Root Division is a visual arts non-profit located in the SoMa District of San Francisco. We connect creativity and community through a dynamic ecosystem of arts education, exhibitions, and studios. Our mission is to empower artists, foster community service, inspire youth, and enrich the Bay Area through engagement in the visual arts. Root Division is a launching pad for artists, a stepping stone for educators, a door to creativity for youth, and a bridge for the public to become involved in the arts.

MY TWO HOMES

The My Two Homes Project is an arts education curriculum developed by Root Division and taught by the Latinx Teaching Artist Fellows (LTAFs) to students in the ExCel Program at Mission Education Center. The goal of the project is to enable creative exploration of the emotional and social transitions experienced by recently migrated youth. This year, fellow artists Indira Urrutia and Sofia Sinibaldi collaborated with 100 new students from Mission Education Center, using a variety of techniques and materials to focus on the celebration of family, tradition, home and identity in its many forms. Introducing a wide range of mediums was equally important and consequently, students were exposed to collage, printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, tie-dye and tracing. Over the course of a year-long exchange, students developed many projects that reflect the creative work of the students collectively but also individually. The students worked together in the design, concept and ideas behind a wall that divides the country where they come from and the United States. The goal of the classes and projects was to integrate conceptual thinking in the projects based on students’ memories and experiences in their country of origin and San Francisco.

MIS DOS HOGARES

El Proyecto Mi Dos Hogares es un currículo de educación artística desarrollada por Root Division y enseñado por las Artistas Profesoras Latinas (LTAFs) para estudiantes del programa Excel en la escuela primaria Mission Education Center. El objetivo del proyecto es permitir la exploración creativa de las transiciones emocionales y sociales experimentadas por los jóvenes recientemente emigrados. Este año, las profesoras y artistas Indira Urrutia y Sofia Sinibaldi colaboraron con 100 estudiantes de Mission Education Center, usando una variedad de técnicas enfocadas en exaltar el concepto de familia, hogar, tradiciones e identidad de diversas maneras. La variedad de técnicas compartidas con los estudiantes fue tan importante como el haberlos introducido a cada uno de los temas elegidos. Los estudiantes aprendieron a hacer collage, impresión con tinta, escultura, dibujo, pintura, trazado y tie-dye. A lo largo del año se desarrollaron varios proyectos, cada uno de ellos refleja el trabajo creativo de los niños tanto de manera individual como colectiva. Los estudiantes trabajaron juntos en el diseño, concepto e ideas detrás de una pared que divide el país de donde cada uno viene con los Estados Unidos. La finalidad de las clases y proyectos fue el propiciar que se hiciera una relación conceptual entre arte, los estudiantes y sus historias personales de vida que son una mezcla del “allá” y del “aca”. La inspiración principal de los proyectos se basó en los recuerdos y experiencias de los niños acerca de su país de origen y San Francisco.

LATINX TEACHING-ARTIST FELLOWSHIP

ABOUT THE LATINX TEACHING-ARTIST FELLOWSHIP

As part of our effort to more accurately reflect neighborhood diversity in our Studio Artist community and teaching core, Root Division launched the Latinx Teaching Artist Fellowship (LTAF) in Fall 2010. With additional funding for the program in 2012, 2013, and 2015 from the San Francisco Arts Commission / Community Investments, we have been able to support two Latino Teaching Artist Fellows. We recruit Latinx artists who speak both English and Spanish fluently, have experience teaching youth, and have a strong studio practice. The LTAFs receive a free studio space at Root Division’s facility for a year in exchange for teaching at Mission Education Center, a K-5 public school, which serves students who recently immigrated from Latin-America. As part of a year-long artist-teacher in residency, the LTAF teaches a dedicated curriculum called My Two Homes to each grade level at the school. My Two Homes is a 10-Month project that investigates and navigates the immigration process, in particular the move from one home to another. The fellowship is a mutually beneficial response to the needs of this school population, while simultaneously creating professional opportunities for Latinx artists.

ACERCA DE LA BECA DE ARTISTA PROFESOR LATINX

Como parte de nuestro esfuerzo de reflejar con mayor precisión la diversidad del barrio de nuestra comunidad en nuestros artistas y enseñanza, Root Division puso en marcha la Beca para Artista Profesor Latinx (BAPL) en el otoño del 2010. Con financiamiento adicional en 2012, 2013, y 2015 de la San Francisco Arts Commission / Inversiones Comunitarias, tuvimos la oportunidad de ofrecer la beca a dos artistas latinos. Reclutamos a artistas latinos que hablan Inglés y Español, que tienen experiencia educando a jóvenes y además de una práctica artística de taller sólida. El BAPL recibe un espacio de taller gratis por un año en Root Division a cambio de dar clases de arte en Mission Education Center--una escuela pública de Kinder a Quinto que da servicios a estudiantes que emigraron recientemente de América Latina. Durante la residencia de artista-profesor de un año, el BAPL enseña un currículo llamado

“Mis Dos Hogares” a cada uno de los niveles de grado de la escuela. Mis Dos Hogares es un proyecto de 10 meses que explora y navega el proceso de inmigración, en particular la mudanza de un hogar a otro. La beca es una respuesta a las necesidades de esta población escolar. Esta beca no solo beneficia a los estudiantes, pero también crea oportunidades profesionales para artistas latinos.

