YEAR IN REVIEW On April 9, Rollins inaugurated Grant H. Cornwell as the College’s 15th president. The weeklong inauguration celebration included a unique day of service, showcases of scholarship and the arts, and the renewal of the College’s Festival of Light tradition.
Some might call this an annual report. I find that terminology limiting. Instead, I prefer to think of these pages as a gratitude report, because they provide a glimpse into how your generosity this past academic year has opened doors for Rollins students. You’re the reason Rollins is a leader in offering students what I believe is the most practical education possible in the world today—an education focused on building wisdom and abilities that contribute to prosperity and the well-being of others. Because of you, the quality of our programs, the achievements of our students, and the beauty of our campus have earned national recognition. This year, generous support from our donors was invested in ongoing initiatives throughout the College, including our traditional undergraduate programs, evening programs through the Hamilton Holt School, Crummer Graduate School of Business programs, athletics, and critical financial aid. You opened doors for students to conduct original research with real implications. We believe undergraduate students should have a chance to conduct high-level scholarly research—the kind that’s typically only available to graduate students. At Rollins, students can submit proposals to work side by side with a professor on original research and scholarly projects. Students in the Student-Faculty Collaborative Scholarship Program aren’t just writing book reports— they’re working on research and scholarly projects with real-world implications and publishing their findings in peer-reviewed journals. Political science major Margaret Lewicki ’16 spent the summer of 2015 examining the foundations of democracy and exploring what
factors influence voter turnout in elections alongside Professor of Political Science Don Davison. They discovered that Americans with the highest levels of political knowledge are still less likely to vote than citizens with the lowest levels of political knowledge in Australia and Ireland. “Ultimately, we were interested to see if certain electoral systems contain inherent biases that may encourage or discourage various groups of people from voting,” says Margaret, who plans to go on to graduate work in political science. “This research has given me insight into the challenges and rewards that can emerge from pursuing an advanced degree.”
YEAR IN REVIEW Fox Day 2016 was historic for a couple of reasons. Not only was it President Cornwell’s first Fox Day, but it was also the 60th anniversary of the first Fox Day in 1956.

You opened doors for students to improve our communities. Community engagement is an integral part of a Rollins education, and Rollins donors are making it possible for students to change their communities and our world. In addition to offering volunteer and educational opportunities for students, Rollins’ Center for Leadership & Community Engagement (CLCE) offers Immersion experiences that take students beyond the campus, where they can explore cultural, social, and political issues affecting our communities and learn how to find solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. One of the program’s biggest champions is Raul Carrill ’15 ’16MBA, a participant in the 3/2 Accelerated Management Program who completed a bachelor’s degree and MBA in just five years. Through Immersion, Raul saw how volunteer work can help communities today and how it
could influence the way students will approach business in the future. Raul was so influenced by the impact of his undergraduate Immersion experiences that he served as a graduate assistant in CLCE to plan and coordinate the trips himself, employing the best practices of business management that he was learning at Rollins’ Crummer Graduate School of Business. “I’ve always viewed the Immersion program as a small business because it’s a student-led organization that takes more than 250 students on alternative break experiences every year—so it needs to be organized and efficient,” Raul says. “I’ve developed skills like event planning, risk management, financial management, and organizational development. I hope to use what I’ve learned to pursue marketing management or consulting work after graduation.”

YEAR IN REVIEW The Rollins women’s golf team beat defending national champion University of Indianapolis by nine strokes to win the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship.
You opened doors for students to be crowned champions. Athletics is about more than winning games. It’s about building relationships, character, leadership skills, and discipline. At Rollins, these traits help our student-athletes set the pace—in competition and in the classroom. With the highest academic success rate in the Sunshine State Conference, Rollins ranks among the nation’s best in blending academic and athletic success. For proof, look no further than our women’s golf team. On top of capturing the program’s 13th national title this spring, the squad boasted a 3.3 GPA and had four players earn All-American honors. One of them was communications major Hally Leadbetter ’16, who plans to turn pro after finishing a summer
internship as contributing editor at Excelle Sports. “When I chose Rollins, I was looking for a place where I could really learn and develop myself as a person,” says Hally, who transferred from a large Division I school. “My experience here was everything I wanted and more. Every single teacher took an interest in me and knew my name. They were so excited to hear my questions and always encouraged me to think outside the box.” Overall, Rollins’ 22 varsity teams have maintained at least a 3.0 collective GPA for the past 30 semesters. This spring, 343 student-athletes made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, with 38 earning a perfect 4.0.

You opened doors to second chances at success. At Rollins, students have many avenues to pursue that can ignite their passions. In the classroom, in the community, and around the globe, students are given opportunities that help prepare them to lead meaningful lives and productive careers in a competitive world. Not long ago, Kendra Davies ’16 believed opportunities like these were beyond her reach. A high school dropout, Kendra overcame drug and alcohol addiction during her 10-year quest for a college degree.

This spring, Kendra graduated at the top of her class with a 3.97 GPA and delivered the commencement address as the Hamilton Holt School’s Outstanding Graduating Senior, an honor equivalent to being named valedictorian. Kendra, a 34-year-old mother of a 3-year-old son, is the first in her family to earn a college diploma. She credits Rollins with helping students grow by pushing them beyond their comfort zones. She credits donors for helping her earn a

second chance at success. “Grace is not reserved for only those huge moments in life,” Kendra told a packed audience at commencement. “It’s also in the unearned kindnesses between strangers and the seemingly undeserved second chances we get in life. It is the donors without whom Rollins wouldn’t even be a possibility for many of us. (Donors to the Holt Scholarship Fund) could put their money anywhere, and they choose to invest in us.”
