ANNIVERSARY CATALOGUE

ROOT DIVISION IS A VISUAL ARTS NON-PROFIT THAT CULTIVATES A DYNAMIC ECOSYSTEM BY CONNECTING ARTS EDUCATION, EXHIBITIONS, AND STUDIOS. Root Division’s mission is to empower artists, promote community service, inspire youth, and enrich the Bay Area through engagement in the visual arts. Since its founding in 2002 by three MFA graduates of the San Francisco Art Institute, Root Division has brought together artists, teachers, curators, local schools, audiences, individuals, and foundations, to achieve its mission. Root Division runs four interconnected programs – Studios, Youth Education, Adult Education, and Exhibitions & Events – which link diverse audiences and interests in mutually beneficial relationships. Our Studios Program acts as hub for interaction and development for promising emerging artists, while empowering them to give back to the community. Currently we host 29 artists in 22 studios at below-market rates in exchange for their volunteer hours towards the organization.

2

In our Youth Education Program, we recruit, train, and place volunteer artists to teach free art classes in one of our nine after-school partner programs, creating a link between practicing artists and the schools community. Root Division provides free art classes to over 1000 underserved youth ages 5-24. Our Adult Education Program offers dozens of inspiring and affordable courses for adults interested in expanding their artistic skill-set. We also offer Professional Development Workshops that provide artists support and direction in composing portfolios, building websites, and developing practical business skills. Our Exhibitions & Events Program provides a platform for innovative artwork in an engaging environment. Our Second Saturday Exhibition Series presents a fresh show each month featuring an innovative collection of painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video, and performance. In the past year Root Division showcased the work of over 400 artists, fostered 6 curatorial visions, and welcomed over 6000 visitors to our gallery. Our programs not only nurture creativity, but also foster volunteerism and community engagement that is vital to the social, economic, and cultural health of the Bay Area.

Root Division was founded in 2002 by three MFA graduates of the San Francisco Art Institute to constructively address 3 main challenges facing emerging artists. A need for: 1. Low-cost studio space 2. Exhibition opportunities 3. Income-generating professional experience

Root Division’s Exhibitions & Events Program provides a platform for innovative artwork in an engaging environment. Over the past 15 years we have inspired over 500 new works, presented over 85 curatorial visions, sold over $720,000 of artwork from our gallery, and paid emerging artists over $650,000 through artist fees, sales, and commissions. The Second Saturday Exhibition Series, launched by Michael Krouse in 2005, presents a fresh show each month featuring innovative and diverse work by emerging Bay Area artists. Over the past 15 years Root Division has produced 146 monthly 2nd Saturday events.

TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS

In the Fall of 2010 Root Division launched the Latinx Teaching-Artist Fellowship (LTAF) . The LTAF receives a free studio space in exchange for teaching at Mission Education Center, a K-5 public school which serves students who recently immigrated from Latin America. The success of the program allowed Root Division to expand the fellowship to two artists annually in 2012. The LTAF’s are offered a free studio, artist stipend and teaching stipend in exchange for teaching at Mission Education Center. In 2014 Root Division launched the Blau-Gold Studio / Teaching Fellowship (BGSTF), made possible by a gift from the estate of the late Lonny Darwin, a supporter of education and the arts. The Fellowship, named for Ms. Darwin’s late mother, Emmy Blau- Gold, is designed to support an emerging artist for one year by providing free studio space and a monetary stipend. In keeping with Root Division’s mission, the Fellow will teach in Root Division’s Youth Education Program and be an active participant in the Studios Program. In 2016 Root Division announced a new partnership with The Growlery, a privately run artist residency centrally located in San Francisco’s historic Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Root Division’s BGSTF and LTAF fellows are eligible to live rent-free in a beautifully restored 6 bedroom Victorian-era home and have the opportunity to work with a small, diverse group of peers for 4 months as part of their fellowship.

FOUNDERS

IN THE BEGINNING Taking risks was easier when we had nothing to lose. Magical thinking was part of the business plan. Making payroll wasn’t a challenge when there was none. We cooked up our own version of radical ideology in a loft under the freeway. Root Division was a name related to horticulture, plucked from a dictionary as we grasped for meaning.

With only $32,000 in the bank, Root Division rented 7,000ft of warehouse space - we still don’t know why they agreed to rent to us. We were fortunate to have a community of great, resourceful, generous artist friends who made this possible. Root Division was a tenuous, ambitious, improvised dream that we shared with these great people. Now the name Root Division has built its own meaning, that community has exploded, and those friends have all gone on to creative success - along with 183+ Root Division artists.

