Lost and Found items: items have been found at the Community Centre - A pair of sunglasses was found at the Book Station. A single key with a small tag has been found in the Centre Carpark. A pair of thongs was found at the Gazebo. If you think one of these items is yours please call Chris on 47707855. You will be asked to describe your item. Food Relief @ Community Centre – NoTCH are providing food through their Food Relief agreement with Oz Harvest. Fresh produce and bread is being offered on Thursdays during the Playgroup session. A table is set up on the Verandah and manned by a NoTCH worker. This assistance will not be available during school holidays. Playgroup is on during school terms starting 9.30am for all under school aged children. The Carboot Sale was a success even if on a small scale. As indicated in last month’s Notes – we were getting too large for a simple Carboot Sale. As you can see on the front cover – the quality of the paintings was outstanding at this year’s Art Exhibition. The exhibition ran over the weekend with an opening night on the Friday evening. The People’s Choice was Afternoon Light by Ann Walsh – congratulations Ann. Over 120 people voted for their favourite. Another Bubbles and Brushes is being held on 18 November starting at 7pm. This is such a fun evening and well worth getting a group of friends together grabbing a bite to eat and a bottle of you best bubbles and come along. No talent required, bring your sense of humour and adventure. The third Grief and Loss Peer Support group met on 12 October and had a lovely chat. Unfortunately, Suzi was not available due to ill health. Do you want to attend this meeting but having difficulty getting here? Just make contact and we will assist you in any way possible, eg transport, wanting to be part of the group but not wanting to VISIT with people – time and place. We are very good at accommodating – eg lifts can be arranged; participating by phone if only to listen to the group; alternative times or locations can be arranged for the group to meet on different occasions eg Night time or weekends. An updated flyer is in this Rag. Oh golly gosh – Christmas is just around the corner – this was brought home today when Angie and Bronwyn were setting up the new Christmas display. This year has just flown by. ……….look after yourself………..you’re the only one who can. Cheers Chris Rollingstone Rag, November 2021

WILDLIFE CARERS

ROLLINGSTONE, BALGAL BEACH and surrounds

BIRDS: 477077 356 OR 0412965535 GAYE LOVELL:WALLABIES & KANGAROOS 4770 7356 / 0412 965 535

Being a Wildlife carer can be many different things. We get abused, called tree huggers, greenies and the likes. Our unique native animals are called pests, dog meat, useless and so on. What one forgets is these totally amazing animals were here long before white man ever stepped on this land. He has in such a very short time manged to decimate many animals, he has introduced hard hoofed animals that damge the land, destroy the waterholes and eat everything. He fences areas to keep his animals in but stopping the natural wanderings of our native animals, he deliberately builds killing fences to protect HIS stock which would be understandable but stock is sent overseas to markets, not used here. If one takes the time to look into our truly exotic amazing creatures they would find nothing like them in the world. All our native animals have some extremely remarkable feature. Our beleaguered kangaroo, for example, produces 2 different strengths of mik at the same time, enabling the mother to feed 2 different sized joeys. Can sheep, cow, horse, buffalo do this. NO. Our platypus is unique, the tree kangaroo is unique—the list goes on.

This morning when I went out to feed my wallies in care I saw a very agitated joey inside my yard. I continued with the feed and then heard the gate click. Wow here comes Mumma, she must have come in earlier, left joey and headed out again. She spent some time having a good feed, then collected young one and jumped the gate again. It is this experience that makes it all worthwhile and the fact that in some little way we are trying to have these wonderful animals around for generations to come. Man is a destroyer plain and simple but with Education, future generations can have the pleasure of seeing these animals outside of a zoo. Zoos unfortunately have their place as we now have to bring so many animls in the world back from the brink of extinction which again was man made through greed. So many countries are fighting to save their unique animals the same as we are here. Don’t be fooled when the powers that be say, oh, they are in plague proportion, the only thing in plague proportion is us, the human primates. In my experience I prefer 4 legged animals. Animals give unconditional loyalty, trust, love and devotion to those who have earned it.. Ciao Gaye

