Welcome
to our Viva Mexico! Special edition. Mexico is one of my favorite destinations. While the country is known for its beaches, it offers so much more. There are many things to do from learning about ancient cultures, to vibrant city life, to outdoor adventures on land and sea. When I first started traveling to Mexico 20 years ago, many of the popular destinations today were barely mentioned in the tour guides. And, several popular resorts since then grew old and tattered. Now Mexico is undergoing a tourism renaissance. Many older properties have been bought up and received multi-million dollar makeovers. New boutique hotels are sprouting up all over the country. So now luxuryaccommodations come in many sizes; with small boutique hotels to well-known international brands offering private plunge pools to butler service and everything in-between. The all-inclusive resort is one of my favorite “no worry” travel options, because all food, drinks and many activities are included in one price. Mexico has a wide selection of allinclusive resorts. In this issue I share my recent all-inclusive experience at the Villa del Palmar Resort at the Islands of Loreto. The article on Mexico’s Romantic Destinations will give you some great ideas for your next Mexican getaway.
Our destination spotlight this issue is on Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The focus is on the variety of things to do to have a memorable experience. One of the first things my friends want to do after reaching our hotel is eat. Mexico is a culinary smorgasbord. Cuisine influences come through from Spain, France, Cuba, the Caribbean and Brazil. I love to try different restaurants. And, I have a standing rule to never eat in a restaurant I could find at home. I want my dining experience to be as culturally relevant as possible. Do you like to cook Mexican Food? Alfonso Peregrina, Executive Chef, Villa del Palmar Resort at the Islands of Loreto shares his recipe for, “Traditional Mexican Tortilla Soup.” Give it a try and share it with someone special.

A Relaxing Escape: Vacationing at the Villa Del Palmar Resort at the Islands of Loreto
M
y recent trip to Villa del Palmar Resort at the Islands of Loreto in Mexico renewed my spirit, delighted my taste buds and let me commune up close with nature. The Islands of Loreto are known for their quiet beaches, rich history and astounding natural habitats. The sea of Cortez was a favorite place of Jacques Cousteau, who called it the “aquarium of the world” and the 800-square-mile Loreto National Marine Park “a paradise.” Mantas swam right up to me as I stood in the water just off the beach. Sea turtles, oarfish, whales, whale sharks, dolphins, mantas, boobies and frigate birds can be seen in the marine park along with hundreds of other species only found in the Sea of Cortez. The Villa del Palmar Resort at the Islands of Loreto is a luxury destination surrounded by the majestic Sierra de la Giganta Mountains. It is located on the Sea of Cortez, off the eastern coast of the Baja peninsula overlooking Danzante Island (1 of 5 in the region). It features 181 new, spacious and beautifully appointed suites. Available with with 1, 2, or 3 bedrooms, the Deluxe Ocean View suites offer a balcony or terrance where guests can take in the stunning mountain or ocean views. The property has 3 restaurants offering gourmet dining to its guests, day and night. In addition to several swimming pools, the resort boasts a fabulous onsite spa, the Sabila Spa and Wellness Center. Perhaps 4 Romance Travel Magazine
the resort’s best feature is the private bay with calm blue waters, perfect for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking. Upon our arrival, our group of 13 travel journalists and bloggers was met by several members of the staff and offered a refreshing drink and ritual hand washing. Check-in was a breeze, and I was quickly whisked up to a gorgeous 1-bedroom suite, the size of a small apartment, with a fully furnished kitchen. The balcony stretched the length of the suite and was large enough to host a small group party. My suite overlooked the pool and had a panoramic view of the mountains. One of my favorite vacation rituals is to take a candlelight Jacuzzi bubble bath with a glass of my favorite sparkling wine. Fortunately, I enjoyed this experience on several evenings during my visit since my room had a Jacuzzi tub large enough for two. Our group had the all-inclusive package, which included all meals and drinks. Every meal was a 4- or 5-course culinary feast. The food is good in every restaurant; I never left a meal disappointed. For a quick meal, try the pizza at Casa Mia, a charming outdoor restaurant. And be sure to ask the mixologist at the bar to make you a personalized drink; my favorite was the cucumber margarita. The market restaurant, which offers a completely different dining experience, served excellent seafood. not the taste. This appetizer was baked in butter and garlic and served with a soft, gooey layer of cheese. So good! Visiting the upscale Danzante Restaurant was more than a meal, it was a true culinary experience. Each of the 5 courses was absolutely delicious, from the Tortilla soup opening to the closing coffee liqueur after-dinner drink–made fresh over a fire at our table. Each presentation of the food was uniquely beautiful. We took an excursion to the town of Loreto and wandered among the quaint shops. We also visited La Cabeza y Madre de Las Misiones, a church built in 1697 and still open today. Luckily someone loaned me a hat, because the sun was brutal. We traveled by bus and were stopped in the road construction zone for about 30 minutes. Fortunately, we came back by boat, stopping by Lover’s Beach for lunch. By the time we got there it was high tide and the beach was wet, so we ate on the boat instead of on shore! Several of the women took that time to go swimming and snorkeling. The next morning, we woke up early and embarked on a hike up the mountain with our energetic trail guide, who described the scene around us, educating us on the desert, the plants along the path, and other fauna of the region. After 2 days of outings, a trip to the Sabila Spa was next on our agenda. The place was just fabulous. The 39,000
The first night we dined on chocolate clams, so named because of their color not their taste, sparked a conversation at the table about each person’s favorite way to taste clams. I quickly realized I’m a clam novice, since my favorite way to eat them is in clam chowder. Fresh, raw and unadorned seem to be the group favorite way to dine on clams. The chef suggested we stop by the beachside activity center and let them show us how we could find fresh clams by diving a short distance off the resort’s beach.

