Throughout my involvement in the planning of hundred of weddings over the past decade, I am amazed at how little time couples spend on the most significant component of the wedding... their Vows.. Holli Owen

It has felt like a cruel symbolism to be a wedding planner listening to couples take their vows over the past ten years knowing that statistically more than half of these promises will be broken. Listening to couples exchange their vows made me realize how little time goes into these words, and the true depth of what couples are promising to one another. Listening to couples exchange their vows has struck me to realizing how little time goes into this for most, and also the true depth of what couples are promising to one another. Does each Bride and Groom understand the true meaning and severity of their promises, or are they too caught up in all the hubbub of

“Do couples spend enough time during the planning process on the meaning of their vows?”

planning and anticipated bliss of the wedding day? I have had many couples tell me that they were writing their wedding vows the morning of their wedding day! Without judgement, maybe some of these couples felt centered that morning and had the clarity necessary to express their deepest feelings to their soon-to-be life partner; but some could not find that clarity and instead whipped up some fluffy words to swirl around their partner. I took traditional wedding vows; I thought they were beautiful and were truly the ultimate commitment. What could be more serious than promising your life partner to love them through all the trials life can serve up or until death do us part? But did I truly think through the meaning of what I was actually promising my husband? Do couples spend enough time during the planning process these days reflecting on the meaning of the vows? A dear friend of mine who has been married for 2 years has the most healthy perspective on marriage that I have encountered in all the years I have been involved with weddings. A wise 28, she and her husband attend a weekly couples group that is devoted to helping each other with the trials of marriage that most of us stumble into blindly. My friend is devoted to the work it takes to have a healthy and happy marriage. She said to me a while back that couples have too high of expectations, which at first I tilted my head at, thinking of the fairy tale

expectations I had of my marriage and still have today. The more I contemplate this statement the more buy in I have. It is true that with age and hardship we really do have the opportunity to learn what really matters in life. We are given the chance to understand that nothing good comes easy; it is an overused clichÊ with solid grounding. In reference to marriage my pastor says it takes a village. It is the very reason that we ask our friends and family to share in this day, not just to have witness to our vows but to ask for their love and support, and guidance throughout the marriage. In one of my favorite father daughter’s speeches, the father gave the advice to place a memory in your pocket that you can pull out during a difficult time to draw strength from. I love this, because he was recognizing that marriage is tough. Not to be a Debbie downer on the wedding day, but wedding vows should be a real commitment and promise you are making to the most important person in your life, and one that you intend to keep. They should be some of the very heaviest, intense words ever to be spoken from our mouths. Going into marriage, the rose colored glasses need to be taken off briefly and the seriousness of the adventure ahead need to be given true contemplation by the couple. The values of what marriage means to each partner needs to be discussed. These values should become the foundation for the marriage. Reflecting on every couple that I have assisted in the planning process I have given similar advice in the early stages of the planning process; pick the 2 or 3 things that are most important to you and focus your energy and budget on those. Most couples will choose the location, food and wine, music, or photography. I have never had a couple bring up the vows. So much emphasis is placed on everything but the vows. I think like all exceptional things with weddings this should be the next big trend. Start the planning process with the vows and center your wedding experience on them. I think the way you feel about one another could certainly be creatively expressed throughout the decor and floral choices, the food and music. The wedding day should be an expression of the couple. The vows should be the very essence and foundation of the marriage. 16

brittany + tyler

Brittany, a relations manager at mywedding.com and Tyler, a physician relations manager for HCA HealthONE, met in Fargo, North Dakota. Like their wedding, their love story leading up to the big day was nothing short of amazing. Engaged in front of a sand castle on the beaches of Turks and Caicos then married high atop the Rockies in a private residence ,boasting spectacular views. Using their charm and big hearts to personalize their big day, not a detail was overlooked- from color and theme to Tyler’s mother’s cakepops. From stories to toasts...to dances...to marriage.

aturally Inspired: Red Delicious!

