The secret to a successful book club is good food and plenty of drinks. When there are refreshments involved, people tend to show up to enjoy one another’s company—whether they’ve read the book or not. I’ve learned this over a decade of experience in not one, but now two book clubs, the second of which is a group of women spanning generations who all live in my neighborhood. After taking off several months during the pandemic, this group met indoors for the first time during that small window of near-normalcy we experienced early in the summer. We gathered in the kitchen, like people always do, where a potluck of food was arranged and drinks were close at hand. Amid our chit-chat, we admired the host’s kitchen, from her pretty green cabinet color and art collection to the attention to detail that makes modern upgrades appear seamless in a house nearly a century old. We agreed this was one of the things we’d missed most about in-person gatherings: peeking behind the curtain into our friends’ lives, catching the way their stories work themselves into their homes. It’s an intimate thing to open your house to guests—especially your kitchen, where so many messes are made. And, oh, how we’d missed it! As of this writing, the rise in variant cases has reminded us that the pandemic is not yet behind us, and it might be some time before we’re admiring one another’s kitchens in person again. Because of this, I’m all the more honored to bring the beauty of your Arkansas neighbors’ homes safely to you through the pages of this magazine.

What’s New? BELLA VITA JEWELRY LITTLE ROCK

Jewelry designer Brandy Thomason McNair started Bella Vita Jewelry 13 years ago. This fall the small business will expand its Little Rock shop into an adjacent loft, which will contribute 1,200 more square feet to the storefront at 108 W. Sixth St. This means that most of the jewelry production can move off the sales floor, freeing up space for Bella Vita to increase its inventory of apparel, local art, home décor, crystals, and even fair trade items for pets. “I’ve wanted to branch out into more ethically sourced, ‘slow fashion’ apparel items, which this will allow me to do,” Brandy says. In addition to increased inventory, Brandy looks forward to hosting more events and workshops in the new studio. Further down the line, she even plans to dedicate part of the space to an antique button museum featuring her collection of hundreds of buttons “This will probably take a couple of years to develop and execute, but it’s a passion project I’m determined to see to fruition.” Follow along on Instagram (@bellavitajewelry) for shop updates.

J. BIENVENU INTERIORS LITTLE ROCK

Sweet Home Furnishings & clement on South Main Street, a veritable treasure trove of furniture, art, and accessories, is a collaboration between antique dealers John Bell and Chris Clement. The two joined forces more than 15 years ago to bring shoppers a unique experience, integrating their eclectic finds into cohesive vignettes rather than separating them out into individual booths. Now, they’ve welcomed a third dealer to the store: Jen Bienvenu of J. Bienvenu Interiors. “She has such a great eye, and she started out as a good customer who gradually became a good friend,” Chris says. When he and John started to consider the possibility of a third dealer, the timing was just right for Jen to start selling finds of her own. “We’re so glad to have her; her taste is complementary to what we have in store, but she also has her own viewpoint,” Chris adds. “I’ve been shopping with Chris and John since we moved to Arkansas, and their style has definitely influenced my own aesthetic,” Jen says. “I’m very grateful to be part of their world.” Look for Jen’s contributions to the store—which range from classically designed furniture and upholstery to taxidermy and dried gourds—at 1324 S. Main St. in Little Rock. You can also follow along on Instagram (@j.bienvenu.interiors), and read our Q&A with Jen on our blog (athomearkansas.com/blog).

Keeping the couple’s three children in mind, Jill opted for wool sisal rugs to take the formality down a notch and make the rooms practical for everyday use.

he living room, dining room, and entry of this Little Rock couple’s home have a story common to houses built in the mid1900s: The front rooms weren’t living up to their full modern-day potential. “These spaces were dated, and we had kind of piecemealed the furnishings but never really pulled it together,” one of the owners says. To remedy this, they contacted friend and designer Jill Lawrence. Inspired by what she calls the couple’s “timeless and elegant” style, Jill began to reimagine the rooms with fresh updates. “We didn’t have to rip everything out and start over. This project had lots of little tweaks that make it pop,” she says. For example, existing built-ins in the living room were updated by removing a heavy trim, covering the backs in a navy grasscloth, and adding brass library lights. A framed sailboat painting was the inspiration for the palette. The couple, who are originally from the Northeast, had purchased the piece shortly after

T

moving to Arkansas. “We found it at an antique show, and it immediately took us back to New England,” the owner says. With the hues set, Jill created visual interest through furnishings and, most notably, a bold wallpaper that greets the family and their guests just beyond the front door. “This is the middle ground between the two anchoring rooms. We went a little bit wild here, but it ties everything together,” Jill says. Across the entry in the dining room, the couple were able to use their existing buffet but opted to replace the table with a round version paired with comfortable upholstered chairs. Framed antique botanicals and a new work by local artist Tanya Sweetin complete the space. “We really trusted Jill and gave her free rein,” the owner says. “And the redesign totally exceeded our expectations.” The rooms are now a destination for BEFORE morning coffee, evening cocktails, and meal time. “It’s so cohesive, warm, and inviting; I can’t imagine it being any other way now,” the homeowner says.