FUN

FITNESS

A very happy group of splashers have taken the plunge and started our season with great enthusiasm at the Rollingstone Beachfront Resort. The pool is sparkling, perfect temperature for exercise and cooling off in our increasing summer heat and the lovely staff have welcomed us back to continue our “Splash, Fun & Fitness”. All levels of fitness are catered for with a very friendly user pool. Access is via a walk in/walk out beach entry which means not having to use steps or ladders. The pool has varying depths for which we use multiple exercises to get the most water resistance to help tone and strengthen the body. It is an encouraging environment with much fun and laughter. Tuesday and Friday through the gate between 9-9.20am @ the Rollingstone Beachfront Resort. Come along and enjoy social interaction with water fitness exercise. ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB INC. This month it’s timely to look at Lions work beyond the local involvement, particularly in the month of November as we have the ‘Lap the Map’ and I guess some people would be wondering what it’s all about. ‘Lap the Map’ is a National Lions Clubs Community Awareness Campaign to highlight Type 2 Diabetes, encourage involvement and promote healthy lifestyles. Here in Rollingstone we will conduct a day at Pace Park with a Colour Run project by our Leos ( junior LIons) on the outside of Pace Park. This is open to our youth of all ages. Adults will walk inside the tree line on the outside of Pace Park. Diabeties is a Lions International worldwide support program and a gold coin donation on Sunday 14th of November will go towards Lions Diabetes programs. Please consider joining in the fun. You will notice posters outlining the day and cards distributed around the Community to record your walking for our local ‘Lap the Map’ effort. Lions Australia have two other Diabetes programs that are worthy of bringing to your attention: Rollingstone Rag, November 2021

The Queensland and Northen NSW Lions Medical Research Foundation is currently supporting a researcher, Dr Olivia Holland, specialising in Gestational Diabetes. This is becoming a major concern with expectant mothers across many countries, including Australia. The Australian Lions Hearing Dogs, based in South Australia, train and place hearing dogs to assist the profoundly deaf for 40 years and now are developing a program for Medical Alert Dogs, specifically to assist Type 1 Diabetes sufferers. This has been a three year trial training 10-month-old Cocker Spaniel pups. The program is in advance to the first real life trial commencing over the next few months, with the expectation that all the legalities will be approved for this program to move forward. Should you like to know more about these two wonderful Lions Foundations, how you could assist as a ‘Friend of these Foundations’ or simply make a donation, bequest, or just gain futher information, give me a call on 0414808483 or email on john09255@gmail.com Our lions club wishes to thank those people who have collected ring tops for disabled children’s mobility equipment in Western Australia . We will cease this collection at the end of November as the return value of the ring tops is not profitable Regards John Holliday – Club Presiding Officer 18

FISHING REPORT: Giday Folks. Well another month in the year gone by and see Christmas stuff on the shelves at Woolies and Coles. Also some of the fishing tackle and sporting shops are starting to put out special Christmas deals, so save up your dollars and cents and buy your partner a new rig, which you won’t use of course! Good land based catches of Barra are being taken along the shore line at high tides with Mystic Sands area being very productive. Soft plastics and gold bomers being the go, however live bait is also producing good results. Morning and evening tides are the best times . All the creeks from Bluewater to Taylor’s Beach are producing good catches of Grunter. Mangrove Jack and Bream with Barra being landed at the mouths of these creeks. Average size crabs being caught in Rollingstone, Hencamp and Scrubby Creeks with the share farmers checking out your pots for you unless you keep an eye on them. Or do what some people are doing, starting to use dillies and working your line every 15 minutes or so. The wind has not been kind again this month so trips to the Islands and Reefs are few and far between. However if you managed to get out to Rattlesnake, Herald, Acheron Island areas their inner reefs are producing excellent Sweetlip and Coral Trout with incoming tides. Squid and Pilchards being the best bait. Good catches being reported by some boaties however limited time due to windy weather starting around 10am to 11am hindering the boating and fishing. Early morning catches being reported out from Rollingstone of Doggie, Grey and Spanish Mackeral using red and white lures and silver spoons trawled at around 4 to 5 knots. Well that is it for this month hopefully we might get a few more calm weather days prior to the start of the Wet Season and don’t forget the Barra Closure Season starts in November. Also put in a trip sheet with Townsville or Ingham Coast Guards plus let some one know when you are returning to port. You can leave your out of date flares and epirbs at the landing for safe disposal tight lines and safe boating. Regards Dickie 20

ROLLINGSTONE RSL Rollingstone RSL will conduct the end of year General Meeting on 06 November at Mystic Sands Golf Resort, commencing at 11.30 am followed by lunch for those in attendance. The business will include information on the RSL Queensland Annual General Meeting to be conducted in Brisbane on 8/9 December 2021. Members will have recently received the Notice of Meeting. The dates for the AGM are of course out of synch with our traditional governance activities but that is COVID for you. Our Meeting is the opportunity to inform the members of the business to be conducted and to have “your say”. REMEMBRANCE DAY- 11th November 2021 Our last service in 2021! A special one in that it is part of our remembering the anniversary of the ending of World War 1, it

is always a special service as we remember all who have served our country to maintain our freedom; it is a time to remember all of those who have given their lives in different conflicts or who have served our country in some way.

