If I had to put money on the word real estate agents hear most often before selling a property, my bet would be “potential.” Whether the house calls for a total rehaul to bring it into the modern age or could simply use a few updates to fit its new owners’ style, people have already started to imagine the possibilities when they say, This is the one. That’s certainly how my husband and I were when we bought our house three years ago. And while it’s taken some time, we’re starting to see it come into the “after” phase we dreamed of during our first walk-through. One of the most dramatic changes happened recently when we painted the exterior a beautiful blueish gray. You know that trope in movies where one character takes off their glasses or dyes their hair, and they’re completely unrecognizable to the rest of the cast? That’s what it felt like our house did. Even with no other cosmetic updates, our home was completely transformed—and it makes me so happy. The shrubs I cursed in the front yard look less drab; they just need the attention they deserve. The new hue also better reflects the palette inside the house and even the colors my husband and I wear. While some home improvement projects add directly to the value of the house, this wasn’t necessarily one of them. The investment is worth it because we enjoy our house now even more than we already did. Whether you’re tackling a similar curb appeal update, a much-needed kitchen or bath renovation, or even a reorganizing project, you’ll find motivation to make it happen in our annual Before & After issue. Remember the potential you mentioned the first time you saw your house? This issue is all about realizing that potential and loving your home even more than before.

DESIGN NEWS
What’s New? MARLON BLACKWELL ARCHITECTS The prestigious American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced Fayetteville architect Marlon Blackwell among its newest inductees. As principal of Marlon Blackwell Architects, the honoree is known for his awardwinning designs across Northwest Arkansas as well as out of state; you might recognize his work from the Crystal Bridges Museum Store and Coop Ramen in Bentonville, the Harvey Pediatric Clinic in Rogers, or the Steven L. Anderson Design Center at the University of Arkansas, among many other local projects. Founded in 1898, the American Academy of Arts and Letters comprises an exclusive group of the country’s leading architects, visual artists, composers, and writers, including such well-known past members as Mark Twain, Georgia O’Keefe, Duke Ellington, and fellow architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Blackwell is one of this year’s 29 new members, along with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and film director Spike Lee, who will be officially inducted May 19 during the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ virtual ceremony. “You are welcomed into a fellowship of esteemed American artists who are making a real impact, and your work is acknowledged by these folks who are operating at the highest level of excellence in the discipline. It’s amazing, and it’s amazing to be part

of this accomplished group—I’m very humbled,” Blackwell says of the honor. “This also provides a platform for me to advocate for the good work and the many talented individuals in the arts here in Arkansas and in the middle of the country.” Blackwell is also a professor at the University of Arkansas’s Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design. He was named 2020 Southeastern Conference Professor of the Year and received the 2020 Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects. THE DUKE LITTLE ROCK
Hillcrest residents as well as locals who frequent the Little Rock shopping and dining district have likely wondered about recent work to the Saul Harris Building, which sits at the corner of Kavanaugh Boulevard and North Spruce Street behind Leo’s Greek Castle. While River City Coffee has operated uninterrupted on the east end of the building for months, four recently vacated suites (three previously home to now-closed boutique Haus Werk and one formerly home to Engel & Völkers, which has relocated down the street) have undergone extensive renovations to prepare for new tenants. In revitalizing the historic building, owner Daniel Bryant has dubbed it “The Duke” after William Marmaduke Kavanaugh, eponym of the boulevard that runs through the neighborhood. The Duke’s four new occupants include O’Dea Studios, an office and design studio for interior designer Marianna O’Dea; Bloom Salon, a chic hair salon operated by Maygie Stallings; Dandelion, a store that bills itself as a “contemporary garden and home shop;” and Woof Happy Tails, a dog grooming service with another location in west Little Rock.
“In addition to wanting to return the building to its original look, I wanted to break it back up into smaller spaces so they would be appropriate for smaller businesses. They are all very different, women-owned businesses that I’m confident will help keep Hillcrest vibrant and interesting,” Bryant says, noting Wes Martin with The Hathaway Group was instrumental in helping secure tenants he felt embodied the spirit of Hillcrest while architect Tim Heiple, whose office is located in The Duke’s downstairs, has been vital to the renovation process. Bryant has invested in other Hillcrest properties, such as the building that’s home to Rhea Drug, the Fountain, and Cañon Grill, as well as the restaurant Hill Station—a new build with a historic look that opened in 2020. “I’ve lived in Hillcrest for almost 20 years. We have three boys, Harry, George, and Tim, and I plan to leave the neighborhood better than I found it for them, if I can,” he says.