square foot spa was the largest I have ever been in. It had 3 soothing whirlpools– hot, warm and cold. The spa has 2 mineral baths, one with aloe vera and one with mineral salts, plus a sauna, steam room and 16 treatment rooms. I went for a massage, then visited the sauna and steam room. Then I enjoyed all 3 whirlpools for a relaxing finish to my spa day.
private bay and surrounding islands, is the ideal setting for romance and reconnection. Couples can gaze up at the million-star sky, while basking in the moonlight, all from the comfort of their private bungalow. A private chef will come and prepare your meals, which are served right on the large deck with candlelight. Be sure to take a midnight dip in your private hot tub.
Weddings at the resort are held on the beach in the secluded cove and 4 other distinctive locations. Wedding packages are reasonable, costing $1,100 to $3,000, depending on the package selected. Guests are surrounded by the unique landscape of desert, mountain and sea. An onsite wedding planner helps the bride and groom create the wedding of their dreams. For the reception there are several locations to consider, though the nightclub or presidential suite are especially popular options.
Still to come is a new golf course currently under development at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto. The course was designed by worldrenowned golf architect Rees Jones. The first phase of the golf course will open in November 2014 with ocean-facing holes closest to the resort, a clubhouse featuring ocean views, as well as an 18-hole putting course that will be a miniature version of the larger course where families can practice together.
Newly added to the resort accommodations is the Danzante Bungalow, a fully equipped beachfront glamping tent that enables guests to sleep under the stars while staying just footsteps away from the beach. This upscale camping setup comes complete with a king-size bed, telescope for stargazing and a private deck to watch the sunset. A stay in the bungalow, which features peaceful views of the
The next day several ladies went out to search for clams with an experienced diver from the resort. Not one for diving, I climbed in a glass bottom kayak and rowed out to the clam hunting site to show my support. Amazingly, the group returned with 98 clams, several of which we ate fresh, right on the beach with just a drop of hot sauce. We had clams served 3 different ways for dinner that evening–baked, stuffed and fresh–and I gained a whole new level of culinary respect for clams.
If you’re looking to party and have a lot of night life on your vacation, pick a different destination. But if you want to spend some unhurried time with your family, reconnect with your sweetie, rejuvenate your body and spirit and commune with nature, then Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto will be the perfect resort. Thanks to the attentive staff, my trip was one of the most pampering and relaxing weeks I’ve spent on a vacation.

