Oh Montana, what a year it’s been! Nine years ago, I left my home state of Montana as a 19 year old who thought she knew it all. I can’t even begin to fathom all the incredible experiences, places and people that I’ve crossed paths with along the way. However, there is nothing quite like home and this year, I finally made the move back to Montana! Rocky Mountain Bride and this magazine is a huge reason why and for that, I am incredibly grateful for these upcoming pages. From creating inspiration on a summer day in Missoula at Western Cider with fast friends to a floral-filled afternoon in Bozeman, this magazine was created with the best of the best. This state holds so much beauty in each + every direction. From the big skies to the mountain ranges to the empty backroads, Montana is made for love. The love stories featured in this magazine are not only authentic to this state but authentic to the couples. One of my favorite parts about creating this magazine is to see different interpretations of Montana - whether it’s an elopement in the middle of nowhere with just the two of you or an intimate backyard wedding or a black tie affair in Big Sky - it’s all love, and love in Montana just happens to be breathtaking in every + any direction. I hope the pages within this magazine inspire you to dig deep while planning your big day while revealing just how special Montana is. Look closely at the upcoming pages that lie ahead as so much love was put into each and every one. I hope you find the inspiration within this magazine to help you plan your celebration, big or small, in the last best place - I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

The talented baker behind Sweet and Tarte, Kaitlyn Todd, crafts delightful colorful confections in her Bozeman kitchen. BLOOMS BY WILD BLUME Wild Blume is a floral design studio crafting stunning wedding and event flowers into artistic pieces inspired by the wildness of nature. Located in Bozeman and nestled in the Rocky Mountains, Sue Stark founded Wild Blume five years ago to pursue her love of flowers, design and adventure. Wild Blume features seasonal blooms that have been thoughtfully sourced in each bouquet, installation, centerpiece and more.

G A R D E N M E E T S M O U N TA I N S Sue describes her floral style as English garden meets the mountain landscape of Montana. The juxtaposition of these two styles is evident in her colorful, whimsical arrangements full of her favorite blooms from local wildflowers to dahlias and bearded iris to ruffly ranunculuses. Although each season brings news favorites, Sue uses the blooms to tell the story of each year through her flowers.

DESIGN PROCESS The design process starts with a study of color, form and texture of every bloom that is planned out to be in the piece. Focusing on the details of each bloom, while envisioning the overall piece in the context of the event, Sue bridges these elements together to create something unique for each couple!

ADVICE FOR COUPLES “My biggest piece of advice would be to have some fun and get to know the designer because you are hiring someone to be a part of your dream team. To create an elevated and beautiful event, it takes cohesion of all of the parts. Be ready to discuss your day at the macro level, have a budget in place (that can be the overall budget or a specific flower budget), and have a few questions ready. - Sue

hey, mee t

VA N C RAF T E D Madison is the artist behind Vancrafted Studio creating one-of-a-kind metalsmithing pieces. Her passion for jewelry making started when she took a college elective called “Jewelry Making 101, which made her immediately switch her major to Metalsmithing. This one class went on to transform Madison’s life. After graduation, Madison and her then-boyfriend, now husband Gage, set off for an adventure to travel the U.S. with their dog, while living out of their van. Not wanting to leave metalsmithing behind, Madison overcame the difficulties of working out of a mobile, small space and Vancrafted Studio was born! After years on the road, Madison brought Gage on full-time to help with her booming business, and the two decided to plant some roots in Bozeman.

What is your favorite pas t piece? “My current favorite piece is constantly changing. Whenever I come up with a brand new design that usually holds court in my heart for a few weeks until I dream up the next one. My current favorite piece is our Rainbow Earrings. We saw shapes out of sheets of sterling silver and form perfectly round, sterling silver wires into totally new designs. In the case of the Rainbows, we practice all of these skills, so every time we produce a pair it’s really rewarding because they are so intricate to create.”

Whe re do you source your s tones from? “I LOVE this question because it gives me a chance to rave about some other small businesses that you get to inadvertently support, if you buy a Vancrafted Studio piece. We source our stones from a handful of stone cutters around America. The stone cutters we work with the most are also a husband and wife team based out of Sanford, Colorado, Mark & Aimee Smith. What I love about this aspect of our business is that we can trace the turquoise through the very few hands it passed through to get to us.