BENEFITS OF NATURAL STONE
1
2
3
DURABLE SURFACES
UNIQUE SLABS
AN ECO-FRIENDLY OPTION
Natural stones such as granite and quartzites (the most dense of the options shown here) can withstand high heat, meaning you can pull a pan from the oven and set it on the counter.
Since no two pieces are alike, you can choose the veining and texture that best suit your style. Their look cannot be duplicated by manufacturers.
The fact that it is naturally occurring, can sometimes be quarried near a building site, and is relatively low-maintenance makes natural stone an environmentally sound selection.

BEFORE & AFTER
Organized to Perfection Professional organizer Leslie Marshall helps Shayla Copas transform her underutilized garage into an inspiring workspace WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK STYLIST STEPH SMITH

R E F R E S H While the revamped garage is mostly Shayla’s domain, a portion of the back wall was reserved for her husband Scott’s tool chest. Empty bins stored on the highest shelves are at the ready for organizing the next project.

A desk built into the room’s Elfa system gives Shayla a spot to journal and sketch. “In my office, I’m in business mode, but when I get in here, I can relax and just create,” she says.

eslie Marshall has been helping people get organized since 2018 when she started The Marshall Concept as a part-time side hustle. Now operating this professional organizing business as her full-time gig, she helps clients in all stages of life who yearn to live better through wellorganized spaces—namely closets, pantries, laundry rooms, and even garages. This year, she teamed up for one such project with Little Rock’s Shayla Copas. As an interior designer, Shayla’s work has expanded to involve developing products for national brands, speaking at social media and marketing conferences, and even authoring a book on entertaining. “After the first book we had everything I used to style the chapters piled in the garage, and I couldn’t find anything,” Shayla says. “My office in the guest house is geared toward the interior design part of

my business, and I needed a space where I could go lay it all out and find everything to get ready for my next book.” Having connected with Leslie on Instagram, the two started talking about what it would take to turn the garage into a well-functioning storage space for Shayla’s many creative pursuits. Leslie started by assigning different zones to the space. “There’s a zone for fabrics and table linens, a zone for table settings, and even a gift wrap zone,” she says. “And it’s all in clear bins so Shayla can easily find what she’s looking for.” The biggest piece of the project was in planning an Elfa shelving system to wrap around the perimeter of the garage with shelves and drawers that can be reconfigured as needed. “I’m so very grateful for Leslie and her talent to organize,” Shayla says. “She has an amazing spirit, and she helped me get back in that mode of getting inspired to tackle my second book.”

“The most fun part of this project was getting to think outside the box. I hope seeing this inspires people to do the same, whether it’s in a garage or another room of the house.” —Leslie Marshall, The Marshall Concept

DRAWN TO DESIGN
In addition to better organizing Shayla’s props for photo shoots and tablescapes, another goal was incorporating an area to inspire creativity. A built-in desk equipped with supplies hits the mark.
2
EDITED DOWN
Before Leslie configured the storage and shelving, she tasked Shayla’s team with separating everything they wanted to keep into like categories. Smaller items, such as napkin rings, are stored in acrylic drawers at eye level for easy access.
3
MINDFUL STORAGE
Clear plastic tubs make locating larger items a cinch, too. “With my social media, sometimes I’m trying to put together content on the fly. Whether it’s a food shot or tabletop scene, this set-up makes it so much easier to find what I’m looking for,” Shayla says.

IN THE ZONE
After grouping items together by type, Leslie turned different areas of the garage into zones for specific tasks. For example, a small countertop by the garage’s window provides an area for Shayla to arrange flowers or sign copies of her book, which are stored in the drawers below.

