BRECKENRIDGE WEDDINGS

Packing for the event! by Julie Meehan Fee, Telluride Unveiled Event Planners

Imagine – you’re barefoot with excited chatter all around you. You’re not at a resort though, you’re at the airport, and right now, a gentleman is apologetically confiscating your expensive foundation, moisturizer, or can’t-live-without hair product because it is larger than 3.4 ounces. It happens to everyone, but you don’t want it to happen while you are traveling to your wedding! 14

“You should carry your wedding dress on the plane!”

Traveling for your Rocky Mountain destination wedding takes as much planning as the wedding itself, and it is important to prepare for everything so that once you arrive, you are relaxed and ready to spend an amazing few days with friends and family. The mountains are breathtakingly gorgeous but the remote destinations are not the best locations to find specific items that you may forget to bring. The weather in the mountains changes quite a bit throughout the day in the summer months. Keep in mind that the days are hot, but the nights are cool. Make sure that a cardigan, wrap or jacket figure into your evening outfits. Pack several types of shoes - sneakers, ballet flats, flip flops, and several heels. Decide which shoes you will be wearing during the ceremony and rehearsal if it is outside, and how you will walk if the ground is uneven or wet. Generally, it rains a bit each day in the summer, and so a rain jacket and perhaps even a pair of rain boots are essential. Make sure that you have the appropriate undergarments for all of your outfits. More than likely, the destination won’t have the perfect solution, and you will waste an entire day looking for a bra that suits a particular dress. Bring a few extras – our mountain destinations have wonderful boutiques, and it is possible that you may even find something that you want to wear over the week that you weren’t planning on.

the theme

Chalk board signs directed guests to the chair lift following the

chapel ceremony. The chalk boards were to celebrate Kelly’s love for teaching.

the cake

The couple had a lovely wedding cake with a silly skier’s cake toppe.

The groom's cake was of a mountain, celebrating the couples love for the mountains and skiing. Later in the evening the guests were surprised and treated to a chocolate fountain, celebrating their love for chocolate.

the ceremony

The couple planned a very personal ceremony. They not only

wrote their own vows, but they also had a special message for each other that they read for the first time during the ceremony. There wasn't a dry eye anywhere.

the reception

The reception was held at the Spruce Saddle in Beaver Creek.

The tables and decor were immaculately set in golds, purples, whites with fine linens. There were no place cards, as the bride and groom wanted the family and friends to enjoy their family members and sit where ever they wished.

Inspiration : T

he Parkside Mansion in Denver, Colorado sets the backdrop for this romantic 1920s-inspired shoot. With the 2013 release of The Great Gatsby just around the corner, Coloradobased blog, One Hitched Lane, brought A Vintage Affair Rentals, Tess Pace Photography, Bare Root Flora, and several other Colorado wedding professionals together to bring the vision of this shoot to life.

In lieu of the 2013 release of The Great Gatsby, One Hitched Lane reached out to collaborate on a 1920s-inspired wedding shoot. The 1920s were a golden age in American history and the parties of the Jazz Age, as the era is known, were glamorous. We chose a unique color scheme of green, pink, gold, and ivory for the shoot because we felt it captured the luxe and romanticism of the Jazz Age - with a modern twist. From there, it was all in the details: flowing drinks (even under Prohibition!), dramatic bow ties, extravagant hats and headpieces, vintage cars, soft & romantic flowers, letterpress invitations, fantastic dresses, flapper-style hair, whiskey tables, and more.

We wanted a soft, romantic look to the florals, and texture is one of our signature elements. So we paired gorgeous peonies, dahlia, roses and ranunculus with lots of lush and textural eucalyptus, camellia, and olive foliage, and privet and pepper berries. Anemone, veronica, Queen Anne's lace, and scabiosa gave the pieces the loose, draped feel we were going for.

The stately Colonial Revival known to many as the Parkside Mansion, is again available as a Denver rental venue. Once the crown jewel of the beautiful City Park Development Plan and Parkside Subdivision, dating back to 1869, the Parkside keeps a watchful eye over business meetings, celebrations and NonProfit events and has worn many hats since being built in 1905 by Colorado Lumber Baron, Charles Daniel McPhee and his business partner John J. Ode

the

Groomzilla by Holli Owen

For anyone that has been involved in the wedding planning business for over a decade, then you too have been exposed to a paradigm shift; long gone are the days of the wedding planning being handled exclusively by the bride and her mother.

44

rockymountainbride.com

"But I thought you liked liver and onions."

