BRIXTON

Implementation of the framework in Larkhall park: wide paths and small interventions to improve the use and stimulate people to make use of the park without creating major value increases.

London is shifting from a city with a diverse population, to a city focussed on higher socioeconomic groups. One of the mechanisms that cause this shift are new built gentrification projects in deprived areas. They aim to decrease deprivation by gentrification: replace the current population by a more affluent one by changes in the urban pattern. To avoid displacement of people that dwell in deprived areas and maintain the diverse population, the master thesis looked for ways to improve deprived areas (Brixton) by anticipating on the new built regeneration of brown fields (Battersea) and how deprived areas can benefit from these developments. Literature research has shown that the cause of deprivation can be addressed by increasing the individual outcomes of the deprived population, by focussing on the improvement of the health, employment and education domains. By increasing the individual outcomes in these domains, people will be more mobile and are more likely to resist the pressure of gentrification. This will lower the chance that they will be displaced. For the full version of the master thesis, visit: http://goo.gl/IyDHUn .

The area between Battersea and Brixton is heavily deprived. Local authorities try to improve this by the redevelopment of the Battersea area, which will attract more affluent people, and by this the overall statistics of the area.

EMPLOYMENT

HEALTH

EDUCATION

Deprivation can be addressed effectively by focussing on the cause of deprivation, instead of improving its symptoms. This can be done by stimulating the increase of individual outcomes in terms of health, education and employment.

CONCEPT: four steps to improve the connection between Battersea and Brixton and improve the green spaces along the route.

Map of the proposed framework to empower the current population in terms of health and employment. The two main centres are connected by slow traffic routes and improved green spaces in order to stimulate people of Battersea to do their shopping in Brixton (employment outcomes) and use the public space (health outcomes).

The framework proposed for the Battersea-Brixton area focuses on the empowerment of the population by the improvement of the health and employment domain in order to minimise gentrification and displacement. This is done by anticipating on the new built developments in Battersea: one of the major redevelopments in London. In this, the more affluent people of Nine Elms are stimulated to use the small authentic shops in the deprived centre of Brixton, that nowadays already attracts many young professionals. This increase of customers of the centre will affect the employment positively and is done by the establishment of good slow traffic connections between the two centres, by which people can easily bike to the other centre within nine minutes. This connection is made more pleasant by improving the public spaces along the route. Because of those improvements of the public space, residents from the surrounding areas are stimulated to use the green spaces more often and for a longer duration, which will positively affect their health outcomes.

The design for the square reacts on the Thames by lowering the quay to increase the interaction between the visitor and the water. The tide will be shown by multiple jets that will be turned on during high tide and that create a water film.

BATTERSEA SQUARE PUBLIC SPACE FOR LONDON

The square in front of the Battersea Power Station will be the centre of the new build regeneration area and plays an important role in the framework. It will connect the framework to the Thames and will contain different amenities that will be also interesting for people from outside the new built regeneration area. Because of this, people from Brixton are stimulated to make use of those amenities, and by which they will profit from the benefits

of green on health, like fresh air, the stimulation to be physically active and the stimulation of social interaction. Because the square is not located in a deprived area, property value changes caused by the transformation of the new square will not result in displacement of the lower socioeconomic groups.

LARKHALL PARK

PLACE FOR THE NEIGHBOURHOOD TO MEET AND BE ACTIVE Larkhall Park is the biggest park within the framework and will function as an intermediate goal to increase the willingness to use the routes in between the two centres. Besides its function on the larger scale, the public green space functions also on a lower scale in which residents who dwell in the surroundings make use the green area and by this profit from the benefits

that green has on health. To limit the value increases and avoid creating displacement caused by those interventions, the adjustments within the park will be small and focus on the use of the park by local residents.

EXTENSION OF THE CENTRE Brixton is the centre of the deprived areas that are surrounding Nine Elms and will be connected to the framework to make people of Battersea make use of the small scale shops in the informal malls, owned by local inhabitants. Nowadays the centre faces an increase of visitors (mostly young professionals), and the new connection will strengthen this. Because of this increase, opportunities are created to expand this shopping area with small shops owned by the locals.

The proposal for the extension is combined with the creation of a connection between the framework and the centre. This connection is created by making use of the vacant spaces in between the elevated train tracks. The empty spaces under the elevated train tracks can be used to provide space for new businesses. In addition, the space in between the arches will function as a central square, where people can meet, rest, and enjoy the green.