How To Build A Strong Relationship While Traveling Guest Article by Illia and Nastia
It’s no secret that traveling as a couple isn’t always easy. My partner and I traveled together for more than 3 years and can say that a life of travel is a real test for any relationship. However, if you pass this test, nobody and nothing will ever destroy your love!
Before You Pack Your Backpack You must honestly answer several key questions before beginning on a long-term trip together:
1. Do you trust each other? Trust is the most important thing for traveling couples. You must be 100% sure that your significant other will never leave you in the middle of nowhere and will spend the night next to you in a hospital somewhere in eastern Cambodia. 2. Can you spend time together 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week?
If the answer differs somehow from the word “yes,” don’t even start your joint trip. Some traveling couples write that they sometimes need to have a “rest” from each other and spend some time apart, but we don’t get it.
3. Do you know each other well? A trip is not the time to discover secret habits your partner has, such as being messy. For example, while traveling, leaving the toothpaste cap loose is more than an annoying habit; it can lead to your backpack being covered with a sticky blue substance which you are unable to wash away.
A Little Romance
It is sad but true: romance dies if not nourished. How do you make Cupid pack his suitcase and fly by your side all around the world?
1. Arrange dates. Go out to the restaurant and have a romantic dinner, drink a bottle of wine on a beach or just walk under the full moon. Well, you know how to do that! 2. Celebrate anniversaries. In addition to “huge” anniversaries, there are lots of “small” dates you can still commemorate: the day you started traveling as a couple, the day you bought your joint backpack or even the day you registered your travel blog. Any anniversary is a celebration of your love, so do not miss it. For example, we have recently celebrated 3 and a half years together by publishing our love story. 3. Get dressed up. It’s hard to look great while traveling, but occasionally you have to dress up to “heat up” your relationship. Your significant other won’t not miss it and will appreciate positive changes in your appearance, even at the top of Kilimanjaro.

When a Trip Starts
It is necessary to establish the rules. Our list is pretty simple.
1. We work as a team. We are not just a couple; we are a team who protects, helps and loves each other. We always express only one opinion about a subject, even if in reality our understanding of a situation differs. We protect the interests of our “team.” 2. We never quarrel. Whatever happens, you can always “discuss” it. We call it like that. Quarrels, as well as other strong negative emotions can have highly unpredictable consequences. Nobody wants to stay alone in the middle of the night on a road between the towns the names of which we cannot even pronounce. 3. We divide responsibilities. We are always surprised to see a couple with two backpacks. Why do they need so many? She packs a backpack, he carries it. Similarly, if she cooks the food, he arranges the accommodations. The division of labor can not only save a lot of time, but can also help you avoid conflicts. 4. We approach everything with a sense of humor. He brought sand to the bed, she stepped on the phone charger, you missed the last bus... Making a simple mistake is not a reason to get upset and complain!
If You Quarreled
Sometimes the rules do not work and we still quarrel. What to do?
1. Forgive. Breathe deeply, remind yourself about all your partner’s positive traits and forgive. 2. Say “sorry.” Even if it’s not your fault, there’s no time to discuss it while traveling. The train will not wait, so just forget about it! 3. Change the subject. If nothing works, just discuss more mundane subjects: visas, accommodations, food, anything.
To Sum Up Travel affects relationships drastically: it either strengthens your love or destroys it. This is a good test of endurance for any love and a great opportunity to finally find out for yourself whether this person is the one you want to spend the rest of your life with or not. How do you strengthen your relationship while traveling? Share your secrets of mutual understanding and love with us!

