Sited on top of a 5-storey rehabilitation facility, the proposal rejuvenates an unutilized roof deck into a 2-storey extension accommodating 75 additional bed spaces for a residential care home specializing for persons with disabilities. A tailor-made environmentally sustainable rehabilitation green deck is re-provided for users of the complex.

The interior of the complex is cheerfully lit by natural lighting with bright and joyful colors to take away the slightest hint of a residential rehabilitation facility. Integration of greenery and super graphics hand-painted by the users adds joy and happiness to the long stay home. A strong sense of belongings has been developed by residents and staffs over the years. The design tries to create a distinctive identity for the new adaptive reuse, while respecting the existing building fabric. In order to break away from the monotony of rehabilitation institutes, the planning focuses on creating a homely environment and introducing nature and greenery for the users. Careful articulation on the curtain wall faรงade, by a subtle play on scale and transparency, provides a cozy home in contrast with the mundane of adjacent repetitive concrete frames and ribbon windows. Contrasting with the boldness of existing RC structures and mosaic tiles, the marriage of glazed panes and aluminum panels creates playful built-form as the new focus of the central court.

Extension to TWGHs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Centre ABERDEEN, HONG KONG

Merit Award - Quality Building Award 2016 Merit Award - Best Landscape Award 2016 A substantial portion of the existing roof element, including posts, edge walls and parapets, has been integrated into the new energy efficient curtain wall system comprising of low-emissivity glazing panels, sun shading devices and perforated aluminum panels. The energetic play on thematic elevations and the subtle variation on transparency of façade panels are in fact defined by different uses and functions of the interior space, connecting the inside with the outside.

The proposal addresses the need to create a rehabilitation garden for the physically challenged. The new roof rehabilitation green deck comprises of 60% turf and 20% on raised artificial timber decks.

BACK IN EUROPE,WORLD ARCHITECTURE AWARDS SHORTLIST 343 NOMINATIONS

WAF AKAGANE MUSEUM by Nikken Sekkei

The China Pavilion for Milan Expo 2015, a happiness centre in Bhutan and a miniature library in the Philippines are among the Asian entries shortlisted for this year’s World Architecture Festival Awards. Now in its ninth year, the festival received a record of 784 entries for the event from November 16 to 18, of which 343 have been shortlisted. There are 42 nations represented on the list with entries ranging from private homes, shops and schools to commercial developments and landscape projects. The awards have seen a significant increase in European entries this year as the festival relocates to Berlin. The biggest increases came from Britain, Germany, Turkey and Australia. “This is a very exciting year for us, with a record entry and a very high overall standard. Our move to Berlin, after four successful years in Singapore, has not deterred Asian and Australasian practices from entering the awards, and we have seen big increases from Europe and North America,” says Paul Finch, World Architecture Festival programme director. BP REGISTERS ONLY MARGINAL GROWTH IN GLOBAL ANNUAL CARBON EMISSIONS Carbon emissions nearly stopped growing last year for the first time in 10 years as the world turned its back on coal and embraced energy efficiency and renewable power with increased vigour, according to figures compiled by oil company BP. With the exception of a drop in global emissions around the time of the 2009 financial crisis, which heavily depressed business activity, the figure of 0.1% growth in carbon dioxide is the lowest for 25 years, according to the latest BP Statistical Review of World Energy. Wind power capacity grew by 17.4% and solar power capacity by 32.6% last year. China became the largest generator of solar power. “There are good reasons for thinking that some of this slowdown reflects structural forces that are likely to persist and grow in importance,” BP chief economist Spencer Dale said of the slowdown in carbon emission growth. “But some probably reflects cyclical factors, particularly the contraction of China’s most energy-intensive sectors, which are unlikely to keep being repeated and may well unwind in future years.”

