We made it, friends! We’re on the other side of one heck of a year and I think it’s fair to say we’re all ready to celebrate. New Mexico, you are one tough bunch. You’ve been put through the wringer and still have remained humble and just as incredible as ever. I can’t tell you how refreshing it has been to finally receive emails from vendors saying how busy they have been and hearing excited couples make plans for their day with some resemblance of their original plan and vision. During my few trips down this past year for shoots, I reveled in getting the chance to create and connect, savoring something that used to feel so common for us in this industry but held a whole new sanctity this time around. From spending time bringing to life a dreamy country-inspired styled shoot on the family-owned Log River Ranch in Chama to featuring real weddings from couples across the state that still held true to knowing that no matter the tides, their love was still worth honoring. We created a special feature with a nod to the heart and soul of New Mexico in the form of artistic floral arrangements which incorporated inspiration from natural elements and the richness of the culture. These pages are a true ode to all of the good that is on the horizon and a testament that love does persevere. The Rocky Mountain Bride team and I cannot wait to share in this journey with you and connect you with New Mexico vendors and inspirations that are close to our hearts as you begin to plan for not only your special day, but a lifetime of partnership ahead!

xx

THE PROCESS

In-house clients are transported to the Old West the moment they walk through the doors. With country and Western music setting the mood, clients will indulge in the ultimate experience of total relaxation with a bourbon in hand as they wait for their full-service haircut, shave, facial and neck massage. The rule of thumb is to go in for a haircut at least one week before the big day with a cleanup and shave the day before or day of the wedding. Kristeena says to keep in mind it’s always better to schedule a consultation if you have a new barber or are looking to achieve a new style at least three months in advance. In terms of styling, she recommends applying product on dry hair and set with hairspray, keeping the hair in place during the ceremony and festivities to follow.

Ramblin’ Rose Hat Co. is a custom hat design studio crafting one-of-a-kind, handmade hats into artistic pieces inspired by classic Western styles. Located in New Mexico’s capital of Santa Fe, Sam Kate Toney founded Ramblin’ Rose in 2018. Her passion for millinery work started in 2010 when she took a college class during her undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After graduating, Sam traveled the country working seasonal costume shop gigs at regional theatres. From there, her talents flourished as her skills became more specialized and eventually landed her the coveted position of assistant milliner at the Santa Fe Opera. After years of building and designing costumes for productions and performances, Sam shifted her focus to hats worn by the everyday person and Ramblin’ Rose was born!

THE PROCESS

Sam Kate Toney combines her uniqueness, innovation, and technical skills when designing each hat. The design process starts with a conversation and a personalized fitting in Sam’s private studio. Sam uses her hands, a little steam, and a growing collection of wooden tools to build each and every hat. A vintage tool called a conformateur allows Sam to capture your head shape and is key to a truly custom-fitted hat. While trained in many mediums, Sam’s desired materials to work with are fur felt and straw because of their resilience and ability to last a lifetime. Beaded, leather, and fabric hat bands are also created by Sam to provide a finished and cohesive look. Due to her dedication to a small footprint in the hat industry, Sam refers to her pieces as a “lesson in patience.”

Smraa + Justin / Old Town Albuquerque Smraa and Justin met on what might be the world’s longest first coffee date, the pair even closed Little Bear Coffee down as they were both immediately smitten. That same day, Smraa invited Justin to join her for dinner with her sister and a few friends. One year into dating, Justin planned a charming weekend trip to Taos. His initial idea consisted of a beautiful dinner followed by professional photos and popping the question in Taos Old Town Square, but like anything in 2020, COVID-19 had other plans. Despite some hiccups, Justin orchestrated a new plot with Smraa’s favorite photographer. It was December 10th, the holiday season, when Justin surprised Smraa with a gift of Christmas photos and told her to get ready. The couple set off to Old Town as snow was falling from the sky creating a stunning atmosphere. As their session came to an end, Justin got down on one knee and asked Smraa to marry him in front of an old historic church! Amelia + Will / Abiquiu Like many college students, Amelia and Will met at a party during their sophomore year and immediately hit it off! Five years later while they were living in Washington D.C., Will suggested dinner on what seemed to be an ordinary Wednesday evening. The couple shared a delicious meal overlooking the water and decided to end the night with a romantic walk on The Wharf. As they made their way down the mile-long stretch along the Potomac River surrounded by the twinkling lights of the city and marina, Will presented Amelia with a custom made ring that he designed with the help of Amelia’s father and a close friend. Amelia and Will chose to have their engagement photos taken in New Mexico, where Amelia was born. Will quickly fell in love with the area and they hope to call New Mexico home one day. Caroline + Danny / Santa Fe Caroline and Danny met at Colorado College, where they had mutual friends but were dating other people. A year after graduation, the two found themselves at the same party in a cool brick apartment in downtown Denver, where Danny was the host. As it happened, one of Danny’s roommates was moving out, and Caroline needed a place to live. She moved in with Danny and two other guys from college a couple of weeks later. Caroline was teaching yoga and optimistically floundering through her early career, Danny was an ambivalently wannabe lawyer, and it was basically the series “New Girl.” Five years later, Danny and Caroline bush-whacked up the back of the Chalk Cliffs near Salida to a breathtaking view of Mount Antero, where he presented her with a baguette-cut gemstone mined from the mountain embedded in a rose gold and diamond ring. Madeleine

