MARGO WOLOWIEC
Alarm, 2017 Handwoven polymer, linen, dye sublimation ink, and acrylic ink 24 x 20 in. Gallery Partner: Jessica Silverman Gallery Retail: $8,000 Reserve: $3,500 100% donation to Root Division
Bid On This Item
Though we perceive them as paintings, Margo Wolowiec’s works are in fact intricate loom-woven textiles infused with images via dye-sublimation transfer. Her most recent series “Storm Systems” are constructed from amalgamations of found forecast graphics and texts related to recent catastrophic storms and their aftermath, they draw a line between the realities of climate change, its causes, and broader implications for our society. Of late, Wolowiec has been reflecting on water contamination and water quality—a major issue for the Detroit-based artist. Images of droplets of water and cloud-filled skies are complicated during the weaving process, accumulating tech-failure traits like a faulty satellite TV image. The resulting works move between passages of legibility and pure abstraction. Other productive frictions include beauty versus politics, information versus knowledge, word versus picture, and the colliding histories of painting, photography, textiles, and sculpture.

Every stroke is my emotional connection to the lines and colors to form a multidimensional, symmetrical vibrant scene – inviting viewers to dive into a world where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary. Each piece is a testament to the beauty of abstraction, where the mind is free to wander, explore and find meaning within the intricate dance of shapes and colors. I draw inspiration from nature, the patterns, the landscapes, the sky, my emotions, feelings and my Indian heritage that’s an infinite array of vivid colors. I paint daily, trying to lose myself in the process, often failing. I’m not normally worried about a finished product. I usually know when a painting communicates to me. For me, painting is not therapy, nor work, but rather a creative, oftentimes playful act that sometimes in its process, rewards.

PETER FOUCAULT
Untitled, 2023 Recycled museum wall text vinyl on MDF 6 x 8 in. Retail: $750 Reserve: $100
Bid On This Item
Recycled museum wall text vinyl on MDF. Peter Foucault creates works on paper, videos, and installations that are fueled by his love of drawing and mark making. He has created a series of Drawing-Projects, which utilize systems developed by the artist that produce complex abstract compositions. At the root of these projects is a constant tension between control and the loss of control. Viewer interactivity plays an integral part in his drawing installations, large-scale artworks in which participants influence the outcome of a drawing that is created by a small robot over the duration of an event or exhibition. His work is concept driven, and often utilizes objects that reference printmaking and multiplicities.

To my Black skin—my strongest ally, I was inspired by the reading of Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. “It was awful to be a Negro and have no control over my life. It was brutal to be young and already trained to sit quietly and listen to charges brought against my color with no chance of defense.” With each brush stroke of this painting, Maya Angelou made me realize that my skin is not darkness or void of light. But yet my skin, my blackness is light. I am a reflection. I am the reason the stars light up at night. I am what you are willing not to understand. I am light. Black is light. As seen on the L Word Generation Q, Season 3, Episode 2.
