Academic Work Design Studio - Spring 2019 Toronto, Ontario Supervisor: Andrew Levitt Images: view from furthest point south on wall (left), poolside (top), event space entrance corridor (bottom), pool and event building entrances (right)
Breakwater Pools is a project that begins with the end point of Toronto. The project’s goal is to strengthen the experiential narrative of leaving Toronto for the islands. It does this by re-calibrating the existing pier to align to the CN Tower. Once this sense of place is created, the event space and pool programs become more significant; they exist at a terminus. At this terminus, the project’s long concrete armature drops into Lake Ontario and visitors can place themselves in the larger systems of day & night, seasons, and patterns of erosion and deposition. As part of the comprehensive design studio, the building also engages problems of construction and sustainability strategies. These strategies include details in concrete and steel construction as well as energy and water conservation through solar hot water heating and rain water collection.

MOVEMENT OF WATER The new breakwater pier is not only an elevated walkway for visitors to see above the tree line. On a larger scale the building becomes a vehicle for land reclamation while, locally, the building is intended to behave as a viaduct. Introducing a breakwater wall of this size places the building in a larger conversation of land erosion and deposition in Lake Ontario. Over time, currents deposit sands from the Scarborough Bluffs to the East. On the West side of the structure, creates opportunity for deliberate land reclamation. On a local scale, the central concrete corridor takes advantage of it’s height and size to carry the heating & cooling, rainwater collection, and pool circulation systems of the building. The cavity underneath the public walkway houses rainwater collection, heating coils, and pool water supply pipes while the large columns allow for pipes to carry water down into the pools. The multiple levels of the structure also provide needed water pressure. The centre of the project oscillates between two programs, a market to the West and a theatre to the East, serving varying occupants at different times of day. The market acts as a transient centre that supports program around it by providing a place for people to purchase and eat food. At night, the centre shifts to the theatre, located in the Wellington Destructor Heritage building. Then, the centre no longer feeds the spaces around it and the relationship is inverted. Restaurants and bars provide places of interaction before and after shows while the ramps become promenades for visitors arriving and leaving the theatre.

Academic Work Design Studio - Fall 2018
A lamp designed to explore themes of the grotesque. The lamp itself is quite simple; hair is cast in resin and light is shone through. Knowing that the dynamic pattern - different from the pattern present when the lamp is off - is created by hair, triggers feelings of repulsion. However, before coming to this understanding, the lamp might evoke feelings of intrigue or
Supervisor: Michael Fohring
admiration. Perhaps, despite knowing that the lamp uses real human hair, you might still feel attracted to it in some way.

hair - a material that can measure anywhere between 30 to 100 micrometers. The result of this exploration, through the lens of the grotesque, is a space seeking to evoke the primal, beautiful, and surreal. The hair still evokes some level of repulsion, however, it leverages its ability to reveal detail and cast shadow to create a sense of movement and vitality.

M A N I F E S T O A man and a God; a scourge and a diplomat; the two forces of an empire are realized in Genghis Khan. Flexible yet firm, an individual yet a nation, his identity is in flux, in tension like the arc of a Mongolian Warbow. Grounded yet heavenly, effortless yet fearsome, his many faces are more akin to some deity of antiquity than a man on Earth. I was brought before such a man, my face kissing the earth. I expected he would ask for a portrait, or a sculpture, in exchange for my life. Yet when I volunteered the suggestion he laughed. “I am not a man for vanity or likeness, for what image could contain the countless faces of Genghis Khan? Your life will be worth a single chair, that will tell my story in all its forms,” he paused, “it will be the seat of the punishment that came from Heaven, and the sinew of this vast empire. It will be a testament to the ingenuity of my empire and a tribute to our call to conquest.”
Academic Work Chair Design Course Design & Build
The chair for Genghis Khan is designed to embody the many facets of its client; diplomatic and tyrannical, open yet intimidating, intelligent yet brutal. With traits like these in mind, we set out to create a throne for the Mongolian ruler that imposed a sense of robustness and power but also portability. In the process, we began drawing inspiration
Supervisor: Elizabeth English
from the Mongolian recurved bow. The result of our design process was a suspended chair
With: Eric Oh
utilizing a live joint to achieved curvature through kerfing. Throughout the design process, the course also demanded that we understand the complex structural forces at play within the chair. Included in these analyses were understanding the load bearing capacity of the chair and the degree to which varying sitting positions would affect the chair structurally. Roles were split evenly between structural calculations, fabrication and presentations.

Personal Work
Leatherworking has been a hobby/small business for roughly two years. I enjoy working at this scale of design because I can concentrate my efforts into something more accessible, easily understood, and experienced. Since each piece is made exclusively with hand tools, the design and fabrication process are time intensive and extremely deliberate. Each action relies completely on the success of the previous one and the success of each project relies on my ability to be rigorous in the making process.

I am drawn to film because it is a much more finite mode of photography. It demands that the photographer shoot sparingly and more thoughtfully about subject matter, composition, lighting, etc. These photos were taken during my time in Hong Kong, wandering the city, getting to know it through photography.
