Welcome to our jubilee issue!
It’s a big month for the UK, as we celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee over an extended Bank Holiday weekend (2nd - 5th June ’22). What an amazing lady she is, having dedicated her life to crown & country; I doubt we will ever see a monarch quite like her again... Whatever your plans for the Jubilee weekend, I hope you have a great time, and I hope HRH does too! There are plenty of great events planned in our local area; one is Bookham Village Day, always a big family attraction, as well as countless street and garden parties to attend. Our What’s On listings are over-flowing with some really wonderful events, so I’m sure there will be plenty to keep you busy! Let’s hope the weather holds up! June is also the month for World Environment Day on 5th June, Bike Week and Child Safety Week from 6th to 12th June, and World Giraffe Day on 21st June!

THE MEETING PLACE Our 11th Anniversary of the Coffee Shop gave us an opportunity to reflect how the outreach of The Meeting Place to prevent people in our community from isolation and loneliness has expanded. At the present time the Language Hub and its current expansion to help Ukrainian refugees is one classic example. The classes of both the Language Hub and Lipreading will be taking a break in mid summer and returning in September. The Coffee Shop and the Community Fridge will both be continuing throughout the summer to serve the community. Our Anna Chaplain and Anna friends are working building up contacts and being available to support older people, often those who cannot get out from home. August can be a time when so many take holidays. The Anna Chaplaincy will be holding a couple of days called Holiday at Home on Wednesday 10th and Wednesday 17th August. This will be a great opportunity for older people whose families may have gone off on holiday to enjoy a day experiencing with others the experience of a holiday atmosphere with activities, fun and food. Do see our website for more details. Meanwhile their Memory Gathers continues on Friday 10th and 24th June and 1st July at Eastwick Road Church. It is great to see how we have been blessed with opportunities and indeed volunteers. Our teams are all volunteers but of course we are always pleased to meet with new people who would like to join us in supporting the programmes across the board.
For more information on all areas of our outreach in the local community either ring our mobile: 07425 133431, go to our website: www.themeetingplace.org.uk or facebook page: www.facebook.com/The-Meeting-Place-Bookham-373334882842124

‘Chile - an Island Nation?’ With Abbie Bennington DipWSET. Abbie made her first visit to The Old Barn Hall in May when she shared her impressive knowledge of Chile as an exciting and dynamic wine producing nation; at the same time explaining how the country could be viewed as an Island, even though it is far from that physically! Members heard about the history of viticulture in Chile and the fascinating wine making techniques which have developed during the last two
decades. Chile’s unique geographical qualities were explored too, along with six carefully chosen wines for members to enjoy during the evening. Another excellent evening for the Club’s wine lovers. Monthly presentations, tastings and events continue through the year. In June we stay in South America for a visit to Brazil when Nicholas Corfe, owner of ‘Go Brazil Wines’ - UK’s only importer of Brazilian wines - demonstrates the strength and depth of today’s wine making in Brazil …along with six stunning wines from his company’s extensive portfolio. You can read more about BWC on our website www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk, & if you would like to know more email: membership@ bookhamwineclub.org.uk.

BOOKHAM OPEN GARDENS DAY
Sunday 26th June, 10am – 5pm
This year we are featuring around 15 varied and attractive private gardens, including two new ones. In addition, we welcome back Polesden Lacey Infants School, Liberham Lodge (formerly Gracewell), The Grange Centre and Little Bookham Allotments. Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall where delicious home-baked cakes, rolls and drinks will be served throughout the day and there will be plants for sale. In addition you can visit the Country Market stall. Find out more about gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk. It contains useful information on parking, toilets, where else you can buy plants, wheelchair accessibility, and key footpaths to help you move between gardens where there’s no direct road route. Lots of people go round on bicycles but please be mindful of pedestrians on these paths. Sorry there will be no minibus service but do consider car sharing if you can. As you go between gardens, look out for
beautifully decorated Blue Hearts, indicating a verge of lovely flowers to attract pollinators that are so important for biodiversity. Many of our gardens are wildlife-friendly too. Tickets on sale from 23rd May: £7 in advance from • The Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Rd (sponsors) • Wishing Well, 7 High Street • Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade, Leatherhead Rd • Old Barn Hall office, Church Rd, KT23 3PQ. Tel: 01372 456307 (Mon, Wed, Fri 9:30 - noon) • Village Day, Sat 18th June, on the field On the day you can buy tickets (£8) at the Old Barn Hall and from the gardens themselves. Children u16 - free, as are carers of wheelchair users (who pay a reduced rate of £5). Regret no dogs, other than assistance dogs. As well as our sponsor, we would also like to thank our kind local business supporters, our ticket sellers, and the army of willing volunteers who help us on the day.

THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE: 96 YEARS OF LIFE
So, what have those 96 years been like?
THE WAR & THE ARMY Queen Elizabeth II was born and named Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, on April 21st 1926. That means that she was 13 years old when WWII started, 14 when her home in Buckingham Palace was bombed in 1940, and by the time the war ended, she had already become a Junior Commander at the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) and was training to become a mechanic. As a member of the ATS, she was also the first female of the Royal family to be an active-duty member of the British Armed Forces. And on May 8th, 1945, dressed in that ATS uniform, she snuck out of the palace with her sister Margaret to join the people celebrating the end of the war in the streets of London. In 1985, speaking to the BBC about that night, she said, “I think it was one of the most memorable nights of my life.” Today,
Queen Elizabeth is the last surviving head of state to have served during the Second World War.
FAMILY Two years after the end of WWII, and six years before she would become queen, Princess Elizabeth was betrothed and married to her distant cousin – Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten of the Royal Navy. They were married in 1947. He was formerly Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark and, just before they were to be married, was titled Duke of Edinburgh, earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich by Princess Elizabeth’s father. In 1952 she became queen with the passing of her father, then in 1953 was crowned Queen Elizabeth II. At this point, she had already given birth to two of her four children - Prince Charles and Princess Anne. Ten years later in 1960 Prince Andrew would be born, and Prince Edward in 1964. Now, in 2022, those four children have given the Queen eight grandchildren, and twelve greatgrandchildren.
“AtlasbyAtlas Studio/Shutterstock.com”
The 2022 celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70year reign with the Platinum Jubilee is one of the UK’s major historic events. But although 70 years on the throne is certainly an impressive accomplishment, it has to be said that 96 years of life are perhaps even more so. Her Majesty is the world’s oldest monarch, following the death of His Majesty King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia at the age of 90.

Home-made Swiss rolls are so good, and surprisingly easy to make.
Raspberry Swiss RolL INGREDIENTS: • 4 free-range eggs • 115g caster sugar, plus extra to dust (you can also use icing sugar) • 1/2 tsp tsp vanilla
bean paste • 75g self-raising flour • 200ml double cream • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 200g whole raspberries
For The Raspberry Jam • 150g caster sugar • 1/2 tsp lemon, zest, and juice • 350g raspberries
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5 & line a 23x33cm Swiss roll tin with greaseproof paper. 2. Place the eggs, sugar & vanilla paste into a bowl & whisk together until pale, fluffy, & thickened to the consistency of double cream. 3. Sieve the flour into the mixture & carefully fold it in preserving as much air as possible. Pour the mixture into the lined tin & spread it evenly with the spatula. Bake for 10 - 12 mins, or until just firm to the touch. 4. Place a sheet of baking paper, slightly bigger than the tray, onto a work surface & dust with caster sugar. Turn the sponge out onto the paper, peel off the baking paper on the bottom of the sponge & set aside to cool a little. 5. Pour the double cream & vanilla extract into a large bowl and whip to soft peaks. 6. Make the jam - Heat a pan until hot. Add the sugar, lemon zest & juice and cook for 3 - 4 mins until the sugar has dissolved. Throw in the 350g of raspberries and cook for 3 – 5 mins until they break down & thicken. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. 7. Spread the jam over the sponge, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the jam, then sprinkle over the whole raspberries. 8. Starting with the longest edge of the sponge & using the baking paper to help (but take care not to roll the paper inside the sponge!), roll the sponge up tightly, making sure the filling stays inside. Keep rolling until the sponge rolls off the baking paper. Dust with extra caster sugar or the icing sugar & cut into slices to serve.

1. Leatherhead Museum has a new display this summer showing Leatherhead in Old Photos. Located in the upstairs rear room, formerly the office at Hampton Cottage, 64 Church Street, the historical photos have been selected from the Local History Society’s archive collection. The exhibition is a mix of about 50 photos showing local landscapes, businesses and people ranging over the period 1850 to 2000. Comparisons between the world depicted and today’s landscape shows the visual decline over the last century. The Museum, run entirely by volunteers, is open on Thursday and Friday afternoons

Are you ready for ReadyPrint? Almost every day we have someone in the shop talking about how expensive genuine ink cartridges are and especially at the moment with the rising costs of living. They often ask us; is there a way I can save money on ink without having to buy cheaper alternative cartridges that could ruin my printer? We asked the question and Epson answered with their ReadyPrint Flex scheme which according to them could save you up to 70% on the cost of ink. ReadyPrint is a flexible printing plan for the latest Epson Expression Home and Workforce printers, where you pay a fixed amount per month for a set number of pages.

