In these challenging days, rather than simply pause, we wanted to keep in touch with as many of you as possible and this seems like the best way to do so! Please share our website link with your contacts to help us spread our net as wide as possible, until such time, we can return to our normal hard copy distribution system, www.looklocalmagazine.co.uk - thank you. I truly hope that most of you are managing to keep well and that social distancing / self isolation isn’t proving to be too trying for you. I know it certainly takes a bit of adjustment, life has changed beyond recognition in such a short time. But it is so important that we keep our spirits up and remember that by staying at home, we really are helping the amazing key workers & NHS staff, who quite frankly, I think, all deserve medals at the end of this! What dedication and selfless devotion they are all giving. Of course, staying at home should also give us all the best chance of keeping safe and well, so it’s a win, win situation really, however challenging it is at times. Maybe this is a time when new skills can be learnt or a new hobby can be enjoyed? After 16 years in publishing I’ve been hankering after a little sabbatical for a while, but this is not an option when producing monthly magazines! This is not quite what I had in mind for sure, but there is certainly more time to get things done in the house! I’ve even had a go at painting. I’m not very artistic but it is very relaxing and I’m really enjoying it. Our on-line magazines are not quite the same as the normal printed versions; obviously there is no information on local events or notifications regarding local organisations’ meetings for you to attend, but we have added a few items which we hope may help to entertain you and your families. A few quizzes and puzzles and most of our usual contributions to read too. Also included of course, are our loyal advertisers, many of whom cannot provide the services they usually offer, at this precise time. I hope that if you are planning any work which may need their expertise in the coming months, when restrictions are lifted, that you will continue to support them. Bear in mind, that some of them are still available in an emergency and for some services, so do contact them if you think they can help. We are lucky to have such great local businesses, trades and services to help us out when needed. This is a difficult time for all businesses and we certainly want to support our loyal advertisers and hope they will soon be able to get back to work. With very best Regards,
Ros x ROS REDFERN - EDITOR

Given the latest Government updates, where both parents may now find themselves working from home, (unless they are key workers), both parents will need to decide between one another, how feasible it is to have the children in their care and how this care is apportioned, bearing in mind that it is expected that children of separated families can move between parents’ homes – albeit this should be as limited as possible. Flexibility is recommended, to address the rapidly-evolving situation. Compassion and understanding Being calm in times of stress is particularly difficult. Remember, your children are learning from you. We are teaching them how to be reliant, so they will look to us for guidance. Parents are most likely to reduce conflict if they can both work together to be patient, open and honest with one another in attempting to coparent during times of stress. Compromise is key in the best interests of children. Despite emergency measures being implemented to address how the Courts will continue to conduct family law matters, the Court system remains strained regardless of the pandemic. The Courts increasingly have limited availability. Dispute resolution services
may be harder to access and, therefore, common sense, combined with engagement and good communication, may be an assured path to problem solving. Worryingly, many Sarah Houston may experience reductions to income and may even lose their jobs in the coming weeks and months. As such, financial concern may impact both homes. This, in turn, may influence what can be paid by way of child support or maintenance. Again, you may wish to take advice from a specialist family lawyer on how this may impact you. It is clear that the situation with respect to COVID-19 is not going to resolve overnight. We will need to adapt to the way we work, socialise and communicate in order to co-parent effectively. POEMCORNER OUR HEROES I’ll tell you a tale, that’s been recently written. Of a powerful army, so Great it saved Britain. They didn’t have bombs and they didn’t have planes. They fought with their hearts and they fought with their brains. They didn’t have bullets, armed just with a mask. We sent them to war, with one simple task. To show us the way, to lead and inspire us. To protect us from harm and fight off the virus. It couldn’t be stopped by our bullet proof vests. An invisible enemy, invaded our chests. So we called on our weapon, our soldiers in Blue. “All Doctors, All Nurses, Your Country needs you”. We clapped on our streets, hearts bursting with pride. As they went off to war, while we stayed inside. They struggled at first, as they searched for supplies. But they stared down the virus, in the whites of its eyes. They leaped from the trenches and didn’t think twice. Some never came back, the ultimate price. So tired, so weary, yet still they fought on. As the virus was beaten and the battle was won. The many of us, owe so much, to so few. The brave and the bold, our heroes in Blue. So let’s line the streets and remember our debt. We love you, our heroes, Lest we forget.