Experiencing The New Orleans Music Scene
Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. Photo courtesy: Derek Bridges
Tipitina’s Live Music —This is probably the most storied mecca for live
music. Tipitina opened in 1977 when a group of music lovers who called themselves the Fabulous Fo’teen decided to create a juke joint honoring musician Professor Longhair, a famed musician from the Crescent City. As one of the most respected blues artists, the group wanted to form an establishment for Professor Longhair where he could continue making music for the rest of his life. Named after one of his beloved songs, Tipitina’s is a must-see for music aficionados. While you’re visiting this juke joint, don’t be surprised if you see some famous people from out of town. Throughout its history, some of the world’s most respected artists have played on the stage, including Willie Nelson, the Neville Brothers and Pearl Jam, just to name a few. Even if you don’t go inside, walk past the place and take a look at the sidewalk. In front of Tipitina’s is a walk of fame that honors music legends both past and current. If you can, visit on a Sunday evening during their weekly event dedicated to Cajun music and dance.
Enjoy Good Times at the Rock ‘n’ Bowl —You may not think of a bowling alley as the place to enjoy live music, but the Rock ‘n’ Bowl only starts the day as a bowling alley. As the evening progresses, the crashing of pins and bowling balls soon disappear into the live music acts that play almost every night of the week. This location fist opened in 1988 and survived Hurricane Katrina, although it relocated 12 blocks down the street from the original location. You never know what you’ll find at Rock ‘n’, but spend an evening tucking into the full bar and tasty fare such as burgers and beignets while enjoying the live music of the evening. Themed music nights such as Swing Wednesdays or Zydeco Thursdays are some of the mainstays of the place and draw a loyal local crowd. You may even find yourself dancing on the bowling lanes! If you’re planning on spending a night at the Rock ‘n’ Bowl, be sure to call ahead to reserve a lane. They go quickly!
Music Festivals
Artists To Check Out —Many of the world’s most
beloved musicians come from New Orleans, and, if you’re in the area, you may get a chance to experience a live performance. While it would be impossible to name all the artists, there are a few you may want to check out. Charlie Miller is a jazz trumpeter who is a well known staple at the annual Jazz Fest. Hailed as one of the city’s favorite jazz musicians, he draws crowds from around the world. While he does tour on a regular basis, try to catch him at home to see a live performance. Another artist you won’t want to miss is Wayne Toups. As a Cajun/zydeco musician, he hails from Crowley, Louisiana but frequently plays gigs in New Orleans. He adds a fresh sound to the traditional New Orleans beat and has been making music for decades. His outlook on life and music remains fresh, keeping him in the forefront of
—Of course, visiting New Orleans any time of year is a great chance to experience the music scene, and visiting one of their famed music festivals gives you a more thorough taste of the talent that lives here. Hands down, the best festival is the Jazz Fest, a celebration of the culture and heritage of New Orleans. Not only do you get to take in an endless amount of music, you get to experience local delicacies, parades and so much more. This event is known internationally and is consistently recognized as being the festival you want to visit. Music lovers are surrounded by 12 stages of soul-stirring music with genres ranging from jazz and gospel, to rock, funk and Caribbean as well as dozens of others. The event makes a point of showcasing some of the area’s most famous artists including Fats Domino, Branford Marsalis and The Radiators. You’ll also get a chance to experience artists not local to the region, including Bob Dylan, Miles Davis and James Brown. The Jazz Fest is typically held at the end of April to the beginning of May, so make plans accordingly. If you can’t make it to New Orleans during the Jazz Fest, don’t be too discouraged. New Orleans, with its temperate climate, has multiple festivals year-round. The French Quarter Festival, Voodoo Music Experience, Bayou Boogaloo and Ponderosa Stomp are some of the festivals held throughout the year. In fact, it would probably be a little difficult to visit the Crescent City at a time when nothing’s going on!

New Orleans is known as the town that knows and loves a great party, but it’s also just as famous as being the town that loves a good tune. Rhythm and music are part of the lifestyle, and New Orleans music has a huge range of options. Live jazz, Creole and zydeco beats, and brass bands play in some of the most fabled and legendary music clubs in the world. You can experience the music scene of New Orleans 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For just a small cover, or sometimes no charge at all, travelers to The Big Easy can experience a piece of music history. The great news about New Orleans is that you have a huge range of options to soak up the music scene. You may want to sit for a while inside a cramped music hall or enjoy a brass band performance from a bar on the street. However, like any city, there are a few places you may want to make a point to see when you’re visiting this legendary spot. Enjoy some of New Orleans’ best sounds at any of these destinations.
Traveling To The Area
—When you visit New Orleans, make sure to check out a few of these hot spots, and plan out your trip to include one of the famous music festivals. This lively city knows how to party, and you’ll soon get swept away in the juke joints and dive bars which feature world-famous talent.