MATURE DECISIONS

In the living room, club chairs replaced stiff, formal options while a new velvet sofa in a blue hue coordinates with the beloved sailboat painting that hangs at its back. A metal and glass coffee table breaks up the wood in the space and brings in a hint of contemporary style. Built-in shelves, which previously held books, are now a display space for the owners’ blue and white collectibles. “I like to shop the house first to see what collections and pieces the owners have. It makes the design more personal, and most people are so excited to use pieces they have in a new way,” Jill says.

autumn, we lean toward colors like orange, maroon, burgundy, and some deeper greens,” David says. “If you have more tropical flowers in bright colors left over from summer pots, you can replace those with ornamental cabbages or pansies as they start to wilt.” Read on for David’s picks for transitional plantings along with tips for care and maintenance.

PLANTING POINTERS 1 The leaves of a trailing ‘Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Red’ sweet potato vine bring a fall feel to this container. Sweet potato vine loves the sun, but will also tolerate partial and full shade, and the amount of light it receives may alter its leaf color. 2 One way to bring color to fall planters is through vibrant foliage, like coleus. This is an attractive annual available in many varieties, such as the eye-catching ‘Kong Red’ coleus.

30 At Home in Arkansas | September 2021

3 ‘Cabaret Neon Rose’ calibrachoa are prolific bloomers, often keeping their flowers through October. To help them last, maintain welldrained soil. 4 ‘Sombrero Adobe Orange’ echinacea and other coneflowers can be planted in spring or early autumn, as long as it's at least six weeks before the first frost. This vivid variety will continue to produce blooms well into fall.

5 Ornamental grasses such as this hardy ‘Prince Tut’ Cyperus papyrus are great for the dryer soil conditions of containers. In mild weather, these grasses will last through December. 6 Succulents trailing over the side, such as Kalanchoe thyrsiflora (commonly known as paddle plant) bring interest to containers. Always make sure succulents have good drainage.

Located downtown in Simon Park, "Aurora Rising" was painted in 2007 by UCA alumnus Morton Brown.

For years, Conway has been known as the City of Colleges, thanks to the three institutions of higher education based there: the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College, and Central Baptist College. However, recent visits to the town 30 miles north of Little Rock have us ready to add a few other options for Conway’s nickname. How about the City of Coffee? With BLUE SAIL COFFEE, ZETÊO, ROUND MOUNTAIN, T.H.I.N.K. COFFEE, and now a location of Northwest Arkansas’s 7BREW opening soon, there’s more than enough local java for every student in the city. Another moniker we’ll propose is the City of

Creativity. Conway boasts the BAUM GALLERY OF FINE a museum for the visual arts on UCA’s campus that often shows touring exhibitions in addition to student work. It is also the headquarters for the ARKANSAS SHAKESPEARE THEATRE , the state’s only professional Shakespeare company, which performs work by the Bard (and other popular plays and musicals) every summer. Simply take a walk downtown and you’ll find new murals springing to life from old buildings’ walls, a sign that the city is always changing—and often defying definition. LIGHT AND LIVABLE

An all-white kitchen adheres to the couple’s desire for a clean, unfussy design. A geometric-shaped backsplash and bamboo barstools keep the look visually interesting, while glass-front cabinets give a place to display blue-and-white pieces, tying the room to the home’s overall palette. Quartz countertops are a durable option that will stand up to the wear and tear of family dinners and weekend gatherings.