10 DESIGN WINS CONTEST FOR ZHUHAI CONVENTION CENTRE SECOND PHASE 10 Design has beaten nine competitors around the world to win the contract to design the second phase of the Zhuhai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The second phase will contain 273,000m2 more space for conventions, and for offices and shops. State-owned Huafa Group expects construction to begin this year. The development will eventually have a gross floor area of 980,000m2. It will be the core of the new Shizimen central business district. “This exciting win allows us to enforce the development’s key concepts such as using public functions within the urban ribbon to link the city with the waterfront by framing and activating a grand public plaza, while screening the more private functions of the convention and exhibition,” says 10 Design partner Gordon Affleck. The new convention component also extends the public space around the urban ribbon using a series of elevated terraces that form a number of layered courtyards and informal gardens.” More information is available at www.10design.co

A programme preparation report by Atkins, assessing the potential environmental impact of policy actions to be taken by the Hebei provincial government to counter air pollution in the greater Beijing capital area, has helped China get a loan of US$300 million from the Asian Development Bank. The greater Beijing capital area comprises, Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. About 109 million people live there, and the area accounts for 10% of China’s gross domestic product. The region’s economic growth has caused grave air pollution as industry, urban development and the use of motor vehicles burgeon, so endangering health. The Hebei provincial government hopes its actions will reduce air pollution and help China meet its international commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting coal consumption. Atkins conducted a rapid strategic environmental assessment, which is meant to ensure the appreciation of the consequences for the environment and sustainability of policy actions under consideration. STATE GOVT GIVES PLANNING PERMISSION FOR ZAHA HADID PROJECT IN MELBOURNE The government of Victoria has granted planning consent for the development of 600 Collins Street in Melbourne, a ZHA project. The 54-storey mixed-use tower will contain 420 apartments, offices, shops and public areas.A colonnade of curved columns on the Collins Street facade will keep the building in character with the historical architecture of the CBD. The 70,000m2 space will be divided into stacked vases, each tapering inwards to create new public areas, including a plaza, terraces and pedestrian access to the Southern Cross railway station and the trams. The building is designed to use 50% less energy than a conventional mixeduse tower. The facade contributes to curbing the building’s direct solar gain and emissions. A high-performance glazing system and high-efficiency central cooling, lighting and water reuse systems will keep consumption of resources in check and further curb emissions.

KNIGHT FRANK BEGINS SELLING HOMES IN LONDON’S KEYBRIDGE, CITY WHARF

DLN’ S PLAN FOR NORTH POINT OFFICES A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR TENANTS Architecture firm DLN’s main concerns in designing Grade-A offices to be built where Hong Kong’s Newton Hotel now stands, in Electric Road in North Point, are the microclimate of the site and the health of the occupants. The redevelopment will consist of a 22-storey office tower, two floors of shops, a podium garden and a twolevel underground car park.

Knight Frank has put on the market homes in developments in London by the joint venture of Mount Anvil and FABRICA by A2Dominion. The developments are Keybridge in Vauxhall SW8 and City Wharf in Wharf Road N1. Keybridge is near Vauxhall Bridge and the River Thames. It will bring new homes, open spaces, shops, offices and a primary school to a part of London that is being regenerated. The development comprises two towers: the eight-storey Keybridge House and the 37-storey Keybridge Lofts, Britain’s tallest brick building. Together they contain 441 studio flats, apartments or penthouses with one, two or three bedrooms, the dwellings ranging in floor area from 37m2 to 219m2. The second phase of City Wharf, called The Merchant Building, is just off Wharf Road. It is a low-rise development overlooking Regent’s Canal, artfully contrasting with the high-rise buildings in City Road nearby. Prices start at £755,000 for two-bedroom flats ready for occupation. More information at www.knightfrank.com.hk

DLN is aiming for LEED Platinum, BEAM Plus Platinum and CGBL 3-Stars green design certifications for the building. Particular attention will be paid to the environment indoors, and to saving energy. Wind catchers integrated with the spandrel and windows than can be opened when the outside air is cool and dry enough will enhance natural ventilation of the building, protecting the health of the occupants and saving energy that would otherwise be spent on air conditioning. Controlling the speed of the airflow and the noise it makes will curb any nuisance it causes. Visit www.dln.com.hk for information.

