Making a Graceful Exit By Jenny White Staff Writer
Though transportation is a necessity on your wedding day, getting around in a stretch limousine on the big day is a splurge many couples spring for. “It’s fun for couples to set the tone for the best day of their lives with a limo ride or other fancy car rental,” said Lois McCaffee, the unofficial wedding planner for her extended family. The Pinetops native has helped plan the wedding festivities of numerous nieces, cousins and good friends, including three weddings in 2012 and two
upcoming in 2013. “I’ve mostly gotten limousine rentals for the dozen or so weddings I’ve helped plan, but my niece that got married last year on a family farm, opted for a rented vintage Bentley,” McCaffee said. “And I got a rented horse and buggy one time, too. But most of my family and friends want a stretch limo, the bigger the better.” Joyce Etheridge, owner of Heaven Angels Events, an event planning business, agrees that today’s brides love to have a special mode of transportation for their “big day.” “Traditionally, the bride
rides in a limousine to the church with her bridesmaids and other women in the wedding and then with her groom to the reception,” Etheridge said. Etheridge said she too sees brides veering from tradition and opting for more utilitarian vehicles like a large SUV, Lincoln Town Cars or vintage cars. “The SUVs have the room for everyone and the Town Cars are smaller but classy. Both are less expensive options,” said Etheridge. Etheridge said she always advises brides and grooms to go see the limousines or fleet cars in person, before signing a contract. “Typically, the cars you see on their website are not the cars they actually offer, so go see for yourself and make sure you’re getting what you’re expecting,” said Etheridge. One local limousine service in Tarboro, Williams Limousine Service, encourages brides and grooms to book early and come see their fleet and choose which vehicle they want to use. “April through October really books up fast, so when you know your wedding day, I’d encourage couples to come and see the vehicles and get their deposit in with their reservation date,” said, Rick Williams, owner of Williams Limousine Service. Williams has been in the limousine service for about ten years and has four limousines, a party bus, and a luxury sedan and luxury SUV in his fleet. He advises couples to
budget in about $90 an hour to rent a limousine, with a three-hour minimum. “That’s usually enough time to pick the bride up, wait at the church, and deliver the couple to the reception venue,” said Williams Etheridge said she would extend that even longer to at least four hours. “You know getting your photographs taken after the ceremony always take longer than you think it will,” said Etheridge. She advises if you have a big wedding party, make sure you book enough time for the transportation to cover an extended amount of time for photographs after the ceremony. Etheridge also said it’s a good idea to sign a contract with your limousine service company and pay a deposit when you book the service (or half of the total cost) and pay the rest the day of the wedding when they show up. “And don’t forget to tip, too,” Etheridge said. “If there’s ever a day to really celebrate and do something extra special like ride in a limo – this is the day to do it,” Etheridge said.

Everything old is new again
Vintage Is Trend In Bridal Jewelry “Vintage remains a strong trend in bridal jewelry,” according to Jill Maier, VP of design at CAROLEE. Harking back to the adage that “everything old is new again,” brides are favoring art deco, estate-inspired silhouettes when it comes to jewels. The desire to look fabulous without spending a fortune has never been quite so
high. Many brides are choosing just one or two standout accessories, balancing a modern detail-oriented ceremony and reception with their minimalistic, classic ensemble. Maier also notes, “The beauty of this jewelry is that it’s distinctive without being overwhelming. It can be worn alone and looks great layered.” - Metro

Wedding advice: Be open to ideas and expertise Once you announce your plans to get married, there’s a good chance that people close to you will be ready and willing to dispense their share of advice. Some words of wisdom will be priceless, while others you can store away for another day. When polling married couples, you will likely find they would change “this” or “that” about their weddings if given the chance to do it all over again. Here is some advice that you can choose to follow for your wedding day. Tip #1: Trust your vendors Couples often have unique ideas for their wedding day. It may seem tempting to spell out what you want in minute detail and insist on wedding vendors carrying out your wishes to a T. But the smarter idea may be to give vendors a little more free reign -- after all, they are the professionals. “I had a vision in my head of what I wanted my centerpieces to look like,” offers Jean M., Connecti-