8

THINGS WE KNOW NOW Nothing ventured, nothing gained. There is strength in numbers. Revolutions start small and are built on relationships. Collective effort can turn raw space into community. Everyone wants meaning in their lives. Creativity and persistence will get you through. Trust each other.

Our roles now as founders are mere shadows of those first efforts. The Root Division of today and tomorrow is built on the professionalism of its leaders, the resilience of its supporters, and the grit of legions of artists past, present and future. This persistent revolution that is Root Division belongs to them, to the communities it touches and those it creates. It belongs to you as you read this, and you help shape its future. Take the next risk. That is the future. Nathan Suter, Dennis McNulty, & Mitch Temple Founders Root Division

BOARD OF DIRECTORS As Root Division celebrates fifteen years, imagine the progress of our vibrant organization as a simple line graph. The first ten or eleven years are represented by a slow but steady incline, with the occasional little dip along the way. Following that, a dramatic zigzag. And then…the line shoots straight up and into the stratosphere! Root Division has achieved so much since we took stock of our organization on the occasion of our ten-year anniversary. As we celebrate our recent triumphs—a successful capital campaign, a beautiful new home and the ability to serve more artists and more public school partners—we recall that these successes were forged in the fires of San Francisco’s dynamic economic environment and its complex relationship to the arts, artists, and arts organizations. Root Division’s growth these past few years is astonishing in the face of predominant trends in San Francisco: an economic surge, increasing commercial rents, and decreasing studio space and opportunities for artists. The success of the tech and biotech industries, along with the Bay Area’s global influence, has resulted in the endangerment of San Francisco’s rich cultural fabric. As we watched other non-profit arts organizations shut their doors and said our goodbyes to artists who decamped to Los Angeles or New York, Root Division found itself priced out of its original home in The Mission. Our Board of Directors faced what can only be described as a crisis of the first degree. It required much of us, not least: deep soul searching, in which we doubled down on our commitment to our core program of affordable artist studios, dynamic exhibitions, and arts education for adults and youth. After intensive study and planning, a period in which we were advised and cheered on my many talented, experienced friends, colleagues and arts leaders, we took a tremendous leap of faith. Root Division’s Staff, Board and Studio Artists, past and present, hunkered down and did the work that needed to be done. We held our heads high, and somehow kept our little ship afloat as we navigated from our original space to temporary digs on Market Street, and then on to our beautiful new home on Mission Street.

10

Looking back at our trajectory, I am in awe. The force of our determination is still palpable to me, and I can’t help but smile when I think of the conditions that defined the inevitably of our success: timely and extremely generous gifts from supporters, invaluable support from civic leaders, a sense of stability from the owners of our building, and the hard work so many wonderful, creative people, under the steady, unwavering leadership of our Executive Director, Michelle Mansour. We rode a veritable tsunami of goodwill and enthusiasm as we made 1131 Mission Street our home, and are now happily settled in, with gorgeous studios, exhibition space, and classrooms. We have increased our capacity for Studio Artists, and concurrently increased our service hours and the number of public schools that we partner with in our community. Our Staff is a welloiled machine; their dedication, good humor, and ability to produce miracles is now nothing less than legendary. Our Board is wildly generous, talented, and committed. Our current Studio Artists are passionate, energetic, and full of promise. Our alumni are thriving, and we proudly watch them succeed in their careers as artists, educators, and leaders in the arts. At 15, Root Division has matured into an established, steady, valued part of the arts community in San Francisco, and I am exceedingly proud to celebrate this milestone with Root Division’s 15 Year Anniversary Exhibition, Performances and Print Project. Amy Ellingson Chair, Board of Directors, 2012– present Root Division

“AT 15, ROOT DIVISION HAS MATURED INTO AN ESTABLISHED, STEADY, VALUED PART OF THE ARTS COMMUNITY IN SAN FRANCISCO.”