Open shelving displays a meaningful collection of handmade pottery. A large-scale hexagon tile brings interest to the backsplash. hen the owners of this Little Rock home began house hunting for their family of six, they had a very specific requirement in mind: a kitchen in need of a full renovation. “We wanted a place where we could put our own touch on it,” one of the homeowners says. She and her husband toured this 1995 property and instantly fell in love with its layout, location, and, most of all, potential. After living with the existing kitchen for several years, the couple were ready to embark on the remodel, and they desired the help of a professional to get it right. “We cook every night, so I wanted to work with a Certified Kitchen Designer to make sure it would function really well,” the homeowner says. She met Charlotte Lefler, CKD, with Kitchen & Bath Ideas, who helped transform the small galley kitchen into a more efficient space. “Charlotte brought in so

W

many good ideas that I wouldn’t have thought of,” she says, noting the cabinetry proportions, food storage considerations, and flow for tasks like unloading the dishwasher were all thanks to the designer’s expertise. With Charlotte on board to address the room’s space planning and organization, the homeowner took the lead on aesthetics, which were influenced by her parents’ careers as ceramicists. “Because pottery and ceramics have played such a big role in my life, I love the idea of form and function going together,” she says. “We wanted the kind of kitchen where living life in it would make it look better, so getting Charlotte’s advice on the things that would be durable enough for little nicks and bumps along the way was so important.” Leathered quartzite countertops, quarter-sawn oak on the island and perimeter cabinetry, and unfinished brass hardware hit the mark, giving the new kitchen a casual, comfortable feel that suits the whole family.

DEFINING FEATURES

Inspired by cozy, organic elements, Storybook Homes reinvents a Conway bath 44 At Home in Arkansas | September 2021

Inspired by a similar piece, Tiffany drew the charcoal figure seen over the tub.

ore space and a streamlined style were top of mind when homeowner Tiffany Keathley called Niki Thompson of Storybook Homes to help renovate her master bath. Having seen Niki’s work around Conway, Tiffany admired her ability to start a project with a theme and carry it throughout a home. One of the must-haves in the new space was a soaking tub. “I take a bath every day, so I wanted a place where I could just relax,” she says. Previously, a fiberglass shower sat across from the room’s toilet. Taking in square footage from an adjacent bedroom allowed for the creation of a separate water closet and a dedicated wet area, which includes the freestanding tub and an open shower across from it. “Layouts are one of my favorite things to work on. This allowed us to get all the features she wanted without relocating the window or stealing space from the vanity area,” Niki says. As for aesthetics, Tiffany was originally drawn to what Niki describes as a more glam look; however, she began to bring in inspiration with Scandinavian and European pieces, and they soon discovered her style was more natural and organic. From the earthy palette and textured accents to the vintage rug, a grounded yet modern look flows throughout the bath. The room’s existing double vanity was functional but received a style refresh with a coat of gray paint as well as new hardware and countertops. In the wet space, what Niki calls a dressier version of subway tile was laid in a vertical fashion with larger than average grout lines. “This is such a small detail that goes a long way visually,” the designer says. Now, not only does Tiffany have a new bath to enjoy, but also a better sense of how she wants her home to feel as she continues to make updates, applying the new style in each area.

Layered neutrals and bold accents bring character to a newconstruction home s they say, timing is everything. That’s why Vicki and Terry Burnett waited 12 years before breaking ground on their new home in Roland. “We had a lot of time to dream and imagine. We just wanted the timing to be right,” Vicki says. When the perfect opportunity finally did come, Vicki called on a dear friend, Mona Thompson of Providence Design, to guide the home’s interior design, and builder Bill Parkinson of Parkinson Building Group to bring the team’s vision to fruition. Mona had worked with the couple on their previous residence, which had a more traditional style than the open, transitional feel they desired for their new home. “They wanted something completely different and more casual this time,” the designer says. comfortable dining area, spacious prep zones, and warm woods mixed with a black-and-white palette. “Whenever we start house plans, we always start with the kitchen because it’s the heart of the home,” Mona says. “We started talking about accent colors because we knew whatever we picked was probably going to be something we would use throughout the rest of the house. Vicki immediately said she was drawn to black.” To this end, “Black Magic” by SherwinWilliams covers the lower perimeter cabinets and two taller cabinets on either end of the main wall. bamboo-back chairs also tie into the scheme. Mona helped carry the Burnetts’ updated style throughout the house, including in the master bathroom, which is an airy retreat from the darker palette seen in the shared spaces. Over the soaking tub, the designer incorporated a cherished painting that used to hang in the dining room of the couple’s former house. “I love the way Mona is able to come in and interpret a space,” Vicki says. “Her creativity isn’t held captive by what used to be. I love this piece here and never would have thought to use it in this space; It makes you see the art in a new light.”