+

Christopher

CHAMA RIVER Madeleine and Christopher met at Camp Mendocino in the Redwood forest of Northern California. Madeleine was a first-time camp counselor, while Christopher grew up attending summer camp and was now working on the maintenance crew. On the first night of staff training, Christopher watched the new teen director drive up the gravel dirt road and offered to help unload her luggage. Madeleine politely declined, embarrassed by the amount of excess bags. The next day, the two toured the campsite and immediately clicked. After five years of dating, Madeleine and Christopher traveled to Italy. The pair drove through Southern Italy, passing white-sand beaches with swirling turquoise waters and enjoying the rolling landscape over Italian cuisine and wine. On their way to Rome, Christopher stopped in Matera, one of the oldest inhabited settlements. Among the ancient town and romantic elements, Christopher proposed to Madeleine! He had been waiting for the perfect spot that felt right to ask Madeleine to marry him. Madeleine and Christopher planned a boho chic vow renewal for August 10th.

LAS CRUCES

N O S TA L G I C N U P T I A L S Being connected and grounded in nature was especially important to the couple. Madeleine and Christopher walked together, hand in hand down the aisle with remarkable views of the multi-colored sandstone canyon towering in the background. Christopher built an archshaped structure out of juniper saplings, draped in marigolds from their original wedding. They recited poems and vows about growth over the past year and how to continue to support each other in marriage. Their nuptials ended with a traditional first-kiss to seal the exchange of commitment and love.

- VOW RENEWAL -

WHY NEW MEXICO “We decided to renew our vows to make the ceremony just about us. We chose the Rio Chama River because of the beautiful location and proximity to the red rose cliffs and monuments of Abiquiú. We wanted this celebration to be close to nature. Our wedding was absolutely beautiful which was in Tesuque at Madeleine’s family home, but due to the amount of guests and unforeseen weather conditions, the bride and groom did not get a lot of intimate time together. We decided to create this intimate vow renewal ceremony to celebrate our growth and love together, and capture the moments just between us.”

Chelsea + Keaton LA LUZ

Chelsea and Keaton met while attending the same church. Chelsea served as a volunteer and Keaton worked on staff. The two were just acquaintances at first, but officially started dating a few short months later. Most of Chelsea and Keaton’s relationship was spent long-distance after Chelsea moved to New Mexico to care for her grandmother. During one of their monthly visits, the pair decided they were ready to take the next step in their relationship with an engagement. Wanting to ensure the proposal was a complete surprise, Keaton planned to pop the question on a trip to visit Chelsea’s family in Massachusetts. After getting her family onboard with the secret, the plan of action was ready, her best friend would take photos and her sister organized an engagement party. Keaton proposed on Chelsea’s parent’s front porch, her most-loved location. She began to cry tears of joy and excitement, and screamed, ‘yes!’ Chelsea and Keaton planned a desert boho wedding for August 22nd.

UNITY CEREMONY “Having all of our family together in one spot for the first time in years, united and celebrating us was one of my favorite things. During the ceremony we shared a special moment by taking communion. We are both Christian and wanted communion to be the first act we performed as a married couple.”

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Talk it out. Talk about everything, everything you’re feeling even if you don’t feel like it’s the right thing to say. Your marriage is as good as your communication. If you’re on the listening end, listen and validate. If you have expectations or needs, share them. Your spouse doesn’t know if you don’t tell them. Let your words be gracious and give your spouse grace. They’re doing the best they can.”

Simone + Jack S A N TA F E

Simone and Jack met while attending the same college, Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Fast forward seven years, the couple was in Golden, Colorado for Jack’s graduate school commencement ceremony from Colorado School of Mines. After receiving his diploma and still fully dressed in his cap and gown attire, Jack got down on one knee and asked Simone to marry him! It was the perfect culmination of ending one journey and starting the next together. The proposal happened to fall on the same day as Simone’s parents’ wedding anniversary, who were already in Denver to celebrate with the couple! Simone and Jack planned a vintage autumn wedding for September 29th.

A P R I VAT E M O M E N T “One of my favorite moments was when we were taking our romantic portraits with our photographer, Meredith. We felt so comfortable with her and it was so fun to have that time right after the ceremony just to ourselves. The Club at Las Campanas was gracious enough to let us use the golf course for our photos, which turned out better than we could have ever imagined! The sunset kept changing at each hole that we stopped at, which gave us so many unique and gorgeous settings. Being able to look back at our wedding photos and see all of the love and emotions from our first moments as a married couple is something I’ll always cherish.”

