John Constable 1776-1837 John Constable was a representative of Romantic painting (landscape painting) in England. He grew up in Suffolk, a flat, green land that is located east of London at the North Sea coast. The moorland, green fields, rolling hills and forests includes everything that we associate with the head of the English countryside.

The painting “The Hay Wain” has a very personal biographical reference for John Constable. The section of the landscape, which can be seen in the painting, is located very near to Flatford Mill – the property that belonged to John Constable’s father. On this estate Constable grew up and he spent his childhood and youth in this area.

He married Maria Elizabeth Bicknell, his childhood friendship, in 1816. Constable quietly rebelled against the artistic culture that taught artists to use their imagination to compose their pictures rather than nature itself.

He died on the night of the 31 March 1837, apparently from heart failure, and was buried with Maria in the graveyard of St John-at-Hampstead, Hampstead.
