Hundreds seek employment By Jim Holt Staff Writer

The Nash Community College job fair provided a perfect medium Thursday for two distinct groups crucial to connecting with each other in order to re-energize a down economy – hungry job seekers and employers with available jobs. More than 700 people carrying packs of resumes swarmed the college’s Brown Auditorium from 9 a.m. to noon to squeeze in as much face time as they could with more than 60 local employer representatives. The event, dubbed the “Back to Work N.C. Job Fair,” was co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan and was free for all businesses and job seekers. “I helped host (Thursday’s) job fair at Nash Community College because we need real action to help unemployed families get back on the job,” said Hagan, D-N.C. “The job fair brought together more than 50 employers and 800 job seekers to help those individuals get the jobs that are available right now.” Hagan said jobs are her top priority, and she will continue working with North Carolinians in every corner of the state as well as her colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do everything possible to get the economy back on track. Walking amongst the booths and carrying a leather-bound folder

containing resumes to hand out, Marquita Williams said she was intent on attending the fair and finding a job after having moved from Roanoke Rapids. “I cannot sit around. I need a job, and when my grandmother told me about the fair – I knew I had to come,” Williams said. “We have everything to look for in this room. A lot of people who are unemployed or who really need an extra job need to come out to an event like this because the business representatives are taking their time to help us out.” The job fair has attracted about five more employers than last year, said Michael Coleman, the college’s career and job placement coordinator. The greatest thing about the job fair is that it brings in so many different types of employers, Coleman said. “It is not all one specific area. It really benefits a lot of different people, and not every employer out here is looking for somebody who is skilled and trained,” Coleman said. “There are entry-level positions being offered by several employers that can help some people who don’t have the training necessary. That is a big benefit.” Coleman said he has been very impressed with the employer representatives and their willingness to reach out to those in attendance. “I’m also impressed with the dress with the people this year. It seems

like we have a lot of professionally dressed people with resumes in their hands,” Coleman said. “Vidant Health made a comment they were in Edgecombe a couple weeks ago and there was a night and day difference with the preparation the people showed.”

Approximately 98 percent of the employers present at the fair had available jobs, Coleman said, and the remaining 2 percent attended because they knew they might need somebody in the future and wanted to get the information out on how to apply.

Good career paths for recent grads It has been a stressful couple of years for college students. An unstable economy has led many students to second-guess their investments in higher education, and fear regarding employment prospects after graduation are common among today’s students. Graduates who majored in fields of study that are more recessionproof than others could have decided advantages over students with other majors. Knowing which careers are still going strong and which have stalled can help college students with goals of finding a career with growth potential. Financial analysts and managers: Many forecasts indicate jobs in finance will continue to remain strong with high growth. Despite financial ups and downs, people still need to be educated on how and where to spend their money. Students with degrees in finance and marketing may have advantages over others.

â—? Engineers: Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs. Many different fields require engineers, from mechanical and civil industries to electrical and chemical industries. Engineering remains a strong course of study with many different subsets for specialization. â—? Networking/systems administration: With the world revolving around computers, jobs in the systems administration field remain viable. Keep in mind that there is also a wide array of competition in these careers, but the ability to make high salaries is what drives many to pursue careers in networking and computer systems administration. â—? Accounting: Similar to

other financial careers, accounting jobs remain stable despite the uncertain economy. Where there is money to be spent, individuals and businesses will require the services of accountants to keep all of their accounts in check. Entry-level accountants can receive in-house promotions and become finance executives. â—? Nursing/medical careers: Jobs in healthcare continue to be

strong as well. An aging population keeps nurses, doctors, aides and medical-supply companies in business. There are many different nursing specializations, making nursing an attractive career. Jump to page 11 ➤

Trade school enrollment rising As overseas production operations return to the United States, enrollment in trade schools continues to rise. Despite high levels of unemployment, domestic manufacturing companies are finding it difficult to fill positions, thanks in part to an attitudinal shift over the years wherein young people did not consider manufacturing a respectable or attractive trade. Such attitudes are starting to change, as indicated by the surging enrollment at trade schools. The Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, for example, is experiencing its highest enrollment in years, with students young and old looking to take advantage of the growing number of available manufacturing positions. Thanks to high demand, the school has even introduced a six-month certificate program for the first time in its history. Many manufacturers have bemoaned the lack of qualified machinists to fill positions, and those manufacturers are emphasizing that today’s machinists must be computer literate and be skilled in

computer-aided design and engineering. That increased demand for skilled workers has driven up their wages. In fact, a 2012 study from Georgetown University’s Center for Education and the Workforce noted that 63 percent of workers with associate’s degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering or manufacturing earned more money than the average person with a bachelor’s degree in the humanities or social sciences. As trade schools continue to benefit from the return of manufacturing jobs, recent college graduates continue to find a job market that is less than welcoming. Analysis of government data for the Associated Press found that in early 2012 half of recent college graduates were either unemployed or underemployed (working in positions unrelated to their degree). Such a reality has been advantageous to trade schools, which have become an increasingly attractive option for the masses of unemployed men and women. - Metro