HELP GUIDE - Our new website and improved communication with members has come at a timely moment, in a way we would never have predicted. If you haven’t yet visited www.fetchamresidents. co.uk please do so! There is a ‘help guide’ for residents on where to access assistance in Fetcham for everyday things such as food delivery and collecting medicines. There are also quick links to the details of the Council Tax relief scheme, and other financial aid measures, being administered by Mole Valley District Council on behalf of the Government. On a lighter note, with many of us doing a lot more home cooking, one of our committee members, Sara Gyngell, is kindly providing some of her tried and trusted recipes. Look for the link to ‘Sara’s Lockdown Suppers’ on the website home page! WILDLIFE - With the enforced lockdown both before and after Easter, many of us will have spent much more time walking and cycling in recent weeks. The roads have emptied, the skies are largely
devoid of aircraft, and even helicopters are few and far between. There is a pervasive stillness which only our most elderly residents could possibly remember. As a result the birdlife seems to be asserting itself, or is it just that in the absence of everything else we have the time and space to watch and listen? This is why retaining our trees and green space is so important. MEMBERSHIP - In normal times (remember them?) April is the time for our AGM in the Village Hall and a reminder to renew your subscription, or join us for the first time. So a special thanks this year to all of our Fetcham residents who have already renewed. Our membership is growing, and looking ahead this can only be a source of strength. Most of you are now electing to renew or join by bank transfer. There is a newly designed form for this on our website, although we have retained the option of using PayPal. If you would prefer to renew by cheque or cash, please use the printed form below. Our road stewards no longer collect money door to door.

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945
We’d like to thank Ros Thomas and her team for carrying on their work under the Covid-19 restrictions and inviting us to contribute to this online version of the Ashtead & Leatherhead Local. Postponement of AGM We are sorry that the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that Ashtead Residents’ Association has had to postpone its AGM scheduled for 29th April; we will reinstate the meeting once we have the go ahead from government to resume normal life. In the meantime, we are publishing the Chairman’s Report and Annual Accounts for 2019 on our website. The postponement of the AGM has meant that the Election of Officers has also not taken place but will be held over until the AGM can be reinstated later in 2020. Helping each other though Covid-19 We’d like to thank all those residents who have volunteered to help others during the current crisis, with neighbours offering to do shopping or simply be on call for a chat or to help in any way they can. Similarly, many businesses have turned themselves around to provide online help and/or to introduce home delivery services, including restaurants that are continuing to operate their delivery service for take-away meals or have introduced this service to help see people through this difficult time. If you would like to let people know contact details for either voluntary help to neighbours or for businesses providing a home delivery service, please email ashteadra@tiscali.co.uk and we will include your details in the directories for Local
Help Groups and Local Food Deliveries on our website. Future Mole Valley – draft Local Plan 2018-2033 Now that the consultation on the draft Local Plan has closed, Mole Valley Council will be pulling together all the responses and taking them into consideration as it develops the next draft of the Plan which will define the Council’s “preferred” sites. ARA’s response is on our website ashteadresidents.org.uk – go to the Local News tab, click on Local Issues and then click on Mole Valley – Draft Local Plan. Work on the next version of the Plan will be done over the next few months and will include more detailed discussion with infrastructure providers to drill down into infrastructure issues that might give pause for thought on some of the sites that have been proposed for development. We hope and trust that further analysis of the infrastructure needs will either result in a site being dropped from the Plan or else elicit a commitment from the Council that development will not go ahead until the necessary infrastructure has been put in place whether it’s for roads, schools, health provision, or flood alleviation, sewers and drainage. At the time of writing, we don’t know the number of responses that the Council received but we want to thank all Ashtead residents who took the time to reply to the consultation and only hope that many of the points that have been raised will be taken seriously by the Council as they make the final decision on how to proceed with the next version of the Plan.

MOLE VALLEY The Best
AGE Concern Bargains
For the best online prices, it’s a really good Will Writing Service idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.
If you are over 50 and live in the Mole Valley area, you can use Age Concern Mole Valley’s Will Writing Service. Once a month local solicitors, Meaby & Co (formerly Hart Scales & Hodges) are taking appointments for Will Writing at the Age Concern Mole Valley offices in Dorking. A donation of £100 can be given to Age Concern Mole Valley for the service. A solicitor would normally charge over £250 plus VAT per Will).