Cancun & Playa del Carmen
By Dusty Fox
Mexico has long been a favorite vacation destination for travelers looking for a fun and affordable getaway. While Cancun and the surrounding area may be most famous for its status as a top Spring Break hot spot with college students, it is equally appealing to couples and families. This area of the world makes for a great vacation destination not only because of its proximity to home, which means shorter and lower cost flights, but also because of the number of attractions and tours available. Whether you’re interested in Mayan history, tropical activities or just lying around on the beach, you can do it all on the eastern coast near Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Traveling couples have their pick and should have no trouble coordinating an unforgettable getaway. Here are a few top activities you and your sweetie should check out when planning your trip to Cancun and the Riviera Maya region:
Tour of Ancient Mayan Ruins
You have your choice of a multitude of stunning archeological sites to visit, all within easy driving distance of this area of Mexico. If you and your partner like to stay active, choose a hiking tour that will take you through the jungle, where you’re more likely to spot exotic plants and wildlife. Those who prefer “drive-up service” can certainly opt for a less strenuous tour option as well. Popular sites like Tulum, Ek-Balam and Chitzen Itza grant visitors a glimpse at the mysterious world of the Mayan people.
Lounging at Playa Delfines This gorgeous beach has everything you and your partner need for a truly enjoyable day in a tropical locale: straw shade umbrellas and lounge chairs along a white sand beach with turquoise waters. Arm yourselves with a cooler of snacks and beverages and you’ll be set for a day of relaxation on what is regarded by many as Cancun’s most beautiful beach. Free bathrooms and showers are available, so after taking in an incredible sunset you’ll be able to freshen up and pay a visit to one of the area’s numerous restaurants right along the water. Dinner Boat Experience at Xoximilco If you and your sweetie are looking for a fun night out, Xoximilco is the perfect place to go! You’ll ride through a network of canals on a gondola-type boat, sampling food from Mexico’s different regions, playing games and enjoying unlimited drinks all evening. Don’t be surprised if you end up making friends with lots of other travelers on your boat and singing along with a mariachi band before night’s end! Expect plenty of laughter and good times at this often rowdy and always fun night-time experience. Swimming in Underground Rivers One of the natural highlights of the greater Playa del Carmen area are the many underground rivers and cavern swimming holes known as cenotes. These mesmerizing spots have an undeniably mysterious feel, with limited lighting giving you a peek at uniquely shaped rock formations and underground wildlife, like bats and small fish. Most visitors agree this activity is not for the faint hearted or the claustrophobic, so if you and your partner want to push your nerves or just love springing for an unusual activity off the beaten path while traveling, you’ll want to suit up and head to these cold underground rivers! Cooking Classes with Local Chefs Do more than just eat great food on your Mexican vacation; learn how to prepare it for yourself! You and your partner will really up your culinary game when you learn how to transform fresh ingredients and seemingly exotic spices into a tasty meal. During a tourist-oriented cooking class you’ll get to make homemade salsas and a big meal while sipping tequilas and chatting up other travelers in your group. You’ll take your newly acquired Mexican cooking skills home so you can drum up your favorite vacation memories in your own kitchen later! Self-Guided Tour Around Isla Mujeres
Located off the coast near Cancun, Isla Mujeres is an unassuming, small island that makes for an ideal, low-key day trip away from all the hustle and bustle of the more crowded tourist areas. Plan on exploring the island with your sweetie via golf cart–you won’t be able to help smiling all day as you scoot around a mix of paved roads, dirt pathways and beaches. If you’re into wildlife, be sure to visit Tortugranha, or “Turtle Farm,” where you’ll be able to see hundreds of turtles and maybe even help release babies into the wild. Playa del Norte is a great beach spot for relaxing after you enjoy a fresh seafood meal at one of many top-notch restaurants in the area. Romance Travel Magazine 9

Great Places for a Romantic Couples Getaway in the U.S. this Fall By James Meyer

Maui
Visiting Maui feels like walking off the plane into a faraway paradise, even though you’re still in the U.S. Maui is famous for its beyond-luxurious resorts, picture-perfect beaches and exotic jungle adventures–3 things that make Maui our top choice for spending some special time together with an extraspecial person. Compared with the other Hawaiian islands, Maui isn’t nearly as big as the Big Island, as busy as Oahu, as quiet as Kauai or as tiny as Lanai. In other words, it’s “just right” for many people, giving you a taste of almost everything you can find in Hawaii. Best of all, fall is the perfect time to visit Hawaii. You get pleasant weather without the big crowds and high rates.