Book Reviews JUNE 2022 ‘A Net for Small Fishes’ by Lucy Jago This book is based on the well known Overbury scandal that rocked the court of James I and culminates in a deeply controversial murder trial in 1615. It centres on the powerful friendship between Anne Turner and Lady Frances Howard who is unhappily married to the abusive Earl of Essex. It vividly portrays how precarious life was for women - how bereavement, bad luck or the caprice of a man could render a woman destitute. These women used their sexuality, cunning and intelligence to try and change their destiny. They were determined and brave and the power and ferocity of their friendship is impressive and moving. A gripping read! ‘This be a net for small fishes that the great ones swim away’. ‘The Island of the Missing Trees’ by Elif Shafak A beautiful, magical novel telling the tale of two star crossed lovers. They are Defne and Kostas, she Turkish Cypriot, he Greek Cypriot, living in war torn Nicosia in the 1970’s. They met in a tavern and fell in love. That love endured through war and separation, eventually culminating decades later in their life together in North London. The narrator of this delightful story is the fig tree which was growing in the inner courtyard of the tavern. It brings compassion, wisdom and understanding of the horrendous outcome brought by war to humanity and the natural world. ‘Young Mungo’ by Douglas Stuart This second novel appears hot on the heels of the fantastic Shugie Bain and is similar in many ways. Mungo Hamilton, like Shugie, is born in the late 1970s and grows up in a poor Glasgow tenement. Apart from an older sister and brother he also has a truly monstrous “alkahawlick” mother, who sends Mungo off on a fishing trip with two complete strangers to straighten him out. Mungo has to try and summon all his inner strength and courage to get back to a place of safety where he finds love. Mungo is a gripping and revealing story about love and the bounds of masculinity, the divisions of sectarianism.

“If you like, I can fix that guttering for you - for cash?” NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION
Hearing that kind of phrase is, for some reason, more common towards the latter part of every year. Perhaps, with winter approaching, opportunist “rogue traders” see a good opportunity to take advantage of people’s vulnerabilities and the desire to have their homes safe, secure and watertight for the coming colder months? Recently, however, we have noticed that this kind of activity is happening during other times of the year, including the summer months. Surrey Police continues to work alongside a number of partner agencies, developing initiatives to help all members of our communities be and feel safe in their own homes. As part of ongoing work we do already, your Neighbourhood Teams are focusing particular attention on providing guidance, support and awareness to members of the community on how to spot and deal with cold callers, rogue traders and distraction burglars. You should know, however, that you have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who comes to your door uninvited. You can always refuse to answer if you have any concerns about the caller. If you have a door chain and do intend to answer the door, then put the chain across before opening the door. Distraction burglaries can be particularly upsetting as they prey on people’s trust in “authority”. For example, a person may call, saying that they are from a utility company, calling to check on reports of “faulty” water pipes, gas leaks or problems with the electricity supply. Once they gain entry, they will distract
46 Looklocal Magazine - June 2022
the resident by asking them to keep an eye on a tap or meter, while others go elsewhere in the house to “carry out checks”. Many people have been distressed to find they have had money, bank cards, jewellery or other items taken in just a few moments. Please insist on seeing appropriate identification for anyone claiming to be from a utility company. You can also telephone the company to find out if they are operating in the area. In fact, even if a uniformed police officer calls at your door they will be perfectly happy for you to ask to see their warrant card to identify themselves, or you can even phone us on 101 to confirm an officer’s details to your satisfaction. Rogue traders tend to be people who offer to carry out work for cash, quite often for sums of money far greater than is actually justified. Examples could be, repairs to “leaking” guttering, replacing ridge tiles, repainting windows and sills, cutting back hedges and other general maintenance work. Many of these people are not even competent to carry out work of this kind and apply pressure to get the customer to go to their bank to draw out the large sum of cash in payment. You can always contact Trading Standards to ask for names of reputable organisations that will carry out work for a fair price. In short, traders who offer to carry out work for cash uninvited should be viewed with some suspicion. You have a right to refuse to deal with anyone who calls at your home uninvited. If you are ever put in this position and feel in any way vulnerable, please call the police on 999.
