MAIN RESEARCH QUESTION
To prevent London becoming a place for the rich, the thesis looks how displacement by new built regeneration developments can be minimised. This is done by literature research and a test case: the Nine Elms - Brixton area which will be the next big new built regeneration area.
DEPRIVATION
The areas around Nine Elms are deprived and mainly the areas surrounding Brixton face deprivation. In this, health and employment deprivation are the major deprived domains.

Literature research found out that regeneration should focus on the empowerment (health, employment and education) of the inhabitants and anticipate on the needs of the local population.

There is an overall process going on in London in which deprived areas are regenerated into prosperous areas that attract people from the middle and upper class. Those areas are mostly located along the Thames

The area contains two centres: Nine Elms which is the new built regeneration area and Brixton which is the vibrant centre of the deprived area. Instead of competitors, the areas could function as an addition to each other because of the difference in amenities. But a good connection is needed. CRITICAL DETAIL 1:

Selection of the most interesting areas in between that will function as INTERMEDIATE GOALS, that consists of the public green spaces and the shopping areas.
CONNECTING THE AREAS IN BETWEEN
The areas are connected by PATHS, PATH MARKERS AND WAY MARKERS, that enable the movement between Nine elms and Brixton. The interchange of people gives an economic impulse to the centre of Brixton.

IMPROVE THE EXISTING GREEN SPACES AND ADD ONES when there are possibilities. This in order to stimulate local population to use the green space in their neighbourhoods and profit from the benefits of green. In addition, the green spaces make the route more interesting.

PUBLIC SPACE PROFILE. The public space profile is applied in the bigger public spaces and contains a wide pavement and cycle lane which are outlined by a wide kerb. The profile will be accompanied with path markers that are placed in the kerb. In this case it are benches that exists out of an elevated kerb and lamp posts.

NARROW PROFILE. The narrow profile is applied in small streets that are not dominated by traffic. The profile contains a wide pavement in which current trees are incorporated. The cyclists make use of the streets, in which the signage on the road emphasises this, to make motorists aware of and anticipate on the cyclists.
WIDE PROFILE. The wide profile is applied in wide streets that contain bus lanes. In this, the cyclists make use of the wide cycle lanes that are applied on the bus lane. Again, a wide pavement is added to enable pedestrians to move easily.

LARKHALL
Section that shows the effect of the Thames and the design interventions on the new public space in front of the Battersea Power Station. The presence of the Thames is dramatised, while creating “intimate� spaces surrounding the station. 1:1500
Embed the route in the park and improve the entrances.
Activate the blind walls in the park and replace them by active ones.
Impression of the city beach that is proposed for the area in front of the Battersea Power Station. The beach will be one of the amenities that will attract people from over the whole city.
Birds eye view of the interventions that are proposed for Larkhall Park. It shows the new path that is applied in the park which follows the configuration of the park. In addition is shows the proposed buildings and how the element is embedded into the urban fabric.

Create spaces for small businesses in the fabric of Brixton by using the arches of the elevated train tracks.

CONCLUSIONS
Birds eye view of the new square proposed for the area in front of the Battersea Power Station. The square will connect to the Thames Walk and will contain amenities that will be interesting for the whole city of London, like a city beach and a space for festivities. In addition, the area will contain cafĂŠs, restaurants, playgrounds etc.
Add amenities, places to sit and provide spaces where new amenities can be developed that attract people from the neighbourhood.

When intervening in the urban fabric to attract more people from outside the area because of its interesting characteristics, it is important to retain these characteristics.

Small interventions in the existing urban fabric can improve the attractiveness of the public space which improves the willingness to use the public space. When improving deprived areas and focusing on the improvement of the situation of the current population, it is more effective to focus on the empowerment of the original population than creating a mixed population.