We are fortunate to have the beautiful backdrop of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. So many people have moved here just because they love the thought of being outdoors. Whether it's hiking, skiing, camping, or simply the view from your window, there's nothing like the natural beauty Colorado has to offer. Bringing the outdoors into your wedding day has never been more fun! Why not choose some of your favorite natural elements to build your theme? We've chosen apples as our star. To get you started, we have some simple suggestions to inspire you while planning your unique day!

Your Bouquet: As you are considering your florist, tell them about your plans to incorporate your outdoor element into your wedding. Florists, as any other artist, will jump at the chance to exercise their creativity in new, and exciting ways. Chances are, she will come up with something you never even thought possible. A bouquet carefully decorated with apples is an unexpected twist on this bridal staple. Twigs and branches were added to give a rustic feel that was appropriate to the venue.

What to Wear: Attire is such an important part of your day, and is an opportunity to highlight your style and make a statement. Pops of red shoes on the Bride, and red socks on the Groom add a playful surprise that ties into the color theme.

38

rockymountainbride.com

Inspired Reception Decor: Your florist can help you get very creative here as well. If you are looking for a touch of whimsy, you can have orchard inspired centerpieces. The contrast of the deep red apples, touches of gold, and twisting branches lend authenticity to their outdoor origins. Gold thread was used to hang apples from branches to give the feel of an apple tree. These could be used as centerpieces, or even as a unique way for guests to find their seating. We also placed some beautiful red apples underneath glass while using a barrel as a table base. This could be used as a table to hold your guestbook! The key is to weave your theme throughout your day in unexpected ways. Create surprise elements for your guests to find! rockymountainbride.com

GOLD RUSH

Modern Day Rustic-Vintage: A Style of the West

Photographed and Written by Jeff & Jewels Photography When Bridget from La Boheme Events and I met for the first time, it was obvious that we were meant to be together. Her idea of doing a "GOLD RUSH" themed Styled Shoot made my mind explode! We brainstormed with big eyes, giggles, and a cohesive vision that we knew we just had to make happen. Industrial yet rustic, vintage yet glam, and "Colorado", but unique as "Rustic/Vintage" is all the rage around these parts. We planned this shoot for months. Finding the perfect venue was succeeded when we discovered 2127 Larimer in Denver. Once we had that, all the other elements just fell into place. Every vendor was fabulous to work with and executed our vision perfectly! The shoot was not without challenges. The main one being that we had to postpone the "outdoor portrait" part due to the fact that it snowed the entire day... the ENTIRE day. The stars aligned and we were able to get "Jenna" & "Noah", professionals who had no problem pretending to be husband and wife (Hannah Kimball & Caleb Gardner). rockymountainbride.com

47

It was important to me the photos told a story - the story of Jenna & Noah, traveling cross country by train, "Pikes Peak Or Bust". Their chapel wedding - intimate and romantic. It was important to us all of the details were accurate, if not totally authentic, and they HAD to be perfect! We loved the dress - a Waters & Waters - and the fabric made us think of an antique handkerchief. The western style suit complimented it perfectly. The model’s gold jewelry fancied up as only a first-class ladies’ would. Plum Sage went all out with the flowers including chamomile, lavender, subtle sprays of wheat, deep red roses, and some spray painted thistles! The handle of the bouquet was perfectly wrapped in twine and lace. The details of the table were just as stunning. A reclaimed wood beam ran the length of the table and held the many vessels that were the centerpiece - gold mercury glass, wooden boxes, and gold and glass candle holders. My favorite part was the rock candy in the champagne! The alter was built around draped muslin with dried flower bouquets, a cow skull, wagon wheel, whiskey barrel, and gold bars. The ceremony benches were made by Bridget's husband (La Boheme Events), just for the shoot (thanks Jason!). Gold mica and gold "nuggets" adorned the aisle. Chairished Vintage Rentals, had this fantastic wooden arch to hang things from for the sweets table and late night snack set ups. Goodies from Leaf & Crumb Bakery included 2 kinds of cake pops: milk chocolate and peanut butter, dipped in chocolate, and vanilla bean and fresh strawberry dipped in white chocolate & gold sugar; mini apple strusel pies; vanilla and rooibos mini scones with vanilla glaze; 2 kinds of french macaroons: traditional with mild chocolate granache and butterscotch with marshmallow buttercream; milk chocolate whiskey mousse with chantilly cream shooters; chamomile & thyme caramels; a 3 tiered Earl Grey cake with white chocolate Earl Grey swiss buttercream; and a pumpkin chai cake with cinnamon cream cheese filling covered in GOLD!

