WATER AND HUMANS
The design thesis project“Water & Humans” strives to mitigate the periodic migration in a relatively small settlement of village Hatkarwadi. The migration is primarily triggered by lack of water availability, no employment, educational and healthcare facilities.
The primary aim of this project, is to rejuvenate the village by curbing the ongoing migration and lack of water with architecture that can not only conserve water but also provide potential opportunities for healthcare and educational infrastructure, and at the same time trigger employment, which can be generated through farming & workshop spaces.

THE PROCESS
These sketches demonstrate the spatial quality, volumetric hierarchy, and the circulation paths to those spaces. The intention is to create spaces which speak about balance, levels and the element of water.
33 34
FORM DERIVATION
Unit Space
Space is submerged into the ground to attain better thermal comfort levels, which is then integrated with accessible steps. Units are multiplied to connect and amplify the various levels in play.
Slope on site
Site is excavated for provision of check dams, multiple units are placed in staggered form to gain access to water + use the space for other functions. The lowest levels act as a water storage container.
Units in plan
Functions are placed in plan (staggered) avoiding the formation of negative spaces. Central checkdam water body maximized for larger storage and functions are then placed around it.

ARCHITECTURE AND HEALTHCARE
The brief asks for the design of a general specialty hospital, intending to meet the medico socio needs of various communities with different economic status in MIDC patalganga region.
A hospital building differs from other building types with respect to the complex functional relationships that exists between the various parts of the building. Apart from providing the right environment for patients and care providers, it should also be sensitive to the needs of visitors. It is thus imperative to examine the emerging issues, analyze the challenges and acknowledge the emerging trends for designing healthcare spaces.

ZONING EXPERIMENTS WITH RESPECT TO FORM AND FUNCTIONS FLOOR PLAN
This zoning allows us to have three separate arms, between which the functions are divided. This gives us better opportunities for vistas, natural light & ventilation. Every arm consists of a secondary service core with the main core in the center.
Here the adjacencies are further placed close to each other, allowing for better efficiency in circulation, the placement of primary and secondary cores remain the same.
The adjacencies are kept in line to the option 2 but including a courtyard in the middle. This in its primary sense allows natural light and ventilation in the structure, and also saves existing trees.
A. Stationary building volume with offset. D. Cutting up unnecessary volume for wing division and providing essential connections.
B. Pulling the volume outside for courtyard light and ventilation.
E. Rotating the north block for more light and openness in courtyard along with integration of roof gardens.
C. Pulling more volume towards south for more shade through out the year.

SECTION THROUGH COURTYARD
The green open courtyard becomes an essential spill out space, which is placed centrally, accessible to everyone. The volume is stacked up on the south west side, this helps in casting shadow in the courtyard through out the day.

The elevations further accentuate the gradual increase in the architectural massing. Each side exhibits a different volumetric character while the facade remains monotonous.

Architecture visualization, concept massing and detailed physical models

Various scaled block models made to understand the overall massing and scale of the campus, and its relationship to the site. The model also help in giving an insight about how the form would appear from various points on the site.
It demonstrated the open, semi-open and closed spaces relating to their functions and highlighted the aspects of journey & discovery, transitions in spaces, which adhere to \the unconventional circulation patterns.
The block model gave us the freedom to try and test various iterations of conceptual massing and zoning of the Svaram campus.
Placing various functions based on the concepts of transition & discovery on the Ground Floor.
Identifying open, semi-open and closed spaces(slabs and slac cutouts).
Placing functions above to compliment the overall form and character, and also to compliment the functional use.
Form achieved through the block massing model. View from the rear end of the site. View from the entry of the site.
71 72
A detailed sectional model was then made of a functional block to further understand the micro design aspects such as wall fillers, slab thicknesses, roofing details and wall perforations.
This model makes it easier to understand and compare the building scale to human scale and therefore the internal spaces can be articulated in relation to the model.
Rear view of the detailed functional block. The angular rammed earth walls direct the circulation around the block.
Front view of the detailed functional block, marking the entry and exit on the ground f loor. Both spaces on the ground and first f loor exhibit different characteristics with regards to the light entering the space.
The model is cut from the centre showing the sectional view of the block after which the internal spaces can be detailed.
Section cutting through the block showing the slab details and thicknesses, the slabs are conceptualized to be double layered to provide for insulation to the internal spaces.
Section showing two spaces exhibiting different functions, the roof is slightly lifted up to allow diffused natural light into the space. The walls are also double layered which can be punctured to be used as display and storage spaces.
Section showing different wall configurations on each f loor, the wall heights, thicknesses, and perforations.

SATIPATTHANA
“As long as you are aware of something and maintain that awareness that is meditation”
- Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche
Satipaṭṭhāna is the establishment or arousing of mindfulness, and aims at channelizing varied spectrum of thoughts by making one aware of his existence by using light, water and matter(space). The journey in itself is a cumulative collection of various pause points that unfold as the path untangles.

The Architecture tries to encapsulate and translate the “untangling journey” of the mind and body. The shaft acts as a visual marker that makes one contemplate about what lies under and encourages him to find out ways to reach his destination.
77 78
One encounters the entrance, the only visible spatial entity above ground which directs the user into a subterranean trail that unwinds and culminates at an inner space where he encounters his ultimate destination, a gateway to nothingness.
The meditative space then directs the user to the boundless ocean. The cycle is completed, he is reborn. On the contrary, the built landscape focuses on celebrating the ruins, recapturing the essence of the site.

SKETCH REPOSITORY
Ar. B.V. Doshi asked us to describe Sangath (his office), in a way we would describe to our grandparents. Doshi sir spoke about reference- we always narrate through reference, with relation to some other entity that would help us get a sense of the place. Without context or comparison, it is impossible to perceive. Our impressions of a place should always be connected like a story, which would unfold gradually and as they unfold, our impressions become more intimate.
85 86
I compared and referred Sangath to different entities of varied scales, it helped me to feel the scale of the structure, and generate an image. I measured the vaults by walking barefoot and invoking my senses, tried to climb, run, jump and play, just like old times. I considered the building as my friend. By doing this I became more aware about myself.
87 88
“Learning by observing” made me more conscious about architecture and its minor aspects along with larger ones. This learning experience has altered my beliefs and opinions about architecture in an exponential way. I try to reflect my learnings about architecture and spaces in my sketches.
