ATELIER BRÜCKNER-DESIGNED EXHIBITION IMMERSES VISITORS IN HYUNDAI BRAND EXPERIENCE

The Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang in Seoul, South Korea has opened its doors. The building, completed by Austrian architects Delugan Meissl, houses a ‘brand world’ created by international vehicle manufacturer Hyundai to showcase itself to the world. Designed by leading European designers Atelier Brückner, Stuttgart, the Motorstudio Goyang’s exhibition space is an immersive experience spread across 4,000m² over three floors. The Plant section features the industrial robots responsible for production; once per hour these robots interrupt their work and perform a classical yet mechanical ballet. In the Innovate section, five three-dimensional installations introduce differing aspects of Hyundai’s automotive research, from crash testing to sound design to aerodynamics. A fully operational walk-in engine is on display in the Powertrain room. The latest range of Hyundai cars and selected vehicles from the World Rally Championship (WRC), in which the manufacturer has been involved for many years, are on show in the reception hall. Finally, the highlight of the exhibition is a kinetic sculpture, consisting of 1,411 moving aluminum rods in a gridwork pattern, that models the dynamic movement of a Hyundai vehicle in motion. Up to 2000 visitors per day are set to visit what is now the largest centre of automotive culture in the country.

SOM CULTIVATE VERTICAL COMMUNITY WITH LANDMARK ONE BANGKOK DEVELOPMENT

Plans for a new 160,000m² mixed-use development in Bangkok, Thailand have been unveiled by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merill (SOM). One Bangkok will comprise a range of residential, hotel, retail, office, and public spaces in the city centre and constitute the largest private sector development in Thailand to date. Located adjacent to Bangkok’s Lumphini Park, an estimated 60,0000 people will live and work in the district following the project’s completion in 2025. The vision for One Bangkok is a vertical village, designed to foster community and promote wellbeing in a dense urban environment. “Bangkok is one of the world’s most dynamic cities, with an exceptionally vibrant street life,” says SOM Design Partner Scott Duncan. “Our vision for One Bangkok seeks to capture that energy, weaving green, outdoor spaces into the fabric of the towers as they rise.” SOM have designed a selection of these towers for the project, each with its own unique character and form; green terraces cascade down one tower; on another, two volumes are joined together by a lattice of sky gardens and atria. Approximately half of the total site area will consist of public plazas and landscaped green space to form a new centre of social life in the city. THE SPICE TRADE REVISITED AT SINGAPORE’S WAREHOUSE HOTEL Inspired by the building’s original life as a ‘godown’ or commercial warehouse operated during the height of Singapore’s spice trade, the design of The Warehouse Hotel marries a bygone era with modern day Singapore to create an industrial yet welcoming atmosphere. Located on the banks of the Singapore River, the independent heritage property incorporates 37 rooms designed across six different categories in muted tones, with many offering double-high ceilings. The signature triple-pitched roof and original masonry walls were designed to complement the building’s existing layout yet the vintage interior design and furnishings ensure each room stands out. The Warehouse is the first hotel to be owned and operated by local hospitality firm The Lo & Behold Group and was designed by local architectural studio Asylum. “Our focus has been to protect the property’s legacy, while creating a fresh perspective on the term ‘industrial’,” said Head Designer and Founder of Asylum, Chris Lee. RECORD NUMBERS OF EXHIBITORS, BUYERS AT HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL LIGHTING FAIR The spring Hong Kong International Lighting Fair welcomed a record attendance of over 1,340 exhibitors, as well as close to 21,000 buyers from 115 countries, a 5.8% increase from last year. A survey of attendees by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council indicated a positive industry outlook, with expectations of persistent demand for smart lighting and substantial growth in the LED and green lighting sectors. KSR ARCHITECTS COMPLETES KUNMING ECO-TOWN AND QIANHAI BAY DESIGN PROJECTS

