As I watch one of the busiest wedding season booms in the industry come to a close, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude seeing the smiling faces in celebrations of all sizes and the creativity brimming with wedding after wedding. In many ways, our industry was pushed to go from zero to a hundred in a matter of months with two years squeezed into one, echoing the idea that no matter the circumstances, we show up for love in big ways and usually with a bottle of champagne in hand. To see love honored and commemorated without the pressure of past restrictions is such a gift and one that I’m sure none of us will take lightly again. We are thrilled you are here with us to revel in the beauty of the pages ahead as you take in bits and pieces that resonate with your vision. There is certainly no shortage of enlivening inspiration in this magazine; a cozy modern styled proposal, wedding day looks for your groom to get excited about, a perfectly snow-dusted Scandinavian wedding in the foothills of Morrison, to an abundance of real and completely unique love stories that serve as a reminder that your day is just that, your own. The Rocky Mountain Bride team and I cannot wait to share in this journey and connect you with the Colorado vendors and inspirations that are close to our hearts as you begin to plan for not only your special day, but a lifetime of partnership ahead!

poppin’ the question Inspired by the elements in Scandinavian design and a characteristic of coziness and comfortable conviviality, stylist Radix Creative designed an intimate proposal with a heavy play on texture, movement and a subtle color palette. The understated and simplistic elegance of the atmosphere is all in the details. The modern Nordic tent made from canvas and wood is not only visually stunning but also inviting and warm, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who enters.

Becca + Austin / Maroon Bells Becca and Austin attended the same high school and college in Texas but it wasn’t until they both moved back to Houston after graduation that their paths crossed. After a year and a half of dating, Becca and Austin took a summer trip to Colorado. They visited Vail and headed to Aspen for four days of hiking and exploring. Austin made dinner plans preceded by a trip to Maroon Bells and suggested Becca get fully ready for their dinner reservation in case they were cutting it close. Once there, they strolled around the trails before making their way to the amphitheatre to watch the sunset. Becca noticed Austin was being exceptionally quiet, a trait very unlike him. Right as they reached the most stunning view in the park, Austin got down on one knee and proposed! Shortly after, Becca noticed the girl who was taking pictures of the mountains was now snapping photos of them. Austin arranged for a secret proposal photo shoot with photographer Jenny Smiley. They celebrated with a champagne toast and spent the next two hours laughing and reminiscing on their new engagement.

Michael + Doug / Lost Gulch Overlook Michael and Doug’s love story unfolded three years ago in the spring of 2018. Michael, who hailed from Houston, Texas, was temporarily working in Doug’s hometown of Richmond, Virginia when the two matched on Tinder at the right time and the right place. Michael made the first move by not just swiping right on Doug’s profile but sending a “Super Like” instead, without a moment’s hesitation Doug reached out to introduce himself. Soon after the initial conversation, there was an instant connection providing the perfect opportunity for the pair to meet in person. One date led to another and on the third occasion after enjoying a night at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Michael gifted Doug a charming leather bound journal with a handwritten note inside expressing his desire to pursue their newfound relationship. Two and a half years later with long-distance under their belts and an engagement, Michael and Doug now call Denver home!

TERRACOTTA TONES Whether you are the guest at a wedding or a star of your own nuptials, a charcoal or textured gray (pictured) suit from SuitShop is one that should be on your radar. It’s timeless, not too trendy and flashy, but still different enough to turn heads. Combining a gray suit with a terracotta or marigold tie is a surefire way to inject your wardrobe with masculine sophistication. For something more on the daring side to complement your getup, add a pair of brown leather tassel loafers to the equation. If your groom is hesitant about rocking a white or yellow gold wedding band, consider going the nontraditional route with tungsten. Rings made of tungsten carbide are extremely durable and scratch resistant and incorporate materials like wood. Hitched created this black tungsten band featuring a polished dome profile and koa wood inlay. Great for the outdoorsman and guys who work with their hands.