cut. “I gave the florist my suggestions and the ‘feel’ of what I was trying to create, but ultimately I left the finished product up to her. When I walked into the reception hall and saw my centerpiece baskets overflowing with fall-hued flowers, berries and twinkling candles, I was so excited I had left it up to the expert.” When deciding on particular aspects of the wedding, you can give your general ideas, but leave the finished product to the professionals. Tip #2: Scale down Unless you are planning on auditioning for the show “Over-the-Top Weddings,” it might pay to make your wedding more about being personal and less about wowing the crowd with special effects and expensive treats. It’s easy to be lured into extra dinner courses or be persuaded to release doves at the ceremony, but will these extras impact your relationship or the life you will be building
Tip #4: Keep it in the family Selecting members of your wedding party can be challenging because there together? “If I had to do it all again, may be so many special I would skip the dessert bar people in your lives right now that you want to honor. I had at my wedding,” says Alice C., Ohio. “The spread Choosing a best man and a maid/matron of honor of pies, pastries, cookies, is a large responsibility and chocolates certainly because these people stand looked impressive, but it out in the wedding. Popular love songs stand the test of time There are many different ways to convey feelings of affection. Some people pen poetry, others bestow gifts, while still others feel moved by music and lyrics. Songs have long been a popular way to convey emotions, and love songs have been performed by artists from nearly every musical genre at some point in time. Although music is subjective, some love songs have stood out as fan favorites. Commonly featured at weddings or as the backdrop on romantic evenings, the following songs are considered some of the more popular love songs of all time. ❤ “Love Theme From ‘A Star Is Born’” (Evergreen): This Barbara Streisand classic from the hit film helped Streisand earn both an Academy Award for Best Song from a Motion Picture and Grammy Award for Song of the Year. ❤ “Up Where We Belong”: Few people can forget the ending scene of “An Officer and a Gentleman” when Richard Gere sweeps Debra Winger off of her feet. The song “Up Where We Belong” by Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker from the movie will always be a romantic favorite. ❤ “All My Life”: Former Jodeci members K-Ci and JoJo created an enduring romantic song with this hit. ❤ “Save the Best for Last”: This song became Vanessa William’s signature song and a smash hit.
❤ “Be With You”: Soul singer Mary J. Blige emphasizes sticking with the one you love by being loyal. ❤ “I Do It for You”: This Bryan Adams hit was nominated for an Oscar as the theme for the 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” ❤ “I’ll Make Love to You”: This Boyz II Men song was one of the longest-running No. 1 hits of all time. ❤ “Lovesong”: The Cure’s Robert Smith penned this song as a present to his wife, Mary, in 1988. ❤ “Sweet Love”: Anita Baker’s soulful hit helped turn her from a budding R&B singer into a household name. ❤ “Love Me Tender”: His good looks and gyrating hips helped thousands of women fall in love with Elvis Presley. However, this signature love song endeared the famed crooner to many others. ❤ “My Heart Will Go On”: Celine Dion’s theme from “Titanic” became one of the most popular love songs after the film’s 1997 debut. ❤ “I’ll Stand by You”: This 1994 hit from The Pretenders can be interpreted as a song of romantic devotion or a commitment to friends. ❤ “You Are So Beautiful”: Joe Cocker makes the list again with this soulful hit.

Pack an emergency wedding day kit Brides- and grooms-to-be hope and pray their wedding day will go off without a hitch. After a year or more of planning and writing checks for so many things, couples hope that it all comes together in the end. For most it does. Others may need a little help keeping things on track. Although the idea is to hope for the best, being prepared for a few obstacles along the way can ensure the day goes smoothly. Many couples find it wise to pack an emergency kit, stocked with items to make repairs or handle tie ups with ease. Brides and grooms can use this checklist to compile a wedding day kit that meets their needs and customize with any speciality items.