Running with this thought, Jessie is sharing ideas for a French-inspired brunch that will allow you to focus on what truly matters—your guests. “I love how the French have mastered the art of joie de vivre, and entertaining in the morning is a great way to capture this idea because you don’t have the pressure of a formal dinner. It allows you to slow down and take it all in,” she says. To this point, “I didn’t want anything that wasn’t relatable or that was too complicated,” she adds, noting the flowers were from a local florist’s cooler and the food was pre-prepared from a local grocer. “I always say the host sets the tone. If the host is having fun, the guests will, too, so make it easy on yourself,” says the planner, who also creates and sells themed charcuterie boards. Set amidst the backdrop of Jessie’s cousin Elise Shea’s living room, two or 10 guests could linger over coffee and pastries or share stories from the past year while sipping champagne and eating fruit. “Elise often helps friends with home styling and holiday decorating,” Jessie says. “Her house is such a welcoming place, and after a year of being at home, it can be refreshing to see spaces used in a new light,” she notes, adding that guests often enjoy gathering in a room other than the kitchen. The location also adds to the relaxed, unhurried theme. “Brunch is not supposed to feel rushed; it can start at 9 and go until 4,” Jessie says.

4 WAYS TO SET THE SCENE
1
CONSIDER FURNITURE PLACEMENT
If you’re using an area of your home where you don’t typically entertain, be mindful of creating conversation areas, making room for walkways, and ensuring guests have plenty of resting places for plates and drinks.
2
LIGHT THE ROOM
Think about the time of day and light your space accordingly. “If it’s morning, make sure all the blinds and curtains are open to fill the room with light. If you’re hosting a nighttime gathering, dim the lights and rely on lamps,” Jessie says.
3
CREATE A PLAYLIST
“Music is a must; it sets the mood for any party,” Jessie says. For this brunch, she recommends a low-key jazz soundtrack playing in the background.
4
DON’T SKIMP ON FLOWERS
TIER OF TREATS
Morning gatherings allow little time for preparation. In an effort to keep the brunch simple and easy, Jessie picked up all the food the day before. “If your grocery cart is colorful, your table will be beautiful,” Jessie says, noting the mix of seasonal produce and pastries that reveal the fruit found inside.
“Take stock of what’s blooming in your yard and cut from there first,” the party planner says. Keep it simple by filling in with finds from your florist’s cooler or your local grocery store.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Rather than a kitchen counter or bar area, Jessie opted to use a window seat as an unexpected drink station, keeping beverages close to the living room setting. Guests can choose to sip champagne from glass coupes or enjoy a cup of coffee from the French press. Potted plants and cut stems bring color to the scene.

ard work, lots of fun, and very sticky: That’s how Katie Opriş describes her first experience harvesting honey in 2016. When she and her husband, Elvis, started beekeeping a year prior, they were already using honey in their food prep and well aware of its health benefits. Elvis had watched his father keep bees when he was growing up in Romania, and some of his brothers—he is one of six boys now spread over four countries in three continents—had taken an interest, too. When one of them came to visit in 2015, he got Elvis and Katie started with their first hive. “As far as the bees go, they’re just fascinating,” Elvis says. “Watching them, learning about their behavior—they draw you in and become addictive.” After that first year, the couple decided to rent a commercial space for their next harvest, and the operation now known as Brothers Honey Co. snowballed from there. “We started selling our honey locally, just to friends and in a coffee shop. But there was no way we could have kept harvesting out of our house at the time,” Katie says. They found a storefront in Conway and soon realized the spot could be so much more. “The more we looked into that, we thought, Why utilize this space for just a harvest, when we could probably have a store? Well, actually that part was more Katie,” Elvis says with a laugh. Katie had a vision of a local hub for all things bees and honey. In addition to selling their own packaged products, they now offer goods from other local