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU No contact service available
During these times of dramatic change due to the Corona Virus and social distancing you may appreciate knowing we are still fully functional and providing sales of product via doorstep delivery and also providing our full technical support services via telephone and remote connection to your PC or Mac and our doorstep device collection and repair service. If you are one of our Total Care support customers our staff will be able to access your machine in the usual way, without any personal contact at all. We have seen a considerable increase in support requests for remote communication systems like Zoom, Teams, Skype, Houseparty and the likes. As a general tip once the app is downloaded on your device, the provider or meeting organiser will give you a session ID and
password, both of these are unique to that one session you are involved with. The session ID and password for your meeting last week, is unlikely to work with the meeting this week. Please bear in mind the passwords need to be precise, uppercase, lower case and all punctuations must be used as indicated. Our stocks are being replenished daily, we offer free of charge local delivery on all items, full details of our products can be seen on www.tecres.co.uk, or please feel free to call us on 01372-370300. Currently we have reduced our business hours slightly to Monday to Friday 9-00am to 5:30pm - during the Corona virus restriction. Thank you for your continued support and please stay safe.

Surrey Libraries online All Surrey Libraries have closed from 20th March for the foreseeable future. However, whilst you may not be able to physically come into the library at the moment, there are still plenty of things that Surrey Libraries are able to offer you online. Are you home schooling children whilst the schools are shut and need some inspiration? Please have a look at our fun and educational activities for children and young people. Go to the Surrey Libraries website www.surrey.gov.uk/libraries and click on the links. Topics include Top Tips for Parents, English, Reading and other key subjects. Adults are not forgotten either. Have a look at the Online Reference Shelf and browse the online courses which are available. How about learning Tai Chi, Photography or finding out about the Lost Worlds of South America? We also offer access to wide range of newspapers and magazines. Instant access to all these resources are available with your library card. If you are not a member you can join instantly online. Our very young users and their carers may be missing our Rhymetimes but you can carry on singing with Pebbles and friends by joining a Rhymetime on the Surrey Library Facebook page. If you already have items out on loan, they have been extended to at least 1st July 2020. We do ask borrowers not to return books in our letterbox/bookdrop at the moment. The reservation/requests service has been suspended. We hope to be able to welcome you back in to the Surrey Libraries very soon but in the meantime keep reading, keep learning and stay in touch with updates via the Surrey Libraries website www.surrey.gov.uk/libraries

They wash, they turn, the people ill and dying But never once will you hear them sighing Then at the end of their day how can they be That ordinary Mum who goes home to get tea. Exhaustion then takes them to bed to rest And sleep in the knowledge they’ve done their best Then with the dawn arrives the light And steals away that blessed night. Another day, another chance To slow Corona’s deadly advance The patients wait for their nurses smile And know all will be well ... for a little while.

A CATS PROTECTION SUCCESS STORY
Jasmine & Hutch
Jan and Avril wanted to adopt two cats, and so came to visit siblings Jasmine and Hutch in their foster accommodation in September 2018. They were instantly wanted to have them! They were so friendly, that Jan & Avril felt like taking them home with them there and then. Jasmine has some ongoing health issues but as previously seasoned cat owners, they had been used to dealing with similar problems in their own elderly cats. Jasmine and Hutch were 13 years old when they went to their new home, and they very quickly became part of the furniture. They are beautiful in looks and temperament and have become more and more affectionate as we have all grown closer together. They are very fond of the children and babies that visit. They bring Jan & Avril much joy and laughter and
they love them both dearly. Despite now being 15 this year they both enjoy a game and Hutch frequently has mad moments where he flies up and down the stairs around the sitting room and jumps into the bath. He particularly loves the garden. He likes to be around people and where the action is. Jasmine is a quieter soul incredibly sweet and gentle. She loves being stroked and sleeping on one of our beds unlike her brother. She is very vocal and will nag continually until you sit down on the settee and she can cuddle up next to you. hey both want to help with our jigsaw puzzles and love joining in all our games. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect pair of cats to share our home. Hutch being a bad loser! Thank you, Cats Protection! Jan and Avril

