continually being updated at RMFMC. In 2001 they moved from their location on Noel Lane to their spacious new

facility at 804 English Road. This move gave them the space needed to add certified radiology and fully accredited laboratory services for their patients. In 2006 they purchased an iDexa Scanner to measure bone density. In 2007 laboratory equipment was updated and they have just added digital mammography for clearer and more accurate readings. Diabetes education classes are held on the first Tuesday of each month and are open to the public. Smoking Cessation classes are also offered. Bell said that they are very excited to be working on bringing a major diabetes event to Rocky Mount. Every October RMFMC holds their exciting and fun Pink Night Out, which is a night for ladies to come together for great food and prizes and to be pampered. RMFMC is very involved in the Rocky Mount Chamber and was named the 2012 Chamber Small Business of the Year. They are involved in Rocky Mount Business Builders and the Women’s Professional Networking Group as well as Relay for Life and the American Heart Walk. In 2011, RMFMC received the prestigious Patient-Centered Medical Home Certification, and they are currently in the process of being re-certified. To receive this, they went through an extensive process of proving that they are meeting and exceeding standards of care from the time the patient first needs an appointment to after the visit. RMFMC now offers a patient portal as well as a smart phone app, which allows patients to communicate directly with the office and their provider electronically. Home Health Care Supplies, Inc. – We save clients hundreds of $$$ annually

2487 Hurt Drive Hampon Village Center Rocky Mount, NC 27804 252.937.7233 www.ENCHomeHealth.com

No one likes talking about growing older, and most people certainly aren’t keen on the idea of having to rely on someone else for help. We all want to avoid becoming a burden to our family. We want to protect the assets we’ve worked a lifetime to accumulate. We want to remain at home as long as possible. According to an AARP survey, 90% of seniors older than age 65 want to remain in their homes. However, as people age, they meet physical challenges in mobility and strength that can cause them to make the decision to leave their homes, whether it is due to the steep front steps or the kitchen cabinets they can no longer reach. Maybe their bedroom is on the second floor and navigating the stairs proves to be physically demanding and, more importantly, dangerous. Jim Womble, Owner and Certified Senior Advisor at Home Health Care Supplies, Inc., says that “Simple adjustments and renovations to a beloved home can make it ‘age-friendly’ helping the residents age-in-place comfortably, safely and independently.” Womble says that the first step in making any adjustments should be performing a thorough assessment. When assessing whether a home is well-suited to age-in-place, there are several major issues to consider including exterior safety, interior safety, and emergency preparedness. “As home care professionals, we can bring a fresh set of eyes, a more analytical approach, and significant experience to the task,” Womble said. Womble is very pleased to offer a range of solutions for keeping the client safe including their new Cellular Alert System that requires no landline and MobileAlert, the GPS-based alarm system that goes anywhere you go, allowing the client to get help at the push of a button! A long-term care situation has the potential to cause many complications, which includes causing them to miss work and lose wages, increasing stress or exhaustion, causing family disagreements or hard feelings when one per-

son assumes a greater share of the caregiving duties as well as depleting the family savings or requiring assets to be liquidated to pay for care. Health insurance doesn’t cover long-term care services. Medicare coverage is limited to helping people get back on their feet after an illness or injury and relying on Medicaid often means spending down assets to qualify. Their Senior Advisory Department has experienced Medicare professionals on staff to offer FREE guidance to seniors who are uninformed, misinformed, or just confused about insurance coverage, how Medicare works, what is covered, and what to do next. Seniors get unbiased information in easy-to-understand language about Medicare and other services important to seniors. They also have a large local referral network, which can help clients make informed decisions about health care benefits, retirement and long-term care. Knowing the right answers can save you thousands of dollars. “The big companies are not very good at delivering the highly individualized and personalized kind of support many patients simply must have,” Womble says. “At Home Health Care Supplies, our customers are loyal to us because, unlike the big companies, we are their neighbors and because of the extra care we take to customize our services to meet their special needs.” Going from place to place to put together a plan can make matters confusing, incomplete, and expensive. The greatest thing you could ever do for your family is to take care of things BEFORE you get to the point that an immediate decision must be made! If control, freedom, financial independence and care in your OWN home are important to you, consider including us part of your team. Home Health Care Supplies, Inc. is located at 2487 Hurt Drive in the Hampton Village Center in Rocky Mount. J.C. Harris Cadillac The 52 year tradition of J.C. Harris Cadillac can easily be summed up as a dealership that gives “a personal touch.” It’s the way brothers J.C. Harris, J.C. Harris, Jr. Jr., and Richard Harris, describe the dealership that their father founded in 1963 on Lodge Street downtown, and it’s the way they execute every operation today. That “personal” sentiment can be found in the massive amount of loyal, repeat customers that will only purchase their cars at J.C. Harris. It can be heard in the lack of an automated phone system, because the Harris family believes that anyone calling should talk to a person instead of recorded options. The Harris family, and their staff of knowledgeable salesmen and experienced auto technicians, could list a long string of state and national dealership accolades, but it wouldn’t be the way they measure their success, and it would be untrue to the spirit surrounding their relationship to each customer. Their love for the customers is obvious in how they treat them on the lot, but also in how they treat them after driving away. Each customer knows that they can call Richard or J.C. personally to help them. J.C. Harris Cadillac moved to their current location on Ward Boulevard in 1978, to a 23,000 square-foot building on five acres of land. They prefer the more remote location, doing J.C. Harris Cadillac it their own way, as they always 4030 Ward Blvd., Wilson have, with a personal touch, one 252-237-1111 customer at a time. Mon-Fri, 8:30-7 / Sat, 9-5