Ways To Keep Your Summer GLOW All Winter Long!

Taylor Chamberlain & Erika Oltmann

With fall leaves, football and the return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte, one thing is certain, winter will be here before you know it! For Rocky Mountain Brides planning their wedding in the next 6 months, it is important to keep the summer glow as long as possible! Here are six snow-proof ways to keep that glow all winter long, leaving you sun-kissed and ready to say “I Do!”

“Keep your summer mindset all winter long with these tips!"

1. Stay Active Don’t let the snow stop you from staying fit! Winter is a great time to get involved with indoor exercise classes designed to keep your body wedding dress ready! Core Power Yoga has studios all over Colorado, and provides a wide range of classes from Beginners’ Yoga to Hot Power Fusion. The Body Barre is a ballet bar and dance-inspired fitness studio exclusive to Colorado. 2. Winter-Ready Locks Keep your hair looking summer fresh with these great tips from Kate Allen, Lead Stylist and GM at Fluff*Bar Denver! Combat the Static - static is such a pain during the winter season. It's caused by a lack of moisture in the air and most women believe that hairspray will calm it down and tame their locks. The opposite is actually true... the hairspray dries it out even more and while a few sprays might tame your tresses for about an hour, you'll be back to frizzy flyaway strands in no time. For clients who have fine hair (the most susceptible hair type to static), I always recommend bringing a travel size styling lotion with them in their bags wherever they go. They put some on in the morning when they style and then by about lunch time when it's starting to dry up and static is becoming a problem again, they can just emulsify some lotion in their hands and run it through. Problem solved! I recommend Kevin Murphy's Anti Gravity Styling Lotion.

Deep Condition - A much better way to prep your hair for the winter (and much more long-term) is to invest in a good deep conditioner. The summer sun has damaged and dried out your hair and your locks need some extra love. Using a deep conditioner is so simple - add it to your shower routine about once a week for 15 minutes. I recommend Kevin Murphy's Young Again Masque. Your hair will literally be renewed with missing proteins that have been bleached and heat styled out of your hai.

3. Faux Glow

3

Boulder-based makeup company, Alchemy Mineral Blends, offers a line of mineral-based products that are 100 percent natural and free of harmful perfumes and dyes. To protect your summer glow, try Alchemy’s SPF 26 Loose Mineral Foundation; it will protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, as well as pollutants. Alchemy’s Goddess Glow is a brush-on shimmer that can be applied to the face and body to provide that sunkissed look all year round! To view the complete collection, as well as tips and tricks from the pros, visit alchemymineralblends.com.

4. Summer State of Mind Put a new perspective on snowy days by treating them like the summer sun is shining! Everyone enjoys a great book by the pool, and the same vibe can be found by sitting in your favorite nook, curled up with some apple cider and your kindle on a snowy Saturday. If that doesn’t work, plan a picnic indoors! Throw a cozy blanket on the living room floor, and bring out the bubbly and your favorite picnic foods for the perfect ant-free date! Finally, just because it’s cold doesn’t mean your can’t still enjoy ice cream! Jazz up

vanilla with baked apple slices. To make for 2, just toss 1 cored and sliced apple, with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and a dash of cinnamon, and bake at 375 degrees until soft – about 40 minutes.