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As I look back on the past 15 years, it’s impossible not to reflect on how much change and transition Root Division has endured. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for my hard-working staff, a core of extremely talented Studio Artists and Alums, a passionate Board of Directors, and an undeniably generous community. When faced with displacement in 2014, Root Division took what could have been a devastating moment for the organization and transformed it into a forward charge. We hit the ground running and barely slowed to a jog to maintain our presence and programming in an interim space on Market Street, and then ultimately to secure, renovate, and move into our new 13,400 square foot facility at 1131 Mission Street. This new home is bigger, better, and brighter than we could have ever imagined 15 years ago. We are delighted that our multi-use space is quickly becoming a bustling center for art and arts education in the heart of the city. There is a wonderful exchange between artists of various backgrounds that takes place here. Meaningful conversations, enriching partnerships, and unlikely friendships are forged. Out of these exchanges come poignant, expressive statements of our time in the form of new artwork and fresh curatorial visions. Our Studio Artists watch and participate in the exhibitions that are presented outside their doors. Our Adult Education students take classes surrounded by the inspiring work of emerging artists. When youth from our partner schools visit the space for events and workshops, they not only see art on the walls but also meet the artists who make it. When visitors come to the gallery to see our exhibitions they have a much fuller experience of what it looks and feels like to be an emerging artist today. We envision a San Francisco where artists remain a vibrant part of our community, and where all are able to experience the power of the visual arts. In these 15 years, Root Division has surfaced as one of the primary venues in San Francisco that supports emerging visual artists. Existing as a dynamic hybrid of the alternative space, commercial gallery, art center, and studio facility,

Root Division is contributing to making life as an artist in the Bay Area a sustainable practice while cultivating artists who give back to the community. Our programs not only nurture creativity, but also foster volunteerism and engagement that is vital to the social, economic, and cultural health of any area. One of the most precious things about Root Division for me personally is bringing people together around the creation and appreciation of art. As an artist myself, I’m continuously inspired by the talent, the generosity, and the dedication of the artists and community we have built here. It’s oftentimes difficult to look back in time and capture the full extent of our reach or the depth of our impact, but having worked with the organization since its beginnings, I have had the privilege of helping Root Division grow from a tiny seed of an idea into a flourishing network of relationships, opportunities, and experiences. As we launch into our next 15 years of supporting artists and arts education, I invite you to take a look at our history and become part of our future. Michelle Mansour Artist, Educator, Curator Executive Director, 2012 - present Root Division

“WE ENVISION A SAN FRANCISCO WHERE ARTISTS REMAIN A VIBRANT PART OF OUR COMMUNITY, AND WHERE ALL ARE ABLE TO EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF THE VISUAL ARTS.”

STAFF & ALUM It’s hard to say how and when a community is built. Piece by piece, individuals come together over shared experience, interest, or dedication to a cause, and somewhere along the line, those pieces become something much stronger than the sum of their parts. I haven’t been around for all 15 years of Root Division--I wasn’t there when the seed of the idea was planted by our three founders, as the programs were developed, and our first space secured-- but I have had the honor of watching for over 12 years both from the perspective of a Studio Artist and staff member, as the community and impact of Root Division have grown and evolved. Over the years, the structure of what we set out to do has remained the same, but the growth, evolution and enrichment of this organization has come with each artist, student, curator, and supporter that engages with our programs. Whether it’s a guest curator bringing a compelling idea and new group of artists to exhibit in the gallery, a Studio Artist proposing a new workshop or class offering to our students, or a teaching artist using their practice to connect with student populations in deep and meaningful ways, Root Division is simply the conduit for community to continue to develop and enrich itself. This organization belongs to our community, because it is the sum of our community. Our diverse programming and wide reaching impact would not be possible without each of the individuals and perspectives that have shaped our offerings. As we worked to gather the data for this catalogue, I have been struck by not only the volume of our community growth, but the deepening of relationships over the past 15 years. These elements have been the core strength that have stabilized and supported our continued expansion. Being a part of Root Division is an investment, but one that gives back to the individual tenfold. My own story with the organization began with a cross-country move, a need for space to paint, and a serendipitous introduction to a community that would become a guiding force in my path for over a decade. Through my time as a Studio Artist, I developed and honed administrative and curatorial skills that led me to pursue commercial gallery work, complete advanced graduate studies, and ultimately land full circle back in arts advocacy and cultural production by returning to Root Division to lead the Exhibitions Program. I am not alone in having been shaped by my time in the Studios Program. I have seen artists use the skills and connections gained to chart their paths to teaching in higher education, public schools, community centers, and museums. I have cheered as alumni take up the cause themselves -- opening new arts spaces and providing the highest caliber exhibitions and programming. And I have watched in amazement as so many galleries, museums, and arts institutions in the Bay fill up with the passionate and dedicated artists who are a part of Root Division’s community. The ripple effect of this incubator program has had a wide reaching and stabilizing effect on keeping artists living, working, and creating in the Bay Area and beyond. We are inspired by Alumni returning to support Root Division’s exhibitions each 2nd Saturday, their generosity in supporting our Auction and fundraising efforts, and grateful for those who continue to share their skillsets by teaching courses in our new facility.