A fascination with weddings and planning, thanks in part to reality television, has created a new version of grooms who are ‘oh so’ heavily involved. One of my besties and I often jokingly refer to her husband as her 'blushing bride', in remembrance of a chair lift ride where he gushed about his opulent dreams and ideas for their wedding day, like a parade in progression. His passionate vision completely transcribed to me like a Hemingway novel, included getting married at 12,200 feet, cocktailing, and hosting a reception at a little ski chalet at the top of the ski resort here in Telluride—which (to our surprise) has since become a signature intimate wedding venue. My dear friend took the back seat and let him ‘go with it’ maintaining poise and grace, coupled with a lot of giggles. This was our personal intro to the ‘groomzilla’. If there is not a new reality show pilot in production in Hollywood on ‘The Rise of the Groomzilla’, believe me it is soon to be in the making and will rival the wedding networks favorites such as the long standing ‘Bridezilla’ and ‘Say Yes to the Dress’. A recent, unprecedented ‘groomzilla’ experience involved an hour-long phone conversation with one of our casted stars, discussing mountain dress code. Half way through this conversation it became stingily clear to me that this guy had absolutely no concept of his soon-to-be wife’s vision of their big day. Today grooms are more hands on than ever before, so much so there are increasing instances of having very little contact with the bride until the actual wedding day. It is not uncommon that both partners are working and career driven. While pulling equal weight with the economic vitality of their households it has become common that the bride is under significantly more career stress. The bride may be in a PhD program or tied up writing a thesis, and so the planning of the wedding falls naturally on her grooms shoulders.

the weekend

The couple enjoyed being able to see everyone that was there

and spend time with them throughout the weekend (including our dogs!) because they didn’t over schedule. Everyone got to do their own thing but also have a lot of joint time to hang out. It was also the weekend of Jazz Festival so that was definitely an added bonus!

the ceremony

The couple planned a very personal ceremony. They decided

to write their own vows and they wed at the top of the San Sophia Overlook atop the Telluride ski mountain. The views were beyond picturesque, they were majestic.

the party

The couple had ninety friends and family in attendance on that sunny

day in Telluride. They also included 3 men of honor, 5 groomsmen, 1 maid of honor, 2 matrons of honor, 5 bridesmaids, 2 ushers, 1 flower girl and 1 reader to complete the wedding party.

the menu

hey served caviar and a variety of hors d’oeuvres, including fried

the cake

the cake was a buttercream and coconut cream cake with

buttercream icing. It was three-tiered and had mountains on the sides of it. The cake rested it on a stand that they had made from an old tree that had the wedding date branded into it.

was to "Bring it on Home" by Sam Cooke because the couple

and I promise you will look beautiful!

My number one goal for every session is to

Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to be in the wedding industry? Back in 2009 one of our brides approached us about doing a boudoir session. She wanted a gift she could give her husband the night before the wedding. At that point none of our brides were asking about boudoir sessions. We realized boudoir photography was very popular in other wedding markets so we jumped at the chance to embark on a new project. My husband and I wanted to push the limits of our photography and be inspired by new things. The first day shooting boudoir changed our business in ways we never would have thought. Shortly after the first session we launched boudoir photography as part of our photography services. Over the years we experimented with different styles and lighting. In the end, I found a true passion for wanting to make women feel and look beautiful. Since then I have been fortunate enough to pursue boudoir photography full-time.

dinner at the lake

{diy}

Megan Erickson Images: Tiffany Jahangiri Photography

Lake view venues can be few and far between when it comes to mountain wedding locations. So when you have the chance to set up that lakeside groom's dinner or reception you will want to pull out all the stops. Go all out with boats, canoes, tiki lights, s'mores, campfires, unique birch bark candles and more. Here are a few inspirations from one of our Rocky Mountain Brides.

Heading to the lake for your groom's dinner or reception? Here are some easy DIY ideas!

66

rockymountainbride.com

DIY dinner at the lake 1

Inspiration. A heart cut into a birch tree with the bride and

6

groom’s initials. Carry this theme throughout the entire event, from invitations to place settings. To create a magical setting, lighting is key. Candles floating in mason jars on the tables and hanging from the birch tree inside the tent create a romantic mood. Natural Design Elements: Birch, moss, burlap, and rocks with mason jars/mugs, palm leaf plates, and galvanized metal. Repeat use of elements throughout the event.

2

Birch: gather birch bark, birch logs, and branches from downed trees.