5. Eating Healthy Summer and the abundance of neighborhood Farmer’s Markets might be over, but fresh, Colorado-grown produce is not! According to Heather Cherry, Registered Dietitian at www.strengthfromwithin.net, you should focus on in-season Vegetables, such as Acorn and Winter Squash that are packed with skin loving Vitamin A. Fresh summer fruits can be replaced with frozen fruits. They provide all the same health benefits because they are picked when they are ripe, and frozen immediately, which locks in their nutritional value. Furthermore, Heather recommends upping your Omega 3 by eating more Salmon, Halibut, and Trout, which has wonderful antiinflammatory aspects, and does wonders for your youthful glow. To find fresh, and in-season foods, try the online resource, Colorado Local First, for all things local and where to buy them! Find a local market near you at: www.coloradolocalfirst.com.

6. Fresh Face For a natural way to keep your face moist and healthy in the cold winter winds, try one of Denver Botanic Gardens’ All Natural Skin Care Classes. In one three-hour class, you’ll learn to create natural cleansers, moisturizers and more to help banish blemishes and wrinkles. You’ll also take home all the products you make, as well as the recipes to re-create your favorites at home. Visit www.botanicgardens.org to sign up for the next class. Looking to be pampered while renewing your skin? Spa at St Julien in Boulder offers an exclusive Ultimate Oxygen Facial, aimed at repairing damage and restoring resiliency and suppleness. Rustic Luxury

The Coz y Mountain Lifestyle Portrayed

Written by Marisa Heidt of Feather & Twig Images by Kristina Lynn Photography & Design

When photographer, Kristina, of Kristina Lynn Photography & Design, and I got together to discuss collaborating on a styled shoot, we brainstormed two ideas; one being, how to tie in a unique theme that would still speak to the Colorado lifestyle. Or, as the PR Coordinator of Todd Reed Jewelry, Naomi, summed it up as "Rustic Luxury". We knew we wanted a hunting theme, but felt like camo and blaze orange heels for the bride would be going a little too far. We decided to take the formality of traditional English hunting and interpret it to more of a Colorado luxe style. We chose an outstanding venue, the Evergreen Lake House, as we were entranced by its location, the grand log structure, and the large stone fireplace. Our natural color scheme with browns, tans, pops of deep reds, white, and mossy green florals truly added a sense of regality. We added an animal mount above the mantle with some trophies, pheasant feather, LED candles, and antler candelabras. The crackling fireplace provided the perfect backdrop for plush red velvet chairs, the rustic dining table made of old growth reclaimed wood, a full place setting with real silver flatware, gold-rimmed goblets, and the other star of the show; the off center, centerpiece – an antler chandelier overflowing with foliage greens, arranged florals, and red berries strewn throughout. Our groom donned an Orvis pub jacket, khakis, sweater, and solid red tie with an Ivy cap; he more than complimented the gorgeous bride in her hand made silk gown with patchwork lace, and an original love poem (written specifically for this dress) appliqué down the right side of the over coat. The sleeveless dress proved to be the perfect style for a toasty indoor reception. For outdoor scenes, the bride’s hand-knitted opera fingerless gloves and shawl added the perfect accent and warmth for our bride. The organic jewelry topped off the rustic luxury we were going for, and Todd Reed Jewelry went above and beyond with their unique and jaw-dropping accessories. Add in a handmade hairpiece for the bride’s special “something new”.

The invitation set the tone of the event from the beginning, with its leather accents, subtle wood grain, and pops of red pattern; it made for a perfect balance of feminine and masculine. You can see the repeated patterns throughout the table settings; in the leather placemats, subtle wood grain patterned napkins, touches of red, and a dash of gold in the simple but classy dishes and goblets. makeover Juli Rathke

We know you love a good makeover. But this one has a little twist to it. We took three amazing mountain men and caught up with them in their ideal element. Then, we took them out of their comfort zone, pampered them, took them shopping and dressed them up to impress. We paraded around Bozeman, Jackson Hole and Denver with our madeover men and a few heads did turn. The guys selected were picked by our readers and social media followers and are not real models. Just had to say that because they did such an amazing job... and remember a little goes a long way!

