producing specifically for future Tars and their parents. I won’t keep you long because I know you’re eager to start exploring, but I wanted to give you a quick primer on the journey ahead. Our nationally recognized campus here in Winter Park, Florida, is a great place to start. Flip this page and take a closer look at the intimate relationships that power this innovative learning environment. At Rollins, our inspirational faculty and industrious students are true partners who work side by side on everything from published research projects to life-changing field studies. Next, we’ll introduce you to students and alumni who are putting their interdisciplinary education into practice around the world. You’ll meet a computer science major who is partnering with Google to teach fourth-graders the basics of coding, and alums who are shining brightly everywhere from the boardroom to Broadway. We’ll also take you on a tour of Orlando—one of the country’s fastest-growing and most progressive cities—which lies just beyond the borders of America’s most beautiful campus. By the end of this issue, I hope you’ll consider joining us in making the world a brighter, smarter, and more enterprising place. FIAT LUX,

BEYOND
BEAUTIFUL Rollins’ beauty is well-established. In fact, everyone from The Princeton Review to Condé Nast Traveler lists Rollins as one of the country’s most beautiful college campuses year after year. Zoom in, though, and you’ll see that our campus is beautiful for dozens of reasons beyond its idyllic lakeside location, near-perpetual sunny weather, and distinctive SpanishMediterranean architecture. Take, for example, the intimate, conference-style learning environment in which small groups of students and faculty engage in lively discussion. Or the fact that you can drop by your professor’s office pretty much any time and have a conversation about anything from phantom partials to the historical underpinning of last night’s Game of Thrones episode. Take a closer look at everything our campus offers then schedule a visit at rollins.edu/visit and experience it for yourself. ROLLINS | 3
RARE RESEARCH Physics professor Thomas Moore’s echo-free chamber in the Bush Science Center is one of the many unique learning environments you’ll discover at Rollins. Moore has used the lab to inspire 25 undergrads to produce published research through the College’s studentfaculty research program. rollins.edu/musical-underworld

STAGE STARS From the Annie Russell Theatre’s historic stage to one of the country’s oldest Bach Festivals, Rollins students have ample opportunity to hone their star power. Last fall, 12 students collaborated with theatre director David Charles to create an original, fully improvised parody of Downton Abbey. rollins.edu/upton-abbey
SHINE ON Rollins’ motto is Fiat Lux, which means “let there be light.” Each fall, first-year students take part in the annual tradition of Candlewish in Knowles Memorial Chapel. Students raise candles to help overcome the darkness, symbolizing the power of community and the pursuit of knowledge. rollins.edu/candlewish
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM At Rollins, your classroom could be a Costa Rican rainforest or a Medieval castle in Scotland. Last fall, history professor Julian Chambliss’ first-year students stayed a little closer to home, curating an exhibition of Afrofuturist art at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum on campus. rollins.edu/afrofantastic

ADJACENT ADVENTURE Thanks to Rollins’ lakeside location, students are always a stone’s throw from a multitude of aquatic adventures. Navigate the Winter Park Chain of Lakes by paddle board, earn credit for learning to sail, or soak up the sun while studying on the white-sand beach.
YES, FOX DAY IS REAL Arguably the College’s most beloved tradition—and with good reason—Fox Day occurs each spring on a random day the president deems “too pretty to have class.” Students celebrate in a number of ways, from lawn games on The Green to trips to nearby beaches. rollins.edu/fox-day
ACADEMICS Develop the expertise to succeed as the world evolves.
THE KING OF CODE From Rollins computer science and math major to Amazon intern to a career in Seattle
Ten days after graduation, Shree Raj Shrestha ’17 starts a plum coding job at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters. The software development gig is the fruit of a summer internship at the retailing behemoth and the cherry on top of a college experience that rivals any in the country in richness and reach.
Flexibility to Thrive
“Amazon gives interns the freedom to choose what they want to do and how to do it. A lot of interns don’t like that, but I loved it because Rollins prepared me to think about problems in an integrated way and find a solution.”
Relationships that Resonate
“[Business professor] Richard Lewin always looked out for me even though I never had a class with him. We collaborated on a research project in which we created a simulation based on Darwin’s evolutionary theory. If I hadn’t done that research, I wouldn’t have gotten the Amazon internship.”
Future Ready
“Rollins made me see the world in a whole different way. It has prepared me for the real world and the changes that are happening in it. I learned how to deal with those changes, and how to hopefully make an impact in the lives of other people.”
Diverse Learning
“In Nepal, you take one final exam and that determines your grade. It’s all knowledge-based. Here, I got to develop myself not just through knowledge but also in other aspects of life like teamwork and leadership, study abroad and social entrepreneurship.”