Fetcham Tandoori has been my Curry Restaurant of choice for too many years to mention! It is always a treat to visit this family run restaurant, which opened way back in 1983. Following a recent refurbishment and the introduction of some wonderful new dishes, it’s now better than ever. We went along one Sunday evening and Anis Haque the owner, treated us to a selection of the new regional dishes they have on the menu. The restaurant looks really lovely. It is newly decorated and tastefully elegant. No electric water fall pictures here! The service was, as always, friendly and efficient, the staff know their regular customers, but everyone is made to feel very welcome. Anis told us about his decision to introduce some new dishes, which are more authentic and more in tune with the
food he grew up eating. In fact, his own mother’s cooking is the main influence for the new menu selections, and she spent many hours in the kitchen with Anis, putting together this exciting new menu. Ingredients are sourced locally, are organic when possible and are bought daily. Suppliers include highly regarded local butcher, Conisbee and Son’s, as well as Gray’s Gelato Ice Cream from Goldstone Farm. The cooking methods have also changed. Things are done in a far more traditional way; spices are slowly roasted and ground, in-house to create wonderfully fresh flavours and vibrant colours, and the end results are like individual works of art. In the photos included here, you can see for yourself some of the food we enjoyed; the flavours were mouth watering
and it was so good to try something a little different. Dishes are inspired by, and come from, different regions such as Bangladesh and India and these include a great selection of Vegan dishes and even a little bit of street food too! Of course, all the old favourites are still available for the slightly less adventurous, but I do strongly recommend stepping out of your comfort zone. If you are a little unsure about what to order, just ask. Anis or one of his team, will be more than happy to guide you. You won’t regret it. The take away menu is a little different from the a la carte, but has also been carefully put together to still offer a great experience at home too. I take my hat off to you Fetcham Tandoori, this is surely a winning combination. Your restaurant offers
a wonderful place to eat fabulous and authentic curry dishes with friends and family, whilst at the same time experiencing something a little different, which is truly special. THANK YOU FOR A LOVELY EVENING. WE WILL BE BACK VERY SOON. The dishes we enjoyed were:Bombay Bhel Beetroot & Aloo Murug Chicken Chicken Chettinad Murug Makoni Sagolir Manksho Saffron Pilau Peshwari Naan

At Wild by Design we are embracing the ‘make do and mend’ spirit! With Garden Centres and Nurseries closed, many of us are finding our normal garden products difficult to find despite having the time and motivation to get cracking in the garden. Here are some handy tips to keep your garden flourishing and attracting wildlife! Our first tip is to compost your own waste. Find a quiet or corner of your garden to hide your heap from view. We construct our heaps by wiring pallets together. These may be difficult to find in the current climate. All you need is a structure that will allow water to drain through whilst holding together your fruit and vegetable waste as well as any green waste from the garden. Not only will you be producing your own compost for the garden, compost heaps provide a fantastic habitat for insects, small mammals and reptiles. The eggs shown in the picture are that of a Grass snake and they were found on the Wild by Design allotment compost heap in Bookham. Grass snakes are Great Britain’s only egg laying snake. All of our other native reptiles are ovoviviparous. This means that the females incubate fertilized eggs inside their bodies and give birth to live young. Our second tip is to save your coffee grounds. They are fantastic for mulching acid loving plants such as Primrose, Camelia, Rhododendron, Blueberry Bushes, Azalea, Sweetcorn, Hydrangeas and

Our third tip is to have a Banana! When you’re done make sure you throw your peel at the base of a Rose. Banana skins are full of potassium an essential ingredient for healthy roses. Whilst your roses won’t survive on banana alone, putting banana skin around the base of your roses will help to fix potassium into the ground. Roses are a fantastic way to attract pollinating insects and they are Great Britain’s favourite flower. Chopped up skins work best as they break down quicker but if you don’t have a knife handy then the whole thing is also good. Throughout the Covid crisis Wild by Design Landscapes are publishing a series of educational, wildlife related work sheets to teach kids about their gardens creatures and to give parents a much-needed break. BOOK REVIEWS ‘The Mirror & the Light’ by Hilary Mantel (Hardback £25.00) This magnificent novel is the perfect antidote and consolation in these grim times we’re currently enduring. I’m only halfway through (it is 900 pages) but I’m eking it out as I don’t want to finish it. You do need to have read ‘Wolf Hall’ and ‘Bring Up the Bodies’ but I’m sure anyone who embarks on this book will have done so. Hilary Mantel is an exceptionally skilled writer of historical fiction, her detailed research and knowledge of the characters and period brings it to life and makes it a joy to read. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read.
‘Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead’ by Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones, (Paperback £8.99) This is a murder mystery set in the bleakest Polish midwinter. Janina Duszejlko is a former bridge engineer, school teacher, now reluctantly retired, and an astrology afficionado trying to make sense of the chaos around her. It is left to Mrs Duszejlko to investigate the murders of the men in her village and the disappearance of her beloved dogs. She is “already at an age and additionally in a state where I must always wash my feet thoroughly before bed, in the event of having to be removed by an ambulance at night”, which straight away endeared her to me. She is immediately present on the page, brilliantly funny and deeply melancholic about the world. She has romantic notions about the Czech Republic just across the valley. This was one of the best reads of the year and thoroughly enjoyable.
‘The Holdout’ by Graham Moore (Hardback £12.99) ‘The Holdout’ is a riveting legal thriller featuring a strong female lawyer. Maya Searle engages your support as she battles to save not just herself and her career, but also the lives and reputations of others.