BLUE HUES You might think that your man only needs to make one fashion choice for the big day, but that means you forgot about one tiny detail, cufflinks. Get personal and engrave his initials into this pair of monogram cufflinks, made of wood from a white oak whiskey barrel. SwitchWood understands cufflinks are a necessary accessory for any groom sporting a suit or tux at the altar. For those who are ready to embrace a more formal appearance, donning a black tuxedo will perpetually be a colorway safe choice, however, it doesn’t get more dapper than a rich colored Brilliant Blue suit from SuitShop. Blue ensembles are steadily becoming more popular, with a variety of hues and textures, a blue suit reflects self-confidence and boldness. Made from electric blue fabric, this modern, fashion-forward style pairs perfectly with a crisp white dress shirt and classic brogue detailed leather shoes in cognac brown. Finally, complete the outfits with a soft gray topographic tie for the best and smoothest look.

EARTHY STATEMENT

Delicate shades of mint and sage can work for a beach wedding, a rustic country celebration, a spring garden party, even a festive fall reception. Working with a green palette opens up your options for suits and tuxedos, as classic black and neutral suits each complement greens well. Accessorize with neckwear and pocket squares to add a pop of color to your attire. Kind Design offers a wide selection of custom topographic ties. With over 500 colors to choose from, there’s no hard and fast rules on wedding ties. To elevate the look even more, opt for a minimalist watch that has a prominent vintage aesthetic. The Spartan watch in black from SwitchWood goes great with any attire without overshadowing other elements of the wardrobe. Watches also make a useful, timeless gift to show your love and how much you care.

LESS IS MORE Sometimes, less really is more. From the paper pieces designed by Scarlet Gilia Creative to the florals from Fairytale Floral, colors of black and white pair with natural earth tones like forest green, taupe and hints of romantic blush. While we love an elongated, cascading bouquet with a large concentration of flowers and vines, there’s something to be said about the simplicity of pure white peonies and pastel-colored roses against evergreen foliage bound tightly together.

TOUCH OF WHIMSY After exchanging vows, you and your guests can head into the barn for dining and dancing. Characterized by its industrial-meets-chic aesthetic, the atmosphere is replete with white washed wood walls, exposed beams, and eyecatching accent fixtures. You don’t have to downsize your guest list to keep things cozy. Seat everyone at one long table for a family style dinner, it’s the details that create a feeling of intimacy. If you’re seeking a way to bring whimsical, airy elements inside, look no further. You can incorporate string lighting for ambiance and charm. It will feel as though you’re dining under the stars.

Each place setting is paired with black flatware, a wood grain charger, white plates, minimal typography printed menu and a fringe linen napkin for a harmonious look. Naturally, berries also make an appearance this time of year. A sprig of pine or berry adds a sweet subtle touch and gives a nod to nature without having to trek outside.

Brooke + Abhay B A S A LT Brooke and Abhay met while working at The St. Regis Aspen Resort nestled at the base of Aspen Mountain. The pair caught feelings for each other at a mutual friend’s going away party in early 2018 and the rest is history! After two years of dating, Abhay planned an adventurous and momentous trip to Snowmass. The couple started the day with an exciting dog sled ride through the pristine Snowmass backcountry. Abhay’s original location to pop the question along the flowing river quickly fell through after realizing a group of teenage girls were taking selfies in the very same spot. Abhay was starting to become impatient when the owner of the venue came to his rescue and suggested an exceptional area for fishing, knowing the couple was in fact not there to fish. Brooke and Abhay trekked through knee deep snow making their way to a nearby tree beside the river. The moment finally came, Abhay got down on one knee and asked Brooke to marry him! Brooke and Abhay planned a rustic, boho ranch elopement.

FA L L I N G I N L O V E “Abhay and I met, fell in love, and started our lives together in the Roaring Fork Valley. So, it was only appropriate to get married in the same place where it all started. Last year, we would take daily walks around Basalt and fell in love with the valley and each other all over again.”

62

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Do not forget you’re marrying your soulmate. That is the whole reason for all of it. Not everything is going to be perfect, but you have the power to make it as special as you want. Don’t stress the little details. I know, easier said than done. It felt so much more special to elope and we are so glad we did, because not only did our wedding not start on time, but we didn’t feel bad about pushing it back two hours as everyone was running behind.”