Breaking through the glass ceiling A s the old saying goes, “A woman’s work is never done. Unfortunately, many women find this adage still rings true, particularly in regard to the workplace. According to the AFL-CIO, the average 25-year-old woman who works fulltime, year-round until she retires at age 65 will earn $523,000 less than the average working man. The U.S. Department of Labor says that women earn roughly 20 percent less than men. Though women have made large advances toward economic equality, a disparity in pay between men and women still exists. As if unequal working wages weren’t enough, many women face barriers in finding jobs and advancing their careers. The term “glass ceiling refers to the unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of

As difficult as it can be for women to advance, there are ways to break through. Female CEOs of Yahoo!(R), PepsiTM and KraftTM earn salaries as high as $45 million. Despite progress, there are still many women earning less and getting left behind. More men seeking nursing careers Male nurses haven’t always been such a minority. Although men comprise only about 6 percent of today’s total nursing population in the United States, nursing schools for men were actually quite common and about half of the nation’s paid nurses were male during the early 1900s. By 1930, however, the percentage of male nurses dropped to a meager 1 percent, as men fled the profession for more lucrative occupations. That was the case for several decades, until the late 1980s, when inflation, nursing shortages, a rise in nursing sala-

ries, and shifting attitudes about gender combined to attract new generations of men to the profession. Research indicates that men and women enter the profession for the same reasons. Both men and women are interested in working with sick and injured people and they are seek-

ing careers that offer challenges, reasonable job security and good salaries. And with many parts of the United States and other western nations facing nursing shortages that are expected to peak in the mid-2020s, when much of the current generation of nurses will retire, men will have a vital role to play in filling those gaps. Some researchers have even predicted that the nation’s ability to handle the projected shortage of nurses hinges on strong increases in the number of males entering the profession. While the number of men in nursing programs is growing, the public perception of male nurses, which has unfairly carried a negative connotation through the years, persists and continues to keep them away from the field. Many male nurses also recount stories of patients assuming they are doctors or asking why they had decided against attending medical school -- as if being a nurse was a fallback position rather than a first choice. Others note that the scarcity of male role models, instructors and mentors has made it more difficult not only to enter the profession but also to advance their careers. At the same time, nursing schools and organizations have launched initiatives aimed at recruiting men, and these efforts are paying off, albeit slowly. The population of male nurses is increasing by roughly 2 to 3 percent each year and it has been predicted that by 2020, males nurses will make up about 25 percent of the total nursing workforce. Another factor that may spur the increase in male nurses is age. On average, male nurses tend to enter nursing at a younger age than female nurses and therefore have the potential for longer careers. More information about men in nursing is available at the American Assembly for Men in Nursing Web site at aamn.org. - Metro

Job hunting tips for men and women over 50 Though the job market has improved in recent years, many men and women are still out of work. Perhaps most troubling, many of those people are age 55 and older who are fearful of an uncertain future and a job market where they are seemingly overlooked. According to a 2012 study from the Government Accountability Office, the number of long-term unemployed people age 55 and older has more than doubled since the onset of the recession. For many unemployed men and women over the age of 50, the harsh reality of a job market that does not value their experience or skill set is deeply disconcerting. But as difficult as the job market can be for older men and women, it’s not impossible to find a job, though it might take some ingenuity and perseverance. ● Don’t limit yourself. Those who were victimized by layoffs should expand their job searches to more than just their previous fields. While it’s definitely a good

Instead, focus on specific achievements and accomplishments. Achievements tend to stand out above titles, and men and women over 50 likely have achieved more than younger, less experienced applicants. ● Think small. Smaller companies wherein employees tend to wear many hats are more likely to value experience than a larger company. By the age of 50, many professionals have vast experience in a host of different positions, and that versatility is likely to appeal to a small company. Finding a job after the age of 50 isn’t easy. But taking a broad approach and emphasizing as opposed to downplaying your experience might help you stand out among a crowded pool of applicants. - Metro

How to update your resume for success

Career From page 5 ● Software design and development: Keeping today’s digital world running requires a staff of people constantly updating and creating new software. From games to business applications to all of those entertaining apps downloaded each day. ● Educators: The Millenial generation is just as large as the Baby Boom generation, and children will continue to fill up classrooms across the world. It is estimated three million more teachers are needed by 2015 to fill openings in the United States alone. Also, initiatives to require Pre-K classes could increase the number of education jobs even further. ● Computer information security: The need to protect personal information from those who want to exploit it continues to grow. Computer information security will continue to increase with the expansion of technological applications. - Metro

Updating a resume is one of those necessary tasks that always seems to fall by the wayside. Rather than updating a resume periodically, many men and women wait to work on their resume until they’re ready to start looking for a new job. But procrastination can make it difficult to remember all that new information that can make a person more attractive to prospective employers. Updating a resume more regularly is a good way to guarantee each accomplishment gets its due. In addition to staying on top of things, there are additional ways men and women can update their resumes and increase their chances of being noticed. ● Stay on top of keywords. Keywords are certain terms

But candidates can use these keywords in their resumes making themselves more visible. Men and women should research industry trends to discover which words are most popular now, and then include them on their resumes. ● Update the education section. Men and women who earned their degree years ago might still be able to update the education section on their resume. If any certificates were earned or any courses were completed since the last time a resume was updated, include that in the education section. For those who prefer not to tinker with their education section, create a new section titled “Professional Activities” and then include courses or degrees earned post-college. ● Remove less relevant information.