PLANS FOR REDEVELOPMENT OF STATE LIBRARY VICTORIA IN MELBOURNE REVEALED

KSR Architects has completed a number of projects for its clients across the Chinese mainland. The redesign of the business centre, office showroom and lobby of the Kunming Expo Eco-Town office development in Kunming, China has created a welcoming and environmentally conscious working environment. The firm’s commitment to sustainable design is demonstrated by the use of indigenous and locally sourced natural materials such as slate stone, laminated bamboo and other recycled resources during construction. In addition, a sense of luxury has been incorporated into a KSR Architects-designed office development near Qianhai Bay. Undulating curves and a cool design palette has been adopted, inspired by the development’s coastal context and the many green spaces that populate the Baoan District in Shenzhen. Panoramic views of the bay can be enjoyed through the full-length windows in the CEO lounge whilst, an enclosed oval shaped meeting room gives a focal point to the open office layout.

Designs for the redevelopment of the State Library Victoria in Melbourne, Australia have been unveiled by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. Completed in collaboration with local partners Architectus and Andronas Conservation Architects, the revamp will return 40% more of the current space to public use and transform the library into, according to Founding Partner of Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Morten Schmidt, a “true urban hub - a place where people in Melbourne naturally gravitate to in order to engage, learn, socialise and be inspired.” Known as Vision 2020, the new design opens the Ian Potter Queen’s Hall and Galleries to the public, whilst the Trescowthick Information Centre (TIC) and the Courtyards have been redesigned to better serve the library’s 1.9 million annual visitors. Improved navigability will be achieved through creating a clear hierarchy of thresholds and spaces, connecting the different zones of the Library physically and visually. Construction on the project is set to begin later this year and expected to be completed by 2020.

SINGAPORE’S FURAMA CITY CENTRE HOTEL REVEALS REVAMPED LOBBY CONCEPT

The redesign of Furama City Centre’s main and lower lobby has been completed. Situated in close proximity to Singapore’s Central Business District, the revamped lobby concept includes a new reception area, flooring, and lounge area, as well as a new facade for the adjoining Tiffany Café & Restaurant. Designed by Classroom, the initial phase of the renovation focused on the hotel lobby, whilst the second will create a new look for the guestrooms. The new lobby interiors incorporate design elements inspired by the rich culture of its location in Chinatown. As the hotel’s lobby and main entrance are not on the same level, the design team were tasked with creating a convenient yet welcoming thoroughfare between the two. An island reception in the centre of the lobby activates the space, whilst prominent new lighting installations have been added to create focal points.Timber wall panels and a vivid colour palette complete the contemporary look.

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SET TO BUILD SECOND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN SYDNEY

The Australian Government is set to build a second international airport in Sydney. This follows a decision by Sydney Airport Group, the operator of Sydney’s existing airport, to not build and operate on the planned site, citing financial risks to investors. The US$3.8 billion project will be situated at Badgery’s Creek, 50km west of the city centre. Massive earthworks are set to take place in the second half of 2018 to clear the way for a 3.7km runway and terminal building capable of catering for 10 million passengers annually in time for the airport’s scheduled opening in 2026. According to government estimates, the scheme is expected to deliver 9000 new jobs to western Sydney by the early 2030s, and 60,000 in the long term. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull cited the new airport scheme as a “vitally important project” that could inject more than USD$1.3 billion into the economy during the construction phase alone.

AEDAS ANNOUNCE DETAILS OF THEIR HONG KONG MTR STATION DESIGNS

FARRELLS TO DESIGN TERMINUS FOR KUALA LUMPUR-SINGAPORE HIGH SPEED RAIL LINK

Aedas recently announced details of the stations they designed on the MTR South Island Line in Hong Kong. The Ocean Park station is connected directly to the entrance plaza of the popular theme park via a dedicated footbridge, designed to represent the undulating motion of waves. The blue and green coastal-themed design palette and faceted sheet glass patterns of the station facade further tie in to the park’s aquatic theme. In addition, the Wong Chuk Hang Station serves as a connector to the surrounding industrial neighbourhood via three above-ground stations. The green hues of the pattern sheet glass facade add a sense of vibrancy and identity to the station’s exterior. Ocean Park and Wong Chuk Hang Stations are two of the five stations on the South Island Line which began operating on 28 December 2016.