Key West If you enjoy relaxing with your significant
other, Key West’s lazy beaches will feel like heaven. Yes, Key West has its share of tour-worthy historic homes and museums, but the experience here is mainly about soaking up the sun, snorkeling or scuba diving, and then going out for dinner and drinks in the evening. You’ll find the locals (“Conchs”) tend to be a bit eccentric; they’re famous for living in the moment...a perfect philosophy for a romantic getaway.
3
Kauai Hawaii’s “quiet island” is full of couples’ offerings.
You can stay in a private villa, relax on secluded beaches, and go for hiking adventures on the famous Na Pali Coast. Especially if you both love the pleasure of enjoying your environment, Kauai’s rainforests, mountains, beaches and cliffs will make you swoon. It’s an island that’s mastered seduction, with honey-dipped sunsets and aquamarine skies. You’ll find no tourist traps or extreme luxury here, either–Kauai is for the travelers who prefer nature to a surfeit of civilization. Resorts are not allowed to build higher than a coconut tree, the island has just 2 highways and many parts of the island can only be reached by foot.
4
Napa Valley The perfect romantic getaway for wine
lovers, Napa Valley is overflowing with luxurious hotels, cozy wine caverns and rolling vineyards. How could you go wrong with a trip to indulge in Napa Valley’s sweet harvest at one of many intimate venues, driving in on Highway 29 past the sign proclaiming “Wine is bottled poetry”? Napa Valley is no longer just a wine mecca; the hillsides and vineyards have brought in luxurious resorts that feature every possible indulgence.
5
Sedona It’s easy to feel the love when you’re looking
across miles and miles of landscape from atop red rocks. Hiking Sedona’s stunning sandstone buttes is the ultimate couples’ adventure, but it’s far from the only thing you can or should do here–the city is full of famous spas, the perfect place for a couple’s massage. Touching down in Sedona, you won’t take long to understand why the area is known as the most beautiful place in the country. The jagged sandstone, huge red rocks and perpetual blue sky have brought artists here for years. Go in fall, and you’ll enjoy the warm weather but without the scorching summer heat.
Cod’s 40 miles of shoreline give you plenty of space to go for long walks on the beach, while the slow pace of the area means you won’t be hassled by the stress of daily life as you focus on spending quality time together. (Only Cape Cod’s larger cities get Wi-Fi signals, so you’ll have an excuse to stay away from email.) Cape Cod is a favorite summer getaway for mainland New Englanders for a reason–it’s more affordable than Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard, and it has a quiet calm that leaves you relaxed.
7
Monterey If you’re looking to enjoy each other’s
company surrounded by lavish opulence, it’s hard to top Monterey. Whether it’s the gourmet dining or delectable red wine of Carmel-by-the-Sea or Point Lobos’ isolated natural beauty, Monterey blends luxury with relaxation. Time seems to slow down here, and the Monterey lifestyle is a blend of Southern California’s laid-back ways and Northern California’s sophistication. While the high real estate prices keep the population sparse near the area’s picturesque communities and jaw-dropping coast, it’s perfect for a romantic weekend or road-trip stop. You’ll find it has plenty of natural wonders to admire, luxury resorts to enjoy and (perhaps best of all) the seafood restaurants are without peer.
8
San Francisco For the urban couple, San Francisco
is a beautiful (and, when the weather cooperates) sundrenched metropolis to explore. It’s full of fascinating museums, eclectic shops and quaint, colorful neighborhoods. If you like wine, it’s also only a short drive away from Napa Valley’s world-class wineries. San Francisco’s biggest draw is for the freespirited who love edgy art, enjoy adventure and have a taste for interesting cuisine. With plenty of booming nightlife, jaw-dropping sights and restaurants to die for, it’s not hard to stay busy in San Francisco. You can spend some quality time sunning yourself with the sea lions in the bay (just bring a jacket, the weather changes fast any time of year) or strolling along the famous marina. You won’t need a car, either–sticking to public transportation is the smart choice here, including the city’s famous cable cars.
9
Lanai What could be more romantic than sharing a
remote, secluded island with your lover? The exclusivity of tiny Lanai makes it feel like you’re alone with Hawaii’s warm island breeze. Still, there are a handful of luxury hotels to satisfy your cravings for high-end cuisine (Lanai is the vacation destination of choice for many billionaires) or you can spend your time exploring the landscape. Just remember to rent a four-wheeldrive vehicle, since the island only has about 30 miles worth of paved roads.

