Welcome to our jubilee issue!
12
20
IIt’s a big month for the UK, as we celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee over an extended Bank Holiday weekend (2nd - 5th June ’22). What an amazing lady she is, having dedicated her life to crown & country; I doubt we will ever see a monarch quite like her again… Whatever your plans for the Jubilee weekend, I hope you have a great time, and I hope HRH does too! There are plenty of great events planned in our local area this month, as well as countless street and garden parties to attend. Our What’s on listings are over-flowing with some really wonderful events, so I’m sure there will be plenty to keep you busy! Let’s hope the weather holds up! June is also the month for World Environment Day on 5th June, Bike Week and Child Safety Week from 6th to 12th June, and World Giraffe Day on 21st June!

Stinking Dirty Duck (aka Putin) is Helping Ukraine’s Efforts to Oust Russian Invaders Nick Solonair, the British fine artist, is currently in Ukraine helping displaced refugees from the south and east of his country of birth. Solonair’s intriguing illustrations (which he calls Puzzlefaunism - a free placement of animal symbols) feature in the two-volume children’s book Little Tommy and The Kingdom of Clouds, released by Weybridge-based GB Publishing Org. The author is donating all profits from sales of Little Tommy towards the war effort. Solonair graduated from Kingston and Chelsea College of Fine Art, London, and today his work is internationally recognised, having been exhibited in many of the world’s leading galleries as well as the Venice Biennale and also the Victoria and Albert Museum. The tale, told in verse, recounts Tommy’s adventures and highlights Solonair’s acute imagination and creativity as he expresses hope of friendship in a world where everybody lives in peace and harmony. Little Tommy is whisked away to the enchanting kingdom of clouds where he befriends a host of animals with fantastic talents. “When I invented ‘Stinking Dirty Duck’, who everybody wants to get off the cloud,” Solonair explained, “I was thinking metaphorically about
President Putin, and how his actions could one day spoil the Kingdom of Clouds. Now with the War in Ukraine, people live in fear of Putin’s threat to engage atomic warfare which would destroy the world, with radiation contamination spreading throughout Europe, North Africa and neighbouring countries. “We must unite to stop Putin. I never thought this would happen in the 21st Century. I will remain in the Ukraine until there is Victory for our people and our country.” George Boughton at GB Publishing added: “Solonair was much-missed at GB Publishing’s recent ‘Book Covers Exhibition’, staged at Walton’s Riverhouse Barn. Illustrations from his book are very popular. They speak for all of us. Little Tommy and The Kingdom of Clouds is a reminder to both adults and children to follow our dreams in sports, music and the arts. And also, to search for an adventure, in harmony with nature, and look after our beautiful planet – these books deserve to become a treasure within childhood literature.” Given his reputation in the art world, these two full-colour, slim volumes could well become collectors’ items. A limited number of copies of both volumes of Little Tommy and The Kingdom of Clouds are available via https://www.gbpublishing.co.uk/ product-page/little-tommy-and-the-kingdom-ofclouds

Home-made Swiss rolls are so good, and surprisingly easy to make.
Raspberry Swiss RolL INGREDIENTS: • 4 free-range eggs • 115g caster sugar, plus extra to dust (you can also use icing sugar) • 1/2 tsp tsp vanilla
bean paste • 75g self-raising flour • 200ml double cream • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 200g whole raspberries
For The Raspberry Jam • 150g caster sugar • 1/2 tsp lemon, zest, and juice • 350g raspberries
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5 & line a 23x33cm Swiss roll tin with greaseproof paper. 2. Place the eggs, sugar & vanilla paste into a bowl & whisk together until pale, fluffy, & thickened to the consistency of double cream. 3. Sieve the flour into the mixture & carefully fold it in preserving as much air as possible. Pour the mixture into the lined tin & spread it evenly with the spatula. Bake for 10 - 12 mins, or until just firm to the touch. 4. Place a sheet of baking paper, slightly bigger than the tray, onto a work surface & dust with caster sugar. Turn the sponge out onto the paper, peel off the baking paper on the bottom of the sponge & set aside to cool a little. 5. Pour the double cream & vanilla extract into a large bowl and whip to soft peaks. 6. Make the jam - Heat a pan until hot. Add the sugar, lemon zest & juice and cook for 3 - 4 mins until the sugar has dissolved. Throw in the 350g of raspberries and cook for 3 – 5 mins until they break down & thicken. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. 7. Spread the jam over the sponge, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the jam, then sprinkle over the whole raspberries. 8. Starting with the longest edge of the sponge & using the baking paper to help (but take care not to roll the paper inside the sponge!), roll the sponge up tightly, making sure the filling stays inside. Keep rolling until the sponge rolls off the baking paper. Dust with extra caster sugar or the icing sugar & cut into slices to serve.