Wearing hand-me-down gowns Brides-to-be devote plenty of time to thinking about their wedding gowns, and some women spend months scouring stores for their ideal designs. But what if the perfect gown is already tucked away in a family member’s closet? Some brides view a hand-medown gown with a degree of skepticism. After all, people may poke fun at dresses passed on by well-meaning friends and family that feature styling that is outof-date (think 1980s shoulder pads). However, in most cases, dresses can be altered and turned into something that fits the new bride’s style and physique. According to About.com, the average machine-sewn wedding gown made of synthetic fabrics will cost $500 and up. High-end fabrics and special orders can increase the cost of a gown to $2,000 or more. Designer gowns custom cut and sewn according to a bride’s measurements may cost as much as $6,000. Some brides simply do not want to pay that much for a gown they will only wear once. In this instance, a passed-down gown makes a viable alternative. When considering a vintage or hand-me-down gown, there are certain questions brides-to-be should ask before agreeing to wear the dress. q What is the size? It’s much easier to take fabric away from a gown than to match it and add fabric to the gown. Therefore, try on the gown and see if alterations will be possible. Do not plan on crash dieting to fit in the gown. You may not
reach your goal, and then you may be stuck with an ill-fitting dress. How well a gown fits goes a long way toward the bride’s appearance. q What is the condition? Many dry cleaners offer wedding gown preservation packages, and brides have been taking advantage of this service. The gown is cleaned and boxed so it will not discolor. If you are receiving a gown that has undergone this treatment, there is a greater liklihood it will look much like it did when it was first worn. However, some former brides do not store their gowns properly, and they may be stained, torn or discolored. q Is the shape flattering? If a gown has good “bones” to it, there’s a chance that a talented tailor can turn it into something that will enhance your frame and body type. If the gown is of a style that you never would have considered, such as a mermaid cut or princess style, then it may be much more difficult and costly to transform it into something workable. q Are you settling? Every bride wants to feel romantic in her wedding gown, which is why shopping for a gown is often akin to searching for lost treasure. If the handme-down gown doesn’t give you goosebumps when you put it on and you’re settling simply because of the price, then it may put a damper on your entire wedding. q What’s your budget? Even though hand-me-down wedding dresses may be no cost initially, you may accumulate a sum depending on the extent of the alterations needed. Get an estimate from a seamstress and find out if it will be financially smart to go with the used gown or purchase something new. Wearing a hand-me-down gown is something many brides consider, especially if the dress has sentimental meaning or is a family heirloom. Certain questions should be answered before finalizing the decision to go with something vintage. - Metro

Churchwell’s L.A. Bass Jr. retiring after 48 years in jewelry business L. A. Bass, Jr. is retiring from Churchwell’s Jewelers in Wilson after a recent illness. Churchwell’s Jewelers has a long history of crafting the finest unique gold, platinum and sterling jewelry. The company was established in 1905 by Mrs. Mary Churchwell. At that time, Churchwell’s was simply a retail jewelry store catering to the local people of Wilson. Mrs. Churchwell continued to operate the jewelry store by herself until the 1940’s when Harold Seburn approached her about buying the jewelry store. Mr. Seburn, who was the second Graduate Gemologist in the state of North Carolina, continued to operate Churchwell’s Jewelers throughout his career until

In the spring of 2005, while attending a horse show, one of Churchwell’s regular customers recommended that they pursue Fishing Tournament Anglers, and start designing nautical jewelry. That next spring, Churchwell’s Jewelers debuted their line of gold and sterling silver nautical jewelry at the 2006 Miami International Boat Show. Churchwell’s was signed as a sponsor of the World Sailfish Championship in Key West, the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Tournament in San Destin, Florida, The Big Rock in Morehead City, North Carolina, The White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland and the Charleston Harbor Billfish Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina.

Since 2007, while challenging years financially for a lot of retailers, Churchwell’s has had some of its best years. A lot of its growth is directly attributable to the Equestrian and Nautical lines’ tremendous acceptance. Most of the jewelers that you will see at a boat show or a fishing tournament are simply resellers of someone else’s designs. Churchwell’s is a very unique business. First and foremost, it is a family owned and operated business. L.A. and Anderson continue to have their fingers on the pulse of every aspect of design, manufacturing and selling. All of their fine gold and unique sterling jewelry is designed right in the store. So it is with regret that L.A. Bass Jr. is pictured from 1974. Tradition behind tossing rice
Once a couple has been married, tradition states that they be covered with tossed rice upon exiting the ceremony. The idea of throwing rice began during the Middle Ages, when rice symbolized fertility. Rice was tossed at the married couple in the hopes they would have many children and be blessed with prosperity as a family. A false rumor spread that rice was harmful to birds who would eat the discarded rice and explode, so many people now use birdseed or rose petals as alternatives. However, rest assured that the rice myth has been debunked by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. - Metro