We will conduct the REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE at the Memorial at BALGAL BEACH as usual. Unfortunately, this year Rollingstone State School students will be attending swimming activities in Ingham and so will be absent on duty this year.

The Service commences at 10:40 am to coincide with the 11am 2 minutes silence. We will be supported by the RAAF from Townsville as a Catafalque Party as has become usual for our Remembrance Day services. They always look smart and drill well. Please be there if you can! and after at Mystic Sands Golf Resort, the home of Rollingstone RSL for lunch and fellowship. CHRISTMAS PARTY- this year to be held in November, date to be confirmed shortly. All RSL members and guests are most welcome. We have a number of people who support us with our raffles and Goose Club, and we would love you to join us if you can. We will follow our usual format. We meet from 6pm onwards, with dinner from 7pm. In the last couple of years we have found selling one raffle ticket with a number of draws throughout the evening has proved to be quite popular. It is an opportunity to meet fellow members in a convivial atmosphere. The Goose Club jackpotted last Friday night and a lucky couple won $800.00. The win was well received as they had recently paid a motza for a family members motor vehicle repairs. The Goose club restarts with a $200.00 jackpot and raffles are still available on Friday nights. See you at the club and at our REMEMBRANCE DAY Service. Ewan Cameron President Rollingstone RSL

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi Community The busiest term is well underway and the count down is on for Christmas. This year we reviewed our school values to update our behaviour policies and focus on Positive Behaviour for Learning. Each week a specific behaviour is taught and discussed under our three core values: We are Courageous We are United We are Responsible Students are awarded tokens when seen demonstrating these values or going above and beyond at school and in the community. These tokens are placed in our token tower and whole school celebrations are held when reaching a specific target. It was agreed upon that if student’s filled our tower token, then we would celebrate with a colour run. A huge thank you to the Rollingstone Lions and Leos for organising the colour run to celebrate all students exceeding our positive behaviour targets. Everyone had a colour blast for the afternoon and it was a great way of finishing Term 3.

Colour Run fun Our School’s Azalea We are Courageous We are United We are Responsible

Some independent descriptive writing from Year 2

As pink and freckled as a soft marshmallow, the flower sits in the sun shining amongst a forest of lush green leaves, as smooth as a banana peel. The smell of the azalea is the smell of the dirt on a rainy day. Not a very nice smell at all! By Coby

Our School’s Amazing Playground People talking, screaming and laughing is all I can hear at lunch. But when it’s not lunch time, all I can hear is the wonderful wind whistling. When I touch the playground all I can feel is warm, loved metal. I can look around and see huge, lovely trees that are giants and the huge, rainbow playground standing as still as a tree. When I run around it I can hear my shoes grabbing onto the softfall. I can smell the clean air serenading me. It smells like nothing, but it still feels lovely. Balgal Coastal Vine Forest Walking Trail

Balgal Coastal Vine Forest Walking Trail Members of the Rollingstone & District Lions Club participated in a guided walk on Friday 22 nd October through a rare habitat found behind the beach at Balgal. The walking trail is being developed by Council and Biodiversity Australia through a state government funded ‘Reef Assist’ program. Townsville City Council was successful in obtaining this funding which has seen the employment of 5 teams of 5 persons undertaking environmental projects across the Townsville local government area. Council’s Senior Officer for Environmental Operations, Adam King explains; ‘the 1.2km loop trail is still under development and last weeks guided tour with a local plant expert, Greg Calvert and 16 Lions Club members and interested community members will help in fine tuning the trail’. Councillor Ryder and Adam King had previously met with community members in regard to ‘active bush walking’ opportunities in the area and this is the first step in providing those opportunities. NEW OWNERS OF BALGAL BEACH UNITS Peter and Selena are the new owners of the units in Balgal Beach. We welcome them to our community. Peter has provided a few words….

