The above works are taken from a cross country lodge (left) and an interior renovation for an old church rectory (right). As an architectural assistant at Heitler Houstoun Architects my role consisted of tasks similar to those of a junior designer within the structure of the firm. My tasks primary consisted of being responsible for producing most drawings in SD, DD, and CD phases as well as visualization for SD phases of projects. My role also extended in to correspondence with material representatives, site surveying, and producing schedules and some product specifications.

Some of the work I had completed during my time at HLW International LLP New York Office. The roof details (left)are taken from an institutional project. The elevations and rendering are for a hotel and condo master plan proposal. As a base building intern, my tasks ranged from participating in schematic design, such as the representation on the right, to producing Revit drawings for construction administration. In addition to being involved in the beginning and later phases of base building projects, I was also expected to independently produce drawings for submissions; often using previous drawings as precedent and co ordinating with structural drawings to ensure accuracy. Scope of my work also covered interior renderings and schematic floor plan proposals.

These wall sections and corresponding details are taken from a renovation involving a custom skylight connecting a new school gymnasium to the existing structure. As an architectural assistant, I completed a multitude of tasks from conceptual design sketches to designing and producing full construction drawing sets for school renovation projects. Part of my responsibilities also included compiling RFP documents, attending tender biddings, visiting the site for documentation and client meetings, selecting and preparing material pallets for presentations, and producing addendum drawings and change orders.

The Destructor Complex seeks to explore the combination of time sensitive community program and its ability to respond to adjacent spaces throughout the day. It proposes a means of discovering an identity through the convergence of heritage, working, living, and leisure through cultural production. The centre of the project oscillates between two programs, a market to the West and a theatre to the East, which serve varying occupants at times where they are most present. The market is the transient centre that supports program around it by providing a place for people to purchase and eat food. At night, the centre shifts to the theatre, located in the Wellington Destructor Heritage building. Then, the centre no longer feeds the spaces around it and the relationship is inverted. Restaurants and bars provide places of interaction before and after shows while the ramps become promenades for visitors arriving and leaving the theatre.

The impact that migrants make upon the spaces they inhabit is unpredictable. They bring with them a resourcefulness which they employ in all aspects of their life. This collective willingness to mold the spaces around them fosters a community unified by the individual desire to build a future. Throughout the building are common spaces, for the public and residents, allowing for the sharing of knowledge through food production, processing, and consumption. The public farming ramp brings together residents and the rest of the community by putting the majority of farming on one surface - effectively bringing the ground up to each floor of the building.

Porta-Party challenges existing notions of the temporary public washroom as an essential part of public gathering and as a space in and of itself. Spaces of interaction, circulation, and privacy are created using different orientations of potties as well as an artificial landscape composed of sod, pallets, and plants. Various zones of plantings create a range of tactile and sensual experiences which combined, which combined with pallet organization, direct people into and through the installation. Atmosphere is then layered upon the space with the use of integrated sound, lighting, and smoke machines. As construction lead, my role was to design the landscape modules and methods for the integration of smoke boxes and sound controls during the design development phases and construction phases of the project. My role also extended into methods for set up and take down of the installation so to ensure the most efficient use of time within our compressed time frame.

The time scale of our relationship to Canada transcends the period in which our own personal histories come into contact with Canadian soil. Transmute, as the Truth and Reconciliation headquarters, is a place where Non-Aboriginals can reconnect with Aboriginals and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be Canadian – historically and culturally. The Canadian Shield is as loud as it is beautiful - the building attempts to reconcile this with silence. In doing this, it hopes to define a space where a deeper Canadian history is acknowledged and honoured and where the future can be contemplated. By excavating into the site and creating a void around the building, the relationship between the visitor and nature is immersive and separate allowing for a different reading of the earth beneath us.

ReCyclone takes advantage of the land left behind by big box stores while revitalizing the community and bringing the use of recycled steel to the attention of all people that encounter it. Often viewed as a tedious or strenuous activity, recycling has lost public interest. However, the recycling of steel is necessary in the preservation of resources and is present in our daily lives. The recent closing of numerous big box stores have left behind large plots of land and mass amounts of steel. ReCyclone, makes use of old train tracks and steel from defunct big box stores to create a roller coaster in the suburban landscape. The roller coaster itself is composed of numerous basic parts and connections which create intricacy from simplicity.

Hair is the object of identity, beauty, fertility, and youth among many things. Yet, once it is removed, it’s value is lost and it becomes abject and unwanted. Clipped hair is seen as dirty, disgusting, gross, etc. Hair Lamp No.1 is an object which explores qualities of clipped hair when cast in resin. Length, colour, density, ad material quality all contribute to the way in which the composite resists its common reaction of repulsion. This prototype is cast with brown hair with a slight amber tome. A bulb producing white light is filtered through the hair and becomes warm and intimate. The resulting feeling of grotesquerie ultimately questions our preconceived notions of aesthetic.

the studio barber Three years of barbering have taught me much about craft, the importance of self critique, and client relationships. Much of the process runs parallel to what we do in the profession of architecture. Each haircut is careful, considerate of context, developed with the client, and meticulously crafted using skills acquired over time.

longboards However simple it may appear, the longboard does not express it function when static - their beauty can only be experience during the ride. Each board I construct considers the user’s weight, height, style of riding, and overall aesthetic. The two images above are 2 of 5 longboards I have built. The first, intended for aggressive downhill riding, is built to withstand greater forces. The second is much thinner and longer in order to allow the rider to weave left and right. The way it flexes recalls the origins of longboarding found in surfing.