The Arts Society Ashtead got off to a great start in 2020, with excellent lectures in January and February, as well as our AGM at which we voted in our new PR Secretary, Joyce Hampton (you have probably seen the various posters and flyers which Joyce has been posting around town). But what a difference a couple of weeks made! In common with all societies and clubs, COVID-19 has obliged us to cancel all our activities at least for the first half of the year. ASHTEAD

For those of you who read about Ruth exploits every month, how do you think Ruth and her family would be coping during this time of social distancing and isolation? I’ll have another story for you next month so perhaps you’ll find out! However, this month, I’d like to draw your attention to something else I’m doing, if that’s alright. It’s a scary time for all of us, especially older people and those with health issues. Are you self isolating? Do you know anyone who is spending time away from others because of the Coronavirus? Would it be a good idea to have something positive to do to pass the time and take our minds off the worry of it all? I think it’s the perfect opportunity for

It would also give us a good reason to go through all those old photos... I’ve started a Facebook group to get people together. Every week and every day there are things to think about, things to do and memories to share and talk about with each other. This Facebook group is completely free and I’ve been uploading activity sheets for you to print out and pass on to friends and family who may not be on the internet. paella-style chicken chipolatas Love paella? Then have a go at this spin on the classic Spanish dish using tasty chicken chipolatas. Save the extra oil from the jar of peppers and use in salad dressings or to fry vegetables. Delicious served with a smooth red wine like rioja.
ingredients method 280g jar Cooks’ Ingredients Chargrilled Red Peppers in Sunflower Oil 12 Waitrose & Partners Chicken Chipolatas 4 garlic cloves, crushed 2 large tomatoes, coarsely grated 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika 250g bomba paella rice 160g pack sliced runner beans 500ml fresh chicken stock 2 rosemary sprigs (Serves 4)
1. Drain the peppers, reserving the oil. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large frying pan or shallow casserole dish over a medium-high heat and fry the chicken chipolatas, turning regularly, for 8-10 minutes, until golden all over; lift out of the pan and set aside. 2. Add the garlic, tomatoes and paprika to the pan, season and fry for 2-3 minutes until most of the water from the tomatoes has evaporated. Stir in the rice, drained peppers and the runner beans, then tip in the chicken stock. Bring to a simmer, return the chipolatas to the pan and nestle in the rosemary sprigs. Simmer briskly for 10 minutes, then turn to the lowest heat, cover with a lid (or a sheet of foil) and simmer very gently for 5 minutes until the sausages are cooked through and the rice is tender. 3. Take the pan off the heat and rest for 5 minutes. Serve with lemon wedges and a green salad, if liked.

KEEP CALM AND GRANGE ON!!!
Firstly, I would like to thank the local community for all your support and heartfelt messages, we are so grateful to you and hope everyone is keeping safe. Along with everyone else, this pandemic has had an unprecedented effect on The Grange. We support over 125 people a week who either live on our main site in Bookham, off site in flats owned by The Grange, or at home with relatives. During a normal week, the people we support access a full programme of sessions to not only teach them new skills but also enrich their daily lives. As soon as the Coronavirus hit, we immediately felt the impact. Restrictions on visitors to our main site in Bookham were put in place, in order to keep people as safe as possible, and our shops, cafes and all offsite activities stopped - literally overnight. All of our immediate fundraising activities were also postponed or cancelled which will have a long-lasting impact on our income. With government guidelines about social distancing in place, it was proving impossible to continue with our usual sessions, so more creative one-to-one activities have been implemented instead, for example, going for a walk around our lovely grounds (2m apart of course!),

cycle rides around the site and working in our walled garden. Activity packs have been posted to those who were no longer visiting or living on our site, providing a welcome distraction and keeping people’s skills going! So far people have been making pomp oms and posting their photos to us and we are about to send out worry doll kits along with a live streamed tutorials and you tube videos. For a person with a learning disability, any change in their usual routine has a big impact on them. To suddenly find themselves with none of their usual sessions to go to, not seeing the same faces in the same environment, not regularly seeing their friends or tutors, has an immediate and profound effect. Here at The Grange, our amazing staff are doing everything possible to keep in touch with and support, not only the disabled adults who attend our services, but our team of 120 volunteers, parent carers and other stakeholders. Sending our best wishes to each and every one of you and hope you and your loved ones are keeping safe during such challenging times. wildlifetrusts.org/take-action-insects. It’s packed full of tips, useful info, and links to finding out more, all aimed at helping individuals and families make simple yet crucial changes to helping insects through the ways we shop, garden and run our homes. The guide has been authored by The Wildlife Trusts working with partner organisations including Buglife, Pesticide Action Network (PAN) and Garden Organic. It has been launched as part of a wider campaign called Action for Insects, which looks to reverse recent drastic population declines among insects. A recent report published by the campaign, authored by Professor David Goulson, concluded that 41% of insect species now faced extinction around the world, while population declines were widespread across other insect species. The report also highlighted the vital part played by insects in human food production and in their support of countless other birds, mammals and plants.
insects during these challenging times With the human population under threat from the Covid-19 pandemic, it has caused many of us to look more closely at nature. As spring gathers pace, more and more people are finding solace in the fascinating species that inhabit our gardens, parks and open spaces. With this in mind, local conservation charity Surrey Wildlife Trust is launching a new initiative today that urges us all to play a part in reversing the failing fortunes of some of our most easily overlooked wildlife: insects. Surrey Wildlife Trust is launching a new practical pack, Your Guide to Taking Action for Insects, which will help everyone do their bit in reversing decades of decline for the UK’s struggling bees, butterflies, moths, bugs and beetles. The colourful 20-page illustrated guide is available as a free download via www.