Why Rollins?
The Big Picture
“For the next two and a half years, I’ll be teaching English with the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. After that, I plan to attend graduate school and work in the State Department.”
“The College is diverse in terms of students, majors, staff, and faculty. At the same time, there are people all across campus who share a similar story to you.”
“In and out of the classroom, Rollins taught me to interact with others, to learn by making my own mistakes, and to responsibly take ownership of my actions.”
“Regardless of what you want to do in life—whether you’re going to be a doctor, a lawyer, or an environmental scientist—you’re going to have to think on a global perspective.”

An Immersive Experience During Spring Break 2016, a group of Rollins students traded sunny beaches and bathing suits for a primitive campsite outside Moab, Utah, and some sturdy boots. During the weeklong trip, Tars tackled conservation and wildlife habitat restoration projects and soaked up the stunning sights of Arches and Canyonlands national parks. Rollins Immersion experiences like this, which occur throughout the year, take Tars beyond the borders of campus and immerse them in journeys of action, education, and reflection. Experience Immersion at rollins.edu/immersion.
WAYS TO MAKE YOUR MARK From days of service to community engagement courses, Rollins offers dozens of ways to help you develop transformative habits of heart. Explore three of our favorite ways your future classmates are making a difference at Rollins and beyond.

Igniting Imaginations This spring, Sam Sadeh ’18 and
eight Rollins classmates are using MIT’s child-friendly Scratch software to teach the basics of coding to fourth-graders at a local high-needs elementary school. The project, which is the result of a partnership between Sadeh and computer science professor Dan Myers, won funding from Google’s igniteCS initiative. In addition to financial support, Sadeh and his cohorts have virtual access to Google’s engineers and support team. “This is a great example of the power of the educational model we have at Rollins,” Myers says. “We’re not just training students to write code or get a degree. We’re training them to be leaders and take projects all the way to completion." Read more at rollins.edu/ignitecs.

Service From Day 1 As part of our move-in experience, first-year Tars helped students from The Paragon School prepare artwork for a civics competition. The Orlando school for children on the autism spectrum was one of more than two dozen community organizations Rollins partnered with during SPARC Day 2016. The annual day of service encourages the newest members of the Rollins community to ask tough questions about themselves, others, and issues facing communities in the 21st century. Since SPARC’s inception in 2006, 7,353 students, faculty, and staff have contributed 28,893 hours of service to an average of 24 community organizations each year. Experience SPARC Day at rollins.edu/sparc.
“One of the best experiences you have in your first year at Rollins is our day of service during orientation. SPARC Day will introduce you to the power of service learning and connect you with our community and our mission before classes even begin.” — Lindsay Clark ’11 ’15MBA, senior associate director of admission

THINGS TARS LOVE ABOUT ORLANDO By Andi Perez ’10 ’12MPCU
As Yelp’s Orlando Community Manager, co-founder of theORLANDOAN.com, and a Tar twice over, I’m constantly asked to divulge my favorite things about Winter Park and Orlando. I could write a novel on the subject, but let’s keep it short and sweet—my list of 50 things right in our backyard that will make you fall head over heels for Rollins’ hometown, just like I did.
10 | ROLLINS
Park Avenue 4
This charming promenade of world-class shopping and deluxe dining extends directly from campus. In fact, it’s tough to tell where Rollins ends and Park Avenue begins. Beyond the food (which warrants its own spot on this list), the avenue bustles with activity yearround, from outdoor movies in the spring to ice skating in the winter.
Dynamic Dow

From Rollins’ 22 varsity athletics teams to a trio of professional sports franchises, Orlandoans always have something to cheer. Watch LeBron James and Steph Curry square off against the Orlando Magic at the worldclass Amway Center. Support Kaká and Orlando City and Alex Morgan and the Orlando Pride at the city’s brand-new downtown soccer stadium. And catch the gridiron stars of today (Pro Bowl) and tomorrow (Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl and Russell Athletic Bowl) at Camping World Stadium.
Unconventional Classrooms

Mills 50 Orlando’s diversity is fabulously evident in the Mills 50 neighborhood. Vietnamese family-owned businesses line the streets with indie music venues, thrift shops, and restaurants in between. Old meets new, hip meets Pho, and all is right with the world.
Reasons to cheer 6
Beaches!
At Rollins, you’re an hour’s drive from Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna Beach on the east coast and a two-hour jaunt from Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach on the west coast.
7
Rollins is known for the intimacy and engagement of its discussion-based classes, but don’t expect to be tethered to a roundtable all the time. Marine biology students study at SeaWorld, English majors explore Zora Neale Hurston’s hometown of Eatonville, and art majors curate exhibitions at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. At Rollins, all of Orlando is your classroom.
Winter Park restaurants
Real talk for a second. Tars are foodies. And foodies love Winter Park. In fact, I’m fairly certain the hashtag #nomnomnom was coined here. Start at Prato, The Ravenous Pig, and Luma, then indulge your inner gourmand all over town.