In collaboration with AECOM, architects and urban designers Farrells have won a Land Transport Authority competitive tender to design the Singapore terminus of the new Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail. The terminus is set to form an integral part of the Jurong Lake District, earmarked as Singapore’s secondary central business district in the western region. Farrells have previously designed some of the world’s largest high-speed termini, including the Beijing South and Guangzhou South railway stations in China. In order to cope with incredibly high patronage, these stations pioneered the airport-style segregation of arriving and departing passengers. The design for the Singapore high speed rail terminus was conceived as a new civic landmark and Farrells will now develop the winning concept to address the requirements of the district’s master plan currently under development by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and a team of consultants led by KCAP Architects & Planners. The railway is expected to open by the end of 2026.

Designing beyond the boundaries of technology and function

HEAD Architecture becomes the big name in broadcasting design across Asia

Founded in Hong Kong in 2000, HEAD Architecture (HEAD) works across a range of interior and architectural projects for an array of industries. Amongst these, the firm has been involved in the design of broadcast venues since its inception, starting in 2001 with a small web studio for NOW TV in a ground floor building in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong. Today within the broadcasting industry, the firm’s name has become synonymous with the interior design of cutting edge studio facilities in Hong Kong, mainland China and across South East Asia, with successful projects completed for clients including Bloomberg, TV5 Monde, Eurosport Asia, and international Chinese broadcaster, Phoenix Satellite TV (Phoenix). Renowned for its interior design work for Phoenix’s award-winning headquarters in Hong Kong’s New Territories, which opened its doors almost a decade ago, HEAD has more recently completed its state of the art studios in Beijing after being invited to join the project by Phoenix’s founding Chairman and CEO, Liu Changle. As Mark Panckhurst, Director of HEAD explains, their relationship with Phoenix began in Hong Kong around 2006, when they were responsible for the interior design of the Tai Po studio within a newly converted factory building. Here they worked alongside leading broadcast, audio-visual and media systems integrator, Ideal Systems. The project was completed in 2009 and was so successful that they were approached again in 2012 to start the drawings for Beijing. “Broadcasting is an exciting environment to work in and it’s always interesting to be involved in a project where the end result is a space where there is so much going on. With millions of people in China watching the space every day and so many important visitors to the space, whether politicians, advertising partners or affiliate networks, it should never be underestimated how much the look and feel of the interior contributes to the broadcaster’s brand. In this sense, the interior design of both studios encompasses much more than the building and the equipment it houses,” he adds. From the outset of the Hong Kong project, Phoenix presented a brief that went beyond pushing the boundaries of technological and functional practicality. Phoenix’s vision, says Panckhurst, was clear and stunning. HEAD’s role was to accommodate this vision and at the same time to moderate it to take into account structure, acoustics, lighting, flexibility and adjacencies. “Our job was to take the sketches of what they wanted to be seen from a particular camera and to make it work. As with all our clients we liaised closely with them and their suppliers to make it possible to showcase the technology and professionalism on camera. This would become a prominent feature of the design concept and one that is particularly apparent in the Hong Kong studio where behind the News Set sits the Control Room, which is completely visible to viewers in all its glory. The production team and their monitors become a backdrop for the camera,” he adds.

Senior Correspondent, Theresa Xiao Tian Fu, is impressed. "The Phoenix International Media Centre in Beijing is marvelous,” she said. “Visitors are amazed by the spectacular, futuristic architectural design and those of us employed here think the studio’s layout is wonderful. It's a masterpiece of modern times." Panckhurst himself attributes much of the project’s success to the inspiring leadership of Phoenix TV’s Deputy Head of Phoenix InfoNews Channel Wang You Nian. “From the outset Mr. Wang has been a passionate design advocate, constantly engaged with the project team to achieve innovation at every turn. It’s great for a designer to have such a visionary client.” For the Hong Kong project, circular motion was also a big theme, with a spiraling staircase down to the set, which while not necessary for circulation, creates an opportunity for impressive wide-angle and vertical shots. An undeniable success, such features, including three staircases, one for shooting and two that are more functional, have also been incorporated into the Beijing studio. It is a look that has become something of a Phoenix trademark. And while most TV studios are surprisingly small and use green chro makey screens, and wide angle lenses to produce the effect, Phoenix have invested in creating spacious and vibrant studios that provide an impressive and dynamic backdrop for the news that can be shot from every angle. Indeed, the state of the art facilities that HEAD had a big hand in creating in Hong Kong close to ten years ago are as impressive now as they were then. Indeed, aside from the addition of new technologies such as augmented reality and motion capture that keep Phoenix ahead of its game, little has changed. According to Panckhurst, Phoenix had the same vision for the Beijing project in terms of what they wanted to see on camera, but HEAD were given new opportunities in terms of design. The challenge, he says, was to try to outdo what they had done in Hong Kong close to a decade earlier.

