EDITOR’S LETTER Growing up in the Canadian Rockies, I looked towards the transition into the beautiful autumn season with great anticipation. I never would have imagined when I left Alberta five years ago that I would have the honour of working with the talented creatives that make weddings and love stories in our region pure magic. I feel immensely blessed to have been able to stay connected to the place that will always feel most like home. The second half of 2020 has thrown some twists and turns that no one could have anticipated or imagined. However, the tenacity and resolve of the wedding industry has been nothing short of inspiring to watch. Love truly isn’t cancelled and this magazine is a tribute to that. From urban engagements to weddings across the Edmonton region, this Destination Wedding Guide is dedicated to all the extraordinary Rocky Mountain love stories! Happy planning!

Serena + Kaelan beaumont community hall
It was a birthday surprise, but not their birthday surprise…Serena and Kaelan met at a mutual friend’s birthday party where they talked non-stop the entire time. A year later, our groom got down on one knee and proposed in the park where the two had their first kiss. Around four months and 225 wedding guests later, Kaelan and Serena tied the knot in a cozy, boho and romantic wedding at Beaumont Community Hall. They were incredibly lucky to have been married by Kaelan’s parents, a special and intimate moment filled with thoughtful vows and lots of smiles.

PINK PRETTIES While their wedding day was 100% worth it, Serena says that the wedding planning was by far the most stressful part of the wedding. If there’s one thing that everyone should know about wedding planning, it’s that planning a huge soiree in four months is not for the faint of heart! The couple’s highlight of their reception was the speeches, mainly because they were so special and well thought out. Honeymooning in Mexico was the icing on the cake and the perfect de-stressor for Serena!

Edmonton welcome to wild rose country
E D M O N TO N 1 0 1 Advice for a perfect trip to Edmonton featuring favourite spots of the area. Like all of Alberta, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Planning ahead can make all of the difference.
S E A S O N A L W E AT H E R Edmonton is Calgary’s neighbour to the north, and is the capital of sunny Alberta. Summers are long, comfortable and partly cloudy, while winters are frigid, snowy, windy and mostly cloudy. On average, the temperature ranges from 16°C to 23°C. The wettest month is June, so if you’re looking at having an outdoor wedding then you might want to plan around this month. August is the warmest and clearest month in the area, meaning it is absolutely perfect for a pretty summer wedding. You’ll have sunny summer skies during the day, and sparkly star filled skies during the evening. In terms of the winter, February is the driest month in Edmonton, but be prepared because it’s cold around this time of year! The city is nicknamed the ‘River City’ due to the North Saskatchewan River that divides the core into two halves, north and south. Edmonton experiences a significant amount of sun, similar to Calgary, which is what makes it one of Canada’s sunniest cities. The period from early July to mid-August is the best time for warm weather activities in the area. Make sure that you hit up one of the many festivals or events that take place in the centre of the city!

W H AT T O P A C K You always want to be prepared for whatever the weather throws you when you’re on vacation. We recommend that you bring some layers if you’re visiting in the winter, and some sunglasses and light sweaters if you’re visiting in the summer. Summer nights are frequently cool in the prairie cities, so you want to make sure you can enjoy those patio evenings while they last! If you’re heading out to nearby Jasper or anywhere else in the mountains, then you’ll want to pack some hiking boots and a bathing suit - you never know when you might want to suit up for a dip in a glacier-fed icy blue lake.
ACTIVITIES Another nickname for Edmonton is ‘The Festival City,’ due to the several large festivals that take place in the area each year. Whether it’s summer or winter, spring or fall, there’s an event for everyone! Gallagher Park is a hub for these festivals, and definitely a must-see for anyone visiting the city - you might be surprised for what’s in store. The West Edmonton Mall is Edmonton’s claim to fame. “West Ed” as many like to call it, is the 23rd largest mall in the world and is home to an amusement park, a skating rink, a waterpark, a hotel and a minigolf course. Don’t forget to stop by this marvel for a day of fun and shopping. When you’ve shopped ’til you’ve dropped, pay a visit to the Art Gallery of Alberta or the Royal Alberta Museum - both are modern architectural masterpieces! If you’re looking to get transported to another time or just want to get some fresh air, then the Neon Sign Museum, Muttart Conservatory and Fort Edmonton Park are for you. Fort Edmonton Park is a living heritage attraction which is nestled on 64 hectares of wooded parkland along Edmonton’s river valley. It’s incredibly charming, and if you’re a history buff then you’ll love learning about Edmonton back in the 1800s.

Make it official In Alberta, you can get your registration of marriage and marriage license at any registry agent office. You and your partner must both be present at the office with proper identification. Acceptable pieces of identification contain your first and last name, photo and a distinct identification number. Be prepared to answer multiple questions, such as when and where are you getting married, or if you’ve had any previous marriages. The government fee for a marriage license is $40, and you must be married within three months of receiving the license. The province of Alberta does not require you to be a resident, but it does require two witnesses at the ceremony. Your officiant will have the responsibility of sending the signed registration of marriage form to Vital Statistics within 48 hours of the ceremony.