makers, honey on tap, beekeeping equipment, and even beekeeping classes. “From the beginning, we wanted to be an inclusive place both for the community and for beekeepers,” she says. “We also branded it in a way that feels a little boutique-ish; something people from Arkansas can be proud of.” There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes, from mitigating potential pests to bottling the finished product, and it’s a wonder Brothers Honey Co. isn’t a full-time job for either owner. Elvis is a nurse, and Katie has been a family and wedding photographer for 14 years; plus, the two have four children who are growing up with a serious appreciation for apiculture. “The kids love to help out. The big ones have bee suits, and they take turns going to assist Elvis at the hives,” Katie says. And at home, there’s also honey—lots of honey. Anywhere other people might use sugar, the Oprişes use honey, and they encourage you to do the same. “Raw honey is unfiltered and hasn’t gone through the pasteurization process like most store-bought honeys. Heating it up to that temperature keeps it liquid longer, but it also destroys the beneficial enzymes and antioxidants that are naturally there, and those are what differentiates it from another type of sugar source,” Katie says. To get more honey in your diet, she recommends mixing it into homemade salad dressings or drizzling it on grapefruit, ice cream, and even waffles. Turn to page 36 for Elvis and Katie’s recipe for Golden Oat Honey Muffins.

In addition to pure bottled honey, you’ll find a range of honey-based goodies in store, including honey sticks (below), marshmallows, and taffy. A dozen flavors of creamed honey are available for taste test (left), some in rotation seasonally.
In 2020, a neighboring storefront became available and Brothers Honey Co. was able to expand, doubling its size. Friends helped them build the floorto-ceiling wooden honeycomb installation.
Elvis prepares to “uncap” (remove the top layer of wax from) a frame of honey during a harvest. Uncapping only the top layer is less invasive for the bees, allowing them to refill the cells for winter honey stores.

Yields 12 muffins 1 cup old-fashioned oats 1 cup Greek yogurt 1 large egg ¼3 cup raw local honey ¼ cup brown sugar (optional, for additional sweetness) ¼ cup salted butter, softened 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup white whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2 ripe bananas, mashed 1 cup semisweet or milk chocolate chips (optional) ¼ cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
36 At Home in Arkansas | May 2021
PREPARE Preheat oven to 425ºF. Combine oats and Greek yogurt in a medium bowl. In a large bowl, whisk together egg, honey, and brown sugar (if desired) until smooth. Add butter and vanilla, and whisk to combine. Next, add oat-yogurt mixture, whole wheat flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon to the egg mixture. Stir until well combined, being careful not to over mix. Fold in mashed bananas, chocolate chips, and walnuts (if desired). Let batter rest in the refrigerator, covered, for at least 1 hour (and up to overnight). Line muffin tin with liners and spray with cooking spray. Distribute the batter between the compartments, filling to the top of the muffin liners. Bake 6-9 minutes, or until muffin tops have risen ¼- to ½-inch above the liner. Do not open oven door. Reduce heat to 350ºF and bake for 6-10 more minutes, or until golden brown and an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Enjoy with butter and a drizzle of raw honey.

A burger and chips from El Dorado favorite Minute Man.
There’s always something happening in El Dorado. That was true a century ago, when the town’s first oil well caused a boom in the economy and population, and it’s true now, as the South Arkansas city continues to draw interest and visitors from all over the state and beyond. For example, when MURPHY ARTS DISTRICT (eldomad.com) opened three and a half years ago, 21,000 people descended on the city for four days of music and entertainment; that’s not bad for a city of approximately 18,000. The arts district has been gogo-go ever since, pausing in-person events during the pandemic while pivoting to provide audiences with live-streamed concerts, children’s programs, and other online entertainment. This spring, the organization has started welcoming guests back to First Financial Music Hall for in-person concerts, including the Allman Betts Band on May 1 and Trey Johnson on May 8. On the first weekend of May, visitors to El Dorado can also enjoy the annual MAYHAW FESTIVAL (mayhawfestival.com) held on the grounds of the Newton House Museum. Put on by the South

Arkansas Historical Preservation Society, this Saturday festival is free and open to the public and, among other events, includes tours of the museum, a historic plantation home built in 1849. New this year is yet another downtown El Dorado fest, MAY ON MAIN (mainstreeteldorado.org). This event, also on May 1, features a chili cook-off, Baggo tournament, and live music, all within proximity of the square and in the name of celebrating the people and places that make this South Arkansas town so special. Thirty-five miles to the west, the 32nd annual MAGNOLIA BLOSSOM FESTIVAL (blossomfestival.org) is happening May 14-15 in its namesake town. Here, you’re invited to join the World Championship Steak Cook-off, Tom Dehoney Memorial Big Bass Tournament, or Blossom Festival Craft Show, where more than 100 makers will be selling their wares. Whether you’re local to South Arkansas or looking for a weekend getaway, there’s plenty to explore in El Dorado and Magnolia. Read on for more of our favorite places to shop, dine, visit, and stay.