NETWORKED MANUFACTURING DISPLAYED IN BEST LIGHT BY ATELIER BRÜCKNER Atelier Brückner was the designer of Trumpf’s new headquarters in Ditzingen, where the German mechanical engineering company makes machine tools and lasers. The design reflects in various ways how Trumpf’s networked manufacturing works. The TruConnect visitor forum gives an overview of present and future opportunities in networked manufacturing. The exhibition architecture reflects and explains the technology used in production. The materials used and the design are derived from the production process. Individual metal elements, such as the ornamental porch, were made in the factory. The visitor forum consists of an exhibition area on the ground floor and a reception and lounge area on the upper floor. An eye-catching stainless steel sculpture connects the two floors. Steel parts at various stages of being processed hang from the ceiling. Attached to the exhibition is a fully operational, 500m2 machine hall, where laser, punching and bending machinery draws the eye. Product information conveyed by film and graphics is displayed on steles and on a monitor wall. Customers get a manager’s-eye view of the machines from the upper floor. The practice’s website www.atelier-brueckner.de has more information.

AEDAS DESIGN ENSURES TEMPLE MALL IN HONG KONG LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

SHL’S CLOUD PAVILION NOW PERMANENT EXHIBITION SPACE ON SHANGHAI BUND

The Aedas architecture practice drew inspiration from Wong Tai Sin Temple next door in designing Hong Kong’s new Temple Mall shopping arcade, which has rejuvenated that part of Kowloon. The Link REIT’s four-storey mall contains 47,400m2 of floor space and has two podiums housing various shops and places to eat and drink.Temple Mall is encircled by perforated aluminium panels bearing a twisted, modernised Chinese character for yellow, which is the first character of the names of the temple and the mall. At night the mall’s facade is lit up. The main entrance plaza is ornamented with five floating spiral incense lanterns of various sizes, a wavy feature wall and columns bearing oriental patterns, all reflections of Wong Tai Sin Temple. Inside the atrium, void rings on the ceiling imitate the shape of the lanterns outside.

Contributing to the regeneration and development of the West Bund area of Shanghai, Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen have completed a permanent exhibition and art pavilion on the riverside promenade. The pavilion is a redesigned, permanent version of the Cloud Pavilion built for the West Bund Biennale of Contemporary Art and Architecture in 2013. The original Cloud Pavilion had two white surfaces and 20,000 pieces of white rope, and was meant as a counterpoint to the cranes on the Huangpu River waterfront. The new version retains the steel structure of the original, giving at least 100m² of space for exhibitions and other events, and has a kitchen with storage space. SHL partner Chris Hardie said: “The new pavilion creates a singular space in the form of an extruded glass cloud. The cloud shape, in plan, directly relates to the cartoon-like form associated with how a child would draw a cloud, and how clouds are often seen depicted in traditional Chinese prints.” Visit www.shl.dk for more details.

Sense of Place Each of the participants in the roundtable agree that Hong Kong and Singapore remain the key regional centres for design. The cities account for the big number of multinational organisations who have their headquarters in either city. Alex Brazier is Creative Director at Lead 8, a recently established architectural practice specialising in master planning, interior design and large-scale retail projects. “I would probably talk about design more holistically,” he says. “I think Hong Kong is known more as a financial hub, and it seems that there is a cultural shift going on now as the creative industries gain more momentum. It’s actually an exciting time of development for Hong Kong, an opportunity to examine its own cultural identity as a city on the edge of China and a major regional hub.” PMDL is an architecture, master planning and interior design practice with offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Hong Kong. PMDL associate Aino Kavantera says Hong Kong is known internationally as a trading centre, a commercial centre and certainly a shopping centre, but with retail becoming more about the lifestyle than the shopping, what is required are destinations that attract people to eat and shop.