MISSION EDUCATION CENTER

ABOUT THE MISSION EDUCATION CENTER

Mission Education Center (MEC) is one of several “newcomer programs” developed in response to the continuing influx of immigrants to San Francisco, providing a safe learning environment for children to learn skills for success in a U.S. classroom. Instruction at MEC is mostly in Spanish for this one year before students are mainstreamed into other SFUSD schools. MEC has some visual art instruction, but we saw the school’s need for Spanishspeaking teaching-artists with relevant life experience. We knew that recruiting for artists with this particular background could also help address our challenge of connecting not only with students and staff, but also families, making our programs relevant to our area.

ACERCA DE MISSION EDUCATION CENTER

Mission Education Center (MEC) es uno de varios programas creados para estudiantes “recién llegados” en respuesta al continuo influjo de inmigrantes a San Francisco. Este programa proporciona un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro para que los niños aprendan las habilidades que necesitan para tener éxito en un salón de clases en los Estados Unidos. La enseñanza en MEC es mayormente en español durante el primer año antes de que los estudiantes se integren en las otras escuelas del Distrito Escolar, las cuales no siempre tienen amplio apoyo para estudiantes que hablan Inglés como segundo idioma. El MEC tiene algunas clases de artes visuales, pero vimos que la escuela necesitaba artistas-educadores hispanohablantes con experiencia de vida similar a la de los estudiantes. Sabíamos que el contratar artistas con este tipo de experiencia también podría ayudar a abordar el desafío de crear relaciones no sólo con los estudiantes y el personal de MEC, si no también con las familias, y hacer a nuestros programas relevantes para nuestra área.

During the beginning of the year, students spoke a lot about the wall between the US and Mexico. In response to the political outcome of the 2016 presidential election, we decided to open the conversation and recreate the border on the north and south side.

ExCEL AT MISSION EDUCATION CENTER

ABOUT ExCEL AT MISSION EDUCATION CENTER

The after school program was started in the spring of 2007 and is dedicated to serving a diverse population of Latino newcomer students. The program operates Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 6:30pm and it serves 100 students daily. During the week students participate in a variety of academic enrichment and recreation activities. The program offers various enrichment classes throughout the school year; cooking, art, gardening, dance, academic games, and STEM. Our newcomer students need support to help them adjust and transition to their new country. The goals are to create a learning environment that is welcoming and engaging to students and families and to support newcomer students through their transition. Students engage and are exposed to a variety of academic, enrichment, and recreation activities that will allow them to build skills that will help them in the future. The students are very eager and excited to learn, and they have a strong willingness to succeed.

ACERCA DE ExCEL EN MISSION EDUCATION CENTER

El programa de después de escuela se inició en la primavera del 2007 y está dedicado a servir a una población de estudiantes Latinos recién llegados. El programa opera de Lunes a Viernes de las 3:30 a las 6:30pm y provee servicio a un grupo 100 alumnos diariamente. Durante la semana los alumnos participan en una variedad de actividades académicas de enriquecimiento y recreación. El programa ofrece varias clases durante el año escolar tales como cocina, arte, jardinería, poesía, danza, juegos académicos, teatro y ciencia. Estos estudiantes recién llegados necesitan mucho apoyo, consejo y asistencia para adaptarse y hacer una transición a su nuevo país. Los objetivos son crear un ambiente de aprendizaje que da la bienvenida a los estudiantes y a las familias, y apoyar a los estudiantes recién llegados durante su transición.

Our partnership with Root Division and the My Two Homes Project/LTAF has become part of our programming at Mission Education Center and my hope is that this project is always offered to all of our students. I can’t imagine our arts program without the My Two Homes Project/LTAF. Every school year our students participate in a year long art residency, we are matched with two amazing artists who are talented and have a passion for our community. Our students are always excited and engaged in their weekly classes. Indira and Sofia have connected well with our students and they have inspired them to create beautiful pieces of art. FELLOW ARTIST:

Indira Urrutia is a Chilean-born artist who immigrated to New Haven, Connecticut in 1986 with her entire family. She graduated in 1994, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Studio Art in Photography from Southern Connecticut State University. Since then she has followed her passion for photography with explorations into other formats such as mixed media, installation art, and experimental video. Her passion for teaching allows her to transmit the importance of free artistic expression in a safe environment and guide the students in experimenting with their own creativity.