The top 2 destinations for a romantic getaway are Puerto Vallarta and Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula. The two runners up are Cancun and Cozumel. All 4 locations offer stunning hotels complete with everything you might need to make that special trip perfect and something you’ll remember for years to come.
Puerto Vallarta Puerto Vallarta is a Mexican beach resort city situated on the Pacific Ocean’s Bahía de Banderas, or “Bay of Flags”. Puerto Vallarta has a long history dating back to 1851, the same year Seattle was founded. Puerto Vallarta’s proximity to the Bay of Flags, the agricultural valley of the Ameca River and the important mining centers in the Sierra have given the town a more interesting past than many other Mexican tourist destinations. Puerto Vallarta was a thriving Mexican village long before it became an international tourist destination. Tourism has become a major economic activity because of the climate, scenery, tropical beaches and rich cultural history.

Playa del Carmen – Yucatan Peninsula Much like Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen is a beautiful beach town. Located on the far east side of the country along the Yucatan Peninsula, it was originally a small fishing town. Tourism to Playa del Carmen began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel, an island across the Cozumel Channel known as a world-famous scuba diving destination. Now Playa del Carmen is a travel destination for many seeking fun in the sun as well as a quiet place to get away from it all.

Traditional Mexican Tortilla Soup Complements of Alfonso Peregrina, Executive Chef, Villas Del Palmar Resort at the Islands of Loreto I love to prepare soups, particularly in the fall. On my recent trip to Mexico our group enjoyed the Tortilla soup served for dinner at the Danzante Restaurant at the Villa del Palmar resort. The chef Alfonso Peregrinawas kind enough to share some history of the soup and the recipe. The Aztec soup, also known as tortilla soup, originated in ancient times in the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico. According to legends of those times, it’s said that the first tortilla was prepared by combining fresh corn with dried corn beans to satisfy an ancient Mayan King in the year 10,000 C. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish arrived in Mexico and brought the tradition of the soup and the chicken and spices to make soups and liquid preparations. Giving us “the beginning of culinary culture that uses bases of chicken broth, pork, beef, spices mixed with Mexican ingredients like chocolate, cacao, chili , beans, tomatoes, avacado, etc. Try the chef ’s recipe for Tortilla Soup.
• • • • • • • • • • • •
500 gr tomato 40 gr garlic 80 gr white onion 2 pieces of Guajillo Chile- clean, no seeds 4 pieces of tortilla strips 1 piece of avocado 100 gr of Panela cheese or fresh cheese 80 gr of zucchini blossom 60 gr sour cream Oil, salt and pepper for cooking process 2 lt of chicken broth 5 fresh Epazote leaves (Mexican herb)
Preparation 1. Heat 1 tbsp. vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook until translucent, 5 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic, the guajillo chili (cleaned with no seeds), tomatoes (cut in 4 pieces) and keep cooking for 10 minutes over low heat. Add 3 epazote leafs, and keep moving frequently. When it starts to become a tomato paste, add the chicken broth and increase heat to a gentle simmer. Cook for 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, add oil to a frying pan, set over medium heat. Add one-third (1/3) of the tortilla strips and cook until golden brown and crisp. With a slotted spoon, transfer strips to a paper towel-lined baking pan. Repeat with remaining tortilla strips in two batches. Sprinkle with 1 tsp of salt. Set aside. 3. Be careful about using a blender with hot liquids, let the soup preparation cool and then mix it in a blender. Return the liquid to a pot and keep the heat on high. Add salt and pepper and the 2 remaining epazote leaves. Let it boil until you get a real flavor. 4. For the soup, cut the avocado, panela cheese in cubes, the zucchini blossom fried with oil, garlic, onion, salt and pepper, the tortilla strips, guajillo strips. 5. You can put all the ingredients in the center of the soup bowl, add the hot soup preparation. Season to taste. Add a dollop of sour cream just before you serve it.