Why Wear a Boutonnière? Why should a man wear a flower on his lapel, especially when he is likely to be the only fellow sporting one? I’ll give you three reasons: 1. It’s a great conversation starter – I guarantee someone will ask about it; the key is to be confident as to why you are wearing it. If a compliment is given, simply say thank you, and then move on with the conversation unless your conversation partner(s) wishes to dwell on it. Nothing sours a conversation more than a man who displays arrogance and who talks about himself too much – the flower in your lapel should be like a spark….a conversation starter, not the subject of the conversation. 2. You have something to give – How many times have you spent a wonderful evening with a woman you just met, and at the end of the night the only thing you can give her is your business card? Try leaving her with something a bit more unique and memorable. Or perhaps you want to make your aunt’s 70th birthday even more special – there are few things nicer to receive than a sincere showing of love accompanied by a flower. 3. It shows you pay attention to details – When wearing a boutonniere, it’s about realizing and showing that the little things matter.

How to Choose the Flower for Your Jacket’s Lapel First the flower should fit the occasion – simple white or red blooms for formal occasions, while for less formal occasions more colorful and exotic flowers are fine. Second, the

boutonniere should be coordinated with the clothing you are wearing. If in doubt, a simple white bloom, like a white pocket square, is always a safe bet. And speaking of pocket squares, you are permitted to wear a boutonniere with a pocket square, although a boutonniere by itself can stand in for a pocket square. The rule here is balance; avoid too much of a good thing by muting down the color of your square or wearing a white pocket handkerchief. The final factor in selecting a boutonniere flower is how long you plan on wearing it – many flowers will wilt after a few hours in the heat and without water, so if you are looking for something that will last all day in the West Texas heat consider consulting a florist. The Carnation Boutonniere – Simple, affordable, easy to find; of all the flowers a man can choose for his boutonniere, the carnation is perhaps the most versatile and easiest to pull off. White is always acceptable, although it is best suited to more formal occasions. Red is a close second, and can bring a dash of color to a black tie outfit or dress up a sport jacket and jeans. I personally prefer miniature carnations; however, a normal bloom that hasn’t fully opened works well. The only downside to a carnation is that it will begin to droop after a day of wearing, so wear it fresh or if for a long day consider having it professionally prepared by a florist. The Rose Boutonniere – About as easy to find as carnations, roses are more complicated to wear as they are substantially larger and must be free from imperfections. To the general public, they are considered the most formal flower, and they are perfect choices

when celebrating love at either a wedding or anniversary. Rose boutonnieres look best when they are professionally prepared as then they can be permanently tilted and even hydrated with a tiny water stop. If you head down this route ensure your jacket lapel can support the weight. Other Flower Options – Gardenia, Lily of the Valley, Sweet William, Orchids, Hyacinths, Daisies, and Lilacs are all excellent choices. You may have to special order these, but the reward is that you’ll have a unique and beautiful companion. Remember that flowers have meanings and that these meanings change across cultures. Carnations are one of the most common boutonniere flowers in the United States, are the national flower of Spain, and show respect in Korea. In France however, carnations are a common funeral flower and considered unlucky outside of this setting.

Remember Wear It with Confidence – Do not be afraid to be an individual. Wear a boutonniere because you want to. Pay Attention to Proportion – If you’re a small man, wear small flowers. If you’re a large man, consider something that is more befitting your size. Never Upstage the Ladies – A boutonniere is a single flower or a small collection of tiny blooms; never wear something unwieldy. What do you like most about being a wedding florist in Colorado? I love the Colorado weather, seasons and the variety of wedding locations available! We have everything from green meadows, snow covered hills, rustic barns to breathtaking ballrooms. Add in the changing seasons and diverse weather and the result is a never ending ability to be creative with floral. The truly endless possibilities keep me from being tied to one wedding style and allow me to be continuously challenged while staying on top of my game!

What is your favorite type of arrangement to make and why? The Bridal Bouquet. I love the importance of this bouquet and significance of each bloom that goes into it. I have enjoyed learning over the years what each flower brings to the bouquet and feel strongly that these are the most important flowers of a Bride's life. The Bridal Bouquet should be

just as she has envisioned it and each bloom should be perfect.