“The space we were given to work with was bigger and taller, and essentially a three-storey concrete box. So instead of having a large spread out plan, it was stacked up and we were able to create a 3D space by stacking up these cylinders where you could look out across the valley in the middle. It is an unusually shaped space because you’re shooting up and down a lot more, but we built physical models and used a lot of 3D modelling techniques to understand how it would work and look from every possible camera angle. We also worked with new ways of shooting, such as ceiling mounted tracks and floor jibs that allow the cameras to fly around the space. LED lighting is another big feature that allows whole sections of wall space to change colour on demand.” And while technological advances progress ever into the future, HEAD continues to work with local partners across the region to turn client’s visions into reality. Indeed, following the success of its previous projects and the reputation it has garnered in the industry, its latest offering is the completion of a project for Hong Kong-based Chinese newspaper, Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group.

Merging

Teamwork and Talent across Asia

After sixteen years in the Middle East and at the pinnacle of their profession, acknowledged masters of design, LW Design Group (LW) opened their first Asian office in Hong Kong in 2012. Since then, LW has seen a shift from a preference for elaborate interiors towards a leaner and more contemporary design direction and the company’s growth across the region has been nothing short of superb. Indeed, as leading international architectural practices continue to seek to establish their presence in Asia, LW has become an emblem for bringing an added element of sophistication to projects. By seamlessly merging the team’s skills in architecture, engineering and interior design, and driven by an incurable passion for perfection, the outlook for LW’s Hong Kong studio and its work across the region continues to shine brightly. With headquarters in Dubai, and offices in Hong Kong, London and Sao Paulo, LW’s expansion into Asia was seen as a natural progression, supporting its ethos of approaching each project with a unique blend of vision and skill. And while the company will be the first to admit that it has learned valuable lessons along the way, the design house’s experience in the hospitality industry has allowed it to plan spaces flawlessly, with an enviable attention to detail that factors in each client’s distinct requirements when it comes to front and back of house. Across Asia, the team has learned how work practices vary enormously from one country to the next. However, while in some countries a practice is asked to take the designs to a certain level and then pass on to local architects or contracts, LW wholeheartedly maintains its preference for fully documenting all projects and liaising directly with local firms regarding possible changes to meet local requirements that might not have been addressed in the original documentation.

Asian growth Adrian Battisby, who spent five years with LW at the company’s headquarters in Dubai, took over the role of heading up the Hong Kong studio in 2015, with the remit of growing the team and increasing its presence across the region. “Hospitality design is much more than making something look good. It has to be about creating the experience, the theatre and the atmosphere. This rings true for all our projects, wherever in the world, from grand hotels, through to intimate F&B outlets,” he comments. LW’s food and beverage (F&B) projects in Hong Kong have included the redesign of the renowned Tsui Hang Village at the Lee Theatre Plaza in Causeway Bay in 2013. Modelled after a modern Cantonese mansion the new design took on a sleek, contemporary feel, complete with designed carpets, black and white photographs of Hong Kong, marble Lazy Susans, tactile wooden furniture and vintage-style metal window shutters. In Vietnam, LW’s F&B projects in the country have included two bars and restaurants in AB Towers, Ho Chi Minh, namely the 24-hour Cantonese fast food outlet, San Fu Lou, and more recently, the modern Japanese lounge and restaurant, Sorae, which features a palette of blacks, natural timber and metal mesh and incorporates tatami private dining areas, and a busy grill overlooked by a sophisticated sake lounge.