The Used Car Factory and 97 Auto Sales Match Cars & Customers 1357 N. Wesleyan Boulevard Rocky Mount, NC 27804 252.442.0902

The Used Car Factory and 97 Auto Sales

You may be a bit startled at first glance, if you haven’t noticed the big sign surrounded by several shiny used automobiles at 357 North Wesleyan Blvd., beside Gardner’s Restaurant. The sign advertises “The Used Car Factory” which is well-stocked with most of the popular brands of vehicles, about 200, according to Randy Hamad, which can be purchased with a low down payment of $500. And they accept trade-ins, also. The ‘factory’ is one of two used automobile lots, including “97 Auto Sales,” owned by the partnership of General Manager Randy Hamad and Chris Bass. Hamad said “97 Auto Sales opened in 2013 with three employees; The Used Car Factory opened in February of 2014. “We now have grown from those three employees to 10 employees in three years. The business is growing and things are looking very good.” Hamad’s experience in the automobile business goes back a number of years to when he was younger and his father owned a car lot on Sunset Avenue named “Bright Side Auto.” “I learned a lot from him and from Chris Bass about the automobile business and how to treat customers and contribute to the goodwill of our community,” he declared. “Business-wise, everything just lined up and came together for us.” The business name, “Used Car Factory” fits the operation, because the activities going on there look somewhat like a factory operation for vehicles. Drive in most anytime and you are apt to see one or more trucks delivering more automobiles to the business. The vehicles are off-loaded in a special place on the lot. Next, a good amount of time is spent inspecting the vehicles, including the tires, making notes about any repairs that need to be made and making any repairs that can be done there. “All of the cars must pass inspection,” Hamad said. After that, the cars are driven to the detail area to be given the final touches and

a personal inspection. The next step is to clean them up—washing, vacuuming and polishing, before they are put on the sales lot. Where do all of the vehicles come from on those trucks? “We try to buy cars that fit the needs of customers in this area,” Hamad explained. “We do business in Nash, Edgecombe and Halifax counties, all the way to Roanoke Rapids and beyond, plus other places north, south, east and west, wherever we need to reach in order to have the used vehicles that our customers want and need. We try to keep as much of our business local as we can,” he added. The business philosophy that Hamad uses is: “Getting the right vehicles that fit the needs of our customers, and putting people in quality vehicles that they can afford,” he states. “We don’t try to put people in a higher-priced automobile than they can reasonably afford,” Hamad said. “The average monthly payment usually runs around $300 per month. But if the customer buys a high-end luxury vehicle and something happens that makes it impossible for them to make the payments, it is a bad deal for them and us,” he said. “We use outside financing institutions, mostly, but we do some financing ourselves.” “When you treat your customers well, word gets around,” Hamad said. “Much of our advertising is word-of-mouth advertising and that’s one reason we strive to make sure our customers are satisfied with their treatment here.” “We try to follow a “Good Neighbor policy,” Hamad declared. “This is a great location and we love the Rocky Mount area and have a lot of Rocky Mount connections, family and otherwise. We try our best to support charities and activities here that need help. That’s one reason we try so hard to make sure that we can fit our automobiles to the needs of our customers.”

Faith Christian School teaching scholars to lead, learn and serve

Faith Christian School 1333 Faith Christian Drive Rocky Mount, NC 27803 252-443-3700 www.fcspatriots.com