Your Guide to Taking Action for Insects recognises that some insects aren’t always popular with the public when it comes to wildlife, and that this is especially true when applied to gardeners. However, it highlights the crucial roles they play in pollinating flowers and crops, controlling pests and natural recycling, plus the beauty and joy that they bring to our lives.
space they have into a better place for mini-beasts, be it a window box, a garden or an allotment. Our guide gives them the inspiration and the practical know-how to take a few simple steps to making a big difference to their local wildlife. Insects are one of the key building blocks of life on which we and countless other familiar species from hedgehogs to garden birds rely. If we follow the guide’s advice as gardeners, shoppers and homeowners we can turn the tide on insect declines.” James Campbell, Garden Organic CEO says In a range of top tips for helping insects in people’s gardens, it gives guidance on going chemical- and peat-free, along with advice on which plants are best at combining colour, scent and attraction to bees and butterflies across the seasons. The guide stresses that all outdoor spaces, whatever their size and location, from tower block balconies to cottage gardens, can make a real difference to restoring insect numbers. Sarah Jane Chimbwandira, chief executive of Surrey Wildlife Trust, said: “We’re delighted to be launching Your Guide to taking Action for Insects. The warmer weather of spring combined with the current restrictions placed upon everyone in response to the Covid-19 virus means that people are spending more time in their gardens, yards and on their balconies. This guide provides people with advice on how to make positive changes to help insects, which will not only help the insects but boost morale too! We’re asking people to make whatever outdoor
“Garden Organic is pleased to be supporting the Action for Insects campaign. All gardeners and growers should celebrate insects who are part of the natural chain of life. Organic gardeners also help by creating habitats and shelter, as well as providing plants to feed and support insect life” Josie Cohen, CEO Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN UK) says “Everyone has a role to play in making the world less toxic so insects can flourish. By stopping using pesticides in your home and garden, and supporting businesses working to reduce chemicals in their supply chains, you can contribute towards building a healthier and more sustainable planet for both us and our sixlegged friends.” Your Guide to Taking Action for Insects is available now as a free download via The Wildlife Trusts website www.wildlifetrusts.org/take-action-insects.

MOLE VALLEY REWILDS! Join us in repurposing your outdoor spaces, growing your own produce and encouraging more wild flowers into the district this summer.
With spring having sprung and many of us now having more time to spend in our gardens and outside spaces, Mole Valley District Council is launching a “Rewilding” campaign, to encourage residents and businesses to give nature a helping hand by repurposing and rewilding sections of their outdoor areas. We are suggesting remodelling sections of gardens or outdoor areas and creating vegetable patches. By composting (rather than recycling their garden waste) residents could also make their own supply of nutrient rich compost, to help their produce grow. By leaving sections of gardens to nature, “rewilding” will occur, allowing wild flowers to grow and encouraging much needed food and shelter for wildlife species. These species in turn will improve the bio-diversity of our area and help to make it even more beautiful and fertile. Councillor Claire Malcomson, Cabinet Member for Environment said, “The links between nature and mental well-being are well documented. By taking part in