In the master bath, the homeowners wanted a light and airy atmosphere without the maintenance of a porous material like marble. “The flooring is a porcelain tile that looks like stone, and we used the same material in the shower. It’s attractive but indestructible,” Mona says. The tile’s herringbone pattern, a clean-lined chandelier, and a mix of warm and cool metals speak to the home’s updated yet timeless design.

In Sherwood, Sha Davari helps a longtime client perfect her newconstruction kitchen and bath rt of Design owner Sha Davari and her client, Nancy Miller, have a history together; the two initially met during their high school years, and the designer has now helped Nancy and her husband, Bob, with three homes. “When we decided to build, we knew we definitely wanted to use Sha. This is going to be our last home, and we wanted to get it right,” Nancy says. While Sha helped with the overall design, the kitchen and master bath were two spaces where her expertise proved invaluable. “I tend to like more tans and taupes, and Sha really went with that and made it work,” Nancy says. “She is so good at getting a vision of what you want and then making it happen.” Since Nancy and Bob both enjoy cooking, a spacious kitchen with plenty of seating for their children and grandchildren was a priority. Comfortable barstools at the large island allow for this, while the adjoining dining

space has chairs on castors that can easily roll into the chef’s area. The contrast of painted cabinetry and a wood island break up the space and signal defined zones within the open floor plan. Accent colors were taken from the chandelier over the island, a find from Art of Design. “We got the black and gold palette going from the light fixture, and I love the way those colors pulled everything together,” Sha says. Nancy had purchased the painting seen in the adjoining dining space years ago at The Showroom in Little Rock; this, along with the new sideboard and drapery fabric Sha selected, repeated the hues throughout the spaces. “She wanted the home to be warm and inviting—and, most importantly, for it to have a cohesive flow,” Sha says. With this thought in mind, several materials were carried into the master bath, including the travertine tiles, cabinetry hardware, and the wood flooring, which flows throughout the home, unifying all the spaces.

IN CONTRAS Designer Sarah Smith lightens the moody hues of her home with a clean backdrop and chic finishes

ith three young children, days spent on the water and nights in a calm, natural setting sounded pretty perfect to designer Sarah Smith and her husband, Cody. After selling their Fayetteville home, the family moved into a house they were originally building as an investment property on Beaver Lake near Rogers, making the dream a reality. “When COVID hit, we knew we’d be doing virtual school and thought it was the perfect time to live here and create these memories with our kids,” Sarah says. With plans for the home already in action, Sarah began to make small tweaks to the design—which already had her modern, warm aesthetic. Drawing from the dark, charcoal exterior, she wanted to create a matched vibe in the interior with different textures and shapes, as well as wood tones and a defined palette. “I wanted it to be bright yet still moody,” she says. To accomplish this balance, neutral backdrops create continuity and invite light into the rooms, while key pieces such as the kitchen island and master bath vanity are painted a standout, deep hue. Additionally, a mix of traditional and more contemporary furnishings bring personality to the rooms. For example, the dining room’s linen ottomans lean traditional yet pair effortlessly with midcentury modern chairs around the table. “I was intentional about contrasting shapes and textures and unifying it all with the palette,” Sarah says. She also wanted to personalize the space for her family. Too far along in the process to specify wallpaper, Sarah decided to add a mural by Northwest Arkansas artist Meg Bourne to customize a wall seen behind the kitchen. “My three kids were with me when Meg came to discuss the mural. They were running around the house, laughing, and playing,” Sarah recalls. “Meg ended up creating a work with three continuous lines that intersect and cover the wall; it represents our children and has so much meaning.”

An updated layout and polished finishes are hallmarks of this Maumelle kitchen renovation hen Debra and David Shumate built their home in 1999, a red and gold palette was all the rage. Two decades later, the couple, who are now empty nesters with soon-to-be a dozen grandchildren, have a different style and different needs. “We had reached the point where it was time to swap out colors, and that opened a can of worms with one of the biggest things being the kitchen. If we were going to stay in this house, rather than downsize, we had to modernize,” Debra says. After visiting Distinctive Kitchens & Baths’ Little Rock showroom, she knew she’d found the perfect partner for the update in owner Bill Wrape. “What initially struck me about the kitchen was the wasted workspace and the island sitting in between the range and the refrigerator, which was a hassle,” Bill says. To remedy this, the design plans called for the existing

W

island to be traded for a taller, more narrow version, creating space in the high-traffic area and allowing for barstools where friends and family can perch along one side. Additionally, the refrigerator (which is concealed with appliance panels) was relocated to the same side as the range and sink—meaning no more trips around the island to gather ingredients. The Shumates lightened up the look by opting for a palette of neutrals with polished accents. “One of the things I envisioned was white and gold,” Debra says. Bill and his team were able to match the new cabinetry color to the home’s existing trim, a move that helped the renovation’s bottom line and adhered to the overall aesthetic. Additionally, black countertops were traded for a lighter option featuring a white background and gray and brown veining that complements the room’s hues.