7

Harvest live moss in the woods for the moss topiaries. Burlap can be bought by the bolt depending on how much you need.

xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox 1. Place Settings: Designate seating by crafting “place cards” of slices of birch branches customized with names. Drill holes to the right and left of each names and tie around Mason jar mugs with threads unraveled from burlap.

3

To compliment the natural theme, use biodegradable palm leaf plates. Each one is uniquely beautiful.

8

For individual s’mores, package two graham cracker halves, one-half Hersey’s chocolate bar, and two marshmallows poked on wooded kabob skewer in a small twist-tied cellophane bag, found at most craft stores; lay across each plate.

2. For roasting marshmallows, make tabletop campfires by placing a can of Sterno gel fuel in a small, galvanized pail topped with river rocks. Use them as table numbers by

4

labeling with numbers.

9

3. The invitations were hand crafted with layers of card stock, frayed burlap and vellum embellished with wood-burned initials on a birch bark heart, tied on with burlap string.

4. Create romantic tabletop lighting by floating candles in various sized mason jars. River rock in the bottom on the Mason jars add interest.

5

10

5. Surround the head table around a birch tree or bring one in. Use a 5-gallon bucket for water and tree stand. Tie the tree to the tent pole using jute twine. Burlap table runners are easily made my measuring each table width and length. Cut runners to size minus 4” from width and length, fray edges and center runners on tables. Save the pulled threads for use on the invitations and mugs.

A color book wedding reception program adds some fun elements for the kids as well!

6. For the buffet table centerpiece, cut birch logs of various heights and carve the same heart and initials into the bark as on the invitation. Tie the logs together with jute twine to stabilize.

7. Continue the romantic lighting by making hanging Mason jar lights. Wrap jute twine around and under the jar treads and attach wire hangers, simply bent and twisted from silver wire from the hardware store. It is important to use metal wire for the hangers as other materials could be a fire hazard. Float candles in water and hang from the birch tree at various heights.

8. Use various size Mason jars for the tabletop floating candles. Roasted nuts for the bar top can be labeled with birch branch slices tied on with burlap string like the mugs.

9. Use a canoe for bottled beverages on ice. Charming!

10. Two types of centerpieces were made. Moss topiary centerpieces were hand crafted with fresh moss harvested from the woods. First, prepare the base. Use birch-covered vases weighted with rocks and filled with Plaster of Paris to weight the bottom to keep it from toppling. Insert a few small bundled birch branches BEFORE the plaster sets. Once it sets, cut branches to desired height plus a few inches and cut them at an angle. Top the branches with an 8” green foam ball by stabbing the foam ball down onto the branches. Cover the foam ball with fresh moss using u-shaped pins or wire bent into a ‘U’ shape.

The

Spa

at

Ranch

by Juli Rathke

When we drove through the gates of The Lodge & destination wedding locales in the country, and Spa at Brush Creek Ranch just north of Steamboat we have seen a lot of them. An authentic Western Springs near Saratoga, Wyoming, we knew we were experience, where impeccable service, understated in for an experience like no other. This 15,000-acre luxury and endless activities come together to create private getaway unfolds as one of the most unique memories as vast as their grand western skies.

"An allinclusive boutique resort like no other!"

Set deep in the heart of Wyoming’s Sierra Madre range, The Lodge & Spa at Brush Creek Ranch is an all-inclusive boutique resort exclusively designed for discretionary travelers, corporate group retreats, family escapes and destination weddings. The Ranch features a stately 38,000-square foot lodge, a luxury spa, a finely appointed collection of cabins suites & residences, lodge rooms, and a plentitude of authentic outdoor adventures in every season, including unparallel Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing. With unique, all-inclusive format, all lodging, food, premium beverages, and a wide assortment of activities are all included in your stay. Bringing my family was the best thing I could have done to 'test' the experience one would have at an event on this property. We were shown to our rooms for the night and invited to the Saloon where all the adults had sat down outside for some live music that evening. We didn't realize we were in for the time of our lives! The next morning at breakfast (which was at a banquet table in the main lodge with made-to-order service) we were greeted by the owners, and my kids were greeted by "kid wranglers" asking them what they wanted to do that day. The staff already knew each of our names and the activity list was displayed for each of us to sign up for any myriad of things. Truly amazing! The activities varied from shooting, riding horses, yoga, biking, hiking, fishing, live music (only the top performers will do like Martina McBride), to indoor recreation complete with simulated golf, rock climbing wall and a full basketball court. At that point we realized that this Ranch left no stone unturned when it came to rolling up your sleeves and diving right in. That day we met Zach, Director of Operations for the Ranch. Are groom's cakes just a phase? Maybe, maybe not. We shopped around a bit and it seems like this fad is sticking around for awhile, as the guys like to showcase their unique likes through cake. Here are a few fun ones for inspiration.