Caitlin +Christopher BOULDER Caitlin and Christopher met through a mutual friend who surprisingly had no intention of playing matchmaker. Caitlin was hosting Friendsgiving and in the process of preparing the stuffing, Christopher, who had just arrived with several of the guests, stepped right up and asked how he could help. Of course, he could help! The two uncorked an exceptional bottle of wine and the following weekend went on their first date. Two years later, on Valentine’s Day, Christopher and Caitlin signed their first lease to move-in together and returned to Christopher’s home to celebrate. Holding a unique crystal from Caitlin’s favorite crystal store, Christopher got down on one knee to pop the question! Caitlin and Christopher planned a romantic bohemian wedding for August 1st.

DANCING CHEEK TO CHEEK “Our first dance was to Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald’s, ‘Cheek to Cheek’. There was no dancing allowed at the reception due to the pandemic, so we were delighted to still have the opportunity to enjoy this special moment under the gazebo. The intimacy of the gathering afforded us the opportunity to really connect with everyone in spite of social distancing. It was sweet and playful to have the entire lawn to run around barefoot with my train unbustled.”

68

rockymountainbride.com / rocky mountain bride colorado fall & winter 2021

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “It’s pretty much guaranteed that not everything will go according to plan. Don’t worry too much, try to keep in mind that you weren’t ever in control to begin with. Keep things as simple as you can. Consider a smaller wedding. It is so intimate and you get to really be with your guests. Also, enjoy the moment and enjoy each other. It goes by so fast!”

Sindhu + Subash TA B E R N A S H

Sindhu and Subash met online while she was working in Dallas, Texas and he in Austin, Texas. They learned that they had both trained in the same hospital for years, but never met. The couple mastered how to make their newfound love last the distance for the next few years. Two and a half years later, Sindhu was spending a month in Washington D.C. for work. Subash knew her favorite place would be the United States Botanic Garden, one of the oldest botanic gardens in North America and located on the grounds of the United States Capitol. With the help of Sindhu’s sister, Subash planned a surprise visit where he would wait under a blooming Redbud tree. He hid and patiently waited for Sindhu’s arrival while she took an impromptu class on pollinating orchids, knowing she would eventually make her way to the Redbud. As expected, Sindhu was smelling the flowers when Subash stepped behind her and got down on his knee to propose. Subash presented her with a shell they found on a trip to Zanzibar. Sindhu and Subash planned an intimate, traditional wedding for August 16th.

- REAL WEDDING -

ETERNAL TOGETHERNESS “We had a traditional South Indian wedding ceremony. A favorite movement is a ritual that starts by placing a mixture of cumin and jaggery in our hands while we are separated by a curtain. At an auspicious time determined by our priest, we place the mixture on each other’s heads. This slightly bitter cumin and sweet jaggery, when ground together, turns into an inseparable mixture. The ritual signifies that we are to become inseparable through life’s sweet and bitter times. This is the moment when we are officially husband and wife and the curtain separating us is dropped. Our eyes meet for the first time during the ceremony. Having all these traditions included in our wedding ceremony was so fun for us to experience and share. Being able to understand the meaning behind each ritual only made the experience that much richer for us.”

L etie + Zach WESTCLIFFE By coincidence and extra tickets, Letie and Zach attended a local concert in Austin, Texas. While at the show, Zach approached Letie and complimented the shoes she was wearing. As she looked down, she noticed he was wearing the exact same pair, white Converse. The pair danced the night away and exchanged phone numbers. Four years later, Letie and Zach took a trip to Mount Bonnell, one of Austin’s most popular destinations that runs alongside the Lake Austin portion of the Colorado River. This was the same site where Zach asked Letie to be his girlfriend years prior. Surrounded by natural beauty atop the limestone mount with rolling hills in the background, Zach suggested taking a photo together. Right as Letie was preparing for the snapshot, she turned around to Zach on one knee asking her to marry him. Letie and Zach planned an elopement filled with rich fall colors for September 22nd.

MEMORIES IN THE MAKING “The highlight of our ceremony was the exchanging of our vows to one another. Although loved ones were not able to join, it was sacred to only be focused on each other and truly be in the moment. We had an intimate picnic with light eats. Having that personal moment and enjoying each other as husband and wife with a beautiful view was the best part for us.”

