Rosemont College Online Magazine May 2020

A Warm Rosemont Welcome to Dr. Boyers! On June 1, Dr. Jayson Boyers will join Rosemont College as our 14th President, as President Sharon Latchaw Hirsh retires. Please join the Rosemont Community by sharing a brief greeting to welcome him to Pennsylvania. Click Here for more information Most recently serving as President of Cleary University in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Boyers was the Vice President and Managing Director of Continuing Professional Studies (National Online Division) for Champlain College in Vermont. In 2017, he earned a Doctor of Education in Interdisciplinary Leadership at Creighton University. He has a Master of Leadership Development degree in Organizational Leadership from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies from the University of Indianapolis. Read more about Dr Boyers in the Spring 2020 edition of Rosemont Magazine.

Dear Members of the Rosemont College Community, I am writing today to say good-bye and to thank you. Over the past several weeks, I have surprised myself by being much more reflective about the past fourteen years than I ever thought I would be. Realizing now that I had agreed to step in under tragic circumstances within 24 hours of being contacted by the Executive Committee, I have to admit that it was quite an amazing first couple of months. And now I am leaving in the middle of a pandemic! But it was all that went on in between that mattered most to me. I have wonderful memories of my time as President: all of the opportunities to get to know so many of you, faculty and staff, students, and alumnae and alumni, all of the games, performances, and presentations that I was able to watch, and enjoy, and all of the challenges that we faced, and got through, together. And, as I have said before, I am pleased to be handing over the college to an experienced leader, Dr. Jayson Boyers, who was already working in May to establish a plan for our phased-in reopening in cooperation with the Governor’s mandated phases. Rosemont will be in good hands. I never anticipated this job, but I feel as though I have been blessed by the opportunity to serve as President of my alma mater. I will be always enormously thankful for your support of the college, and of me. Please also know that I will be coming back to the college and to campus – at least for my 50th Reunion next June! With great gratitude, Sharon

Our instructors include retired Rosemont faculty members as well as scholars and experts from the greater Philadelphia community. The Forum is open to adults of any age. CAMPUS NEWS During this unprecedented time, Rosemont College remains open for business with employees and faculty fully accessible and working from home as many activities and operations have moved to virtual formats. As we have done since the campus closure began in mid-March, we will continue to keep all members of the Rosemont community informed by email and by posting here: rosemont.edu/covid-19/. Rosemont College remains in the “Red” phase until at least June 4th under Governor Wolf’s Process to Reopen Pennsylvania. Rosemont will align our reopening with the governor’s plan. When President-Elect Boyers assumes office on June 1st, unveiling the plan for reopening the College will be among his top priorities. Dr. Boyers will continue to work closely with the Rosemont Taskforce for Reopening and monitor the governor’s plan so that the College opens in the safest manner as possible and in accordance with CDC guidelines. We encourage you to check the Rosemont website frequently in the coming weeks for updates.

A Fond Farewell To Rosemont’s Beloved Sister Jeanne Click Here to Read Sister Jeanne’s Prayer to End Coronavirus. Campus Ministry Update: Just as courses transitioned online, Campus Ministry moved activities to a virtual format this semester to continue ministering to the Rosemont community. “When campus closed, the Mission and Ministry team felt that students should know that they still and always have a home in Campus Ministry, so we adapted as quickly as possible,” said Gina Ingiosi, Director of Campus Ministry. “We worked very hard to bring as many of our activities and events to the dispersed Rosemont community as possible, and we’re grateful to have had the chance to continue to build accessible and inclusive fellowship.” Below are a few of the many ways the Campus Ministry team continued interactions with the Rosemont community: • Converted Lenten Communion services and Sunday Mass into reflections posted on social media • Provided Campus Ministry Leaders with materials for a self-guided retreat • Converted the Junior Class Blessing and rose distribution to a more accessible, asynchronous blessing for email • Created an Earth Day celebration video in collaboration with the Rosegrow Student Lead Environmental Action Coalition • Provided seniors with materials for a self-guided retreat and held a post-retreat reflection

Sr. Jeanne Hatch, Vice President for Mission, will retire on June 30 after 16 years at Rosemont. You may have seen her in her Campus Ministry office, around campus at the numerous events she attends, or even taking to the sky on the zip line as our own “Flying Nun” at the annual Oktoberfest celebration. Sr. Jeanne has overseen hundreds of liturgies, planned dozens of service trips and retreats, organized many Heritage and Founders’ weeks, and educated students, faculty, and staff members about Cornelia Connelly and her educational philosophy. In addition, Sr. Jeanne established the Mission in Action Committee, serving as its Chair, helped to establish the protocols for weddings in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, served as the Chair of the Safety Committee, and served as the Co-Chair of the Commission on the Legacy of Slavery at Rosemont College. You can read more about Sr. Jeanne in a recent Rosemont College profile piece by clicking here. View photos of Sr. Jeanne during her time at Rosemont. Watch your emails for a virtual farewell gathering! We all thank her for her dedication to the College and wish her a happy retirement!

Rosemont Class of 2020 The class of 2020 will go down in Rosemont History. For the first time, a traditional commencement ceremony did not take place on Rosemont’s campus due to the state mandated stay-at-home orders issued by Pennsylvania Governor Wolf. Virtual tributes for the UC and SGPS were held on Saturday, May 16. If you missed the events or want to watch again, you can view them online by clicking here.

Congratulations Class of 2020! Let’s get a glimpse of what some of our graduates enjoyed most about Rosemont and their hopes for the future.

Senior Art Students Find a New Way to Showcase their Senior Art Work When the pandemic hit during the spring semester as most seniors were completing capstone projects, seniors in the art department were left wondering how they would be able to showcase their work and complete their senior shows. A Rosemont alumna’s relationship with her community continues to grow across many generations. Nancy Newhouse ‘68, would be the first to tell you that she is not a “Nantucket-er.” Beginning with her employment with the island’s lone hospital and culminating in her new role with Meals on Wheels, a program that delivers food to the locals that was in need of more volunteers recently with the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Newhouse is now firmly entrenched on the island. Alumni of classes ending in 0s and 5s will hold their Alumni Reunion Weekend on June 4-6, 2021, along with the classes of the 1s and 6s. However, because it is still important to celebrate Commencement milestones, the Office of Alumni Relations will be inviting classes ending in 0s and 5s to gather virtually as individual classes on Zoom during the month of June. An invitation for your class is headed to your inbox soon! In addition, those classes that were planning for an on-campus Reunion this summer will be invited to a virtual Memorial Service for deceased classmates that will be held on Sunday, June 7, at 2 pm, also via Zoom. Artists in The Time of Pandemic One of the activities sorely missed during this time of social distancing and staying home, is the ability to walk freely into an art gallery and enjoy art. Rosemont’s Patricia M. Nugent Art Gallery is closed and we are unable to enjoy the beautiful art that has inhabited its walls for so many years. To keep you visually inspired, RoCo is sharing with you a series called Artists in the Time of Pandemic. You can virtually meet artists and hear them speak of their work while you enjoy seeing the art.