and for the gossip girl

{trending}

J Audrey Nelson

Whether or not you are a fan of the teenage drama-rama 'Gossip Girl', no one can deny the impact the CW hit has had on fashion. For six seasons every episode has set trends and allowed us all to dream of having a closet on the Upper East Side, filled with labels and over the top "everyday" wear. The series finale did not disappoint, with both leading ladies getting married in bold, nontraditional gowns. Blair chose a gorgeous spring 2012 Elie Saab Couture gown. The long sleeved dress in powder blue was on trend, sexy and sleek with stunning embellishments. Flash forward five years and it's Serenas turn to walk down the isle in a gold and white Georges Chakra Couture gown. This dress is larger than life with a full tulle skirt, low back and a playful metallic design. But is it fashion forward? I'm not sold. Who wore it better? Like Rocky Mountain Bride on facebook and tell us what you think! I vote Blair! Photos courtesy of Red Carpet Fashion Awards

wedding planning checklist APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR OUT:

• • • • • • • • •

Buy a binder, the best place to hold ideas, contracts and other info, and keep it nearby -- you never know when inspiration will strike! Make a guest list, and start collecting snail-mail and email addresses. Hammer out a budget -- figure out where you can cut back and where you want to splurge. Decide on a destination. Unsure? Talk to a travel agent or hit the internet. Research the marriage requirements in your chosen destination. Look into the potential wedding and reception sites, hotels and wedding planners in your locale. Book your engagement photo session. Start shopping for your gown, taking into consideration the ceremony site and the destination's climate. Choose your maid of honor, best man and other attendants. Design a wedding website. Add links to the tourism board, hotel and venues so your guests can have important info and get excited about where they're going.

SIX TO NINE MONTHS OUT:

• • •

• • • • •

Set the date, reserve your site and pick your planner. Send out your save-the-dates with your website address. Select vendors, including caterer, photographer, florist, and band or DJ. Get recommendations from your hotel or planner, and check references from past clients. Choose an officiant, and start planning the service. Research activities and tours available in your locale, and plan at least one group option per day. Order your gown, and select attendants' dresses. Investigate any ethnic customs or cultural traditions you might want to incorporate into your event. Register for gifts or create a honeymoon registry.

FOUR TO SIX MONTHS OUT:

• • • •

• • • 88

Order your wedding rings. Obtain your passports and visas, and if necessary, get any needed blood tests or vaccinations. Arrange any rental needs like chair covers and sound equipment. Order your wedding invitations and thank-you cards, plus any special stationery (welcome letters, menus, maps, itineraries, signs). Buy or reserve wedding duds for the groom and wedding party. Buy gifts for your attendants and family members, and start composing your thank-you notes to them. Book accommodations and airfare for your wedding and honeymoon.

rockymountainbride.com

• •

Make hair, makeup and spa appointments for you and your 'maids. Shop for wedding accessories (shoes, jewelry, headpiece, lingerie), resort wear, decor and other goods (cake topper, guest book, ring pillow).

TWO TO FOUR MONTHS OUT:

• •

Arrange and confirm all of your group activities, including transportation for off site excursions. Finalize details with your vendors, including menus, photo poses and locations, floral specifics and special songs -- and get everything in writing.

Make or order the guest favors and welcome-bag items.

ONE TO TWO MONTHS OUT:

• • • •

Send out your formal invites six to eight weeks before the big day; include a program of scheduled events, plus dress code, if applicable. Arrange for when and how welcome-bag items and decor should be delivered to your hotel. Have your final gown fitting, complete with lingerie and accessories. Assign wedding-weekend tasks to trusted friends and family members. Write your vows.

TWO WEEKS OUT:

• •

Review all the details you agreed on with your planner, caterer, photographer, videographer, florist, musicians and any other vendors involved in the wedding events. Confirm your travel bookings. Put together a seating chart, if needed, and make place cards.

ON ARRIVAL:

• • • •

Confirm details with your planner and officiant. Apply for a marriage license. Inspect ceremony and reception sites. Assemble or approve welcome bags, and have them delivered to guests' rooms before they arrive.

THE WEDDING DAY:

Forget about all the planning and focus on having a blast!
