annual report

In compiling our lists of contributors, we have strived to be as accurate as possible. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inadvertent omissions, and notify Ross School Development Office, 18 Goodfriend Drive, East Hampton, New York 11937.

Thank you, one and all, for supporting the Ross School Annual Fund and the Steven J. Ross Scholarship Fund! Your gifts make a difference in the lives of every student at Ross School. On behalf of the entire Ross community, I offer heartfelt thanks for your support of our students, faculty, programs, and facilities. I applaud the generosity, commitment, and engagement of each and every parent, student, alumnus, faculty member, staff member, and friend of Ross who gave this year. Your gifts enhance the teaching and learning experience here, and without your generous support, we would not be able to provide our students with innovative, enriching educational opportunities. Your gifts to Ross School support the attraction and retention of a worldclass faculty who teach a cutting-edge, global curriculum. With your support, we provide unique and meaningful programs in the areas of wellness, athletics, visual arts, and performing arts that nurture and inspire creativity and imagination. Your gifts help us to keep class sizes small and to offer interesting course electives and life-changing learning experiences like Senior Projects. Ross School remains fully committed to our local community, and for over 20 years, the Steven J. Ross Scholarship Fund has ensured that children from all over the East End of Long Island have been able to receive an exceptional college preparatory education. This year, nearly 40% of Ross students benefited from $3 million in need-based financial aid. Since the founding of the School, more than $27 million has been dedicated to bringing deserving local children to Ross. In 2012–2013, the cost of educating Ross students exceeded tuition revenue by $6,812 per student. In independent school budgets, this amount is commonly called “the gap.” Fundraising and income from Community Programs, Summer Camp @Ross, and Summer Term @Ross help to close the gap, but gifts to the Annual Fund and the Steven J. Ross Scholarship Fund make up the other half of that subsidy. Your generosity and support of all of these programs enables us to continue preparing our students to be leaders in the 21st century, and for that we are very appreciative. With gratitude and warm regards,

GR EGG MALOBERTI, EdD D IR EC TOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEM ENT

Grandparents and Special Friends Day on the Upper and Lower School campuses was held on a beautiful spring day. The event drew one of our largest turnouts ever, with more than 100 guests attending. Guests at the Lower School enjoyed a concert of songs and band performances by students in pre-nursery through grade 5, followed by visits with faculty in students’ classrooms. Guests at the Upper School toured the woodsy campus, sat in on classes, and watched a sneak preview of Ross’s spring musical, Flower Drum Song.

Hundreds of guests flocked to Club Starlight, where more than 160 Ross parents, the largest turnout of parents in the event’s history, joined luminaries, alumni, faculty, and staff to celebrate. Made possible (and fabulous!) by Ross parents, sponsors, and volunteers, the event raised more than $650,000 for Ross School programs and scholarships, including the Steven J. Ross Scholarship Fund. Ross parent Christie Brinkley chaired the gala, and legendary Grammy Award–winning artist Cyndi Lauper performed an electric 90-minute set including classics like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “True Colors,” and “Time After Time.” Nicole Ross ’01, daughter of Founder Courtney Sale Ross, was recognized as a “woman of firsts”— the first Ross student, member of the first graduating class, and first Ross alumni member of the board. Nicole welcomed guests and spoke elegantly about her passion for philanthropy, for making education accessible to all children, and for supporting Ross School’s relationships with the communities and stakeholders of the East End. This year’s Starlight evoked a nightclub atmosphere, with lounge areas next to the stage featuring white leather couches and coffee tables. Modern, lit tables were scattered throughout the room, decorated with candles and shining glass bowls filled with floating peonies. Guests left Starlight exhilarated by the night and the experience of seeing Cyndi perform in such an intimate setting. We are excited to welcome everyone to next year’s gala, where we will continue the tradition of celebration and giving back! 11

Ross parents Andy Boyland, Vyto Kab, and Toni Sacconaghi, and Interim Head of School Gregg Maloberti chaired Ross School’s fifth annual Golf with the Knicks outing at the gorgeous The Bridge Golf Course in Bridgehampton. The event raised more than $44,000 for Ross School programs and scholarships. Fifty-six golfers tackled the fairways, their enthusiasm staving off an impending rainstorm. Members of the New York Knicks family included current Knicks player J.R. Smith; Knicks legends John Wallace, Larry Johnson, and John Starks; current Knicks assistant coaches Herb Williams and Jerry Dunn; and Knicks staff members Troy Bowers and Brendan Callahan. Players lingered in the clubhouse celebrating the trophyworthy achievements of top players Valinda Valcich, Prem Parameswaran, David Walsh, Mel Yellin, and Harry Hackett. We welcomed the children of several of our golfers as they met their Knicks idols and had T-shirts and basketballs signed. Once again, the annual Ross Golf with the Knicks event was a wonderfully fun day. PA RTICIPANTS

FIRST ANNUAL RUN FOR ROSS O C TO B E R 2 1 , 2 01 2

This exciting event attracted more than 150 participants of all ages from the entire East End and raised more than $5,600 for Ross School. The beautiful fall morning began on Main Beach with a tai chi session, a favorite Ross Wellness tradition. The run followed a flat course along a prime oceanfront and hedge-lined estate section of East Hampton and was officiated by Island Timing. After the race, families and runners relaxed and mingled, recharged with local apples and apple cider, and celebrated participants and top runners at an enthusiastic medals ceremony. We were thrilled to have so many people from the community come out to run and support Ross. It was a wonderful day filled with fun and laughter, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back for the 2nd Annual Run for Ross in 2013! SPECIAL THANKS TO SPONS ORS OF TH E FIRST ANNUAL RUN FOR ROSS