CAREER CAPITOL
Alexis Satterwhite ’16 turned her internship at the Florida Hospital Innovation Lab into one of the coolest jobs in healthcare. That’s just one example of the opportunity awaiting Rollins grads right in our backyard. Orlando was named the No. 1 city in the U.S. for job growth (Department of Labor, 2015) and a top 10 city for college grads (CareerBliss.com). More than 150 international companies representing 20 countries do business in our fair city. Opportunities? Yeah, they abound.
Incredible internships
Orlando ranks in the top 10 for internships per capita, and Rollins has an entire office dedicated to helping Tars secure the best career-builders. Your future classmates are currently running Orlando City Soccer Club’s Instagram account, leading brainstorming sessions at the Florida Hospital Innovation Lab, and creating team-building experiences at a luxury chocolate factory.

Argentina Her Inspiration: Anneliese’s original plan was to complete a summer program in Spain. But then a full semester at the University of Belgrano emerged on the radar. “I realized I could finish my Spanish minor there and go to a place I’d never been.” Top Takeaway: Her Spanish improved where it matters most: in real life. For Anneliese that meant learning to tango, getting damp at Iguazu Falls, and hiking a glacier. “Now I plan to go to grad school in Barcelona and eventually live in another Spanish country.”
14 | ROLLINS
environmental studies STUDIED IN: Dominican Republic
His Inspiration: An interest in environmental conservation attracted Andrej to this alternative spring break experience. During the weeklong Immersion program, Andrej and classmates tackled conservation and habitat restoration projects and soaked up the stunning sights of Arches and Canyonlands national parks. Top Takeaway: The word “inspiring” can indeed describe spring break. “The work we did will have positive effects for decades to come. It was a reminder of how each of us is able to help if we just go out and do it.”
His Inspiration: For Jacob, the opportunity to study at the University of Otago and explore one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes was a no-brainer. “The trip allowed me to study at a larger university … and to take a weeklong break in Fiji.”
Her Inspiration: Chemistry professor Pedro Bernal, who for two decades has led a field study to the Dominican Republic to help reduce the incidence of waterrelated illnesses on the island.
Top Takeaway: New Zealand’s islands are draped with breathtaking trails, so it’s no stretch to say Jacob’s fourday hike on the South Island’s Heaphy Track was life-changing. “Exploring on weekends made me appreciate the wonders of Earth. I’d love for my career to allow me to see more of it.”
Top Takeaway: Prior to the trip, Dilya wanted to focus on social justice and environmental law. Testing water contamination levels in homes and then being invited to family feasts fed into her career goals in a way she never saw coming. “Each day you become more aware of true service, your privilege, and your ability to affect change in the world.”
Whether you’re hiking a glacier in Argentina or installing water filtration systems in the Dominican Republic, you’ll not only explore the globe as a Rollins student, you’ll also engage some of the world’s most pressing issues. With more than 80 international programs to choose from, you’ll get the opportunity to make your mark on the global stage before and after graduation.

Making Her Mark: While Christine opens clients’ minds to new branding ideas as R3D Global Limited’s operations and marketing manager, her own eyes are constantly opened to new outlooks on life in Australia.
Making His Mark: Raghabendra is designing management and marketing courses at Cambridge Judge Business School, where he’s also a PhD candidate. His Preparation: His first flight out of his home country of Nepal took Raghabendra to Winter Park for a campus visit. He knew right away Rollins was where he needed to be. “I came in with very little idea of what I wanted to do in life. Then I led two field trips to Nepal for Rollins’ Making Lives Better club. The organization of those trips sparked my interest in management and shaped what I’m pursuing today.”
His Preparation: Studying in Indonesia and Australia will change a person’s perspective. “The Rollins experience helped me to be open to try different ways to solve problems and to relate to people from vastly different backgrounds.”
The Preparation: For Christine, study abroad wasn’t just about marking off a checklist of destinations. “That’s what I liked about Rollins,” says Christine, who studied in Sydney and did field studies in the Galapagos Islands and Costa Rica. “The study abroad credits helped me graduate early and gave me the support I needed to make travel into something meaningful.”
Explain the Fulbright in 20 words or less. “The U.S. Department of State sends students and scholars abroad to study, teach, and create better intercultural relations. How’s that?” Impressive. How is the Fulbright unique? “The award goes to future leaders who are culturally sensitive and have track records of achievement, and it’s recognized by institutions around the world.” Why does Rollins produce so many Fulbright students? “The Rollins mission is ‘to educate students for global citizenship and responsible leadership.’ It isn’t just lip service. It’s at the core of everything Rollins does, and the Fulbright committee recognizes that.”