our “Rewilding” campaign residents will benefit on many levels, be it harvesting the fruits of their labour from their new vegetable patch, utilising their home composting to nourish flowers in window beds, or watching on as a new type of wildlife is encouraged into their outside space as a result of rewilding. On a district level, the results could be immense with an increase in beautiful flora and fauna in our area.” Mole Valley will be showcasing the stunning results of your repurposing on its social media Instagram feed. So when plants spring to life, your first produce is harvested, your garden starts to rewild, or you see new birds and wildlife in your outside space, please share these images with Mole Valley via Instagram using #molevalleyrewilds Look out for more information and insight into the work Mole Valley District Council does to promote species biodiversity and improve the environment.
Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Soul food? Spring has sprung and plants are waking up from their hibernation, turning green after the brown season of winter. Nature carries on regardless but this year we humans are learning to adapt to major disruptions to our lives, so there has never been a better time to explore new activities. Could this be the year you start to grow things, in your garden? Before garden centres were shut, many people were thinking of this as seeds were selling out but are still available online. If you don’t have a garden, or are house-bound, growing herbs or flowers indoors could work for you. The window sill or the conservatory could become your micro-allotment. The hardened gardeners out there won’t need telling that growing things, both flowers and food, is really enjoyable. It gets you moving, and knowing that you have nurtured and cared for something is very satisfying. In fact, I think of the things I grow as my ‘herbal pets.’ It is perfectly normal to talk to your tomato plants, isn’t it…? A top tip if you are growing in pots or containers is to allow for drainage. Water-logged roots make plants very unhappy. Pots should have holes in the bottom and ideally some stones or broken crocks under the potting compost. And of course, a dish of some sort under the pot to collect the dribbles. So what should the beginner start with? Tomatoes are surprisingly easy, and will do well in pots on the patio and indoors, as well as in the garden. The Gardeners Delight variety gives good crops of cherry tomatoes. They like a sheltered spot with well-drained soil. You can start them off indoors but, if they are going to be outside, don’t be tempted to put them outside until after the risk of frost has passed. Another popular salad plant is rocket – this will self-seed and grow like a weed once you plant it, a good choice for novice gardeners. Herbs like mint and basil do well in pots, inside or out. Mint can be a bit of a thug in the garden and will spread very easily, even coming up between patio stones, so be careful where you plant it. I have mine in an old Belfast sink, it can’t escape from that. French beans give very good yields and are easy to grow. The dwarf varieties don’t need supporting canes. I like the black ones that go green when they are cooked, for example Purple Teepee. There are so many types to choose from. Interacting with the natural world helps to refresh us mentally as well as physically. Natural colours are soothing and apparently people relax best while seeing greens and blues. Gardening, growing things or taking a walk in woodland on a sunny day gives plenty of opportunity to soak in these natural hues. And if you can’t leave the house, just looking out of the window at nature – trees, grass, birds, squirrels – gives you a decent helping of food for the soul. Bon appetit!

CATERING FOR VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLARS WITH COMMON GARDEN WEEDS Surrey Wildlife Trust tips for helping moths and butterflies Small Tortoiseshell
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is one of the most read and loved children's books in Britain, but what do we know about catering for very hungry caterpillars in our back gardens? While restaurants are shut nationwide, we can still open ‘caterpillar cafes’ in our gardens this spring and help boost the number of butterflies and moths by the summer when they are ready to emerge from their isolated chrysalis phase too. Top tip number one is don’t weed the garden everywhere. Some caterpillars love to binge out on weeds such as nettles, dandelions and brambles. And

when caterpillars need to eat, they really do need to eat and start growing immediately as a result. Caterpillars continue to lengthen at an astonishing speed by continually shedding their skins. Like many insects, caterpillars have a penchant for specific ‘food’ plants. Probably the most persecuted of all plants, the common ‘stinging’ nettle, is in fact one of the favourite foods for the comma, peacock, red admiral and small tortoiseshell caterpillars. But fear not, as gardeners know - not all nettles sting. The red deadnettle and white dead-nettle don’t sting, they are great
early nectar sources for bees, look pretty in flower and are tasty for caterpillars too. Another despised and dug up plant from many a proud lawn owner is the dandelion, which is another great source of early nectar for bumble bees in the garden. Caterpillars of the large white, orange-tip and peacock butterflies like to dine out on dandelions too. Gardeners either love or hate brambles. But butterflies love the sweet nectar from bramble flowers. They are also a top cuisine for many moth and butterfly caterpillars, such as, the comma, gatekeeper and many more. Garlic-mustard, also known as Jack-by-the-hedge, is a top caterpillar foodplant of the green-veined white and the orange-tip. Other weeds we often remove from Small Tortoiseshell Caterpillar - Vaughn Matthews
Peacock Larva
gardens are common sorrel, which is great for small copper caterpillars, thistles for painted lady caterpillars and wild teasel for red admiral and peacock caterpillars. As soon as a caterpillar is done growing and they have reached their full length and weight, they form themselves into a pupa, also known as a chrysalis. So like us butterflies and moths will also have their phase of self-isolation and in fact the pupal stage is one of the coolest stages of a butterfly’s life. From outside the chrysalis the caterpillar appears to just be resting, but on the inside it is rapidly changing. This is where the
magical transformation is taking place. Look out for the pupa, which looks like a withered leaf, hanging from the stems of the caterpillar food plant. Come later in the year, during the summer, many butterflies and moths will emerge in their dazzling array of shapes and colours and for the first time are able to spread their wings. Like The Very Hungry Caterpillar story, the butterfly or moth lifecycle brings a message of hope which Surrey Wildlife Trust would like to bring to people at this difficult time. So we encourage children and adults of all ages to leave the weeds and look out for those caterpillars munching and growing in the garden. From the plain lime-green ones, the army-style camouflaged caterpillar, to the stripey or ‘big hairy Comma Caterpillar