14

There’s a strength in having a home base for a community to revisit, and a collective space is vital. Our hybrid gallery, studios, and educational facility has always been a gathering place for diverse communities with varied roles and interests to come together. It’s the overlapping of artists, students, curators, supporters, and families in our space that broaden our reach, expand our community, and make our work meaningful. When Root Division faced displacement in 2014, our own stability was tested, but the strength of a community is never known until it is tested. The grit and tenacity of the staff and leadership of this organization is something that you’d have to have experienced to truly understand, but suffice it to say that this group of individuals held the importance of Root Division’s community above all else in a time of crisis. Like a mother lifting a car off of a child, the team was able to find the strength to do the impossible. Through blood, sweat, and tears, and with the help of the incredible supporters that rallied behind us, we were able to secure a space for this valued community to continue to gather. We will be in our current home through at least 2030, providing a path for artists, students, curators and supporters to become a part of this organization’s legacy. I cannot wait to see the 20-Year Anniversary Catalogue -- and beyond. Thank you to the vibrant, diverse, and creative group of individuals who have become my friends and family over the past 12 years. You are what keeps us going. You are Root Division -- the legacy and the future. Congratulations on being a part of something so big and so beautiful. Happy Anniversary! “THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF THIS INCUBATOR PROGRAM HAS HAD A WIDE REACHING AND STABILIZING EFFECT ON KEEPING ARTISTS LIVING, WORKING, AND CREATING IN THE BAY AREA AND BEYOND.”

STAFF & STUDIO ARTIST I got involved with Root Division after accepting the 2013-2014 Latino Teaching Artist Fellowship (LTAF). I was drawn to the organization because it aligned with my practice and aspirations. As a recent Latinx MFA graduate I wanted to continue the development of my practice by simultaneously contributing to my community, and Root Division provided me with both of those things. As I got to work and learned more about Root Division, I fell in love with its community, its mission and the dedication/passion of all the Studio Artists and staff members. After completing my second year as one of the Latinx Teaching Artist Fellows, I became part of the staff by assisting with the installations for our monthly exhibitions. Currently, I am the Installations & Site Manager, and I lead our installations team on a monthly basis to make our exhibitions a total success. I get to work with over 400 artists and over 10 curators a year. Throughout my time with Root Division, I have witness to how much we have grown. I was lucky to have been able to help with the transition to our Bigger and Brighter space and the growth of the organization as a whole. On a personal level, I have gained a lot of experience teaching both youth and adults. I have met many amazing artists and have been able to collaborate with a few of them. For instance, during my second year as an LTAF, I met Vreni Michelini Castillo, who is now my collaborator of Aguas Migrantes along with Ana Gloria Bedolla and Alejandra Perez (also former LTAF). Aguas Migrantes is an art collective that runs a yearly summer art residency in Guanajuato, Mexico. I am proud to be part of Root Division, an organization that provides many opportunities for emerging artists/ curators and richness to the art scene in San Francisco. ALEXANDER HERNANDEZ Alexander Hernandez’ work explores gender expectations, immigration and cultural assimilation through the lens of a Queer immigrant constantly navigating throughout multiple communities. His preferred media are scrap fabrics, remnants of unfinished projects, ephemeral belongings, found objects, and traditional textiles. Hernandez sews, paints, embroiders, layers and patches these materials together using traditional needlework and DIY crafting techniques. He embraces ripped holes, unraveling threads, raw edges and slashes revealing layers of multiple identities. hernalex.com

PAULA LUCIA Paula Lucia is a local artist currently living in HaighAshbury, San Francisco and who also teaches and manages a children’s art studio in San Mateo. Lucia is fascinated by the balance between opposing forces within abstraction. Her two-dimensional work creates space that is both flat and layered; color that is simultaneously harmonious and unbalanced; and imagery that is graphic and abstracted. IAN TREASURE

T

Ian Treasure’s work is influenced by modern mechanics, devices, and symbols -- ones we rely so heavily upon for function and meaning, but that have become almost ubiquitous through overuse. He creates sculptures and installations which evoke a sense of play and humor, and that often incorporate systems that deal with time, motion, energy, and space. To draw attention to this excessive reliance on modern machinery, he incorporates simple mechanisms in tandem with household items (umbrellas, scissors, signage, etc.), questioning the validity and poignancy relative to the objects’ everyday function. The work is meant to occupy a space between humor and reflection. Many of the pieces highlight an aspect of the object that often goes unnoticed – the chirping sound of snipping scissors, the disguise of an umbrella’s shadow, the reassuring glow of an exit sign. Ian’s work plays with these boundaries between playfulness and precision, utilitarian functionality, and absolute uselessness. iantreasure.com Water-coolers of the World Unite, 2004, dimensions variable Water-coolers, water, motors, metal