Faith Christian School has been preparing scholars to become excellently developed leaders in the community both academically and civically since 1993. Our vision for helping students achieve their full potential begins with a qualitative academic experience within the classroom. Our highly qualified team of educators offers rigorous, engaging instruction and opportunities for students to hone their leadership skills in a student-centered environment. Scholars are challenged to build oral, written, and analytical skills through courses that support all learning modalities. We believe in supporting core instruction through the integration of technology and STEM-based classes, thereby preparing them to successfully compete at any college or university of their choosing. Our multi-leveled course offerings begin in elementary school with extra classes that offer opportunities for both enrichment and advancement. Honors level classes begin at the middle school level and continue to be offered in high school. Additionally, FCS offers an AP course curriculum and college level courses through our partnership with Nash Community College. The addition of our Leadership Academy in 2014 has allowed students to partner with local business organizations for education and mentoring. Many of our seniors graduate with 12-36 college credit hours under their belts! Our graduating scholars of the class of 2014 were the recipients of over one million dollars in merit-based scholarships to both public and private institutions of higher learning. Our scholars have a vested interest in taking charge of their own learning and pursuing their dreams through hard work and dedication to excellence! Beyond the outstanding academics of our dually accredited school, it is the desire of our school to expose students to as many different experiences in the area of cultural and fine arts as possible. Faith Christian has a strong fine arts program that allows students to grow and develop in the areas of music appreciation and performance, visual arts, and the performing arts. Students have competed in all three areas

and garnered top-level awards at both the state and national levels. Our Theatre department has partnered with North Carolina Wesleyan College in multiple productions, and has traveled to the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta to participate in the adjudication process of live theater performance. FCS was united on one campus with the completion of our middle school building in 2008 and high school building in 2011. The addition of these facilities has enabled us to utilize our state of the art gymnasium, tennis complex, and athletic fields to host regional games and state conference championships. Our state of the art science labs in our high school provide our students with invaluable hands-on experimentation experience. We’re preparing the next generation of teachers, scientist, doctors, and more! In addition to the areas of academics, fine arts, leadership, and athletics- spiritual life is at the center of all we do. We believe that all abilities are God-given, and that God has uniquely gifted each of our students in a way that allows them to specifically serve within the Kingdom and the community in which we live. Middle and high school students participate in year-long community service initiatives. Each month, our students participate in a monthly ministry focus that seeks to show God’s love to those in our local community and beyond. They can see the tangible results of helping others by giving of their time and efforts in collecting items for donation, raising money, visiting, and volunteering. Student participation in last summer’s Team 252 week allowed them to connect and serve with our community in an amazing way. The scholars of Faith Christian School are ready to lead, learn, and serve in Rocky Mount! At Faith Christian we seek to provide the optimal educational experience for each scholar whom we serve. We continue to innovate and expand our classroom and extra-curricular opportunities to ensure that each scholar finds the place in which they can excel! We invite you to come see the great things happening here!

Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home adding new services

1130 N. Wesleyan Boulevard Rocky Mount, NC 27804 252.451.8800 www.wheeler-woodlief.com

Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Rocky Mount is in the process of making additions to the familyowned funeral service business. Royal David, owner and president of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Winstead Avenue, said construction has begun on an on-site crematory facility and a reception room called the “Veranda.” David said the nearly half-million dollar project will occupy 4,000 square feet of space and should be completed by June. “The goal for the addition is to provide services which allow us to accomplish multiple functions at one place and at one time. This option will be especially convenient for families coming in from out of town or don’t have a local church available to them. It will also avoid the need to drive around town in bad weather,” David added. The funeral home will also offer catering services as another way to make the experience as convenient as possible. “Right now cremations are done off-site,” David explained. “The new facility will allow people to observe the crematory at any time, except when a cremation is actually being performed. This is part of a 10-step program that we are implementing called “Cremation with Confidence” to educate our client families about cremation taking the mystery out of the process and to further ensure grieving families that their loved ones are being handled with care.” The cremations will be done by David, who became a Certified Crematory Operator last October, and two of his sons who are going through the Certified Crematory Operator Program to be certified. David said current trends show about 35 percent of families are choosing cremations, and he estimated that number to peak at 50 percent by 2025. “Families today appreciate convenience and we all appreciate businesses that allow

us to accomplish multiple functions at one place and at one time,” David said. “A few progressive funeral homes across the United States and Canada have installed crematories on-site at their funeral facility. As far as we are concerned, we are honored that families chose us, whether it be a burial or cremation. We are honored to be able to serve families and we want families to feel comfortable.” “When families entrust us with their loved one, it is important that they know we are accepting full responsibility. With our own onsite crematory, families can rest assured their loved one will never leave our care,” David added. David said the new reception room will provide a convenient space for families that don’t have a suitable facility in the area for people to gather for food and fellowship following visitations and funerals. He added that for people looking to serve food, the room will comfortably seat about 60 people. David said the room can handle up to 100 people when the occasion may be a meet-and-greet session comprised of finger food and drinks. “Sharing food is part of American funerals, and a lot of people in this area love to feed their families,” David said. “Many people today live in smaller homes and condominiums that cannot accommodate large groups. We deal with many families that come from out of town and come in to take care of their loved ones and they don’t have a local church to take care of them. This gives them a small place to be able to take care of that. Also, it can be inconvenient to arrange for meal service at a banquet hall or other facilities, particularly when it involves driving across town on a cold winter’s day.” Wheeler & Woodlief is conveniently located at 1130 N.