HOME SHOW 2021
A Chat with HBA-GLR Chairman Daniel Menden As plans are underway for the Home Builders Association of Greater Little Rock’s 69th annual Home Show, we sat down with chairman Daniel Menden, owner of Menco Construction, to learn more. Here’s a bird’s-eye view of his role and this year’s event. Daniel Menden with his family.
At Home in Arkansas: Tell us a bit about your business and how long you’ve been involved with the HBA. Daniel Menden: My wife and I own Menco Construction; we specialize in building custom homes in central Arkansas. We pride ourselves in our client and contractor relationships and truly enjoy what we do. I joined the HBA-GLR in 2016, the board of directors in 2017, and have now been chairman for 2020 and 2021. Joining the HBA has provided multiple benefits to our company. The education, resources, vendor access, fellow builder knowledge, insight, and even discount program are just a few reasons we appreciate the HBA. Our desire to do what is right, teach others, and have great relationships makes the HBA the perfect place to be. AHIA: The Home Show is at a new venue this year. What can visitors expect in terms of layout and visiting booths safely? DM: Yes, we are excited to be holding the Home Show at the Statehouse Convention Center this year. The floor plan is not going to be the traditional trade show floor plan, but rather a one-direction flow. We did this for two reasons: First, for COVID-19 safety, and second, to create an experience within the Home
50 At Home in Arkansas | May 2021
Show. It is our goal to make it less industrial and more warm and inviting, just like your home is intended to be. This will also help curb the anxiety of standing at an intersection not knowing which way to turn next, as the floor plan will guide you. AHIA: Outside of the vendor booths, will there be opportunities to get advice or ask questions about the building and design process? DM: Yes. As always we will have builders and designers at our Ask the Builder and Ask the Designer booths to answer specific questions. You can ask them anything from start-to-finish processes on home building or remodeling, to seeking advice on how to redesign your family room. AHIA: Is there anything you’re especially excited to see at this year’s Home Show? DM: We are excited to have a new venue, new look, and new layout. When you walk into the Home Show, we want our attendees to feel welcomed, just like you are in your own home. This year’s Home Show will not look like a traditional trade show most people are used to attending, and that is something that excites us! Visit hbaglr.com/homeshow for event schedule and more information.

MODERN UPGRADE
Artist in Residence In Jonesboro, Beau Jones instills his remodel with a winning combination of polish and panache WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK STYLIST STEPH SMITH
May 2021 | athomearkansas.com 59
An abstract painting by fellow Jonesboro artist Sean Shrum hangs over a credenza in the living room. The black and white piece was painted by Beau.
NEUTRAL INTEREST
A neutral palette carries throughout the house to allow interesting light fixtures and funky accessories—like the golden garden statue head in the living room—to take center stage. “I knew if I was going to stick to neutrals, I had to bring it with texture and interest,” Beau says. “If you like black and white, you have to find those in-between colors, like creams, tans, and off-whites, that give it warmth.” A table and two chairs form a breakfast nook near the glow of a piece of neon art that reads, “Everything you need is inside you.”
60 At Home in Arkansas | May 2021
hen artist Beau Jones started looking for his first home, he had several musthaves: First, as an artist, a space to use as a working studio was vital. Second, he wanted plenty of walls to display his growing art collection. Lastly, he and his boyfriend, Cody, love to entertain, so rooms that could be versatile functionally were also important. When he found this home on the market, it fit the bill. “It had such good bones, and as I walked through, I could see myself giving it a more modern approach,” he says. Being a first-time homeowner, Beau knew he would need the help of a professional to transform this house into the stylish abode he imagined. Luckily, someone who knows him well came to mind: his mother, Kim Biggs, interior designer and owner of The Vibe Interiors. “Anywhere I’ve lived, my mom has always been the one to come help me figure it out, and her style has
W
influenced me for sure. Being an artist, she knew I had a vision for this house, and she was able to take me fully there,” he says. “Beau has a good eye and very good taste, and he knows what he likes,” Kim says of her son. “That part made it was easy. He just needed a little help pulling it all together.” Beau and Kim left the floor plan of the home intact, ensuring plenty of available wall space for pieces by his favorite fellow artists. Behind the house, a converted shed became the perfect studio for his work. “I don’t have a ton of my own art in my house,” he says. “I go to the studio in the backyard almost every day to paint, then I go back to my house and get to look at everyone else’s art. It makes me feel inspired.” And while some rooms may now serve a different purpose—the formal living room is now a “cocktail room,” and a pantry was reimagined as a bar—the house maintains much of its original character.