As the new owners of Balgal Beach Units we are delighted to be part of your community and have felt very welcomed by those we have met. We know what it's like to live in a small beachside town having both grown up in Airlie Beach. Balgal Beach reminds us of our hometown many decades ago and that is one of the many reasons we decided to make it our home. We have spent a lifetime working in hospitality and tourism and also have another small motel in Airlie Beach -' Airlie Court Units'. We would like to wish previous owners Roslyn & Terry all the very best and we thank them so much for their help, advice and continued support in the great product they have managed for so long. We can't wait to meet you around the traps and of course you are most welcome to drop in and see the changes we are making and say hello. Cheers Peter & Selena'

Hello Readers, Quad bikes. Last year 24 people died nationwide as a direct result of using a quad bike. I cannot give you information on each case, but from the small amount I know, some will be use of alcohol/drugs prior to and or during operation, failing to wear helmets, inappropriate use or just bad luck. I do recall investigating a matter occurring on a cattle property where a large red kangaroo was so startled by one riding past it charged the quad and knocked off the rider. He knocked his head and died. True story, there were witnesses. Apart from those significant contributions to the national road toll there is also the amount of injuries requiring treatment at Hospitals. Again, I cannot tell you what people were doing on the time they were injured nor can I tell you what the injuries were, but these injuries were attributed to the use of a quad bike. Six (6) admissions to hospital nationally per day. Per day!! I guess the safety concerns of quads for the Australian Government were overwhelming and this forced the industry wide changes to legislation. You cannot buy OR sell a quad bike now unless is has a roll bar. Even those in the country NOW, these also cannot be bought or sold without a roll bar. All quads must be registered to use in National Parks, on our beaches roads and public lands. All users of quad bikes must hold a driving licence for a car. If you have a quad best to use it on private property if the land holder will permit you.

COVID 19. Good to see the borders are opening, I am personally looking forward to seeing family in the next few months that I have not seen for two years. In the event QPS members are called to your residence for any reason, we have received the double dose of Covid 19 vaccination. Firearms Licenses: Check your renewal date now. Get out of the chair and look at the expiry date NOW. Your renewal application must be in 3 months at least prior to the expiry date to be any chance of being renewed, if you miss the date it is going to cause you a lot of grief. All renewals are received on line. All new applications are received at Australia Post (participating stores). Closest to Rollingstone is Domain Central but there are heaps in Townsville Metro areas. Ingham Post office also receives applications. I know that Deeragun Post Office is not participating in this rollout. Driving licences, Registrations, Boat Licences, Trailer Registrations, DOG registrations – all have annual dates of expiry, please check them now. To all year 12 students graduating this year. Paluma celebrates 20th Anniversary of the Community Hall Sunday, 24th October 2021

Paluma – our village in the mist https://paluma.org

Rollingstone Rag, November 2021

Paluma in the Spring is a great place to visit. Not only is it cooler than the lowland coastal plains, but our gardens are a delight with flowering bulbs and shrubs, including many plants from the more temperate climes. The mayflowers, azaleas and hippeastrums are at their best just now with many gardens filled with colourful blooms. Many Townsville residents and other visitors took the opportunity to enjoy the splendid spring weather at our last Community Market for 2021. Crowds filled the Community Hall to browse the stalls and the children's playground, shade shelters and BBQ's were filled with people enjoying the fresh mountain air. All stallholders reported brisk trade and the sausage sizzle was a sell out. From plants to pineapples, gems and jewels, coffee and cake - the Paluma Market had something for everyone. Many visitors stayed on to browse the local art studios (including pottery and glass art), enjoy lunch at the Rainforest Inn or take a walk in the cool rainforest. The warmer weather has meant our resident reptiles are on the move again. Red-bellied black snakes have been regular visitors to gardens and our amethystine pythons are active, often basking on the warm bitumen along Mt Spec Road at night. At the eastern end of the village there is a pesky and most persistent brown tree snake that is intent on invading homes and sheds. Just recently it decided to take up residence in my laundry. Best excuse I’ve had in a long while to avoid doing the washing! A band of dedicated volunteers has recently commenced work to upgrade the Rainforest Walking Track in the centre of the village. This short (580m) loop track commences opposite the Community Hall and ends at Mt Spec Road at the western end of the village. It winds its way through some stunning rainforest and it’s a great place to spot rainforest birds. A small band of volunteers began some erosion control and track stabilisation works by carting barrow loads of deco to degraded parts of this track. It’s hard work and there is a lot more to do, but already the track is looking great. We hope to get some more work done before the wet season arrives. Thanks go to Wilfred for organising the working bee and the materials to get this important task under way. The History Display in the Community Hall is held every Tuesday from 11 am to 1 pm. Attendance fluctuates from week to week and can be anything from zero to 20 people. Lately, most visitors are from Queensland, but there have been some interstate visitors too. Most leave their caravans at Rollingstone to make the drive up the Range. The History Display will soon close for the wet season with the last opening on Tuesday 26 October. A much-anticipated event on the October calendar is the ceremonial morning tea to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of our Community Hall. This will be held on Sunday 24 October Rollingstone Rag, November 2021

