Abie Livesay

Being born and raised in Colorado, I found my love for the Rockies in a state that holds so many beautiful places. Through the years, I’ve been lucky enough to travel to many of the other states across the Rockies and have found a certain charm to all of them. Something about the fresh air blowing through the evergreens, or the sand blowing across the Southwest deserts, and the aqua blue lakes in the north, I couldn’t think of a better place to say “I do!” than the Rockies.

As I begin to plan my own Rocky Mountain wedding using RMB, I find myself in awe of the talented local vendors in each pocket of the Rocky Mountain region. I hope that within these pages you will find all the inspiration and tips you need to make your day everything you want it to be. We’ve scouted the best of the best in your area to provide you trusted local vendors. Happy planning!

DURANGO 101

Advice for a perfect Durango trip featuring favorite spots of the area. Like all of Colorado, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Planning ahead can make all of the difference for your guests and you.

SEASONAL WEATHER

Nestled at the base of the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado, Durango shines as an ideal wedding location in the Colorado Rockies. From May to September, the weather is warm and sunny, making it the most popular time of the year to tie the knot. If you are looking for that warm weather vibe and plenty of rays, June might be your best bet with average temps in the low 80s. On the other hand, if you are wanting a cozy ambiance to your day, look to January when the city is often blanketed with snow. For a more moody day, check out August. While there is a high chance of rain, storm clouds instantly add a dramatic feel, and they say rain on your wedding day is good luck, right?

WHAT TO PACK

Guiding guests on what to pack for your wedding can take a lot of the guesswork out of their decision. Feel free to add your wedding attire, whether it be cocktail casual or black-tie optional, to your wedding website. Here is also a great place to add little tidbits too, such as packing a shawl for the cooler months, sunglasses if you are having an outdoor summer ceremony, and reminding guests to drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness.

ACTIVITIES

Hop on the historic coal-fired and steam-powered train of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in the original 1882 depot in downtown Durango. The railway winds through steep canyons with breathtaking views in the remote wilderness of the San Juan National Forest to the mining town of Silverton. Enjoy the 3 ½ hour journey then set off to explore the town and grab a quick bite before heading back to Durango.

Take a leisurely drive on one of the many scenic byways of the area. Tracks Across Borders Scenic Byway spans from Durango, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico and runs along the historic route of the 1880s Denver & Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Railroad. The San Juan Skyway is an absolute must see! This way takes you through old mining towns and along steep curves and ledges showcasing the beauty of the land.

Explore downtown Durango and North Main Avenue for the best shopping and dining in the city! Relish in the thrill of the hunt for a one-of-a-kind piece at Antique Market along Main Avenue then pop into Animas Trading Company to browse the boutique’s unique finds from around the world. After shopping, sit down for a bite at Chimayo Stone Fired Kitchen or the Diamond Belle Saloon.

Make it Official

In the state of Colorado, you can get your marriage license at any county clerk’s office. Your partner and you must both be in attendance with proper identification. You will be asked multiple questions while you are there such as when and where are you getting married or if you’ve had any previous marriages. It will cost $30, and you must be married within 35 days of receiving the license. The state of Colorado does not require you to be a resident, have a blood test or witnesses. You have to return your license within 63 days of signing the license or late fees will apply.

Forrest

Claire and Forrest met while Forrest was traveling through Colorado from Montana and needed a subject for a commercial photoshoot. Claire volunteered, and the two instantly became friends. Forrest visited Colorado often, and the pair started dating shortly after his first trip! One year later, Claire and Forrest were canoeing in Vallecito Lake in the San Juan National Forest when they pulled up on shore to play fetch with their pup. There on the muddy shores, Forrest got down on one knee and proposed! Claire and Forrest planned a vintage-inspired mountain wedding for August 9th. “He paddled about one minute from the boat ramp before pulling onto the shore so he could propose. We were playing fetch with the dog when he got down on one knee. It was muddy and funny and totally perfect.”

PRECISE PLANNING

“The planning involved lots of spreadsheets and cruising thrift stores for vintage thermoses and glass bottles. The thrifting was fun, but my favorite part was designing our custom wedding stationery with Lucky Lady Paper.”

RAIN WOES

“The ceremony was meant to take place in the idyllic field next to the lodge, but we were forced inside by the rain. At first, it felt very disappointing, but once the ceremony started it didn’t matter - it was intimate and sweet and everyone could hear.”

ADVICE

Taylor + Shaye

river bend ranch

Taylor and Shaye met while attending Rocky Mountain Church Camp, but the two went on to go their separate ways only to be reconnected two years later as camp leaders. Two years after that, Shaye reached out to Taylor on Facebook and took a leap of faith to visit her in Colorado, and the pair have been together ever since! After a year of dating, Shaye planned the ultimate surprise proposal surrounded by both of their families. Shaye flew in Taylor’s best friend as a diversion surprise, who coyly asked Taylor and Shaye to take photos for her new photography business. As they were having their photos taken with the sun setting behind the mountains in the background, Taylor turned to see Shaye down on one knee asking her to marry him! Taylor and Shaye planned a classic wedding for October 6th.

“Washing each other’s feet was a highlight for the both of us. We were able to serve one another and that is what we both love to do. Another highlight was being surrounded by all of our loved ones as we committed and vowed our lives to one another.”

Alessandra + Billy

surprise proposal

While Alessandra and Billy paths crossed from being members at the same gym, it wasn’t until they became friends on Facebook that the wheels of their love story started to turn. Billy posted about a charity bike race he was participating in, and Alessandra donated to the cause. Billy was shocked and intrigued that someone he had never officially met before would donate. He ended up reaching out to Alessandra and asked her to a concert. The pair finally met in person, and the rest is history! After two and a half years of dating, Alessandra and Billy set off for an annual 4th of July trip to Durango, Colorado with a group of friends. While four wheeling in Hurricane Pass, Billy had Alessandra face the snow-dusted mountains to take a photo. As she turned back toward him, Billy was down on one knee proposing! The surprise didn’t stop there as Billy had more of Alessandra’s friends secretly fly in to capture the moment and celebrate with the pair!

Secret Garden Elopement

36 rockymountainbride.com / durango wedding guide 2020
Blooming Columbines, pops of periwinkle and golden hues combine together to create the natural beauty of this secret garden styled shoot. Heirlooms Design and a team of local vendors worked together to dream up this garden elopement. The inspiration came from the lure of summer coming on in a ‘secret garden’ and the muse of true love and natural beauty to inspire an at ease kind of romance.

The soft lace and flowing train of the bride’s dress, designed by Allure Bridals, adds to the light and fresh design of the elopement. The pop of color in the tablescape and florals are reminiscent of the first moments of warmth and brightness during the summer months.