What ins pi res your pieces? “My environment plays a huge role in what I create. To be able to put my whole being into making beautiful jewelry, I need life experiences and time in the outdoors. For example, Montana has had my heart since I first traveled here in 2014. Seeing Yellowstone for the first time sparked a new line of work for me that I made all out of the van. I used a wide array of stones that reflected the vibrant colors of the geysers I witnessed and was amazed by.

proposal

Majken & Kyle / Glacier National Park

Majken and Kyle met at a pub when their friends were flirting with each other, but it turned out that Majken and Kyle had the real connection of the evening! A year and a half later, Kyle’s mom gifted the couple a photoshoot in Glacier National Park. Kyle got very dressed up for the shoot, which Majken found a bit odd but didn’t think too much about it. During their drive to Logan’s Pass, Majken noticed Kyle was sweating profusely and worried if he was okay. Once the pair arrived, Jennifer Mooney, the photographer, situated them on a giant rock overlooking the valley. The next thing Majken noticed was Kyle down on one knee. As a doctor she was still concerned he wasn’t feeling well and bent down to check on him only to see a gorgeous ring being presented to her!

Alyssa & Zack / Butte Alyssa and Zack met through mutual friends when they were young. The pair “dated” in 7th grade but didn’t actually start dating until the end of their senior year of high school. After nine years together, Zack knew he wanted to make the proposal a complete surprise. It was Alyssa’s favorite time of the year, Christmas, and they finally had their own Christmas tree. One evening when Alyssa returned from work, Zack said he had an early present for her and pointed to a bag under the tree. Alyssa pulled out a small wooden box from the bag and turned around to see Zack down on one knee with the couple’s pup, Trout, asking her to be his wife!

Kennedy + Luke / Red Lodge

Kennedy and Luke met while attending Montana State University Billings. Three years into dating, the couple took a weekend trip to a tucked away cabin in Cooke City, Montana with a group of their friends. One day, the group was snowmobiling around the area, when Luke broke off from the group with Kennedy. He took her to a beautiful lookout point on the mountain to take in the stunning scenery. Then right there in the snow, Luke got down on one knee and asked Kennedy to marry him! The couple spent the weekend celebrating their engagement with their friends!

The Cape Cod gown by Katie May features a dramatic, low back and spaghetti straps. Lauren + David big sky

Lauren and David met while they were juniors in high school. Fast forward ten years, and the couple was living in Brooklyn, New York. One morning, David, a notorious late sleeper, was up bright and early cleaning the apartment and out running errands, which immediately aroused Lauren’s suspicions. David tried to hide his plan to propose by luring Lauren to meet up with friends for brunch in DUMBO. As they walked to brunch, they passed one of their favorite city garden spots, St. Ann’s Warehouse. Right there, under the Brooklyn Bridge, David proposed to Lauren, and then their parents and siblings appeared, who David had secretly flown out for the occasion, to celebrate with the couple! Lauren and David planned a modern summer wedding for July 20th.

BIG SKY SUMMERS

“As our families have grown and spread out across the country, summers in Big Sky have become the source of some of our favorite family memories. Big Sky isn’t a place our guests would typically travel to. Our wedding gave so many people an opportunity to experience Montana’s beauty, and we felt so lucky having so many people we love in a place we love.”

WITH THESE VOWS “We decided to write our own vows for the ceremony and were both admittedly a little nervous to share something so personal in front of so many people, but David absolutely stole the show with his vows. I genuinely don’t think there was a person there that didn’t feel emotional listening to what he wrote.”

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE

“My sister-in-law got us a beautiful journal and told us to write down everything we could think of from our wedding day, which was the best advice! While the day as a whole will always be memorable, the small details fade overtime. Having them written down allows us to relive the day in a way that is so sentimental.

Melissa was pressured to go out with Tanner by her grandmother, who was Tanner’s landlord. After months of insisting, Melissa finally caved and went for coffee with Tanner and never looked back! A day after their two year anniversary, Melissa and Tanner went for a beach picnic in Astoria, Oregon. The ocean holds a special place in Tanner’s heart, and he wanted the ocean to have a special meaning to Melissa, a mountain girl, as well. As they walked along the water, Tanner pulled the most perfect ring from his pocket and proposed! Melissa and Tanner were officially married at a courthouse on August 11th before flying to Montana for an epic elopement.

SPECIAL MOMENT

“After the stress of travel and getting ready for our ceremony, getting up to Glacier and having that special moment all to us was all I could ever ask for. Even with the unusually cold and rainy summer weather, we look back on the freezing rain as being a fun memory.

SUMMER STORM A rare summer storm blew into Glacier National Park casting cloudy skies and speckles of rain throughout the day. The chilly weather set a moody tone for Melissa and Tanner to twirl, laugh and nuzzle together as they relished in the moment of starting their new journey together.