INSPIRED DINING
In the dining room, Beau replaced the existing chandelier with a cloud-inspired fixture, then centered the room around a technicolor painting by Nashville artist Gina Julian. “Her use of color is just so vibrant, and I used that piece to figure out the rest of the room,” Beau says. Over one of Ashley Longshore’s “Weezy” portraits, an art lamp elevates the casual dining space to the feeling of a gallery or museum. On the opposite side of the room, a large bar cabinet stores wine glasses and dessert plates for dinner parties.

TRUE TO FORM
The palette turns darker in the galley kitchen, where black subway tile, a wallpapered ceiling, and brass hardware bring style to the small space. “I like kitchens that are clean, simple, and minimal, but I did want to elevate it to fit the rest of the house and make sure it didn’t feel sterile,” Beau says.
CHEERS TO STYLE
Through the kitchen doorway is a space previously used as a breakfast room and a pantry, which Beau transformed into a bar and lounge—one of the largest structural changes he made in renovating the house. Here, a window cut into the wall of what was a pantry opens the space up to the former breakfast room, and the addition of countertops, a mirrored wall of shelving, and barstools make it a fully functional bar. Aesthetically, a graphic wallcovering unites the two spaces.

LAYERS OF COMFORT

In the master bedroom, tiny windows were more of an eyesore than a focal point. Kim remedied this by installing a wall of automized draperies. “Things like that, I would have never thought to do,” Beau says. “She was instrumental in picking out fabrics and furniture that would fit the spaces well.” In this long, narrow room, the pair chose a curved, upholstered bed in a textured bouclé fabric and large custom nightstands centered against the wall of drapes.
YOU’RE INVITED
The guest bedroom takes on a retro feel with a deco-inspired headboard, Sputnik-style light, and vintage chairs at the end of the bed. Leathertextured wallpaper provides warmth amid the neutral palette. “Whether it’s wallpaper on the ceiling or an accent wall, Beau loves texture and dimension and layers,” Kim says. “Those are the key things that make a house stand out.”
In the guest bath, a shower featuring black and white oversized tile is a statementmaking upgrade from the home’s original built-in bathtub.

“Beige, white, and light pink are my favorite colors; you’ll even find them in my wardrobe,” Jill says of the living room’s palette. Antique chairs reupholstered in a textured fabric and a pair of Italian consoles that frame the French doors reflect Jill’s love of using older pieces alongside contemporary fabrics and accessories.

Cottage “White Dove” by Benjamin Moore
CHIC Designer Carrie Kidd teams up with a friend to bring character, color, and charm to a Little Rock home
hen Jill Storey Matthews first laid eyes on her Heights cottage, it had an overgrown exterior and dark interior palette. “You almost couldn’t see it from the street but I knew it had a lot of potential,” she says. Having lived in eight different homes—and remodeled every one—Jill wasn’t afraid of the challenge, and she set to work on a punch list of items to make the home her own. “There’s no perfect house unless you build it yourself,” she says. A stylist who has spent the majority of her career in the retail and wholesale clothing industry, Jill knows the benefits of working with a designer and has often sought advice from Dallas designer Tesa Turner, Beverly Watkins of Little Rock’s Fresh i.d., and, for this project, Carrie Kidd of Carrie Kidd Designs. “Jill has such an amazing collection of pieces,” Carrie says. “I’m good with color, fabrics, art placement, and tying it all together, but she picks it all out.” “I’ve been told I have a good eye, but I like to bounce ideas off of someone else when I’m doing a project,” Jill says.