What is the most important information that clients can give you that ensures their flowers are perfect for their big day? Creative freedom! I love when clients show a few photos, offer their color palette, a short list of floral likes and dislikes, and then let us take care of the rest. You can't control what nature creates, so having a little bit of leeway allows us to choose the very best and most amazing flowers available that day.

What can a bride do with flowers to add the most impact to their wedding? I suggest that couples choose a few areas to decorate with really impactful florals rather than attempt to decorate every space with smaller arrangements. This is easily done by focusing on the areas that will be heavily photographed, such as the ceremony or the head table.

What are great ways to get the most out a floral budget? Don't be afraid to use less costly blooms to bulk up your arrangements. You can still show off some amazing garden roses, but sneak in a few mums, hydrangea, and accent with interesting foliage. Also, being sure to prioritize what your non-negotiables are and what items you can't do without will help ensure you get the look you're after within your budget.

Just go with it! No one will care or remember what color your linens were,

APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR OUT:

• • • • • • • • •

Buy a binder, the best place to hold ideas, contracts and other info, and keep it nearby -- you never know when inspiration will strike! Make a guest list, and start collecting snail-mail and email addresses. Hammer out a budget -- figure out where you can cut back and where you want to splurge. Decide on a destination. Unsure? Talk to a travel agent or hit the internet. Research the marriage requirements in your chosen destination. Look into the potential wedding and reception sites, hotels and wedding planners in your locale. Book your engagement photo session. Start shopping for your gown, taking into consideration the ceremony site and the destination's climate. Choose your maid of honor, best man and other attendants. Design a wedding website. Add links to the tourism board, hotel and venues so your guests can have important info and get excited about where they're going.

SIX TO NINE MONTHS OUT:

• • •

• • • • •

Set the date, reserve your site and pick your planner. Send out your save-the-dates with your website address. Select vendors, including caterer, photographer, florist, and band or DJ. Get recommendations from your hotel or planner, and check references from past clients. Choose an officiant, and start planning the service. Research activities and tours available in your locale, and plan at least one group option per day. Order your gown, and select attendants' dresses. Investigate any ethnic customs or cultural traditions you might want to incorporate into your event. Register for gifts or create a honeymoon registry.

FOUR TO SIX MONTHS OUT:

• • • •

• • • 96

Order your wedding rings. Obtain your passports and visas, and if necessary, get any needed blood tests or vaccinations. Arrange any rental needs like chair covers and sound equipment. Order your wedding invitations and thank-you cards, plus any special stationery (welcome letters, menus, maps, itineraries, signs). Buy or reserve wedding duds for the groom and wedding party. Buy gifts for your attendants and family members, and start composing your thank-you notes to them. Book accommodations and airfare for your wedding and honeymoon.

rockymountainbride.com

• •

Make hair, makeup and spa appointments for you and your 'maids. Shop for wedding accessories (shoes, jewelry, headpiece, lingerie), resort wear, decor and other goods (cake topper, guest book, ring pillow).

TWO TO FOUR MONTHS OUT:

• •

Arrange and confirm all of your group activities, including transportation for off site excursions. Finalize details with your vendors, including menus, photo poses and locations, floral specifics and special songs -- and get everything in writing.

Make or order the guest favors and welcome-bag items.

ONE TO TWO MONTHS OUT:

• • • •

Send out your formal invites six to eight weeks before the big day; include a program of scheduled events, plus dress code, if applicable. Arrange for when and how welcome-bag items and decor should be delivered to your hotel. Have your final gown fitting, complete with lingerie and accessories. Assign wedding-weekend tasks to trusted friends and family members. Write your vows.

TWO WEEKS OUT:

• •

Review all the details you agreed on with your planner, caterer, photographer, videographer, florist, musicians and any other vendors involved in the wedding events. Confirm your travel bookings. Put together a seating chart, if needed, and make place cards.

ON ARRIVAL:

• • • •

Confirm details with your planner and officiant. Apply for a marriage license. Inspect ceremony and reception sites. Assemble or approve welcome bags, and have them delivered to guests' rooms before they arrive.

THE WEDDING DAY:

Forget about all the planning and focus on having a blast!