SALINIZATION OF AGRICULTURAL LAND

Impression of the new small estuary, where the Vliet disposes into the Volkerak Zoommeer.

The Volkerak Zoommeer, a lake situated in the Dutch delta, is currently affected by cyanobacteria problems. This results in the fact that the lake cannot be used for recreation, and is only used as a connection between the hinterland and the sea. By the salinization of the lake, the bacteria problems will be solved and enable people to use the lake for recreational purposes. One of the problems that come with this salinization is that the agricultural grounds will be affected and that this will force farmers to change to other kind of crops.

New policy measurements address the cyanobacteria problems in the Volkerak Zoommeer by the salinization of the lake.

14

Map of the regional plan that focuses on the establishment of a recreational network and the agricultural changes in the area.

REGIONAL PLAN

ESTABLISH A RECREATIONAL NETWORK IN THE DELTA Because of the salinization of the lake, the cyanobacteria problems will be solved which will provide opportunities for recreation on the lake. Reacting on this change, a recreational network is proposed that connects the Volkerak Zoommeer to the small villages and cities close by. This is mainly done by improvements of the water structure, so people can use this historical structures again. Additionally, new cycle lanes and walking paths are planned.

This network is based on the principle of the public transport network, in which the different systems are connected and people are able to change between different means of transport in specific points, for example, people can change from the boat to the cycle. A small estuary is created to mark the entrance to the network. Additionally, interventions along the network will stimulate people to use the Vliet to travel to the villages and smaller cities who are located more inland. Examples are canoe lodges and furniture to take a break. In addition, different kinds of brackish crops are proposed that can grow on the salinized grounds, in order to keep the agriculture in the area.

HARBOUR OF STEENBERGEN

RESTORE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE HARBOUR AND THE CENTRE A critical detail is made for the centre of Steenbergen that because of the network, is connected to the Volkerak. Nowadays, the harbour of Steenbergen is small and not connected to the centre. By extending the docks towards the city centre and the establishment of a decent connection inspired on the historical urban pattern, the harbour becomes part of

the centre again and will provide an economic impulse for the centre of Steenbergen. Surrounding the new harbour, various areas that can provide space for amenities are proposed, in order to make the harbour area more vibrant.

ROTTERDAM

WATER

ADAPT ON FLOOD RISKS [URBANISM, 2013]

Twice a year, black water of the sewer system is disposed in the singel system of Rotterdam. Because of this, the system is contaminated and affects health outcomes of people who make use of those singels. To prevent that water of the sewer is disposed in the singels, the project proposes interventions to separate rain and black water by

making use of gullies and gutters that will dispose the clean rain water into the singel system. Because of the height differences in the area the water will naturally flow towards the singels. In addition elements are proposed that provide opportunities to store, filter and infiltrate rainwater.

IJMUIDEN

DUNES

IN YOUR BACKYARD [URBANISM, 2012]

The framework for the redevelopment of the harbour of IJmuiden is part of a bigger strategy that is created by a group of five students. In this proposal, the western part of IJmuiden is changed into a wetland landscape, which will have a high ecological and recreational value. The framework shown on these pages is a detail of this strategy, in which a transition is made between the wetland area and the city of IJmuiden.

This resulted in a proposal for a residential dune landscape that will connect the city to the wetlands. Special attention is given to the existing views from the urban fabric towards the new nature, so that they will not be blocked.

INSTITUTE OF PLACEMAKING

THE MOST APPRECIATED PLACES ON TERSCHELLING [LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, 2013] The institute of Placemaking aimed to discover the most appreciated places on the island of Terschelling during the Oerol Festival. In order to find those most appreciated places, visitors got a test tube and were asked to enjoy the festival and discover the most interesting place of the island and put the essence of this place in the tube. The tubes were collected in the forest close to the institute. Visitors were asked to place the tube in one of the nine cabinets. The cabinets differed from each other because they all had a different theme.

In addition, those collected places were marked on a wooden map and all the information about the place was digitalised and documented in an online map, which provided a good overview of the most appreciated places. In the end, 1100 out of 4000 tubes were returned and documented. For the full version of the booklet and an overview of the most interesting tubes, visit: http://goo.gl/iCJ6s5.