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE

“As far as the wedding goes, it’s not the most important part. Slow down and take joy in each other and the moment most of all. Have patience in your marriage, especially if you’re forced to spend time apart.”

Bre + Wilds madison county

Fate had a big role in the meeting of Bre and Wilds. A native of South Carolina and custom boat builder, Wilds traveled to Florida, where Bre lived, for a boat demonstration. Wilds happened to be showing one of Bre’s friends a boat while she was there with her dog, Skipper. Skipper made it his mission to become the star of the demonstration, and Bre snapped some pictures of the happy pup with Wilds’s skiffs. After that afternoon, Bre tracked down Wilds on social media to share the pictures she had taken. Six months later after learning more about each other and realizing they had so much in common, the pair decided to meet up again. Their first date, a beach camping trip with their dogs, confirmed what the two already knew - they were soulmates. Bre and Wilds spent the next two years traveling back-and-forth between South Carolina and Florida every two weeks to see each other!

UNEXPECTED PROPOSAL Bre and Wilds had already decided to elope in Montana, which made Wilds proposal a complete surprise! The couple had agreed to not get engaged since an engagement typically starts the onset of pressure of planning a wedding. A few days before their elopement, the pair set off for a six-mile hike with their dogs. At the top of Beehive Basin, Wilds got down on one knee, presented Bre with his great, great grandmother’s ring and asked, “Will you marry me on Wednesday?” Bre and Wilds eloped to Black Butte on August 28th.

THE VOWS

“I had written my vows a few days before we left on our Montana adventure. I flashed mine at Wilds the night before our wedding so he had an idea of how long his vows should be. He then spent a good two hours writing his in our Airbnb. It was really sweet to see him so focused, and his vows blew me away.

Carly + Tim luther

Carly and Tim met while working at the same software company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A year into dating, the couple headed up north to Duluth, Minnesota. over the Christmas holiday weekend to Split Rock Lighthouse. Against the backdrop of a magical winter wonderland, they set off for a snowy hike up the bluff. At the top of the hike, the pair took in the breathtaking view as the sun set casting prisms of pink and gold across the landscape. Carly was busy taking photos when she turned around to see Tim down on one knee! Carly dropped down beside Tim in the snow and cried tears of joy. Carly and Tim planned a wedding inspired by the colors of Montana for August 30th.

“It was important that we get married in a place that was special and had meaning for both of us. I had never been to Montana until I met Tim when he took me to Luther to celebrate our first Christmas together. Needless to say the view of the mountains took my breath away. Montana has always been a special place for Tim, and ever since that first moment it has taken a special place in my heart as well.

Karina + Bryan big sky

While Karina and Bryan live in North Carolina, their connection and love of Montana is what brought them together. Karina spotted Bryan on Bumble and noticed a picture of him skiing at Big Sky, which caught her eye as she had attended school in Montana. She swiped right, asked him on a date, and the rest is history! A year and a half later on a warm August evening while on a walk along the beach at Figure Eight Island, Bryan asked Karina to marry him! The surprises continued as Bryan’s dad emerged from pretending to be a fisherman down the beach to capture the moment on camera as the rest of the couple’s family and friends also came out from hiding. Karina and Bryan planned an elegant mountain wedding for September 7th.

LONE PEAK Karina and Bryan tied the knot at Moonlight Basin with Lone Peak shining in the distance, the mountain that started their love story. Rust-colored velvet bridesmaid dresses brought in the colors of fall to the day paired with organic and neutral florals filled with sprays of eucalyptus.

“Even though we reside in North Carolina, we share a common love for Montana. I spent four years living in Montana while attending nursing school at Carroll College, and Bryan had been vacationing in Montana with his family for over a decade! It was Lone Peak that brought us together, and we cannot imagine being married anywhere else!

Getting a manicure will ensure your nails and fingers are looking their absolute best as you show off your new engagement ring.

caporal captures photophoto + film+ film caporal captures

Having a professional photographer on hand to capture the moment you say “yes” gives you a keepsake to cherish for a lifetime.

This is a great time to show off your partner as well as your new ring. Cheers, you have officially been upgraded to fiancé.

While the bling is the number one focus of a #ringselfie, the background view is also important. Try a few different angles to get the ultimate shine from your bling.

To cast those stunning prisms all around, you need bright direct light. Move your fingers back and forth to create these dashing rainbows.

Add a filter from VSCO or Instagram to brighten any shadows and keep the focus on your ring. Our favs are Lightroom, KiraKira+ and Instasize!