An icemaker was installed at the far end of the island for easy access to the nearby bar.

Alpha Countertops Opened in 2006, Alpha Countertops was founded by Lucas and Sheri Moore and Frank Parson, who also owns Springdale’s New Century Countertops. Early on it became clear Lucas was a visionary, striving to be the area’s premier countertop provider. Sadly, he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010 and passed away

in April 2014. Without hesitation, Frank and his wife, Marcella, along with many employees showed their devotion as they stepped up and held Alpha Countertops together during the extremely tough time. After prayer, consideration, and consulting with Frank, Sheri decided to make her late husband’s goal

Sheri Moore Pruitt

for the company her own. “This is my everything, and I come in every day and give it 100%. I try to learn and grow. I want us to be the best company we can be. I am so thankful for the employees we have; and I couldn’t do it without them and their dedication to the company,” she says. Today, Alpha Countertops

is flourishing. They have a local reputation as an honest, reputable company with high-quality work and customer satisfaction. They continue to expand, adding both new machinery and employees. In 2019, Alpha Countertops opened a second showroom location in Conway—evidence of their bright future ahead.

Curtis Contracting, Inc. Frank Curtis of Curtis Contracting, Inc. has more than 30 years of experience building and remodeling homes. He specializes in mid- to large-scale remodels including home additions, whole house renovations, and kitchen and bath makeovers. Before tackling any renovation, Frank suggests that homeowners take a look at the big picture involving costs and future plans for the home. This can help them come up with a reasonable budget to determine if the renovation is a wise one.

As a contractor, Frank believes basic communication is the key to successful projects. He uses the latest apps to make conversing with homeowners, suppliers, and subcontractors as simple as texting, all while saving everyone time. Frank notes that in today’s market, he continues to see the trends of updating and expanding kitchens and baths, enlarging or adding on master suites, and gaining square footage for young adults and aging parents—all projects he and his team can make a reality for you.

Inside Effects Inside Effects has offered design and remodeling products, fabrication services, and professional installation for new construction and renovation projects for more than 15 years. In April, the company opened a new 10,000-squarefoot showroom, and they continue to be commited to customer satisfaction. “Our showroom features 20 stone slab colors and a vast selection of tile, including exclusive brands like Walker Zanger, Lunada Bay, and Stone Impressions,” says designer Leslie Tetrev. “We also offer cabinet hardware, faucets, sinks, and flooring.” When it comes to kitchen and bath design, Leslie says to let your individuality guide your decisions. “Always start with the one element that is most important to you, whether that’s a specific quartzite countertop slab, a backsplash you love, or a super cool faucet,” she says. “Wherever you start, we have plenty of options to complement that and bring the look together.” In addition to the new showroom in North Little Rock, Inside Effects has ties to Contemporary Concepts and Stone Studio, both based in Texarkana.

Leigh Lusk Interiors With a lifelong passion for homes and interiors, Leigh Lusk opened her own design firm in 2015 with a focus on kitchen and bathroom remodeling. Now, she’s expanded to offer complete design-build services as an experienced interior designer and general contractor. “I love fixing things, especially helping people figure out hard spaces,” she says. “We focus a lot of time on not only design, but budgets and timelines, too, and have a team that oversees every

detail.” By doing material selection and ordering before the project begins and being onsite almost every day, Leigh is able to avoid common project pitfalls for her clients. “Their homes become our homes, we take great pride and care in our work,” she says. Additionally, Leigh Lusk Interiors is opening a private design studio in early 2022, where you’ll be able to shop tile, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and more in person.

PATTERNS WE LOVE

Paisley Print You may have heard this print referenced as a teardrop, shell, or even a comma. Whatever the comparison, paisley has a distinctive curved form that dates back to the 1800s. During this time, patterned cashmere shawls imported from India were all the rage in Europe. In an effort to meet demand, a factory in Paisley, Scotland, began producing machine-made versions. Here, they tried to mimic the handmade Mogul motifs found on the originals, which led to the invention of a new pattern. Taking its name from the factory town, paisley became widely popular and continues to be a classic print for everything from menswear to upholstered goods.
