HLW International llp intern: fall 2016

new york, new york

Some of the work I had completed during my time at HLW International LLP New York Office. These elevations and rendering are for a hotel [elevations] and condo master plan proposal. As a base building intern, my tasks ranged from participating in schematic design, such as the representation on the right, to producing Revit drawings for construction administration. In addition to being involved in the beginning and later phases of base building projects, I was also expected to independently produce drawings for submissions; often using previous drawings as precedent and co ordinating with structural drawings to ensure accuracy. As HLW is also an interior architecture firm, I also assisted in design and production of drawings for interior renovations.

mc architects

architectural assistant: winter 2016 toronto, onta r io

A sample of the work I had completed during my time at MC Architects. The wall section and corresponding details describe a renovation involving a custom skylight connecting a new school gymnasium to the existing structure. As an architectural assistant, I completed a multitude of tasks from conceptual design sketches to designing and producing full construction drawing sets for school renovation projects. Part of my responsibilities also included compiling RFP documents, attending tender biddings, visiting the site for documentation and client meetings, selecting and preparing material pallets for presentations, and producing addendum drawings and change orders. Designing and drawing the featured sections and details required close coordination with the project architect, structural engineer, and spec writer. After an intensive iterative process these drawings were issued for tender.

BoomBOX

DESIGN STUDIO: sPRING 2016 c a mbr idge, onta r io In collaboration with: Giulia Kiernan, Daniella Lopes, Steven Lin, Monica Patel, and Ethan Shwartz

Boombox is an experiment in permeability and adaptability. The project explores the idea of a light wood structure, able to define and frame space, and it’s natural ability to be appropriated. The structure was assembled in roughly one week using a combination of joints, nails, and adhesive. While the fame is light, strategic placement of shear walls and density of joints created a structure of considerable strength. Musical elements are mechanically supported by the structure as sound penetrates out from the pavilion into the surrounding space. The activation of the courtyard invites people towards it and encourages informal musical collaboration and its associated activities such as dance.

transmute

DESIGN STUDIO: sPRING 2016 french r iver, onta r io

The time scale of our relationship to Canada transcends the period in which our own personal histories come into contact with Canadian Soil. Transmute, as the Truth and Reconciliation headquarters, is a place where Non-Aboriginals can reconnect with Aboriginals and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be Canadian – historically and culturally. As Canadians, we often forget that our history includes a history that is older than Confederation – despite it having been severed through the breaking of treaties, unfair acquisition of land, and cultural genocide through the Residential School system. The Canadian Shield is as loud as it is beautiful - the building attempts to reconcile this with silence. In doing this, it hopes to define a space where Aboriginal Canadian history is acknowledged and honoured and where the future can be contemplated. By excavating into the site and creating a void around the building, the relationship between the visitor and nature is immersed and separate – reading as rock face, void, threshold, and finally, the visitor. The excavated rock is also transposed and placed into a central courtyard – allowing for light, but also a different reading of the material which makes up the Canadian Shield.

RECOIL

come up to my room 2016 toronto, onta r io In collaboration with: Justin TK Ng, Eric Oh, Tristan Sito, and Felix Chan

Recoil dances with colour, shape, and shadow – one which breathes and moves with those beneath it. As part of the Gladstone Hotel’s Annual Come Up To My Room Alternative Design Exhibition, Recoil explores the capability of robotics, materials, and light to change the character of space. The installation is comprised of two independent systems acting upon a bubble wrap canopy. The two systems, LED lighting and an Arduino driven servo motor system, contribute and enhance the space through which visitors wander. The LED strips and bulbs gently bathe the hallway in a steady, yet changing cascade of lights – red, green, and blue – refracting off the bubble wrap. The motors move the canopy; changing the space between the visitor and dynamic surface above them.

recyclone ssef 2015

r ich mond h i l l, onta r io In collaboration with: Eric Oh

The project takes advantage of the land left behind by big box stores while revitalizing the community and bringing the use of recycled steel to the attention of its riders and all people that encounter it. Often viewed as a tedious or strenuous activity, recycling has lost public interest. However, the recycling of steel is necessary in the preservation of resources and is present in our daily lives. The recent closing of numerous big box stores have left behind large plots of land and mass amounts of steel. ReCyclone, makes use of old train tracks and steel from defunct big box stores to create a roller coaster in the suburban landscape. The roller coaster itself is composed of numerous basic parts and connections which create intricacy from simplicity.

MOUNTAIN CO-OP design studio: fall 2015 c a mbr idge, onta r io

Through food production migrants are given the means to find purpose, gain a sense of belonging, and share wealth with others. The impact that migrants make upon the spaces they inhabit is unpredictable and uncontrollable. They bring with them a resourcefulness which they employ in all aspects of their life. For some, it is the cultivation of earth, for others it is the cultivation of space. This collective willingness to mold the spaces around them fosters a community unified by the individual desire to build a future. Throughout the building are common spaces, for the public and residents, allowing for the sharing of wealth and knowledge through food production, processing, consumption, and storage. The farming ramp, accessible to the public, brings together inhabitants of the building and the rest of the community by putting the majority of farming on one surface which effectively brings the ground up to each floor of the building.

Iconography: spring 2016 The 2B Iconography is an annual tradition at the School of Architecture. In the Spring of 2016, a small crew 16 students performed Salome, a play by Oscar Wilde. My roles in the play included directing, co-producing, playing the role of male lead. The experience required extensive coordination and time management in order to ensure that all aspects (set, costume, music, lighting) were fully developed in time for opening night.