Anna +Nathan SNOWMASS

Anna and Nathan met through mutual friends while attending graduate school for architecture in Denver. Nathan’s original plan was to propose while in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for a ski trip with some of their best friends and the couple from school that introduced them. However, Anna and Nathan were moving the weekend before when Nathan decided to propose on an ordinary Monday night. Anna arrived home from work to find flowers and a letter on the coffee table. The letter contained a long list of all the first’s they had shared in that home and that Nathan wanted to marry Anna for the life they had built together and not the extravagant moments. By the end of the letter, Anna looked up and Nathan was down on one knee with his grandmother’s diamond ring. Anna and Nathan planned a modern mountain wedding for September 26th.

Layne + Brian BRECKENRIDGE Layne and Brian met while volunteering as Young Life Leaders during their time at the University of Texas. While they were simply acquaintances at first, one Saturday Brian was visiting his alma mater for a football game after moving to Dallas post graduation when he unexpectedly phoned Layne. The following day, they went on their first date and the rest is history! Two and a half years later, Layne was awoken by her mother with a latte in hand and a journal that her and Brian had been writing back and forth in for years. Written inside the journal was a new note from Brian, a hint of their someday approaching and that today was a very special day. Layne’s parents dropped her off at Scout Island, a meaningful hideaway spot that the couple treasured in Austin, Texas. As Layne walked down to the lake, Brian awaited along with a beautiful arrangement of pictures of the pair. He then proceeded to ask Layne to marry him! Layne and Brian planned an autumn wedding for September 26th.

A MOMENT OF PURE BLISS “All morning I was praying for the wind to calm down. As we were getting ready, I watched the trees bending and leaves flying and felt the cold seep in through barely opened windows. I was nervous. I had a feeling our ceremony was going to be much chillier than I’d like. Mid-ceremony, the wind was wilder than ever. As my twin sister read Psalm 23, the pages of the Bible were flying. She was weeping and I was too, it was the purest, holiest moment as we stared at the yellow landscape, a horizon of blues, snow capped mountains, and a howling breeze. Brett invited all of our people to wrap around us and pray over us and our marriage.”

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Weddings can be a bit overcomplicated, there is abundant joy in the small, in the simple, and in the all-hands-on-deck! I am so thankful for the chance to do our own thing and be ‘us’ without succumbing to the pressure of the world to do the big, the extravagant, and the traditional. Get creative! Do your own thing. Let your imagination run wild! Keep your nails blue, do your own hair, get married in the wildest, prettiest spot you’ve ever seen, and go when it’s yellow as ever. Justin

BRECKENRIDGE LaChelle and Justin met while working at the same hospital as nurses in the Intensive Care Unit. Justin was temporarily there on a travel contract before taking his next assignment in Hawaii. Neither of them were looking for a relationship, instead both longed for adventure. LaChelle was in the midst of planning a solo trip to Bali, Indonesia for her birthday when it became evident that the two of them felt more connected than they thought. One day at work, Justin asked, “So, what if I came to Bali with you?”. LaChelle became speechless and uncertain how to respond to someone she hardly knew, inviting himself to travel halfway around the world together. Without thinking a thing, her curiosity and excitement seeped in and she agreed. They spent their first date purchasing plane tickets to Bali! After four years of dating, the couple had a photo session scheduled for a fun shoot to do with their dog. Justin secretly coordinated with the photographer to turn the ordinary session into an engagement photo shoot. During the beginning of the shoot while in a beautiful rose garden, Justin whispered sweet nothings into LaChelle’s ear and got down on one knee to propose. LaChelle and Justin eloped in Breckenridge on October 2nd.

WESTERN BOHO MEETS CLASSIC “Bobby and I made the drive from Glenwood Springs to Marble listening to our favorite tunes. Once there, we got dressed in the woods and took off to some of our favorite spots. We tooled around the mountains and pulled over to soak in the views. We then discussed the idea of heading back to the Hotel Colorado for a night cap. The Hotel Colorado is such a historical venue that captures the western charm we love so much! With the hotel as our backdrop, the western meets classic theme we had envisioned was achieved!”

