Hometown + Home New DV Shelter Housing Project, Berkeley, CA UC Berkeley, Architectural Design Studio 100C Fall 2019 | Individual work | Instructor Mia Zinni
Domestic violence shelter, as a new type of short-term multi-family housing, has been under social problems, such as lack of "home" feeling and privacy between residents. Questioning on apartment building which is usually adopted as DV shelter, the project proposes a new type of housing which combines the efficiency of apartment building and function of healing for residents. This project extracts geometry of typical housing as cultural icon of home to invoke intimacy within home and encourage social activity through differnt spatial experiences. In addition, privacy is as one of the continuing issues to address. The design of the two street-facing facades mimics the street elevations on each street, making the building merge into the area of intersection of both residential area and commercial area.
Geometry: Home As The Connection Extracting the geometry form of typical single family house and typical commercial buildings, the project re-organised the arrangement of typical community buildings, and reverse the typical use of each geometry, which emphasizes the family house geometry as the center to connect people.

The mix of residential area and commercial area gives the site characteristics. Taking the mixed nature of the site as a form inspiration, the program also concerns three major users (single, family, and staff). While separated in individual massings, they are encourage to have social activities in inserted common spaces.
Ground plan Walking through the corridor invokes the experien of walking along the street in hometown.
Privacy and merging into community: The site is around the corner, which makes the building has two sides face to the street. The two different qualities of facades in commercial area and residential area meet at the corner. The facade open to commercial area is more of rectangular shape, while the facade open to residential area is using gable roof, both of them are mimicing surrounding conditions.
The building takes advantage of surrounding buildings to provide privacy and sense of securty for residents of the building, who need cure in particular. While having limited openings facing to streets, large openings facing to courtyard are introduced to get natural lignt and to encourage people interaction.

Public Common Area and Internal Connection Between common area for family users and for single users, circulation connects them into a closer entity to encourage more interactions between these two groups.
Common space concerns about family users, who need to take care of their children. Visual transparency not only encourage different groups of users to get involved in interaction with people, but also provides convenience for parents to take care of their children in playing area.
Private Communual
Unit: Self-Support Continuing with the idea of intersection geometry, unit design uses movable panels to formulate different room settings, according to user's preference, which help them gain back the self-suppot in their life.

Breathing The Urban Institute, San Francisco, CA UC Berkeley, Architectural Design Studio 100B Spring 2019 | Individual work | Instructor Keith Plymale
The project is meant to be the breathing center of San Francisco which inhales and exhales air flows and traffic flows through out a year, which is unique to the city. Through slits and gaps between program “floating” masses which are lifted by the columns and beams, the building itself absorbs all kinds of flows through out the city and welcomes flows of people coming around. Within the building people continuously experience between open and close spaces as a flow of air passing through the city. The auto-mechanical ETFE shading skin not only catches the wind flow but also creates a semi-open and translucent open area for people to emerge into the city of breathing the air.

Site analysis of wind and fog in San Francisco. The annual pattern of both wind and fog shows a rhythm of "going in and out", as the city is breathing.
Conceptual section cut detail. This ETFE shading skin not only helps with natural ventilation, but also generates translucent lightning effect to the building. Each unit of ETFE facade has two thin layers between which air spaces can deflect sunlight.
VENTILATION Guided by facade and slim gaps between masses, wind flows gentally and effectively pass through the whoe building, providing good ventilation. Ventilation

The project was developped from the study of solid and void, where an interesting moment of series of parallel coplanar was created by subtracting volumes in massings. This final project of library continues studying the spatial quality and experiencial quality of parallel coplanars, incoporate two systems of parallel planars to regulate the irregular spaces, creating an atmosphere of infinity and calmness.
Form Study: Solid and Void Initial form study with intersection and subtraction of massings. Coplanar condition is created repetitively.
Based on previous study, further research and study on parallel coplanar systems in actually scale were done by designing exterior stairs at the planes. The sense of infinity and regulation of space were created.
Axonometric analysis of final design of library. Driven by the idea of coplanar condition and the rhythm in them, the design set up two set of coplanars, which are stairs and bookshelves, in order to regular this dynamic space.

Paradox: Rev(Conc)eal — A Historical Walk Through Water and Ruins Observation Tower and Community Center, Guardamar, Spain UC Berkeley, Berkeley Summer Abroad Summer 2019 - Spring 2020 | Individual work | Instructor Alejandro Salazar
In the long time of human discovering history, there has always been a question if we should or should not rebuild or recreate the historical ruins. Behind the question, the true paradox is whether people understand and related to the history by broken pieces or by the original appearance. The project, located in a coastal city with various culture experience in the westsouthern Spain, is to discuss the relationship between people and history by redefining the role that architecture plays in connecting the present and the past. By learning from the relationship historical geology and ruins, the project is to create different visiting experiences that constantly changing back and forth in order to present as an observor the existing but unawaring paradoxes between the nature and the historical ruins and to raise citizens and visitors' awareness of the paradox within history from the surroudings.
Site Analysis: Conceal or Protect the History The city Guardamar has rich layers of ruins and history, thanks to its unique geological condition. The Mediterrenean sea striking to its shore creates "longshore wave" which creates layers of dunes that cover the ruins completely from previous culture. It is also a paradox: the water protect the culture or hinder people to know the culture?

To the Paradox Two paradoxes respectively between water and ruins, and between people and history. However, human are at a position where the inborn culture and history are undiscoverd to them. The project is trying to reconnect people to the culture that they belong to and reveal the paradoxes to them.

Site Plan The water nearby the site and city fabric geometry are woven in to the site; Three major historical ruins intersect at the site. Thus, water, city, and history are connecty by the site.
Program The three wings were assigned to blue the researchers, yellow the visitors, and red the communities. It corresponds to the entry way direction they come.
Intersect and Reveal Overlapped spaces are designed for different groups of people to interact.
Water and Circulation The waterway guides people to enter the community center, and the circulations align with them.
Light and experience Skylight and observation deck are introduced along people circulation in the community center.

View Connection Three observation decks completely go through the tower massing, follows the directions of ruins from Islamic time, Medieval and Roman respectfully.
Reverse time experience The display program follows chronological order to give people a continuing experience of walking through history.
Circulation: In and Out The miandering circulation connects the three observation decks.
Vertical Walk Experience: True and False The observation tower is designed to raise people's thinking and awareness to their own culture and history, realising the paradox in recovering the history. The interior spaces changes from dark and closed AR display room, to bright and open observation decks to view the ruins. Through going in and out the formal and informal spaces, people can experience a feel of paradox.
Construction I: "Catilever" Steel Construction Work UC Berkeley, Introduction to Construction 160 Spring 2019 | Collaborate with Chleo Z, Joey X, Yohana A.
The metal stair project requires a 1/2 scale stair for cat including a handrail, which meets the stair codes. Considering the handrail as part of supporting structure, we designed the handrail and stringer together which is seemingly a folding single piece. Its elegance relies on its thin profile and subtle balance. The overhung stair treads create a fun place for cats to play. The wood tower project requires a tower with 6 inches cantilever to reach the height of the ceiling. Considering the lightweight and budget, we focused the form on an equilateral triangle because of its sufficient structural stability. Its elegance relies on its repetiveness and twisting movements with forms of triangles. Dimension 2'X12'4"X2' Material 1X2 wood studs