Kara + Caleb hey you studio
Cue the summer romance track, Summer Nights…Kara and Caleb first met at summer camp, where Caleb was a staff member and Kara attended family retreats. They caught each other’s eye during a fun game of laser tag and finally went on their first date three years later. The couple got engaged while on a trip to Victoria, B.C. After a day of driving up and down the coast with a couple of their friends, Caleb dropped down on one knee at Sombrio Beach to ask his sweetheart to marry him. Caleb had been planning the entire trip around the big moment, and Kara had absolutely no idea what was going on behind the scenes. Due to the many changes that the pandemic brought, the pair scaled down their beautiful barn wedding to a small ceremony at Hey You Studio…it was everything and MORE! edmonton wedding guide 2020 / rockymountainbride.com

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE
“Focus on each other, not the event itself. Having to cancel our wedding really emphasized to us both that it was us, the couple, that mattered and not the wedding itself. Planning a wedding can have so many hiccups but at the end of the day, you get to marry your best friend and that’s what the whole day should be about.”

Caylie + James foundry room
James proposed to Caylie four years after they began dating, in the comfort of their own home. Funnily enough, the two were getting ready for a lifestyle shoot that day, which quickly became their engagement shoot. The couple’s bohemian neutral wedding was one for the books. The wedding speeches were heartfelt and the guests were beyond amazing - some of Caylie and James’ friends even contributed desserts for their dessert table.

QUIET MOMENTS
Planning for the big day was pretty uneventful, mostly because Caylie and James wanted something that was low key and simple. Once they’d secured the venue and the photographer, everything else fell into place. They both love to support local and sustainable initiatives, which is why they sourced much of their decor from secondhand shops and searched out local vendors. Plantable flower seeds with calligraphy names were used as placards and wedding favours.

PERFECT WORDS
The pair’s favourite moment of their entire wedding was the speeches. James’ father knocked it out of the park with his and made the entire room tear up! Caylie says that it was SO fun to hear him describe their relationship, especially the sweet things that James had said to him when they first met. The food was also a real win, as well as the caterer, who is a friend of Caylie’s. After everything had settled, Caylie and James travelled to Maui in February as a mini honeymoon and babymoon, while also celebrating a friend’s wedding.

real wedding
When Daniela and Elliot first met, it wasn’t what you’d call a seamless first interaction. A few years later, the pair attended a mutual friend’s graduation, where they ended up hanging out all weekend long. The progression of their relationship went from a few little texts, to four hour phone calls, to FaceTiming each other until they fell asleep. Many long distance dates later, Daniela and Elliot decided enough was enough and they couldn’t be without each other for one more minute. Our groom proposed to our bride on the elegant Fairmont Hotel Macdonald patio, after a day of exploring their special spots in the city. Did we mention that he flew out Daniela’s ENTIRE family from Winnipeg to Edmonton?! SWOON.

PERSONAL TOUCHES
The couple decided to opt for a modern neutral wedding with lots of DIY table decorations. This year’s pandemic threw them for a loop during the wedding planning stage, but the couple was still able to successfully push past all of the obstacles and adjust accordingly. The biggest highlight of their classic Christian ceremony was their vows, which were done just as the sun came out on their beautiful day. The food was amazing, the speeches were touching and the dance floor was a blast!

Chrislyn + John downtown edmonton
From the first moment that they met, Chrislyn and John had an instant connection that couldn’t be ignored. Some of their favourite things were what their dates were centred around - delicious food and great wine. As many couples do, the pair learned how to navigate challenges and revel in the happy moments. With the blessing of their daughter, Aria, Chrislyn and John decided that their next step would be to solidify their marriage and begin their journey as a family.

THE PROPOSAL This sweet couple had a simple but beautiful proposal. John wanted to recapture their first date by taking Chrislyn to the first restaurant they ever went to, Rostizados. They then walked about Grant Notley Park, a place where they spent a lot of time together over the years. As the two sat down on one of the benches to admire the view, John proposed and made it official!

Q & A with
Minted Photography What is your favourite part of the job? All of the wonderful people I get to meet and work with every day. Whether it’s a couple madly in love and excited to plan their big day, a family wanting to capture those special milestones, or another industry creative, each and every one of them inspire me and make what I do more of a dream then a job.
Do you have a favourite took of the trade? Other then my camera my styling kit is my favourite tool. I love detail photos and always found it difficult to find things around me to style with so I made my own (very large) kit and take it with me to every single wedding. I could literally spend hours styling!
Where do you come up with your ideas? I am always daydreaming. I get alot of inspiration from other art forms like paintings, dance, pottery etc... and nature has always been a very big influencer for me as well. Sometimes an idea just pops into my head from out of nowhere and then I spend weeks working out a way to turn it into a shoot of some kind.
What is one thing you wish you could educate your clients on? The importance of light. Light often plays a key factor in how indoor and outdoor images turn out. For indoors, a space that is well lit with natural light when the curtains are open is ideal. Think big windows, high ceilings and light colored walls. Reception lighting can make or break the character and beauty of reception photos. Bistro and hanging lights create great ambient light for indoor and outdoor receptions.
What is the last concert you’ve been to?

Fleetwood Mac. I am a huge Stevie Nicks fan!
What is your favourite wedding season? Summer for sure, the days seem to last forever and our soft warm sunsets are to die for. I absolutey love the way winter photos look but our winters in Alberta get very cold which makes it difficult to be outside for long periods.
Which job would you like to try for a day? I would like to try being a Hollywood movie or TV series actress for a day... although I did fail drama in highschool.
What is your Biggest Indulgence? Gummy Candies and Pastry. I can’t resist either of them.
What is your favourite journey? My favourite journey so far was the month I spent island hopping in Greece. Even though I spent an entire month there I still didn’t get to see everything and can’t wait to go back one day to explore more!