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Our advice to future couples is to have fun and not stress over the details. We learned that things rarely go as planned, but that you can still have an amazing day even if it looks a little (or a lot) different than you thought it would.”

Jess Nick +

LAS CRUCES

Jess and Nick met while working at a local pizza restaurant in Las Cruces. The two quickly hit it off after a year of working together and spent time treasuring the array of outdoor adventures ranging from hiking to off-roading through the towering mountain peaks of New Mexico. Three and a half years later, Nick planned to propose on a family trip to the Bahamas over Christmas. One evening, Nick asked Jess if she would like to watch the sunset on a small, private beach. The couple jumped in a golf cart and made their way to the sandy destination. As the sun dipped towards the horizon, Nick suggested capturing a photo of Jess in the water facing the coastal shoreline, without thinking a thing she did just that. With Jess admiring the ocean waters, Nick professed he had one more Christmas gift left to give and got down on one knee. Completely surprised, Jess almost splashed Nick with water before truly realizing what was happening. Jess sat down on Nick’s knee and said, “Yes!” Jess and Nick planned a Southwest bohemian wedding for October 3rd.

- REAL WEDDING -

PERSONAL TOUCHES When the wedding takes place at the bride’s childhood home, you can expect it to be full of personal touches. Jess and Nick went above and beyond making sure their special day was a reflection of themselves with elements like the wooden ceremony arch built by family, the groom’s father officiated the wedding, smoked meats were made by the bride’s neighbor for the main dinner course and the cake designed and decorated by the groom’s mother and sister.

Leah + Eric LAS CRUCES

Leah and Eric met while Leah was attending New Mexico State University and Eric was stationed in New Mexico with the Air Force. The pair crossed paths by a chance encounter that would forever change their lives for the better. That fall, Eric moved overseas to Italy and Leah pursued a career in wedding photography in Birmingham, Alabama. Neither made plans to stay in touch, but a long distance relationship blossomed months later. Many Facetime calls, texts, and a handful of trips across the country kept their commitment to one another strong. When Eric received his next assignment, the couple began discussing the possibility of getting married the next time they saw each other. The power of perfect timing prevailed and Eric was given two weeks notice of official clearance to travel stateside for one month. On October 1st, Leah and Eric were reunited, the next day while hiking Soledad Canyon to scope out a location for their vow exchange, Eric got down on one knee and asked Leah to marry him. Eric surprised Leah with a gorgeous engagement ring that he began saving for after their first date. Leah and Eric planned a modern desert wedding for October 5th.

SOMETHING BLUE

In the famous, old English rhyme, the color blue symbolizes fidelity and love’s purity. Leah’s wedding dress is rather serendipitous and holds sweet sentiment. For Leah’s birthday, Eric gifted her a fun blue floral dress, but with the COVID shutdown she had nowhere to wear it. Once their wedding plans came to fruition, Leah had the idea to wear the blue dress as her wedding gown and surprise Eric!

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Keep the engagement season short. The few sessions of premarital counseling we had were key to being emotionally ready for this forever commitment to each other. You won’t regret putting in time and effort, and focusing on the marriage commitment. Someone told us, premarital counseling isn’t a requirement, but the more that you discuss on the engagement side of the vows, the more prepared you will be for what’s to come on the marriage side.”

Jen + Bryan

S A N TA F E Jen and Bryan met on New Year’s Eve in Denver, Colorado. The pair’s paths crossed at a bar while Jen and her friend were waiting on an Uber, they only talked for a few minutes, but Jen immediately recognized something special about him. Coincidentally, Jen moved to Denver from San Francisco six months earlier, and Bryan had recently made his way to the Mile High City from Louisiana. Aware of the chances of running into one another again, Jen handed Bryan her business card. Two days later, Jen opened her email inbox to find a message from Bryan. Two and a half years into dating, Bryan surprised Jen with a trip to Calamigos Guest Ranch and Beach Club in Malibu, where Jen grew up attending summer camp. On their way back to the cottage after dinner, Jen noticed Bryan stalling. Since it was so beautiful and clear outside, Bryan suggested taking photos in front of the avant garde sculptures followed by stargazing. As Jen was examining the moon, Bryan asked her to look at the enormous oak tree standing in a meadow across the property. Alone, just the two of them, Bryan got down on one knee and asked Jen to marry him, and she of course said, “Yes!” Jen and Bryan planned a Southwestern glam wedding for November 2nd at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe. rocky mountain bride new mexico 2021 / rockymountainbride.com

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES “Stay in the moment and enjoy every minute. It’s so easy to be swayed by input and requests from others, but remember your wedding is about your significant other and the love you share. In terms of planning, to quote my wonderful mother, ‘Everything will work out, it always does.’ She’s right. Something will inevitably not go as planned but most of the time it ends up even better. Make sure to breathe and have fun. Not to sound cliché, but it all happens the way it’s supposed to.”

It's truly surreal to look back and think we got married ten years ago and look how far we've come.
