RON C. ADRIANO architecture + design

2016

Hello! My name is Ron Adriano, a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. My passion for architecture is driven by a love for thoughtful design and meticulous craft - an interest which naturally extends into photography, barbering, and longboard building. I enjoy exploring the full extent of all tasks I encounter and find it difficult to leave anything unexamined. Through hard work, I have gained knowledge and skills which I have applied to the following works presented in this book.

MOUNTAIN FARMING VILLAGE design studio: fall 2015 c a mbr idge, onta r io

Through food production migrants are given the means to find purpose, gain a sense of belonging, and share wealth with others. The impact that migrants make upon the spaces they inhabit is unpredictable and uncontrollable. They bring with them a resourcefulness which they employ in all aspects of their life. For some, it is the cultivation of earth, for others it is the cultivation of space. This collective willingness to mold the spaces around them fosters a community unified by the individual desire to build a future. Throughout the building are common spaces, for the public and residents, allowing for the sharing of wealth and knowledge through food production, processing, consumption, and storage. The farming ramp, accessible to the public, brings together inhabitants of the building and the rest of the community by putting the majority of farming on one surface which effectively brings the ground up to each floor of the building.

architectural assistant: winter 2016 toronto, onta r io

A sample of the work I had completed during my time at MC Architects. The wall section and corresponding details describe a renovation involving a custom skylight connecting a new school gymnasium to the existing structure. As an architectural assistant, I completed a multitude of tasks from conceptual design sketches to designing and producing full construction drawing sets for school renovation projects. Part of my responsibilities also included compiling RFP documents, attending tender biddings, visiting the site for documentation and client meetings, selecting and preparing material pallets for presentations, and producing addendum drawings and change orders. Designing and drawing the featured sections and details required close coordination with the project architect, structural engineer, and spec writer. After an intensive iterative process these drawings were issued for tender.

RECOIL

come up to my room 2016 toronto, onta r io In collaboration with: Justin TK Ng, Eric Oh, Tristan Sito, and Felix Chan

Recoil dances with colour, shape, and shadow – one which breathes and moves with those beneath it. As part of the Gladstone Hotel’s Annual Come Up To My Room Alternative Design Exhibition, Recoil explores the capability of robotics, materials, and light to change the character of space. The installation is comprised of two independent systems acting upon a bubble wrap canopy. The two systems, LED lighting and an Arduino driven servo motor system, contribute and enhance the space through which visitors wander. The LED strips and bulbs gently bathe the hallway in a steady, yet changing cascade of lights – red, green, and blue – refracting off the bubble wrap. The motors move the canopy; changing the space between the visitor and dynamic surface above them. A special thanks to Professor Elizabeth English, Jonah Blaser, Lane Rick, Can Vu Bui, and the rest of F_RMLab. Without you, this installation would not have been possible.

TREEHOUSE design studio: winter 2015 toronto, onta r io

This library provides a place where one can seamlessly transition from reading, conversing, and crafting a certain project. As communities grow and adapt to contemporary life, many aspects of the traditional library have changed. In this digital age, the popularity of e-readers is rapidly gaining popularity, leaving the impression that printed reading material, along with the traditional library, is falling out of favor. Despite this, the essence of a library remains the same – it is a necessary hub of knowledge and resources, accessible to all within the community. With this essence in mind, Tree House, a combination between a library and workshop, addresses the need for there to be a center for self-motivated learning, whether it is through silent study, group discussion, or doing. Treehouse provides all three types of learning with a space which is quiet and separated, shared and open, and accommodating to mentorship and trial and error, respectively.

landschaftspark case study design studio: spring 2016 du isbu rg, ger ma ny

This case study examines the relationships ruin, nature, and interaction within re-purposed brown fields. The subject of this case study is the reappropriated park by Latz + Partner. Historically, the site was a part of larger industrial corridor along the Emscher River which served to produce and refine iron in the mid 1800’s. After the decline and eventual closure of many sites along the river, the area was left polluted and in economic decline. It was the goal of this park to revitalize the areas around it and, as part of a larger purification project, cleanse the Emscher River. The following abstractions of the project seek to examine the relationships between relics of the past, an accommodated return to nature, and the way it changes the social interactions of visitors when immersed in collective memory.

recyclone ssef 2015

r ich mond h i l l, onta r io In collaboration with: Eric Oh

The project takes advantage of the land left behind by big box stores while revitalizing the community and bringing the use of recycled steel to the attention of its riders and all people that encounter it. Often viewed as a tedious or strenuous activity, recycling has lost public interest. However, the recycling of steel is necessary in the preservation of resources and is present in our daily lives. The recent closing of numerous big box stores have left behind large plots of land and mass amounts of steel. ReCyclone, makes use of old train tracks and steel from defunct big box stores to create a rollercoaster in the suburban landscape. The rollercoaster itself is composed of numerous basic parts and connections which create intricacy from simplicity.
