ROSS SCHOOL 2013–2014
annual report
ON THE COVER Artwork by Lillian A. ‘19 In Cultural History class, seventh graders learn about the glyph-based writing system employed by the ancient Maya. In their Visual Arts class, they create their own glyphs, imitating the Maya style by incorporating animals and symbols that are important to them, as the Maya did.
In compiling our lists of contributors, we have strived to be as accurate as possible. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inadvertent omissions, and notify Ross School Development Office, 18 Goodfriend Drive, East Hampton, New York 11937.
The 2013–2014 year was an exciting time at Ross. Our progressive Ross School Spiral Curriculum continues to offer an unparalleled educational experience, pushing us to rise to the challenge of being innovative and forwardlooking as we, with help from so many of you, work to support the people and programs at Ross. As we move forward with another stellar year, we understand that Ross School’s success is nurtured by those of you who contribute your time, talents, and resources. We are most appreciative! Every August, Ross faculty and staff come together for the Ross Institute Summer Academy—three weeks of reflection, in-depth planning for the school year, and engaging presentations from our founder Courtney Sale Ross, mentors, and world-renowned experts. The theme for our Academy this year was sustainability and taking action in our local and global communities. In response to moving exchanges with invited guests and scholars, we closely examined the sustainability thread in our curriculum and developed ideas for furthering students’ understanding of this critical issue. As we continue to strive to provide the highest quality of education for our students, we are ever conscious of incorporating worthy initiatives and effective practices so that we remain groundbreakers in the field of education. Won’t you join us by helping sustain the incomparable Ross experience for our students, both today and for generations to come? As you review your philanthropic plans, we hope Ross School is high on the list of your priorities. After all, as Benjamin Franklin once said, “an investment in education pays the best interest.” The following annual report provides a financial overview of Ross School’s 2013–2014 fiscal year, as well as highlights of some of last year’s successful community events. Thank you again for your dedication and continued generosity in supporting the special opportunities extended to our Ross students. Your contributions assure that we are able to provide the best education possible for our learners, one that values their individual talents and honors their development as creative thinkers and achievers across all disciplines. With gratitude,
PATT Y LEIN

Hugs, smiles, and laughter filled the Lower School Field House at the annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day. Guests, some from as far away as the Philippines and Germany, gathered for a Book Fair and a beautiful concert featuring songs and performances by students in grades pre-nursery through 6. Afterward, grandparents and special friends accompanied the students back to their classrooms, with many stopping to see the new baby goats and other woolly and feathered residents of the Lower School farm on the way. It was a delightful day shared with families and loved ones. 9

Honorees Russell Simmons and Ross School faculty joined more than 350 guests to celebrate at the Eleventh Annual Live @Club Starlight gala. The benefit, which included live and silent auctions as well as exquisite offerings from the Ross Café, raised more than half a million dollars for Ross School programs and scholarships, including the Steven J. Ross Scholarship Fund. Cocktail hour entertainment featured alumni Lilly-Anne Merat ’07 and Forrest Gray ’10. Alexandra Fairweather ’08 and Maximilian Eicke ’07 served as emcees, welcoming guests and student speakers Selena Garcia-Torres ’14 and Autumn Coard ’22 and sharing their appreciation of their Ross education. Founder Courtney Sale Ross acknowledged contributions by faculty honorees and shared the history and legacy of Ross School. Dean of Visual Arts Jennifer Cross spoke on behalf of the faculty, and special guest Russell Simmons addressed the impact of an education in the arts on children. KC and the Sunshine Band continued the party into the night with a dazzling performance featuring classic hits including “Get Down Tonight” and “Boogie Shoes.” This past year, Ross School provided financial aid to more than 35% of the student body. Funds raised through Club Starlight continue this support into the 2014–2015 school year. Thank you to our generous donors for helping Ross give students a life-changing education! 11

The Sixth Annual Ross School Golf with the Knicks at The Bridge raised over $45,000 for programs and the Steven J. Ross Scholarship Fund. More than 50 players, including Knicks legends Larry Johnson, John Starks, Herb Williams, Anthony Bonner, Mel Davis, and John Wallace, turned out on a perfect, sunny day for some fun on the links. Ross School parents Debra Fields Feldstein, Harry Hackett III, and Toni Sacconaghi chaired the outing, which included breakfast and lunch in the clubhouse, as well as a cocktail reception and awards ceremony. Trophies were distributed to top players, including Valinda Valcich for the longest drive and Debra Fields Feldstein for the shot closest to the pin on the fifth hole. Thank you to the Knicks, Ross families and friends, and The Bridge for another memorable event and for supporting the Ross School!