Are you ready for ReadyPrint? Almost every day we have someone in the shop talking about how expensive genuine ink cartridges are and especially at the moment with the rising costs of living. They often ask us; is there a way I can save money on ink without having to buy cheaper alternative cartridges that could ruin my printer? We asked the question and Epson answered with their ReadyPrint Flex scheme which according to them could save you up to 70% on the cost of ink. ReadyPrint is a flexible printing plan for the latest Epson Expression Home and Workforce printers, where you pay a fixed amount per month for a set number of pages.
30 Pages per month
£1.29 per month
50 Pages per month
£1.99 per month
100 Pages per month
£3.49 per month
300 Pages per month
£9.99 per month
500 Pages per month
£16.49 per month
Need to print less? Roll over unused pages for 2 months Need to print more? Each additional page is just £0.10
So, whether you print a little or a lot there should be a great value option for you. It will also help ensure that you never run out of ink again because as soon as your ink cartridges start running out Epson will ship them straight to your door so you hopefully never run out of ink again! As everyone’s printing needs vary so much and can change so quickly Epson will let you change your plan up or down on a monthly basis, so it stays flexible to what you need and want to do. Give us a call and we can help check your printers compatibility, answer any questions or get you signed up.

THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE: 96 YEARS OF LIFE
So, what have those 96 years been like?
THE WAR & THE ARMY Queen Elizabeth II was born and named Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, on April 21st 1926. That means that she was 13 years old when WWII started, 14 when her home in Buckingham Palace was bombed in 1940, and by the time the war ended, she had already become a Junior Commander at the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) and was training to become a mechanic. As a member of the ATS, she was also the first female of the Royal family to be an active-duty member of the British Armed Forces. And on May 8th, 1945, dressed in that ATS uniform, she snuck out of the palace with her sister Margaret to join the people celebrating the end of the war in the streets of London. In 1985, speaking to the BBC about that night, she said, “I think it was one of the most memorable nights of my life.” Today,

Queen Elizabeth is the last surviving head of state to have served during the Second World War.
FAMILY Two years after the end of WWII, and six years before she would become queen, Princess Elizabeth was betrothed and married to her distant cousin – Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten of the Royal Navy. They were married in 1947. He was formerly Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark and, just before they were to be married, was titled Duke of Edinburgh, earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich by Princess Elizabeth’s father. In 1952 she became queen with the passing of her father, then in 1953 was crowned Queen Elizabeth II. At this point, she had already given birth to two of her four children - Prince Charles and Princess Anne. Ten years later in 1960 Prince Andrew would be born, and Prince Edward in 1964. Now, in 2022, those four children have given the Queen eight grandchildren, and twelve greatgrandchildren.

The 2022 celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70year reign with the Platinum Jubilee is one of the UK’s major historic events. But although 70 years on the throne is certainly an impressive accomplishment, it has to be said that 96 years of life are perhaps even more so. Her Majesty is the world’s oldest monarch, following the death of His Majesty King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia at the age of 90.

Inspiration!
Let’s Celebrate!! While much of the nation is celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee - Congratulations, Your Majesty! - some people struggle with the concept of celebration. “I’m not rich / famous / successful - what have I got to celebrate?” I once coached a retired university professor who had achieved so much in her life, but didn’t know how to celebrate: not her many professional achievements, nor her personal ones. They were never good enough, and she always had her sights on the next accomplishment. She was struggling to write romantic fiction - unsurprisingly, her characters were too focussed on their worthy goals to appreciate each other and enjoy their budding romance. Many people downplay their successes with “It’s nothing to write home about”. We might have such high standards or expectations of ourselves or life that nothing seems worthy of celebration, or such low self-esteem that we don’t feel worthy of it. Maybe we were brought up without anyone celebrating our first steps or our messy paintings. But we don’t have to wait until we have a promotion or graduation to celebrate. We can learn to celebrate right now. Why celebrate? Celebrating is a great way of rewarding ourselves for a job well done. Our brains are wired to respond to rewards, so celebrating small wins can inspire us to overcome the obstacles on the way to big wins. Acknowledging our achievements enables us to identify what worked so we can repeat it in the future. Taking pride in our accomplishments can boost our selfconfidence and motivate us to achieve even more. It can lead to a more positive mindset and rewire our brains to reinforce the successful behaviour. R
Celebrating is good for our mental health
A number of studies have found that celebrating brings significant benefits, including improved physical health and better coping strategies. People who take time to reflect on, and celebrate, their successes are generally more optimistic, take better care of themselves and tend to be less stressed, anxious or depressed. Celebration leads to the release of chemicals in the body that promote happiness. Endorphins can be triggered by laughter, dopamine by reward and serotonin by community. So celebrate with others! It’s contagious and contributes to social bonding, as well as helping people who might otherwise not celebrate. Develop a success and celebration mindset Start small, setting goals and mini-goals, actions and mini-actions. Then, celebrate when you reach each one! We can even celebrate that we’ve got through a major challenge or failure with our sense of humour and self-esteem intact, rather than blowing up at those around us, or crumpling in defeat and going into a tailspin that could lead to depression. That’s a success! Why wait? Celebrate!