beast’ of a caterpillar; now is the time to look out for them, and please do share any finds on our Facebook page @surreywt, where we can help identify your finds. But please remember to put them back where you found them so they can continue to eat their favourite foods. There’s plenty of family wildlife activities to keep people busy at home and in their gardens, visit www.surreywildlifetrust.org for family activity and spotter sheets or visit www.wildaboutgardens.org.uk for info on how to create a butterfly and moth garden of your own. BEE GARDEN By Selina Botham
Award winning local garden designer Selina Botham creates a new Bee friendly garden. In a bid to add more flowers to help bees and butterflies we’ve created a bee friendly garden in our own garden. We need bees, they pollinate our plants and generally make the world a better place. There is a decline in bee numbers and according to Friends of the Earth this is due to loss of habitat together with the problems of pesticides and the effects of climate change.

Honey bees and bumble bees live in colonies. Solitary bees such as Mining bees, Mason bees and Leaf-cutter bees that nest in holes in dead wood, banks and walls. Pollinators allow plants to fruit, set seed and breed. This is turn provides food and habitat for a range of other creatures. So the health of our natural ecosystems is fundamentally linked to the health of our bees and other pollinators. To help them in our own gardens we need provide
HOME & GARDEN
shelter, water and food. Shelter. Provide sticks and stones in a pile somewhere in your garden, also leave a warm patch of soil clear for mining bees. Mature trees and hedgerows are valuable shelter too and you can try to leave an
area behind a shed or under a hedge undisturbed. Add an upturned clay pot with a piece of hose buried and leading to it as an entry tunnel. Add nesting material to form a cosy nest site for bumble bees. Water Another reason for creating a pond in your garden is the fun and satisfaction of watching bees drink from the waters edge. There are so many different types of bee to spot. I’ve sent off
for an identification chart from Friends of the Earth, so I can tick off all the types of bee we have visiting our garden this spring/summer. I’ll cover bee food next month and give you a list of my favourite bee plants. Happy gardening in this time of isolation. We will never take our gardens for granted again - for those of us with
gardens we are so so lucky. Selina Botham is an award winning garden designer based in Claygate. Crime Reduction NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
As I am writing this at the beginning of April for publication next month, you will understand that it difficult to focus on seasonally specific crime prevention at a time when the whole world is facing unprecedented challenges? Like everyone, I am hoping that, by May, the tide will have turned in our favour but that is currently uncertain. The first (and perhaps, the only) positive thing I have noticed is that the level of burglaries taking place has dropped significantly. I can only guess but, it seems to me, one possible reason is that so many people are having to stay at home - including the burglars!! Normally, once Easter has passed, I need to remind people about not leaving valuables on view in their cars when parked up at local beauty spots. Whether that advice will be relevant this year remains to be seen? Currently, on Government advice, we are discouraging visitors from outside the area to drive to beauty spots to take exercise. It is fine for local residents to exercise at local places, following social distancing, unless people are from the same family group. If you are thinking about getting some gardening underway, it might be the time to mark your garden tools and equipment with some gloss paint to make

it easily identifiable and less attractive to thieves? Perhaps you could paint a home post code, house name or some other unique mark on the tools. They are still perfectly usable. Also, if you are working out in the garden, remember to make sure that your windows and doors have not been left open - offering a would-be burglar an easy way into your home. Another very positive situation I have noticed in recent times is that people are making the effort to look out for the older and more vulnerable members of our community. People have been offering to do essential shopping for housebound neighbours and many local stores have been offering free home deliveries. That has been a heart-warming situation to witness and just goes to show that there is a great deal of kindness within our communities. The hand-clapping in support of our NHS staff and carers is another example of how something so simple can make a difference to our morale. As long as we all pull together and follow the current Government guidelines strictly we will come through this incredibly challenging time. I wish you and all you families and friends all the very best and keep safe!!
