Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Rosenberg & Co. continues the Rosenberg family’s distinguished tradition of exhibiting both Modern and contemporary art. The drawings and works on paper in this catalogue, offered at the Salon du Dessin, represent a rich selection within the history of European abstraction.
Figurative works, such as Aristide Maillol’s (1861–1944) studies of monumentalized, Grecian females, or the imaginative and modern illustrations of creatures by Jean Lurçat (1892–1966), provide a glimpse into the inevitable confluence of abstraction and the study of nature. Conversely, colorful and fragmented works by Auguste Herbin (1882–1960) and Henry Valensi (1883–1960) are exciting examples of the stylistic fluidity and discovery that surrounded geometric abstraction. The selected works are indicative of the pioneering spirit and compositional experimentation that was essential to the art of the twentieth century.
