ONE STRAIGHT STORY concept

micondó são joão de angolares

This is a dissertation of the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto, Portugal that presents the development of a project in the African country São Tomé and Principe. The project is based on a practical exercise developed during the exchange programme of the architecture study carried out in the Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad de Chile, in Santiago in the classes of Construcción Avanzada I. Besides following the specific agenda of the classes, the dissertation outlines the creative process of a specific approach to the academical project. This approach results from an explicit pedagogical method related to SãoTomé and Príncipe respecting its culture and tradition and taking into consideration all aspects of the methodology and techniques of tropical architecture. Ismael Seralgeldin says “The architect is the generalist

tutor: Arq. Hélder Casal Ribeiro type: ecological and

who speculates on how the pieces could fit together in more advantageous ways one who is concerned with what well might be.”

sustainable housing location: São Tomé e Principe, Africa duration: 3 month for the project and 8 month for the writen part school: Final project, 5th year in Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto

This project is a resume of what architecture should relay on. A house based a typical tropical house above the equator line. Taking all the sorrounding as an advantage and using it in its own favour. This is how the project works, and tries to assure a new culture of tourist in Sao Thomé. A model that was made with the intention that someday the natives could learn from it and in a Simple Straight way, as the David Lynch movie, make their own home.

INTERMODAL STATION AND CULTURAL PROMENADE

In the exchange program in Santiago de Chile, we were

set up to the challenge of revitalizing the city of Vallenar. Located in the middle of the Atacama Desert in the Huasco River Valey, Vallenar lays forgotten to the world, built upon a miner background. The task started up as a group project of drawing a master plan to the city and then ending up with a part of the plan projected individually. One the elements that was the key factor in my project, and drew to my attention in my first visit, was the endless and beautiful swamp that surrounded the river. If there wasn’t a physic barrier of and abandoned train station then Vallenar would have lead into it, as a natural limit. The Rails had been used to transport coal and other products in the beginning of the twenty century but meantime had been replaced with buses and coaches and transforming the whole zone to a marginalized area for the public use. My project emerges as an attempt of redesigning and revitalizing the urban limit, projecting and entrance porch to the city transforming the swamp to a natural park and the ancient station to an intermodal station and weekend promenade.

Much more than a just a building, the project should tutor: Arq. EliĂĄs Pratt be seen as an urban sculpture moving and playing in type: multifuncional building the boundary of the swamp and the city transferring the

intermodal station scale, sound and urban life into the Nature. The project location: Vallenar, Atacama brings new recreational programs to the society, like the Desert, Chile outdoor kitchens, amphitheatres, children playground duration: 3 month for the and Skate Park, pools, restaurants and stores. Solving in project the other hand the social demand of a new intermodal

school: Taller de station of the buses, taxis and the lift to the higher levels Arquitectura 8 semester, of the valley. The symbiosis between concrete, wood Facultad de Arquitectura y and glass, leads to a long and defining limit drawn by

Urbanismo de la Universidad a one storage building, where the transparency reigns de Chile and grabs the nature.

In the 4th year public and cultural buildings are part of the program of the Architecture school, so we were challenge to draw a Dance Academy. On the edge of Matosinhos, adjacent to the port of Leixões, opposite the market, and in relation to the drawbridge, the site is characterized by a huge scale problems – from the territory to the building, and to design and thinking of the city. So the proposal should embrace a certain part of the city inspiring visitors, not only dancers to take part as it adjusts itself to an historic settled location. For that reason my main goal was to open up the school to its surroundings and letting the public space invade the territory, but I was very eager to come up with a project the mingled into to terrain without constricting to much

The academy has a clear organization, that divides the building into two sections, the public and the private. The public area is developed in the west side and takes place in 2 floors. The main entrance leads the visitor to the foyer that is connected to public points such as the auditorium, lounge bar, the bookshop and restrooms. The private spaces, related with the school uses, are internally connected and take place in the east side. The ease with which the building opens to the outside makes the perception of the

area to whom uses it, even greater and more extensive seeming almost limitless, thus promoting the spaces to an almost antagonistic reality of what is happening there. The core of the rooms and the auditorium were designed allowing pro activity among students that have the possibility to interact and watch the trials through galleries. The library located at the highest level of the land benefits from a quiet space and view of the west of the river Leix천es.