MIXING THINGS UP
Downsizing meant Jill had to part with some pieces while also reimagining beloved ones in new areas. “It was like a huge jigsaw puzzle,” Carrie says. “Anything that came from her previous house, we switched to a different room here; you can get so used to the way things look in a certain space but when you move them to a new grouping or room, it’s totally fresh.” Additionally, antique pieces—like the French commode shown in the entry—were paired with modern light fixtures, accessories, and art to infuse life.
A work by a well-known Southern artist hangs over the fireplace, which was re-faced with a basketweave mosaic tile.
In this instance, Jill was downsizing from a residence she shared with her late husband, James, and needed to make every inch of space count in terms of using it wisely and infusing her style. “More than anything, this project was a ton of TLC, but it wasn’t a complete overhaul,” Carrie says, noting the coat of white paint that transformed many of the walls, trim, and ceilings to create a clean backdrop. “Jill likes color, but not on her walls. This paint allows her to bring it in with lamps, accessories, and her great collection of art.” Alongside pieces given to the couple by James’s mother are works by friends as well as art collected on travels. “When James and I traveled, we always stopped in an art gallery to purchase a piece to remember that trip,” Jill says. The same process is true for the way she acquired many of the antique furnishings seen throughout the design. “I like an eclectic home,” she says. “I collect things as I go along, and it’s been a process for over 30 years. I’ve made mistakes along the way but I’ve gotten some things right, too.”
70 At Home in Arkansas | May 2021
When Jill decided to keep her Baldwin baby grand piano, the space planned as a breakfast room became a music room. “She has plenty of entertaining areas, so we decided to create this room and give her some display space,” Carrie says of the transformation. Farrow + Ball’s “Lotus” brings whimsy to the walls.

LIGHTEN UP
In the kitchen, wood cabinetry and dark countertops and walls were traded for a white backdrop accented by classic marble counters. “We chose brick for the floors because we thought it was unexpected but still traditional, and the pink and red in the cafe curtains also play off of them,” Carrie says. A small breakfast counter, a desk space, and the home’s dining area sit beyond the peninsula of cabinetry at the far end of the kitchen.

beautiful setting, tight-knit neighbors, and a location in the heart of Fayetteville were just a few of the reasons this family loved their previous home. So when the chance to purchase a house in the same neighborhood with a larger yard and acreage presented itself, they couldn’t pass it up. “We actually bought our last house from this same couple, and were completely flattered when they called to say they would be moving again and wondered if we were interested in their home,” one of the owners explains. “It had amazing bones, and we knew it was a great fit,” she adds. While the couple was taken with the home and property, they still wanted to personalize the space to meet the needs and style of their family of four. “We wanted to brighten up the rooms, but more than anything we wanted to make it functional for us and little kids,” the owner says. They called on friend and designer Melissa Haynes, whom they had worked with on smaller projects at their past home. “Melissa just knows my style so well,” the owner says. “I like a lot of color, but I’m also drawn to traditional, classic pieces

that are timeless. Her attention to detail is impeccable and their service is seamless for the client. She wants your home to function perfectly for each member of the family.” Built in 1989, the designer notes the exterior and architectural features, including the exquisite trimwork and paneling throughout, were amazing. These stayed intact in almost every room but were freshened with coats of light, neutral paint. In the kitchen, the layout was shifted to allow for a larger island and appliances were updated and reordered to maximize flow. Similarly, in the master bath, separate his-and-hers spaces were combined to function at peak for the couple. Other rooms received cosmetic updates to bring them in line with the rest of the design. “She wanted each room to have individuality, but the trick for me was to create a common thread or connection between them all,” Melissa says. “It’s whimsical, family friendly, and there’s an animal motif in almost every room,” the owner says of the end result. “After the renovation, we moved back in February 2020, and we have really lived in this home since then.”