In 2012, Indira came back to the Bay Area after a four-year bicycle journey that brought across thirteen countries of the American continent, from San Francisco to Chilean Patagonia. She is co- founder of the project 2Greenprints.org, an itinerant photographic project which moves on bicycles across the American Continent (From Alaska to the Chilean Antarctic) in search of natural, social and cultural values that characterize the countries of the American Continent.

Upon her return to San Francisco, she got involved at the Red Poppy Art House as a Leadership Member for one year and continued for another year as full-time Creative Director in June of 2013. Indira also teaches in the public program at The de Young Museum. She is co-founder of Mi Cultura Art Project, an inquiry based educational initiative that provides programming and workshops about the diverse cultures around the world.

INDIRA URRUTIA

Indira Urrutia es una artista chilena que emigró con su familia a New Haven, Connecticut en 1986. Licenciada en Ciencias de Estudio del Arte y Fotografía de la Universidad del Sur del Estado de Connecticut. 1994, Desde entonces ha seguido su pasión por la fotografía con exploraciones en otros formatos como mix media, instalaciones de arte y video experimental. Su pasión por la enseñanza le permite transmitir la importancia de la expresión artística libre en un ambiente seguro y así guiar a los estudiantes en la experimentación con su propia creatividad

En 2012, Indira volvió al área de la bahía después de un viaje de cuatro años en bicicleta que la llevo a través de trece países del continente americano, (San Francisco 2008 - Patagonia Chilena 2012). De este viaje surgió el proyecto 2Greenprints.org; proyecto fotográfico itinerante que se desplazó en bicicleta a través del continente americano en busca de valores naturales, sociales y culturales que caracterizan a los países del Continente Americano.

A su regreso a San Francisco, participó como voluntaria con el centro de arte Red Poppy Art House por un periodo de un año y continuó por otro año más como Directora Creativa a tiempo completo en junio de 2013. Hoy Indira Urrutia enseña en el programa público de The De Young Museum. Es co-fundadora de la organización Mi Cultura Art Project, proyecto educativo basado en el intercambio cultural por medio de la fotografía y actividades de arte.

FELLOW ARTIST:

Sofia Sinibaldi grew up in Guatemala and came to San Francisco to study fine arts at the San Francisco Art Institute. When making sculptures she utilizes many found objects and enjoys seeing how these morph throughout the art making process. She’s constantly thinking about how “things” are being consumed by humans and how we interact with these “things” - how something we see in the street can become so autobiographical, slowly clinging to the body, becoming an extension of ourselves, some sort of prosthetic.

After graduating from SFAI in 2016, she became involved with Root Division where she continued making art and got involved with teaching. She has learned and loved the experience of exchanging knowledge not only from teacher to student but the other way around as well.

SOFIA SINIBALDI

Sofia Sinibaldi nació en Guatemala y vino a San Francisco a estudiar arte en San Francisco Art Institute. Cuando hace escultura ella utiliza muchos objetos encontrados y le interesa ver cómo esos objetos se van transformando durante el proceso del arte. Siempre está pensando en cómo los objetos están siendo consumidos por humanos y como interactuamos con estos objetos. Algo que uno encuentra en la calle se puede volver tan autobiográfico, se va lentamente adjuntando al cuerpo-- volviéndose una extensión de nosotros, como un prostético.

Después de graduarse de SFAI en 2016, se involucró con Root Division en donde continuó haciendo arte y empezó a enseñar. Ella ha aprendido y valorado bastante esta experiencia de intercambiar sabiduría no solo de maestro a alumno pero también el inverso.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN MARBLED PAPER COMO HACER TO PROPIA PAPEL MARMOLADO

MATERIALS:

- Watercolor paper

- Dyes

- Q-tips

- Tray/Shallow Dish

- Almond milk

STEP 1:

Put the almond milk inside the tray and add different colors of dye to the milk without mixing the dyes or the milk.

MATERIALES:

- Papel de Acuarela

- Tintas

- Isopos

- Plato hondo/ contenedor

- Leche de Almendra

PASO 1:

Ponga la leche de almendra dentro del contenedor y agregue diferentes colores de tinta a la leche sin mezclar la leche o la tinta.

STEP 2:

Grab a Q-tip and slowly move the dye around to create patterns with the different colors.

PASO 2:

Agarre un hisopo y lentamente mueva la tinta para crear un patrón de diferentes colores.

STEP 3:

Once you have a pattern you like, grab your paper and submerge it in the milk for ten seconds without moving or agitating it.

STEP 4:

After taking the paper out of the tray let it dry.
