The Timber Co-operative reconsiders building materials while synchronising building practices with sustainable forest management. By only building with avaiable mature tree stock to ensure maximum carbon sequestration, the Timber Co-op building grows slowly over time. Horse logging, careful monitoring of avaliable tree species, and tree planting in the Bas-Saint-Laurent ensures that the practice remains sustainable and productive. The Co-op also aids in providing housing for residents of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region who must relocate due to the rising shoreline. Each dwelling is made of modular panels that are prefabricated in the Timber Co-op building and can be scaled up in size to respond to the size of the residents. Both the Timber Co-op building and the dwellings utilise the mechanics of thermal mass to drive buancy ventilation to achieve comfortable interior conditions in future, high temperature climate conditions.

Academic Work Design Studio - Spring 2021 (ongoing) Bali, Indonesia Supervisor: Mariel Collard Arias Team: Naomi Julien Image: Cotton cropland (orange) and pesticide use (tonnes) in Southeast Asia
A Textile Story is a research project that documents the global network of cotton and its manifestation the sacred textile, the Geringsing, in Tenganan, Bali. The goal of this research is to understand how Geringsing manufacting practice participates in the active conservation of local ecology. The images chosed to represent this research illustrate the multi-scalar processes that result in the production of the fabric. From large scale cotton agriculture using unconceivable amounts of agrochemicals, documenting availability of natural dye plants on Bali by elevation, harvesting of Candlenut seeds, and the dyeing of the fabric itself, the practice relies on the complex relationship of global industry and local sustainable cultivation of plants for its success. Through this study, we being to understand the varying effects of the Anthropocene and alternative methods for cultural production begin to be revealed.

Breakwater Pools is a project that begins with the end point of Toronto. The project’s goal is to strengthen the experiential narrative of leaving Toronto for the islands. It does this by re-calibrating the existing pier to align to the CN Tower. Once this sense of place is created, the event space and pool programs become more significant; they exist at a terminus. At this terminus, the project’s long concrete armature drops into Lake Ontario and visitors can place themselves in the larger systems of day & night, seasons, and patterns of erosion and deposition. As part of the comprehensive design studio, the building also engages problems of construction and sustainability strategies. These strategies include details in concrete and steel construction as well as energy and water conservation through solar hot water heating and rain water collection.

The Destructor Complex explores the combination of time sensitive community

The centre of the project oscillates between two programs, a market to the West and a theatre to the East, serving varying occupants at different times of day. The market acts as a transient centre that supports program around it by providing a place for people to purchase and eat food. At night, the centre shifts to the theatre, located in the Wellington Destructor Heritage building. Then, the centre no longer feeds the spaces around it and the relationship is inverted. Restaurants and bars provide places of interaction before and after shows while the ramps become promenades for visitors arriving and leaving the theatre.

M A N I F E S T O A man and a God; a scourge and a diplomat; the two forces of an empire are realized in Genghis Khan. Flexible yet firm, an individual yet a nation, his identity is in flux, in tension like the arc of a Mongolian Warbow. Grounded yet heavenly, effortless yet fearsome, his many faces are more akin to some deity of antiquity than a man on Earth. I was brought before such a man, my face kissing the earth. I expected he would ask for a portrait, or a sculpture, in exchange for my life. Yet when I volunteered the suggestion he laughed. “I am not a man for vanity or likeness, for what image could contain the countless faces of Genghis Khan? Your life will be worth a single chair, that will tell my story in all its forms,” he paused, “it will be the seat of the punishment that came from Heaven, and the sinew of this vast empire. It will be a testament to the ingenuity of my empire and a tribute to our call to conquest.”

The chair for Genghis Khan is designed to embody the many facets of its client; diplomatic and tyrannical, open yet intimidating, intelligent yet brutal. With traits like these in mind, we set out to create a throne for the Mongolian ruler that imposed a sense of robustness and power but also portability. In the process, we began drawing inspiration

from the Mongolian recurved bow. The result of our design process was a suspended chair utilizing a live joint to achieved curvature through kerfing. Throughout the design process, the course also demanded that we understand the complex structural forces at play within the chair. Included in these analyses were understanding the load bearing capacity of the chair and the degree to which varying sitting positions would affect the chair structurally. Roles were split evenly between structural calculations, fabrication and presentations.

exclusively designed by DEFT and during my time with the firm, my team was in charge of

this location. The challenge of this project was to design a storefront that also integrated the back

of the hair stations - an element not originally designed to be seen. This would also be the first location with a true storefront. Our final design featured vertical louvers that bulge into the gallery area of the mall with glass and lights animating the spaces in between them. Passers-by becoming customers as the are attracted to the flickering lights and slits revealing the events inside. On my team of 3, including 1 principal and another intern, my

role was to design the layout of the space and the storefront itself.

A private apartment for a small family in Hong Kong. As part of the design team for

this project, my primary focus was on their child’s bedroom and kitchen space in the early

the child’s room where built-in floor storage can be flexibly converted into a play-space with the use of double sided lids. Each storage compartment is closed with an unconnected

Professional Work
This skylight retrofit project was done as part of an new addition to an existing school
MC Architects
building in Eastern Ontario. The new wing of the building was built adjacent to the existing

teacher’s lounge and, to take advantage of the space in between, the lounge was extended

into the interstitial space between the wings. My team was to develop the details for this skylight retrofit while considering the challenge of structural and building envelope integrity.

Personal Work Film Photography
Many people choose to shoot photography on film because of the limited amount of shots it allows you to take, making the value of each photo greater. This was the reason I started taking photos on film. This summer, I started developing and scanning my own film negatives and began to appreciate the science involved in the process. My photographic process now considering developing techniques even before I start shooting a roll of film.