FULL OF LIFE
Having recently completed an update of the living room at the couple’s previous home, both the owners and Melissa wanted to make use of those furnishings in the same space at the new house. The blue palette has accents of lilac that keep the look playful and complement the scheme found in much of the home. Outdoor fabric covers the sofa to invite play, while the other pieces are stain-treated. The painting on the mantel is by Northwest Arkansas artist Allison Hobbs.

CENTRAL STYLE
The dining room is located in the center of the home, making it a pass-through to almost any destination, and therefore it was important its style felt congruent with the adjoining spaces. A coat of light white paint updates the coffered ceiling, while a Schumacher wallpaper enlivens the walls with a blooming garden scene. Amethyst drapes and performance velvet chairs in a slightly darker hue bring in the jewel tones seen in other rooms, while antique pieces and a practical sisal rug personalize the space to the family.

FOND OF FAUNA
Animal motifs—a nod to both the home’s setting and the owners’ love of wildlife and pets—can be found in many of the rooms, including a powder bath located off the kitchen. Here, Melissa designed the vanity cabinet around a pair of zebra-shaped pulls. The room’s cheerful palette and playful wallpaper are a fun surprise for guests that still adheres to the overall home design.

KITCHEN, CUSTOMIZED
In the kitchen’s complete renovation, the refrigerator was relocated to a former closet wall and double ovens and a cooktop were swapped for a range with a hood. Additionally, cabinetry was extended to the ceiling to maximize storage space, and the island was enlarged to offer seating for the family of four. Practical quartz countertops were what Melissa calls “a total mom move” that will stand up to everything from spaghetti night to science experiments for years to come. These are complemented by marble tiles extending from the backsplash up the wall, bringing the natural beauty of organic veining to the room.

The kitchen’s adjoining breakfast nook is a hive of activity and a common gathering spot for the family. Melissa had the chair cushions covered in vinyl and used zippered covers for the banquette to make for easy care. She notes the cerused oak table is a sturdy option that will stand up to craft time as well as meals. Nearby a pair of desks offer storage and a place for the kids to do homework, making the space a true hub.

CURRENTLY TRADITIONAL
A fresh coat of paint and new furnishings updated the master bedroom. The palette stemmed from the abstract fabric seen on the center throw pillow. “It’s sort of a chinoiserie landscape, and the homeowner gasped when she saw it,” Melissa says of the selection. A French-inspired bed and dark wood nightstands play to the desire for a timeless design. Overhead, a plaster chandelier reflects light upward casting a soft, mellow glow over the room.

Light the Way Explore three types of lighting and how layering them can illuminate your space AMBIENT LIGHTING
All images from At Home in Arkansas archives. Photos by Rett Peek.
This is the most general category of lighting and the starting point for all rooms after natural light is evaluated. Ambient lighting can include overhead flush-mount lights, pendants, chandeliers, and recessed lighting.
TASK LIGHTING
Aptly named, task lighting performs a specific function. For example, in the bath, sconces alongside a mirror can give light for shaving or applying makeup. In the kitchen, directed pendants make it easy to see countertops while preparing a meal. And, lamps on end tables and nightstands offer focused light for reading.
ACCENT LIGHTING
The final layer of lighting can help to set the tone for a room. For example, your dining room chandelier could be on a dimmer to give a soft glow for a nighttime meal, your bookcases could be embellished with art lights that are equally functional and stylish, or sconces installed down a hallway can softly lead the way through a home.

PATTERNS WE LOVE
Gingham Style Looking for a classic, preppy pattern that brings charm to every space, from the nursery to the kitchen? Gingham checks all these boxes and more. Originating in Asia, the English “gingham” takes its name from the Malaysian word genggang, meaning striped. Perfectly symmetrical and square, the pattern brings a sense of order that is casual and cheerful at the same time. And although it has been around for a handful of centuries, it’s certain you’ll see gingham for years to come as it continues to make its way from picnic tables and button-down shirts to modernday upholstered furnishings, wallpaper, and home accessories.