at 10.30 am. The Community Hall is the hub of our little village and it is not only the location for many gatherings, socials, sports events and meetings, but it is the home of the Paluma Rural Fire Brigade and the Mt Spec State Emergency Service. We encourage everyone to attend the Morning Tea celebrations, and especially those members of our community who over the course of time have been instrumental in establishing, building and maintaining our beloved Hall. And there will be cake! Other upcoming events in the village include the Outer Limits Paluma Trail Run to be held on Sunday 31 October. Check the Outer Limits website for further information. On 6 November our own tribute to Halloween (better late than never) will return with the ‘Monsters and Mayhem on the Mountain Social’. Last year this was a very successful event and let’s face it, some people didn’t even have to dress up to look the part! A reminder that the Paluma Dam remains closed for TCC works to upgrade the spillway. The Dam Road and Camping Ground are closed for some 13 weeks until early December. More information on this work can be found on the TCC website. As I write, the skies darken with ominous-looking clouds and another storm looks to be rolling in over the mountains. The wet season is coming…! Michele Bird Our Community Hub at Paluma On Sunday 24th October the village of Paluma celebrated the 20th Anniversary of our Community Hall. A morning tea was held to mark this important occasion and was attended by some 50 people, including past and present residents. We were delighted to see the return of many past, long-time residents of Paluma whose families established and built the Community Hall. It was a great opportunity to acknowledge and thank these people and their extended families for their hard work in making the village what it is today. The gathering was joined by Councillor Margie Ryder, Nick Dametto (Member for Hinchinbrook), Helaine Gordon (Area Director, Townsville Rural Fire Service) and Lewis O’Rourke (SES Deputy Local Controller). Our many dedicated local and resident service volunteers from the Rural Fire Brigade and SES were also in attendance, since the Community Hall is the headquarters for both the Paluma RFB and the SES. Lynn Hyland provided a comprehensive history of the Hall and how it came to be in its present form. All of the speakers on the day spoke warmly about Paluma and what our little village means to them. The common theme was COMMUNITY. Our sense of community at Paluma is no better represented than in the walls of our Community Hall. Yesterday was a glowing example that the community spirit is alive and well in Paluma. We work together to get things done and when it matters, we are there for one another. With enough community spirit you can even build a Hall! The morning tea provided enough food to feed an army and the Hall was filled with lively chatter of days gone by and good things to come. Special thanks to the many volunteers who organised the event – you know who you are. Here’s to the next 20 years of celebrating community in our village hub. Yabulu is now home to a Blue Tree Project Last month, we put the spotlight on individual and community mental health and wellbeing during Queensland Mental Health Week, 9-17 October 2021. In light of this initiative, the Blue Tree Project thought it was time to start the conversation around mental health in Yabulu. The Blue Tree Project aims to encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns. By spreading the paint and spreading the message that it’s “OK not to be OK” the project aims to raise awareness around mental wellbeing and help reduce the stigma. It was an honour to be invited onsite to support the project and paint the tree at Yabulu. Thank you to the businesses and organisations that collaborated to make this happen. The Blue Tree Project at Yabulu is a joint project between Townsville StrongerCommunitiies Action Group and Queenland Police Service-Vulnerable Persons Unit. Also, big kudos to AJ’s Painting Townsville and Wattyl for their support and involvement. Now, as you drive along the Bruce Highway in Yabulu this massive blue tree stands out and is a reminder to ‘take time’ for the things that boost your mental health and wellbeing. It also encourages people to have a conversation with someone if you are having a ‘blue day’.
