I WORK FROM INTUITION, WEAVING MY PRACTICE FROM WITHIN MYSELF, FROM MY VERY OWN SUBSTANCE

ROMINA CARREA

STATEMENT

I work from intuition, weaving my practice from within myself, from my very own substance. I perceive the visual arts beyond conventional divisions—as a whole—allowing different techniques and influences to coexist within my work.

I situate myself within the legacy and ideals of 19th-century Romanticism, drawing from the quiet perception of the Victorian era. My images invite an exploration of beauty, a search for the essence of form, a revelation of both strength and fragility.

I conceive images as gateways to my world, as trajectories that enable transformation. Yet, I also see them as objects within an intimate universe, substances residing in my memories—vessels of fleeting moments rescued from time.

CÓMO HACER DE ESTE PANTANO UN JARDÍN

“As a child, I played often and well. I remember one of my favorite games was losing myself in the endless closets of my home, searching for objects from other times. My mother was a great collector of things; I became an archaeologist of memories. And so, the pleasures of my private world became the material of my creation.”

“How to Turn This Swamp Into a Garden” is an exercise in memory, a journey woven through fragments that have survived the past—reminiscences of another life that resurface here and now to (re)signify existence in the present. Untangling the threads of memory means delving into the distant to interrogate what has come before, engaging in dialogue with the past to restore loss through the present. Photography, as a process of bringing images of remembrance to the surface, lays before us glimpses of a distant subjectivity—inviting us to inhabit it.

PERSEFONE

“To live is to continuously reduce the world to the body, through the symbolic meaning it embodies.”

From the beginning, this project has carried the nature of an emotional journey—an invitation to step into the next room, a reconstruction of desire and identity within a new context. How do I reassemble myself in unfamiliar space if not through sensation? How do I integrate if not by attuning to subtle shifts, as if the axis had turned?

I use myself as the only possible tool through which to speak, exposing myself to an external, floating gaze—one that lingers in the places where longing and vulnerability intersect. I consider all my works to be self-portraits, whether they depict my body or nature itself. Through them, I recognize the impressions that inhabit me, the fears and desires that attempt to bridge the irreconcilable distance between myself and my own being.

“Persephone” is a stroll through the shadows, a wandering through the toxicity of beauty—(re)framing other points of pleasure that reveal what remains alive.

A dilemma of body and longing.

UNA PIEDRA...

“A stone...”

The Stillness of Stone and the Effervescence of Thought

Stones—unassuming, elementary fragments of matter—are elevated and transformed into the substance of thought, reinterpreted on paper.

Drawing emerges as an idea taking form, acquiring an almost material quality: the magma of thought that, through the tenderness of touch, reconstructs an object as a metaphor for its movement.

It is thought captured in the burning instant of its genesis.