Change Makers “The market wants innovation,” she says. “It’s demanding it.” These changes in the marketplace ensure that it is an interesting time to be a designer. Turnbull agrees. “The traditional idea of interior design has its origins in an approach that is primarily decorative, but due to greater market competition, this approach is being challenged and will ultimately be superceded by a design process that is defined by innovation rather than just appearance. Business optimization and brand performance are at the heart of this discussion.” Kavantera agrees, adding that there is a curiosity in Hong Kong, a city that is open to anything new. “Perhaps there is a place for new things and a new food scene people haven’t tried before.” She says. “They embrace that enthusiastically, even seeing long queues forming outside of new venues. The market is definitely ready but it is probably not here just yet.” Although the population may embrace changes to fringes of the city’s social fabric, Hong Kong remains a conservative city and is much slower to change, according to Keefe. Tom Herron is a principal at multidisciplinary international design practice HASSELL. “In interesting shift we are seeing is a movement away from design briefs that are being driven firstly and fundamentally by operational requirements. Organisations are more and more seeing the importance of a brand, DNA or culture not just being expressed and experienced by their clients or customers with commonplace expressions of branding or identity. Cultural identity must go beyond branding and manifest as a unique day-today experience for talent, as well as clients and customers. And, the operational models and briefs need to support this.” “Hong Kong is still a regional hub that attracts top talent. As the regional economy continues to grow, clients have increasing pressure to differentiate their work, hospitality or retail environments from their competitors in order to attract the best talent, as well as new customers or clients. In-turn, there an increasing demand for innovation from the designers they engage to give them a competitive advantage.”

Considering Culture How can the trend to a more experiential style manifest locally? Lee says it always goes back to what is culturally relevant. “Hong Kong has long aspired to internationalised design and this will continue,” she says. “What is becoming interesting is what you see contextually in say, Yau Ma Tei or in Tin Hau, I’m talking specifically about hotel experiences, small locations that are all about innovation and getting the local community involved and creating a very bespoke experience which pulls away from convention. Rather than the designers creating something new this allows evolution from within the community. “In terms of cultural experiences, it’s all about local innovations. It’s about taking in and getting the local community involved, creating a very interesting experience, which is supposed to create affection, while leaving it to the community. We are not going to reinterpret it or redefine it so much.” She says the era of big landmarks has passed. The only way to keep travellers coming back to Hong Kong is rediscovery, having new places to discover. Perhaps in this way Hong Kong needs to rebrand itself so travellers know there is much more to the city than half a dozen iconic tourist experiences.

Hearing Voices Among the roundtable participants, there is an acceptance of a need to include different voices. Brazier notes that one challenge design professionals face in Hong Kong is the linear hierarchy and a seeming unwillingness to voice one’s opinion unless permission has been given. “I think it gets really interesting when the clients get into a relationship with the consultants. Once you have gone through the process it is very much based on loyalty and trust. When you’ve crossed that bridge it can go really, really well and you get more benefit and often a lot more work from it,” says Brazier. “But you have to get through that difficult process first.” While the larger practices are interacting with tertiary institutions, offering internships and other initiatives to gauge the brightest talent emerging into the market the speakers note that there are some dramatic changes afoot. Herron notes that at HASSELL, there is an effort made to design the work environment to help graduates ease from university into the work force. Lee says: “The biggest challenge to recruitment is that nobody actually wants a full time job. They want to be consultants, freelancers. What young people crave now is constant change, they want the full experience.”

High West is a modern 30-storey high-rise apartment completed in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong by Henderson Land in 2014. Lighting design by Lightlinks illuminates all public spaces, including the entrance lobby, lift lobbies, the clubhouse and podium façade and the rear side outdoor garden. Lightlinks lighting design provides the building’s inhabitants with a comfortable, relaxed and welcoming environment.

Koichi Tanaka, CEO

Dynamic interior spaces with contrasting light and shadows create a pleasant and sophisticated ambience. The podium façade’s wavy surface is outlined by concealed indirect lighting and sculptural elements on the walls were also indirectly highlighted, creating an engaging atmosphere in the concealed garden. The company’s lighting design philosophies are well illustrated at High West, a signature project for Lightlinks.
