Frosty fun at Winterlude in Ottawa

D

itch those dreams of sizzling sunshine and balmy beaches this winter; the friendly folks in Ottawa would love to demonstrate how much frosty fun you can have with snow and ice. Canada’s capital is making final preparations for Winterlude, a festival of cold that running for three consecutive weekends in February and expecting to attract more than 700,000 people this year. “This will be one of the best winter celebrations ever. This has become one of the most important winter events in Canada,” said Marcel Beaudry, chairman of the National Capital Commission, which organizes Winterlude. Since Winterlude’s inception in 1978, the centerpiece of the festival has always been the five-mile(7.8 km)-long Rideau Canal, the world’s longest groomed ice rink. Up to 100,000 people at a time wend their way along the canal, stopping off at special cafes and bars on the ice for hot chocolate or beavertails - long thin pastries covered in molten butter and then dunked in brown sugar and cinnamon. If you don’t fancy renting skates, you can always stand on the sidelines and watch the bed races, horse-drawn sleigh rides, waiter and waitress races, figure skating shows and other events planned for the canal and nearby Dows Lake. Winterlude is famous for the elaborate ice and snow sculptures that dot Ottawa and Hull, the town opposite the capital on the Ottawa River’s northern bank. Parliament Hill in central Ottawa will stage two snow sculpture competitions where 13 teams will be given 33 hours to do their best with blocks of snow 3.7 metres wide and 4.8 metres high. There will also be four ice carving exhibitions where sculptors armed with chain saws and other sharp instruments start with a 135 kg block of ice. All this and more in temperatures guaranteed to knock the senses out of anyone not wearing warm boots, a thick coat, gloves, scarves and a good hat. Ottawa is the world’s third coldest capital - only Ulan Bator in Mongolia and Astana in Kazakhstan are chillier - and in February the temperatures can on occasion dip to as low as minus 40 degrees. But Winterlude organizers scoff incredulously at the idea that this might somehow be considered unpleasant. “There is a lot of fun to be had outside. Of course, you can’t just sit on a bench because you’ll freeze,” said Claude Quinn, general manager of the Casino de Hull. “You go skating on the world’s longest skating rink, you see the ice sculptures, you’ll find coffee, hot chocolate and a lot of action. People don’t realize it’s cold.” Another way to warm up is to vote on which restaurant in Ottawa’s central Byward Market area makes the best stew. Other attractions include a hot air balloon festival and performances by European artists. This year you can take in shows by Danish puppeteers, British, Dutch and Finnish choirs and Spanish guitarists as well as entertainers from Belgium, Austria and Portugal. For children there is “North America’s largest snow playground” in Hull’s Jacques-Cartier Park, which will feature ice and snow sculptures, 30 snow slides, a maze and horse sleigh and dog sled rides. Winterlude begins this weekend and continues on February 11-13 and 18-20. For more details, check the special