Interview with:
Rebecca Ickes Photographer & Owner, Rebecca Marie Photography & Design By: Donna Beasley I met Rebecca when she took the photos for a press kit for my upcoming book, Travel For Romance. I felt so comfortable getting to know her, sitting on the sofa in her studio and chatting over a steaming cup of tea. Rebecca is a professional wedding photographer who does an amazing job of capturing the moments of the big day. As I looked at her images I kept repeating, “wow”.
Rebecca, what prompted your interest in photography? I didn’t start out wanting to be a photographer. I gained a lot of experience in the arts. Photography for me is an excuse to make relationships with people. And more importantly, to remind them of the importance of the relationships in their life. I encourage them to put down the cell phone, leave the dishes and look at the people they care about and soak that in.
What made you specialize in wedding photography? Weddings is kind of the high point of relationships. It’s when you have all the people you love in one room. That doesn’t happen too often. People are pulled apart, families move to different parts of the world but they come together for weddings. And weddings are when people think of having a photographer. For me, we get to do everything. We’re the photo journalist documenting the moments that are happening. We take family portraits. And, we also do product photography with the rings and the cakes and everything that is going on. I really enjoy the fact that it is a very high-paced day.
if a couple lives and works in downtown Chicago, then our favorite locations are the bridges over the Chicago River. Its great because you get that feeling of being in the city without having the skyline shouting at you. That way you can focus on what’s really important in the photo, the people.
As an entrepreneur, what are your biggest challenges in business? What nobody told me when I started my business is that your brain never turns off. I was home this weekend, but still thinking about what I have to do on Monday. I’m constantly thinking about something business related even when I’m not in the office. I think that is the biggest challenge because you have to find a good balance between work and life.
What is your biggest success? I’ve had my business for 4 years so I count that as a success. Also, when we get an email from the mother of the bride or groom the Monday after the wedding saying, “you made our day easier, it wouldn’t have been the same without you. Thank you so much.” That, hands down, is our biggest success. And the next greatest thing is when someone says, “we just told our friends about you because it was such an amazing time and they’re going to hire you to photograph their family or wedding.” That’s a wonderful compliment to receive; when someone refers us to someone they care about.
What makes a memorable wedding photograph?
What advice would you give someone who wants to become a professional photographer?
First and foremost we look for emotion. On the wedding day you’re usually getting a wide-range of emotion. Excitement, laughter, extremely funny moments depending on your friends and the bridal party. Groomsmen tend to always bring a bit of humor in the game. But at the same time you’re getting strong emotion from parents, like father’s walking their daughter down the aisle. Or memories of family members who are missing that day.
To get started, the best thing to do is to second-shoot with someone already in business. Its very difficult to hang out your shingle and learn while you’re working. Its also quite unfair with the people you’re working with if you’re still trying to figure out the best way to use your camera. By working with someone already in business you’ll get a feel for what is really going on when you open a studio.
You get a lot of family history shared in one day and it is always quite touching to be invited to be part of that. And, I want to capture the images and emotions for future generations. As important as those photographs are to the couple getting married, in 10 or 30 years those photographs are going to be even more important. It’s a way for future generations to experience those moments.
The greatest shock for most people who did a second-shoot with us, meaning I’m the main photographer and they are assisting,is that I’m only behind the camera maybe 20% of the time. The rest of the time I’m in the office editing, marketing or preparing taxes or doing all those un-fun things that all businesses have to do.
When I look back on what has made a big impact on me, its that there are a lot of members of my own family I only got to know through photographs. Now I’m doing that for other families.
What other kinds of pictures do you like to take? When I first started taking up photography as a hobby, I took landscapes and things outdoors. My mom grew up on a farm that is still owned by my grandparents. So a huge challenge for me was documenting all these colors I was seeing in the sky on my grandpa’s farm. But now, as long as there are people involved, I’m happy. I did a bit of product photography at one point, but I kinda go crazy staring at like a cup sitting on a table. If there are people interacting and having relationships with each other, weddings, portraits, office Christmas parties, that’s where I’m really enjoying myself.
What would you like our readers to know about your work? We create photographs that can be made into an album or wall art, and that will stand the test of time. For us its about the people and creating a legacy and an heirloom to be handed down.

What is your favorite location for a shoot? It really depends on who is involved. For wedding couples, it might be a place they started dating. If we’re doing a portrait we want it to be a location about the story they want to tell. If it’s a couple whose engaged we’ll ask where was your first kiss or where they said,“I love you” for the first time. The location needs to speak to them, that family or that couple, rather than that’s a nice backdrop. If it means something to them, then the photos are going to mean something more. That being said, we do a lot of destination weddings in wonderful locations. But,
