The Neighborhood Located

in San Diego’s North County, Oceanside is the third largest city in the county. Bordered by Vista and Carlsbad, the three cities form a tri-city area. The U.S. Marine base at Camp Pendleton is to the north. Oceanside has easy access to Routes 5, 76, and 78. San Diego is 35 miles south, Orange County 20 miles north, and Los Angeles 85 miles north. First incorporated on July 3, 1888, Oceanside began as an agricultural area in the late 1700s in the San Luis Rey Valley. The Mission San Luis Rey, founded in 1798, is open for tours. To the west of the mission lies Oceanside Harbor. On a sunny afternoon, stroll along paths that wind around Oceanside Harbor Village. Stop in at the Lighthouse Oyster Bar and Grill and grab a seat on the upper deck, below the lighthouse, and watch boats as they enter the harbor. Lunch on fish tacos or sip a cocktail while the sun sets. A mile south is Oceanside Pier, one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast. Grab a fishing pole and see what you can catch. Or stop in at Ruby’s Diner at the end of the pier for a burger. Oceanside offers a variety of shopping. Along the Route 78 corridor are several shopping centers, with such stores as Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, Michael’s, Ross, Home Depot, and Best Buy. The newly renovated The Shoppes at Carlsbad, an indoor mall, is anchored by Macy’s and Regal Cinemas. Restaurants in the area include Islands, Yard House, and Outback Steak House. Downtown Oceanside features Mary’s Family Restaurant, Café 101, Northern Pine Brewing, and dog-friendly Bagby Beer Company. Oceanside Unified School District has 16 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 2 high schools, and MiraCosta College. Palomar College and San Marcos State University are in nearby San Marcos. Tri-City Medical Center is located just north of Route 78, and Kaiser Hospital is a short distance away in San Marcos.

Oceanside offers a laid-back beach community with a suburban feel that is close to all Southern California has to offer.