Delightfully Sweet Simple, white tiered wedding cakes aren’t the only option on the wedding dessert menu anymore, from buttercream detailing to decked-out edible sugar flowers or watercolor designs, there is something beautiful about the art of wedding cake designs and creativity that goes into them. Whether you envision a small one-tier treat or a towering showstopper, your wedding cake is a detailed element that deserves to be a confectionery masterpiece. With all the different styles and trends, we are breaking down tips and inspiration for your dream wedding cake with the help of Shannah Miller, owner and head baker of Sweet Ride Bakeshop.

CONCRETE CONFECTION Move over marble wedding cakes, it’s now the turn of refreshingly bold and distinctively chic concrete wedding cakes. Inspired by natural elements, these cool creations are a lot more gorgeous than one might think. With simple yet raw components, this particular style of cake features plenty of texture made with fondant to replicate concrete, making it that much more interesting and unique. For a contemporary twist, consider emulating this multi-tier concrete cake in a shade of norwegian blue adorned with delicate blush roses. We can already imagine this cake on display at an urban reception venue such as a restored warehouse.

A TRUE CLASSIC Wedding white will never go out of style, especially when it comes to your cake. An entirely white cake can be a nod to tradition, while still reflecting modern trends by incorporating texture, greenery and florals. This classic cake gets a feminine twist with horizontally combed buttercream creating a simple textured look. Paired with pastel florals on each tier and a hint of greenery, this design is as sweet as can be.

A PA I N T E D M A S T E R P I E C E For those hoping to achieve an artful touch to their wedding cake, a buttercream painted cake may be the ideal fit. These buttercream beauties are perfect for weddings that have an organic, garden feel, or with a very romantic and soft theme. Buttercream painting is the technique of using buttercream to create painterly designs on a cake. Just like with oil paint, the artist typically uses palette knives and piping tips to layer on the paint. Buttercream is a softer product to work with allowing it to blend well with other hues creating a stunning variety of textures and colors. This design is nothing short of whimsical with light and airy florals against an all-white buttercream background. We are falling absolutely head over heels for this two-tiered display.

Patrick GOLDEN

Kailey and Patrick attended the same college and worked together at a local bar. While Patrick was a barback and Kailey the bartender, she would often turn to him for help when making a drink. Their friendship soon grew into something that expanded beyond the confines of a working relationship. After four years of dating, Kailey was certain a proposal was near, especially with countless trips planned over the summer. One ordinary Friday, Kailey’s brother and sister were in town visiting Chicago, Kailey made plans to meet her family for lunch at the park, while Patrick would catch up to everyone that evening for dinner. When Kailey arrived, her sister led her down a path to a lily pond covered in greenery and florals where Patrick stood with music softly playing in the background. It only took a moment for Kailey to realize what was happening. Patrick got down on one knee and proposed! Looking back, Kailey recalls this unexpected moment, one she will cherish forever, and how surrounded by love she felt that day. Kailey and Patrick celebrated one year of marriage with a stunning anniversary session in the foothills of Golden.

Jamie + Jesse LOVELAND The Greeley Stampede is Colorado’s premiere summer western celebration, rich in tradition and heritage dating back to the 1800s. The popular attraction also features one of the largest rodeos in the world. Jamie was not particularly looking forward to the event, but her sister insisted they go. As the sisters walked across the dusty parking lot crowded with rodeo contestant trailers and trucks, a cowboy gazed in her direction. An introduction turned into several long hours of conversation and the pair went on their first date later that week. After two years of dating, Jesse planned a romantic weekend getaway in Glenwood Springs. One morning, they set off on an exploration to take in panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains from a thrilling gondola ride. Unfortunately, the attractions were closed due to high winds, so instead the two found themselves on top of Glenwood Canyon Overlook. Surrounded by rugged canyon walls and infinite natural beauty, Jesse got down on one knee to propose. Right as he opened the ring box, the precious engagement ring fell out onto the deck where they were standing, slipping through the cracks. Jesse immediately without hesitation jumped over the railing to retrieve the ring. Safely in his hands again, he dusted off the ring and proceeded to ask Jamie to marry him and she, of course, said, “Yes!” Jamie and Jesse celebrated two years of marriage with an anniversary session and vow renewal in Loveland.