Sheath bouquet This is a longer and slim bouquet meant to be carried in the crook of a bride’s arm. It is best suited to long-stemmed flowers like calla lilies. These are be the most costeffective
n
bouquets, though some can be costly. Keeping your blooms of choice confined to flowers that are in bloom during the season of your wedding is key in keeping the price down. Choosing roses during November is going to cost you twice, if not triple, what roses would cost in June. Some popular flowers that bloom in Southern states during spring months include: • Dogwood • Forsythia • Foxglove • Larkspur • Magnolia • Peach • Pear • Plum • Rose • Sweet pea

Historic Wedding Though it’s difficult to call it official, the 2004 wedding of Vanisha Mittal, daughter of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, is considered the most expensive wedding in history. With a final tab of $60 million, the wedding included invitations mailed in silver boxes, rooms at a five-star Paris hotel and performances by pop singer Kylie Minogue. That final price tag dwarfs another famously expensive wedding, that of British soccer star Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen McLoughlin. The Manchester United star reportedly spent $8 million on their nuptials,

which included a chartered flight for friends to Genoa for a masked ball on a yacht valued at well over $100 million. Americans might recall a more recent and extravagant wedding, that of former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, whose 2010 wedding reportedly cost between $3 to 5 million. A similar price tag was given to Beatles legend Paul McCartney in 2002 when he married former model Heather Mills. Unfortunately, that cost did not guarantee marital bliss, as the couple separated in 2006, eventually divorcing in 2008. - Metro
Vanisha Mittal married businessman and philanthropist Amit Bhatia in 2004.

What’s with breaking the glass? The Jewish tradition of breaking glass at a wedding dates back to the destruction of the ancient temple in Jerusalem. Taking place at the conclusion of the Seven Blessings, the breaking of the glass is meant to symbolize the breaking of the Jewish people’s hearts at the destruction of the temple. In addition, the tradition is meant to remind the Jewish people that even at the height of their happiness, they must never forget the destruction of the temple. During the ceremony, the groom will stomp on a glass wrapped in a cloth. Though it’s meant to remind the bride and groom as well as their guests what the Jewish people have been through throughout their history, this tradition has become a ritual many look forward to despite what it’s intended to symbolize. In fact, the shouts of “Mazel tov!” once the glass has been smashed typically begins a joyous celebration. - Metro

Make the most of a rainy wedding day When a couple envisions their ideal wedding day, rain rarely comes into the picture. Unless a couple likes things soggy, chances are rain on the big day will be a bit of a disappointment. While there’s no way couples can keep it from raining on their wedding days, there are ways to prevent rain from ruining the ceremony and the ensuing festivities. ❤ Have a contingency plan in place well in
advance. This doesn’t mean couples need to plan two weddings, they just need to discuss with vendors what the plan of action is going to be should rain arrive. When booking a venue, discuss with the venue manager what the venue can do if it rains. It’s best to also have a contingency photography plan in place as well. When choosing a photographer, ask about his or her history with rainy weddings. Find out if the photographer has an indoor studio where portraits can be taken if the conditions outside are not ideal.
❤ Get dressed at the venue. Brides understandably fear their wedding dress won’t survive a soggy ceremony. To reduce the gown’s exposure to rain, brides should consider getting dressed at the venue. This means they will only have to wear the dress outside during the actual ceremony. Wrap the gown and other accessories including shoes, in plastic to keep them safe from rain and mud. If the wedding is slated for later in the day, call the venue and determine how early the wedding parties can arrive and how much space will be provided for the party to get dressed. The bride and her bridal party will likely
want to get there several hours in advance of the ceremony. ❤ Wear waterproof makeup. Brides-to-be should wear waterproof makeup. In addition, bring a collection of items, including hairspray and extra makeup, that can help combat the elements. ❤ Prepare the ushers. Ushers will need to be extra diligent during a rainy ceremony. Instruct the ushers before guests begin to arrive that their roles have taken on greater importance thanks to the weather. Ushers should keep an eye out and an umbrella open for arriving guests, escorting guests to their seats under a cloak of dryness. - Metro
